City Winery has announced they will be hosting Covenant Winery’s 20th anniversary Sunday, February 5th at City Winery from 2:30 PM to 5 PM with a jazz concert led by winery founder and proprietor, Jeff Morgan.
The concert will feature a walk around wine tasting of older and current vintages of Covenant, and doors open at 2:30 PM, with the concert kicking off at 3:30 PM.
Musician Jeff Morgan owns the Covenant winery with his wife and CEO Jodie and has a deep history with music as a performer, specifically as a saxophone player. After a formal education at the French National Music Conservatory in Nice, France Jeff became a co-band leader for the house band in Monte Carlo at Prince Rainier’s Grand Casino in Monaco. He took a hiatus from playing music for the last 25 years, but because of the pandemic, he had some time on his hands and returned to his saxophone again. After a full year of practice and hosting a summer concert series in 2022 at the Tasting Patio of their urban winery, Jeff has regained his playing chops.
The wines of Covenant have received wide international acclaim and the Morgans have collaborated on ten cookbooks together, refining the approach to food and wine pairing. Elegant and approachable, books such as the Covenant Kitchen, the Dean & Deluca cookbook and the Domaine Chandon cookbook have delighted foodies with their fresh, ingredient driven recipes. Their informed and no-nonsense food pairings take the guesswork out of entertaining challenges, allowing the chef to relax and enjoy the journey of cooking and wine pairing.

Singer-songwriter Robin Eaton just released his newest single inspired by late 70s New York, “Drugs R 4 Kids.” This song is the first single for Eaton’s upcoming album, Memories of A Misspent Youth, due for release on May 1st.
As he reflects on his past foibles with “Drugs R 4 Kids”, Robin Eaton re-centers himself. The song manages to capture the playful, sardonic humor of darker Americana while retaining the glamour of retro rock.
Back in the 70s, Robin Eaton was performing with local favorites The Leisure Units in New York. The memories of their shared loft and their parties have stuck with him throughout the years. Eaton recalls these volatile drugs fueled these times.
When discussing the inspiration and back story behind “Drugs R 4 Kids”, Eaton writes: “All of the fights and the parties, it was all just regular Leisure Units stuff. Back in 1979, I had recently returned to NYC after making a songwriter album for Warner Brothers in Paris. When I came back to New York and joined the Leisure Units, there was lots of cocaine and heroin floating around the city. It was fun but didn’t bode well for the success of our project. Everybody was on edge all the time. Clive Davis was the first of many to pass on signing our band. Unfortunately, all the members of the Leisure Units have since passed, with me being the sole survivor of the group.”
As a prolific songwriter and producer, Robin Eaton is reintroducing himself as a performing artist. In the past, he was also in the original Broadway production of Hair. Aside from his personal music, Robin Eaton is also a respected composer.

Trivium and Beartooth have announced they are co-headlining a tour stopping at 29 cities, among them Buffalo Riverworks on May 9 and the following day in Huntington at The Paramount on Wednesday, May 10. Malevolence and Archetypes Collide will join the bands on all dates across the upcoming tour.
The Paramount in Huntington
Trivium has expressed excitement for this tour, saying “Trivitooth! We are elated to announce our co-headlining monster of a tour with the incredible Beartooth. We have been fans of what they do, and pals with them for ages — so it’s great we’re finally doing something so massive together. Trivium and Beartooth are both bands supported by each of our wonderful fan-bases — so we know these shows are going to go off.”
On collaboring with Malevolence and Achetypes Collide, Trivium added, “Add in Malevolence, one of our favorite bands on the planet, and Archetypes Collide, one of Beartooth’s favorites, and we have a hell of a bill.” “I’m so excited to go out on this amazing tour with metal legends Trivium,” said Beartooth frontman Caleb Shomo.
Additionally, Pollister named The Paramount in Huntington the #1 worldwide club back in December. First opening in 2014, Buffalo Riverworks has been named the city’s top waterfront entertainment destination.
Declared by Forbes as “inching towards a tipping point of becoming the latest arena headliner,” Beartooth released their latest hit Riptide in 2022. The song sees frontman Caleb Shomo put the pain of the past in the rearview mirror as he takes the steering wheel from fate to command his own destiny, and focuses on the struggles of self-acceptance and mental health, two themes that have defined the band since their inception.
The upcoming tour supports In the Court of the Dragon released in 2021 through Roadrunner Records. Performing for more than two decades, the band has continued to receive International acclaim from The New York Times, NPR, Forbes, Billboard, and more. Through the years, Trivium performed alongside Metallica, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and many others and graced the main stages of Download, Bloodstock, KNOTFEST, and more.
Tickets can be purchased starting Friday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster. Ticketless VIP upgrades are being offered to fans as a joint package, allowing fans to meet both bands.

Canadian musician Bryan Adams is returning to the road for his So Happy It Hurts tour with rock ‘n’ roll band Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, in support of his 15th studio album of the same name. The tour includes stops at Madison Square Garden and Key Bank Center in Buffalo.
Bryan Adams, promoting his upcoming tour on Twitter
Adams and Joan Jett and the Black Hearts will perform at Madison Square Garden on Friday, June 9. The tour will stop at the Key Bank Center on Tuesday, June 13. Tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 3 at 12 p.m. “So Happy It Hurts” is also nominated for Best Rock Performance at the 2023 Grammy awards, this Sunday, February 5.
Bryan Adams is regarded as one the most exciting live musicians in the world for over 40 years. Adams’ songwriting has garnered him a number of awards and accolades, including three Academy Award nominations, five Golden Globe nominations, Grammy Award and 20 Juno Awards.
Rock ‘n’ roll was largely a male dominated genre during Jett’s youth. She formed her band The Blackhearts in 1979, and they released their first album “I Love Rock ‘n Roll,” in 1981. Their debut single of the same name shortly followed, itself a cover of the hit single by Arrows. Jett has since become an inspiration to generations for her work in music, film, television, Broadway, and humanitarianism. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts returned to the road last summer with Def Leppard, Motley Crue and Poison for The Stadium Tour, after two delays due to Covid-19.

Baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan from Bethpage, New York is a gifted multi-instrumentalist whose music career began on the alto saxophone in his teen years on Long Island. Today, Smulyan is critically acclaimed and recognized as the major voice on the baritone saxophone. Smulyan is known for his aggressive rhythmic sense, his intelligent and creative harmonic approach and a strong and incisive wit.
While still in high school, he had the chance to sit in with major jazz artists such as legendary trumpeter Chet Baker, saxophonist Lee Konitz, trombonist Jimmy Knepper and violinist Ray Nance. He studied at Hofstra University before working with Woody Herman and leads a trio with bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Kenny Washington.
Gary Smulyan is a multiple winner of the DownBeat Critic’s and Reader’s Polls and numerous other official polls, including the Jazz Journalists Award for Baritone Saxophonist of the Year. He is a six-time Grammy Award winner for his work with B.B. King, Lovano, Holland, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
Smulyan has recorded and performed worldwide with Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Tom Harrell. Cedar Walton, George Coleman, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Tommy Flanagan, Chick Corea, Diana Ross, Clark Terry, Kenny Wheeler, Charles McPherson, James Moody and Slide Hampton, among others.
Rob Smittix from Xperience Monthly spoke with Smulyan on a range of topics
Rob Smittix: Where are you based out of?
Gary Smulyan: I live in Yonkers, New York. Just north of New York City.
RS: Oh yeah New York City’s hat, I’m familiar, it’s like the extra piece of the Bronx.
GS: Yeah, we’re just north of Riverdale which isn’t very far, just near the Bronx border.
Every time I come up to Troy, the pressure is on because that’s Nick Brignola’s home territory. Bring your best game every time you play in Troy because the spirit of Nick Brignola is hovering all over the place up there.
RS: That’s right!
GS: It’s an inspiring place to play.
RS: And Troy is really up and coming, a lot is starting to happen there.
GS: A lot of it is Joe Barna too. Joe’s the real deal. He creates things and makes music happen. He finds places to play, he finds musicians to play with, he creates venues, he creates opportunities for musicians, both who live there and from out of town. Joe is making it happen. I tip my hat off to him for all of the hard work that he’s doing.
RS: Oh, absolutely. We have an award show called the “Listen Up Awards” and Joe actually won that and he had a fantastic speech. Ever since that I’ve really been in Joe’s corner for sure.
GS: So, what was that award for?
RS: He won the favorite jazz musician award for the region.
GS: Okay, that’s well deserved.
RS: It was favorite too, it wasn’t the best, so it shows that people like him.
GS: Well, you know I think a big part of it is that Joe is providing places for people to hang out and listen to music. Especially now, I think it’s incredibly important. After COVID happened, people are getting more comfortable with going out now and they’re getting excited about hearing live music, supporting live music and being able to get out of the house. To have venues like what Joe is doing, I think is really appreciated by the public. They’re really glad that he’s doing it and they’re very happy to support it and get out for a night and hear some music.
RS: What’s really cool too is that he’s leading the jazz scene, but the goal is to link various genre scenes together here. It’s something that hasn’t been done in a really long time.
GS: So, what do you mean like clubs are supporting each other?
RS: Yeah finally. People are starting to get out of their little groups and are starting to get out and support each other. There’s still a lot of work to do and we’re starting to see a difference.
GS: That’s important, everyone’s successful if you do that.
RS: Yeah, we’re finally scratching the surface.
GS: Wow that’s great news. To be so separated and protective of your little scene, doesn’t really help the scene as a whole.
RS: I’ve been saying it for years.
GS: No. I agree with that. Especially in a place like Troy, you know? Because it’s not New York City, it’s a smaller scene, so you really have to do that to ensure the success of everybody. It’s not just about one place or two places, it’s about everybody being successful and the only way to do that is to support everybody. It’s important, man. So, for me because I haven’t been to this new venue yet. I’ve played in the region quite a few times, so to discover a new place and to see how people come out and react and support; I’m excited about seeing what it is and what the scene is going to turn into. I hope it really is successful.
RS: I don’t know if you actually change this on your ID or your passport but how long has it been since your first name became Grammy-Winner?
GS: I don’t know, I don’t think of myself like that. I’m just trying to play music and get better, I don’t know. I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of a number of projects that have won Grammys. It’s been an honor and a thrill but I don’t focus a lot on that honestly. The bottom line is that it’s the work that’s important right? So, Grammy winner, the thing is other people do that I don’t add that, when I talk about myself. I’m happy other people do it and maybe it helps sell a few tickets or something, but I don’t think of myself in that way.
RS: It’s like when I’d bring somebody to town and you never would’ve known they used to be in such and such a band, so you throw it on the flier and it helps put butts in the seats.
GS: Oh yeah, of course, from an advertising point of view you have to do that.
RS: Right.
GS: I actually don’t talk about myself like that at all. I’m just happy to have been a part of these projects over the years. I’ve been really fortunate and in the right place at the right time and I’ve been really fortunate to have played on these beautiful records.
RS: That’s the thing, it’s really about the music and the end product. I’m just really feeling bad for the kids these days. When I say kids I mean the generation that never knew the world without the internet.
GS: Yeah, I think about that all of the time. With cellphones and computers and not really having the opportunity to go record hunting. There are so many distractions today that take young people away from the essence of trying to learn music. I agree with you. I think it’s very hard and also the opportunity to go play. I was with Woody Herman’s band when I was 22. I left school and went on the road for two years and that’s where I really honed my craft. Those big bands that toured all of time, it’s kind of over. On the flip side though, young musicians are really learning to use social media to further their careers, which is something that I’m not very good at. I’m an old guy, I’m 66 and I find that very challenging. The world is shifting from going on the road to posting a video of you playing something and having people look at it and that’s how you get hired now. That’s the platform where young people are getting gigs now. It’s fascinating to me but it’s a world that I find mystifying, I don’t have my head wrapped around it yet. You know? Putting up a video and seeing how many hits you get and all of that. But some young musicians really have that down, really get it and use it in a positive way to further their careers. Whether they’re teaching, performing or both, that’s where the scene is going now.
Dionne Warwick is taking her show “HITS! The Musical” on tour, with three stops in NY. Warwick and her son, Damon Elliot, have joined the production team as co-producers to bring the show to over 50 cities across North America, starting in February. The show will be stopping at The Egg in Albany, Kodak Theater in Rochester and Town Hall in Manhattan.
As an institution in pop music, Dionne Warwick’s partnership with this musical is a made match. Warwick’s collection of iconic songs — “Walk on By,” “Alfie” — are matched in legend by the hits in “HITS!” which include “Hero,” “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” “I Will Always Love You,” and “Singing in the Rain.”
Warwick is still touring herself; she will perform this February 3 at the MusiCares Dinner to honor Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson. CNN is releasing a documentary feature on Warwick’s life called “Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over” —airing on February 4 on CNN and streaming on HBO thereafter.
Today, Warwick is still going strong. She will be performing at select locations in North America during 2023, including the star-studded MusiCares dinner on February 3 honoring Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson. She will also attend the 65th GRAMMY Awards which will be held February 5. Fans can expect a new recording from Dionne Warwick later in February: “Peace Like A River,” a duet with Dolly Parton.
Warwick said she was drawn to produce “HITS!” because of the exciting cast of young creatives. Her son Damon Elliot agreed, saying that the musical’s well known score will bring together families. Elliot, manager and music producer in his own right, most recently he produced the title track for “80 For Brady,” an upcoming sports comedy film.
The tour will stop in Albany, Rochester and NYC. Tickets can be purchased here. See the full list of tour dates below.

Reggae-rock group Michael Franti and Spearhead have announced their newest tour will be making multiple New York stops this summer.
Michael Franti has spent decades peeling back the layers on what it means to be human, how to be the best version of ourselves and how to follow our hearts. Now, he aims to magnify those concepts enabling us all to apply them to the world around us with the coast-to-coast Big Big Love Tour 2023.
“Big big love represents being able to hold space for the micro and the macro of love,” Franti explains. “Everyone has someone they love, whether it’s their child, spouse, pet or friend. But then there’s holding space to love people of difference – people who are in the midst of war, people where there is pain and suffering. You show up as love, determination and spirit in those places where people really need a caring soul connection to help them heal. That’s what big big love is: holding space for the personal and the worldly.”
Creating A New Live Experience
Known all over the world for their energizing live shows that foster an invigorating sense of community, Michael Franti & Spearhead embody that attitude as they embark on the Big Big Love Tour 2023, featuring over 50 shows from May to August, including stops at California Roots Music & Arts Festival, Reggae Rise Up and Central Park Summer Stage, along with a highly anticipated return to the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
As Franti reconnects with Soulrockers around the country, exclusive VIP opportunities will be available on select dates, including an intimate VIP Meet & Greet at headline shows and special VIP Experiences with Franti ahead of his performance.
Ahead of the U.S. tour, the band will head to Australia for a much anticipated return to Byron Bay Bluesfest as well as additional stops in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Cairns. They have partnered with Wanderlust to host yoga and wellness events in select markets as well as VIP Meet & Greets.

On February 11, Harlem Stage, the performing arts center that bridges Harlem’s cultural legacy to contemporary artists of color, will welcome Nikara Warren for the next installment of its Uptown Nights Concert Series at Gatehouse. Warren will perform music from her acclaimed debut album, Black Wall Street.
A true Brooklynite, Warren was born and bred in the eclectic and electric borough among her family, her friends, her band, and her musical pedigree are a microcosm of the county at large. Granddaughter of world-renowned jazz pianist Kenny Barron, daughter of a half Trinidadian soca/dancehall lover father, and a classic 90s “Brooklyn ’Round the Way” girl mother, Warren is taking vibes to the people with her infectious compositional sense, her post-modern patchwork of influences and cultural signposts, and her fearless musicality. Her bold quest comes from being well-versed in the vibraphone lineage, but seeking to adventure beyond it.
Warren’s debut album, Black Wall Street, represents a convergence of Nikara’s personal, cultural, familial, and musical journeys. Here, she explores abstract sound-collage, hip-hop, jazz, neo-soul, Afro-Latino and Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and more. The through-line here being for Nikara — it’s all dance music. Her vision is cohesive but eclectic — just like how people’s identities are a product of their varied heritage and associations. Music critic Kira Grunenberg stated, “Black Wall Street doesn’t project its versatility and creative range through scholarly jazz arrangements or covers chasing perfectionism. Instead, it offers original music converged around a stylistically fluid foundation.”
