  • moe. Kicks Off Winter Tour With The Return Of Chuck Garvey

moe. kicked off their Winter 2023 tour on Thursday, January 19th at The Paramount in Huntington. Fresh off guitarist Chuck Garvey’s triumphant, yet limited return to the stage on New Year’s Eve in Philadelphia, the tour marks the first time Chuck will be back in the lineup full-time since suffering a stroke in November 2021.

The band made the announcement at the end of their three night run in Colorado to the amazement of the fans that Chuck would indeed be a “special guest” on New Year’s. Fan’s welcomed Chuck to the stage in Huntington chanting “Chuck! Chuck! Chuck…” as he casually took his place on stage as if it was business as usual.

Ever since Chuck left the band after his stroke, moe. kept the wheels turning with additional personnel Nate Wilson (keyboards) and Michael ‘Suke’ Cerulo (guitar). Nate and Michael filled the void left by Chuck and allowed the band to keep playing shows. On Thursday at the Paramount, Nate Wilson was still playing keys for the entire show and the band sounded as if they never missed a step. moe. cruised through their 10-song opening set in about an hour, with chants and cheers for Chuck between every song break.

Chuck was stoic throughout the show, seemingly trying not to bring the focus on his return, but rather celebrate his virility and founding place in the band without fanfare. Fans were well aware of the gravity of the show they were a part of, squeezing out a few smirks and waves from Chuck between song to audible delight.

Called the “Queen of Long Island Country” by NewsdayMary Lamont was three times voted Band of the Year by the NY Metro CMA, twice voted Singer/Songwriter of the Year by the NJ CMA, and is the first American country act to tour Mainland China.  Raised in rural Ontario, Mary has been featured in ASCAP’s prestigious Playback Magazine, is featured in ASCAP.com’s Audio Portraits, and has opened for Delbert McClinton and Marshall Tucker as well as Charlie Daniels Band at NYCB Theatre at Westbury. Mary also had the honor of singing with Les Paul’s Trio at the famous Iridium Club in New York City.

Mary’s latest CD “Not Far from Here” features original tunes as well as a country song given to Mary to record by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dennis Dunaway, original bassist of the Alice Cooper group and writer of such AC hits as “School’s Out”.

Mary is also a radio DJ at WUSB 90.1 Stony Brook University, where she hosts “Down Home Country” on alternate Sundays, 12:00-1:00pm.

The Spirit Of The Late Legendary Long Island Hall Of Fame inductee Sam “Bluzman” Taylor continues to live on courtesy of his long time backing band A Band Called Sam, featuring Mario Staino (drums), Gary Sellers (guitar), Gary Grob (bass), Danny Kean (keyboards) and carrying the last name tradition is Sam’s oldest daughter top tier vocalist Sandra Taylor and her son L*A*W (Lawrence Taylor Worrell) known for his prolific work with Parliament-Funkadelic & Amy Winehouse.

True to Sam’s blueprint unorothodox vision, A Band Called Sam combines the best of progressive high energy Blues, Funk-Soul & Rock but can easily lead way to elements of Jazz, Country & even Hip-Hop thanks to Sam’s profound guitar work being sampled by rap artists like EPMD, Jay-Z, Public Enemy & many others. You can always expect A Band Called Sam to make the crowd wanna dance, jump, scream and yell through the pulse of their tight knit musicianship and wave which is one of many reasons why their album “Legacy” was #1 on various Blues & Soul charts around the world.

  • De La Soul share “The Magic Number” ahead of Digital Catalog Release on March 3

After years of delay, De La Soul will release their catalog on streaming services on March 3, 2023, the 34th anniversary of the release of 3 Feet High and Rising the Amityville groups’ debut release. The album, which went platinum, reached the top of the R&B chart, and even made it into the Top 40 of the pop music charts, including the single “The Magic Number.”

de la soul the magic number

The influential Long Island group, including members Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove and Pasemaster Mase found new life for “The Magic Number” after an appearance in the credits of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. The song would sample from the 1973 Bob Dorough song “3 is the Magic Number” – Somewhere in this hip-hop soul community / Was born three Mace, Dove, and Me / And that’s the magic number – as well as sampling James Brown, Johnny Cash and Eddie Murphy.

In addition to the digital reissue, “The Magic Number” has also been made available in a handful of physical formats, including a 7″ single and a cassette single.

The group revealed in 2019 that their six albums released while under contract with the Tommy Boy record label would be on streaming services soon. Disagreements with the label, as well as an exploitative contract that cut royalties for the group also made it difficult to clear samples used on the album. After Tommy Boy was acquired by Reservoir Media, a resolution was reached in 2021, leading to the six albums – 3 Feet High And Rising (1989), De La Soul Is Dead (1991), Buhloone Mindstate (1993), Stakes Is High (1996), Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump (2000) and AOI: Bionix (2001) – to appearing on streaming services, effective March 3, 2023.

De La Soul’s last album was 2016’s And The Anonymous Nobody…, featured Talking Heads’ David Byrne, Little Dragon, 2 Chainz, Snoop Dogg, Samon Albarn, Estelle, Usher and more and was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Rap Album category.

de la soul the magic number

The band, in speaking with Apple Music, reflected on their catalog, with Trugory saying “3 Feet High and Rising was inspired, maybe just the state that we were in as kids, just not afraid to say, ‘This is me.’ At the same time, it also gave birth to an era, a sound, a style in Hip Hop.”

Posdnuos added: “Dealing with how the media was labeling us, purposely putting us as the champion of gangsta rap or… None of that really mattered to us. We’re part of something that’s truly bigger than us, so now it’s even another thing of having a responsibility to continue on just for, one, three being three Black men who stuck together; two, being a part of a culture that wasn’t supposed to happen.”

The hip-hop collective will be touring the UK in April, playing shows in London, Glasgow, Nottingham and Manchester.

  • Chuck Garvey to return to the road full-time with moe.

Just two weeks after his very special appearance at moe.’s New Year’s Eve performance in Philadelphia, founding guitarist Chuck Garvey has announced that he will be returning to the road full-time for the band’s 21-date winter 2023 tour.

The tour will kick off on Long Island with the January 19th performance at The Paramount in Huntington, recently named the top club worldwide, by PollStar.

Thank you for your well-wishes and your donations, without which my recovery would not have happened, This year has been a really long, difficult one for me, but a rewarding one, in that I learned what a person needs to do to achieve goals. Some are basic, everyday things like speech, and some are more about universal things that I noticed about family, friends, and community that keep us all afloat.

Garvey in a letter home to fans, in November

The long-awaited announcement comes 13 months after Garvey suffered a stroke, just after the band’s Halloween 2021 performance, which would not have happened without the support of the moe. community, according ot the band.

Bassist Rob Derhak, who himself battled cancer and took time away from moe. in 2017, gave perspective to Chuck’s return to the band:

This past year has been a trying time for moe., as a band. We were faced with an unthinkable decision of replacing our brother Chuck with another guitarist. Suke stepped in and stepped up. He brought his unique style, unparalleled talent, and hyper-focused work ethic into the group. Without his help, we wouldn’t have been able to survive the last year, and I think I speak for all of us when I say that we are eternally grateful. Thank You Suke Cerulo.

    Rob Derhak

  • Elliott Murphy’s Amazing European Journey Enlightens Us with Prose and Song

Elliott Murphy is my latest surprise discovery and I am a wealthier man for meeting him and engaging in conversation. His vast career has taken him from Garden City, Long Island to Paris. A Rock-n-Roll, singer/songwriter, poet, performer, author and journalist for Rolling Stone and Spin Magazine, Elliott Murphy has a career worth investigating. I was most fortunate to have him on The Long Island Sound podcast.

    Elliott Murphy

Looking at the experiences of this past year, I’m amazed at the various brushes with celebrity, while I lurked in the shadow of creative greatness. Unbeknownst to your humble correspondent, I stood briefly in the shadow of Elliott Murphy. Not shy to request interviews for NYS Music, I had yet to appreciate the unbelievable career of the man, who alongside Bruce Springsteen, was once touted as the next Bob Dylan.

After a brief “How do you like the Grand Opening?” back and forth, I propositioned Elliot for a full interview on The Long Island Sound podcast, which you can find right here.

Elliott Murphy was raised in Garden City and after a sojourn through Europe, returned to New York in 1973, and was promptly signed by Polydor Records and produced his acclaimed debut album, Aquashow. Paul Nelson from Rolling Stone acclaimed:

    He’s the Best Dylan since1968

    Paul Nelson (Rolling Stone)

    Discovering Elliott Murphy

The road to discovery is littered with potholes, twists, turns, gumption and glory. Nevertheless the search for the next great artist or song which we long to cling to and make our own, may very well be around the corner. That’s why we search, because it can appear in the most unlikely places.

    LIMEHOF

My recent job was to experience the Grand Opening of the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame, as luck would have it among the many notable celebrities in the music industry, I came across a humble man, open to my small talk to pass the time with me as the circus of celebrity bandied about.

    Paris My New Home

Traveling through Europe on a whim and a prayer seemed to be the right of passage for many twenty something’s over the decades. In 1977, Murphy took his guitar, harmonica and talent on a trip to Italy. Elliott put out a hat for tips and sang his heart out on various street corners throughout Europe, and brought home some new honed songs to New York.

Elliott Murphy performs at the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame Grand Opening

Upon his return to America, he played around Manhattan and scored a record deal with Polydor Records. The birth of his acclaimed album “Aqua Show” took the critics by storm as he was touted as the next Bob Dylan alongside Bruce Springsteen, John Prine, and Louden Wainwright III, but maybe America was just not ready for this soon to be prolific Parisian ex-patriot. You’ll have to tune into The Long Island Sound podcast to get, as I say, “The rest of the story.”

    Prolific Singer/Songwriter & Author

Elliott Murphy’s musical journey seems to have been born out of a dream. He must be a dreamer having authored several books, and produced over thirty-five albums. In fact if you follow Elliott Murphy on Facebook, you’ll experience his awesome ability to detail dreams from the evenings slumber with the Rock Dream posts.

My latest project is called Elliot Murphy’s rock dreams. And this is a very bizarre one. I have dreamt about rock stars ever since I can remember. But I never wrote it down. Okay.about a year or so I decided I would start writing down these dreams and putting them up on my Facebook page. And I’m up to number 86 shit.

    Elliott Murphy

In October 2012, he was the recipient of the Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville De Paris.  On November 4, 2015 he was decorated with the Chevalier Ordre des Ares et des Lettres (Order of Arts & Letters), and in 2018 he was inducted to the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame by Billy Joel. He keeps going strong, touring throughout Europe, appearing at over one hundred events per year.

During our interview, I found Elliott to be open, honest and transparent about his career and journey.

It was my privilege to spend over an hour with him as we conducted a virtual interview between New York and Paris. There is much more to unpack about Murphy’s career, and  I’m hopeful he will grant me additional interviews in the near future. (No pressure, Elliott, just say’n)

Sometimes we have to appreciate the past, and look at the historical journeys great artists have taken to appreciate their art and their careers.

    The Joel/Springsteen Connection

Elliot Murphy counts Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen not only as friends and peers, but as collaborators. Here’s an interesting trailer from the documentary “The Second Act of Elliott Murphy” featuring Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen.

    Billy Joel MSG
    Billy Joel at MSG

In fact the list of collaborations is quite long, as he has worked with  Mick Taylor,  Phil Collins, Sonny Landreth, David Johansen, The Violent Femmes, Cindy Bullens and Shawn Colvin.* (Wikipedia reference) In 1995  his “Selling the Gold” a duet on the song “Everything I do- Leads Me Back to You” features Bruce Springsteen.

    Bruce Springsteen

When talking about “The Boss” Elliott said this:

I’ve had so many marvelous moments with him (Bruce Springsteen) he invited my son and myself to sing Born to Run with him in a venue called the Stade de Frances. The French stadium, minutes. 80,000 people Oh my god. Wow. Imagine what a thrill that was.

    Elliott Murphy

The Last of the Rock Stars

The connections, the collaborations and the journey of Elliott Murphy is quite fantastic. There’s a documentary from 2015 called “The Second Act of Elliott Murphy” which explores his storied career. When Elliott Murphy first went to Europe, so many Rock Stars were passing away, Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Brian Jones. This is what he had to say about his most requested song:

The last of the rock stars was written on my first trip to Europe. And it is probably the song that I played at literally every concert. I think I’ve done about 2600 concerts in my life and I think I’ve played it literally at every show

Sometimes one has to explore the road less traveled to discover new music as well as time-tested classics. I believe this new year, will be a year of hope which enriches us with great new music, as the discovery of the wellspring of talent continues. A chance brief encounter, led me to Elliott Murphy, and I am richer for it. I look forward to hearing and reading more from him, as his creative desire remains strong along with his connection to Long Island, NY. I leave you with his beautiful song, “Touch of Kindness“.

May this New Year help us build the necessary bridges through kindness and cooperation with the gift of music. Peace!
