  • In Focus: Rocking Nostalgia, A Celebration of the Long Island Club Scene, at LIMEHOF

On October 8th, music fans gathered at the LIMEHOF to celebrate “A Celebration of the Long Island Club Scene” from the 1980s. The evening’s centerpiece was a book signing by Jay Jay French, the iconic guitarist of Twisted Sister, who had recently authored his memoir, Twisted Business: Lessons from My Life in Rock and Roll. However, this evening was much more than just a book signing.

Jay Jay French initiated the event, greeting fans, signing his book, and sharing captivating rock ‘n’ roll anecdotes. Fans had the opportunity to connect with the legendary musician, acquiring signed memorabilia that would serve as treasured mementos.

After the book signing, Joe Rock from WBAB moderated an enlightening Q&A session for the crowd. The panel consisted of luminaries from the Long Island music scene, including Ken Neil and Mark “The Animal” Mendoza, the original and current bassists of Twisted Sister, Joe Franco, one of the original members of The Good Rats, Randy Jackson and Felix Hanneman of Zebra, and Mark Fowler of the Stanton Anderson Band. These musicians, each with their unique stories and experiences, painted a vivid picture of the vibrant Long Island club scene in the 1980s.

An eye-opening revelation of the evening linked Goodfellas mobsters to Speaks, a popular club in Island Park. Panelists shared stories of the mob’s role in the local music scene, illuminating Long Island’s club circuit history rarely discussed.

Jay Jay French recounted a remarkable tale of Twisted Sister’s last show at Hammer Heads, where fans were given the freedom to destroy the venue. Instead of harming their career, it propelled them to fame, with other Long Island clubs eager to host them for more wild performances. The Long Island club scene had a reputation for wild audiences, and Twisted Sister embraced it.

Following the enlightening Q&A, the audience enjoyed a musical extravaganza with all the panelists taking part. Jay Jay French, the charismatic frontman of Twisted Sister, took the lead in performing several hits. The exception was when Randy Jackson of Zebra stepped up to the microphone to deliver a powerful rendition of Zebra’s classic “Tell Me What You Want,” much to the delight of the crowd. The setlist was a dynamic mix of rock classics, including “All the Young Dudes,” “Crosscut Saw,” and captivating covers of Lou Reed‘s “Vicious” and “Walk on the Wild Side.”

The night ended with an exciting performance of Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane,” making it a fantastic conclusion. The audience at the LIMEHOF marveled at the incredible talent and the captivating history they had just experienced.

Update: Dee Snider, the frontman of Twisted Sister, has just revealed that he will host a book signing for his debut novel, “Frats,” at the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame located at 97 Main Street in Stony Brook. The event is scheduled for October 14th, commencing at 6pm. While the book signing is open to the public without charge, please note that entry to the museum will necessitate the purchase of a general admission ticket

  • Radio Personality Brian Orlando Launches Podcast ‘Rock and Soul Tarot’

Long Island radio personality Brian Orlando launched Rock and Soul Tarot, a podcast combining tarot card reading and rock music. Orlando uses the songs as a way to deliver messages and explain meanings of the tarot cards.

    Credit: Stevie Price

The podcast looks at tarot meanings and lessons through the lens of rock music, which Orlando pulls from over 17 years of rock radio stories, memories, and knowledge.

Music was my first love and I always related everything I learned about to a song. So, I started equating tarot meanings to my favorite songs to help memorize them and as I started doing readings it seemed the best way to explain the messages from the cards was through the one language I knew fluently…. Rock and Roll

    Brian Orlando

The connection between music and tarot cards is already apparent. For example, the Judgement card depicts a trumpet with seven emanations, symbolic of seven musical notes. In addition, the Hierophant card is associated with the physical and interior sense of hearing, depicting two crossed keys on the ground, suggesting tapping into hidden vibrations.

Many famous rock musicians have incorporated symbolism and iconography of tarot cards into their work, including Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Tool, and Rush.

To me it’s an honor if I help guide someone to their highest path. Rock and Soul Tarot is the guide to cards for anyone and everyone, using song lyrics, and stories about musicians and bands, to help channel the energy of each card. We look at tarot “Through the lens of Rock and Roll”

    Brian Orlando

Orlando began the Rock and Soul Tarot podcast by explaining the meaning of each card outright. Next he will begin to incorporate guest readings and discussions with renowned psychics, musicians, and familiar faces from the entertainment industry.

The podcast is available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

  • Pop-Punk Group Gone Stereo Drops New Single “I’m So Sick”

Gone Stereo, the Long Island native pop-punk band has released their brand new single, “I’m So Sick,” promoting their upcoming sophomore album.

    Gone Stereo's I'm So Sick

The new track, “I’m So Sick,” builds on the classic, early-2000s pop punk anthem. The song rides the band’s energy and hook-driven catchiness from previous tracks, and features artwork by punk rock legend Mark DeSalvo.

The group is signed to Negative Progression Records, a punk, emo, and indie label established in 1996. Gone Stereo worked on “I’m So Sick” alongside John Naclerio (Knuckle Puck, Real Friends, Bayside) and Chris Badami (The Starting Line, The Early November).

    Gone Stereo

Videos for both “I’m So Sick” and the group’s new B-Side track “Cool Kids” are set to debut on BlankTV, where the band’s previous videos have garnered over 5,000 plays. Tune into SiriusXM’s Faction Punk to hear “I’m So Sick” and more from the group’s sophomore album debuting this fall.

“Cool Kids” is about coping with cliques, feeling left out, and how unpleasant it feels. You think that you want to be a part of it, but you refuse to be pressured to conform to their standards. In the end, those cliques will all fade away.

  • LIMEHOF to host Discussion of New Book “Act Naturally: The Beatles on Film”

Long Island Author Steve Matteo will take part in a discussion and book signing event at LIMEHOF, spotlighting his new book Act Naturally: The Beatles on Film, on Saturday, September 30th at 2pm.

The event is free with admission to the Hall of Fame, open to the public, and will be moderated by Tony Traguardo of the Fab4Free4All podcast.

I grew up on Long Island and have written for many Long Island music and entertainment publications. I’m thrilled to be interviewed at LIMEHOF about my new book on the Beatles. The hall is all about honoring and celebrating the legacy of great music. When I write my books, chronicling musical history that give music fans a deeper understanding of artists and their times is very important to me. Long Island has a rich history of popular music and music fans on Long Island are some of the most knowledgeable and passionate in the world.

    Author Steve Matteo

Act Naturally: the Beatles on Film examines the five films the Beatles made during their time together: A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine, and Let It Be. Some were successes, some were not, but thanks in part to reissues, bonus material, and Peter Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back, the band’s filmography is a fascinating document of key phases in the group’s short career.

Act Naturally: The Beatles on Film is a comprehensive deep-dive into the band’s movies from longtime music journalist Steve Matteo, and follows the origins, filming, and often frenzied fan reception of projects including the 1964 premiere of A Hard Day’s Night, 1970’s Let It Be and 2022’s Get Back. Matteo explores all aspects of the band’s film history, including production process, original theatrical film releases, VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray releases, and bonus materials, along with the US and UK soundtracks. Full of anecdotes and behind-the-scenes details, Matteo places these films in their larger context as a period of unprecedented artistic and commercial innovation in British and world cinema, offering a definitive account of an underappreciated part of the Beatles’ creative output.

We are excited to have Steve come speak at The Hall of Fame about his book “Act Naturally” and share his insights on The Beatles on Film. Having Tony Traguedo from the Fab4Free4All podcast moderate and speak is also an added bonus to what is sure to be a fun event.  We continue to welcome opportunities to introduce Long Islanders to local authors and podcasters on a regular basis at the museum.

Kelly Leung, LIMEHOF Board Member and Director of Community Outreach, event organizer

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame, located in Stony Brook Village, opened its building location in 2022, and has inducted more than 120 musicians and music industry executives since 2004. The organization also offers education programs and scholarships, and awards to Long Island students and educators.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase to be signed at the event and LIMEHOF has expressed plans to do more author themed events in the future.

  • Alice Cooper & Rob Zombie: The Freaks Marched Into Jones Beach Theater For A Hellraising Parade

Dubbed the Gruesome Twosome when Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie toured together 13 years ago, the pair have reunited for their Freaks on Parade 2023 co-headlining tour that brought them to the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY this past Saturday, September 9, for another haunted hell ride. Joined by industrial pioneers Ministry and the eclectic alternative rockers Filter, these special guests have opened every show on the massive, 38-date trek of North America.

Cooper, the 75-year old “Godfather of Shock Rock,” is promoting his 22nd solo album Road (earMusic), released last month. Bringing a signature style of macabre rock, Cooper’s stage show included a boa constrictor brandished across his shoulders and escaping from a straight jacket only to meet his maker guillotine-style at the hands of his wife Sheryl, in the gowned guise of Marie Antoinette. Cooper and his bandmates – “Hurricane” Nita Strauss (guitar), Tommy Henricksen (guitar), Chuck Garrick (bass) and Glen Sobel (drums) – offered up a set filled with classic tracks, including “I’m Eighteen” (the 1971 single that put him on the map), “Feed My Frankenstein,” “Poison,” and the closing number, “School’s Out.”

An acclaimed cult horror filmmaker, Zombie is said to be turning his attention back to music and is currently working on his first new material since he dropped his seventh studio album, The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy (Nuclear Blast), back in 2021. Backed by Piggy D. (bass), Ginger Fish (drums) and Mike Riggs (who is back with the band after replacing guitarist John 5), Zombie delivered a theatrical, mind-blowing performance to the near 15,000-capacity crowd.

The stagecraft was impeccable, complete with pyrotechnics, a hovering flying saucer, large-scale puppetry and eye-popping, next-level videos displayed across numerous high-def screens. Zombie and company delivered a 14-song set (including an epic drum solo) comprised of notable hits like “House of 1000 Corpses” and “Living Dead Girl,” along with two covers by his former band White Zombie – “More Human Than Human” and “Thunder Kiss ’65.” The night concluded with Zombie’s most notorious anthem, “Dragula.”

  • The Illusion to be Inducted Into Long Island Music Hall of Fame

The Illusion, one of the original bands that helped create the famed “Long Island sound,” has announced it will be inducted into the Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF).

    The Illusion

Set to take place on Oct. 7 starting at 7 p.m., Illusion band members John Vinci, Mike Maniscalco, Rich Cerniglia, Chuck Alder, and Mike Ricciardella will be inducted into the history and family of Long Island’s musicians & entertainers. The group will also perform together publicly for the first time in 51 years! Founded in 2004, the Long Island Music Hall of Fame is dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical and entertainment heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations.

During a time when it was considered inconceivable for record executives (and concert promoters alike) to give a band from Long Island the time of day, The Illusion came onto the scene. They were a force to be reckoned with, wowing crowds with crazy stage shows, custom-made clothes, five-part harmonies, and untouchable musicianship.

In time, The Illusion would get the attention of hit writing producer Jeff Barry, who signed them to his label Steed Records and penned their first hit “Did You See Her Eyes?” which shot up the charts reaching number one in 15 cities. The Illusion would go on to release a total of three albums for Barry’s label, with the first selling over 200,000 copies.

The Illusion would go on to share the stage with such acts as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Allman Brothers Band, Chicago, The Temptations, Richie Havens, Alice Cooper, and countless others. Acts and artists like Kiss, Aerosmith, The New York Dolls, and Billy Joel, not only followed the Illusion but would go on to cite the band as one of their major influences.

The Illusion induction is set to take place Saturday, Oct. 7 starting at 7 p.m. at LIMEHOF’s Stony Brook Museum. This event is open to the public with limited tickets available for purchase.

  • Inside the Music: An interview with Robin Wilson of The Gin Blossoms

Excitement grew as I was able to snag an interview with Robin Wilson, the frontman for both the Gin Blossoms and now the Smithereens, on The Long Island Sound podcast. To be frank, this is my biggest celebrity interview to date and I was a bit nervous.

Robin Wilson is about to be inducted into The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame on August 25th. I began to wonder how this Tempe, Arizona navtive got the call to be in the Hall of Fame, and to my surprise his roots to the Island have a unique connection to Valley Stream, NY through his first marriage.

    Getting Aquainted

Sure, like any seasoned interviewer, I did my homework as the familuar Gin Blossoms’ repertoire came front and center to the cacophoney of songs rambling around this tattered brain of mine. “Allison Road,” “Follow You Down” and “Hey Jealousy” all bounced back into my mind as I researched Robin Wilson.

Still I was a bit concerned about going the interview alone, so I reached out to an old guest of the podcast, Peter Mancini, a fabulous singer/songwriter in his own right. With about thirty years between Peter and myself, I was captivated to see my co-host question one of his musical influences, and provide a true songwritters perspective on the podcast episode. During an earlier interview with Mancini, he mentioned the Gin Blossoms as one of bands he admired. Pete really stepped up with some great insights, and literally saved the session, when a camera glitch could have been an unfortunate hiccup for the flow of the conversation. You can hear the full interview right here on The Long Island Sound Podcast.

    Pete Mancini

    Record Store Rendezvous

Prior to streaming service playlists, the teenage Rock-n-Roll faithful would peruse the local record store to quench their thirst for audio excelence. That’s exactly the nexis where the Gin Blossoms began.

…so pretty much all the musicians either hung out at Tower Records or worked there, and so I knew Bill Leen, the Gin Blossoms’ Bass player.

    Robin Wilson

Robin brought us back to the path of his incorporation into the group and how generous bandmate would share the limelight and have him take the frontman position.

Being in the company of musicians, and surrounding yourself with great music from all genres cultivates a furtile field for aspiring musicians to find their path. The recipe of placing oneself in the company of music lovers seems to have helped Robin Wilson be in the right place at the right time. That’s one of the reasons why I love hosting The Long Island Sound podcast. Connecting with artists of all stripes has given me the opportunity to make connections, and root out inspiration, not only for music, but for my personal well-being.

From MTV to SNL Making Connections

Curious to understand how this Tempe, Arizona navtive came upon the shore of Long Island. Robin recalled meeting his ex-wife, Gena Rositano on Jon Stewart’s show on MTV in 1993.

And so all these all these years, you know, I’ve had an inside track to you know, the world of MTV and of Saturday Night Live. And that’s just through Gena.

    Robin Wilson

The Gin Blossoms appeared on Stewart’s premiere show, along with a guest appearance by Howard Stern. Gena is a native of Valley Stream, and both Robin and Gena settled there. Jon Stewart later officiated Robin and Gena’s wedding and as they say, the rest is history. Gena later moved on to Saturday Night Live, where the Gin Blossoms appeard in March of 1996.

    Chance Meetings

Wilson has built an amazing music career through timely connections, talent and perseverance. Whether it was working with Marshall Crenshaw and the Smithereens or working with fantastic producers like Don Dixon or John Hampton the Gin Blossoms were in the company of the very crew who produced, R.E.M., The Replacements, the White Stripes, and Jimmy Vaughn.

Lamenting the pending induction at The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame, I pointed out the wellspring of talent Robin will join who all made their home on Long Island. From Billy Joel to Joan Jett and the likes of Harry Chapin, Jimmy Webb and Steve Vai. Robin will be playing at his induction on Friday, August 25th along side his son, Aubrey. He plans on playing some Gin Blossom and Smithereen tunes and will be joined by Graham Maby (Bassist for Joe Jackson) who also resides on Long Island. You can find all the details about Robin’s induction ceremony by going to The Long Island Music and Entertainment website.

I’ve been continually amazed at the ability for artists, particularly singer/songwriters and their ability to create the songs that often become the soundtracks for our lives. Talent and hardwork don’t always pay immediate dividends, but for the lucky few who are skilled at making their own breaks, with purposeful networking; sometimes they get to snatch the brass ring for their chance to sing the words, we cannot find, and draw out sweet emotions from time to time.

For the rest of the story and my interview with Robin Wilson, as well as other amazing artists and new music, search for “The Long Island Sound” wherever you listen to podcasts or find it right here on Spotify.
