  • Charles Dennis Teams Up with Spaghetti Eastern Music for Performance at Glasshouse Project

Choreographer/performance artist Charles Dennis announced he is once again teaming with guitarist/composer Sal Cataldi (aka Spaghetti Eastern Music) for a three-hour performance of “Recycle Me” at Glasshouse Project in New Paltz on July 23 from 5:30-8:30 pm.

    “Recycle Me”

“Recycle Me” imagines physical responses to the volume of plastic waste that is accumulating in our environment. Charles Dennis has collected plastic waste that has been consumed in his household and stored it for use in this performance. He physically interacts with the plastic and has choreographed a duet with it, building a sculpture of plastic garbage, creating a visual landscape that Dennis dances through. Accompanying the performance is a live musical score for solo electric guitar composed and performed by the acclaimed Spaghetti Eastern Music, the solo project of guitarist Sal Cataldi.

Born and raised in NYC, Charles Dennis is an award-winning choreographer/performance and video artist. He co-founded the legendary New York City performance venue P.S. 122 in 1980. His work is interdisciplinary, including elements of dance, theater, visual art, and media, described by Dancemagazine as “physical theater.” His work has been presented in art centers, colleges, community centers, and theaters worldwide.

Guitarist/composer Sal Cataldi (a.k.a. Spaghetti Eastern Music) has created an original score for solo electric guitar that will be played live to accompany the performance. The duo first collaborated on a reprise of Dennis’ well-known piece, “2x2x4” at the Avant-Garde-Arama Lands in Woodstock Festival of July 2021. Spaghetti Eastern Music’s recording of the three-movement scores of “2x2x4” was released in November 2021 on Bandcamp and other streaming services.

“Recycle Me” is included in the “Present Continuous,” a unique summer festival of durational performance art works held over three, 24-hour sessions, a highlight of Upstate Art Weekend 2024 at Glasshouse Project in New Paltz. This program is free and open to the public with a suggested donation to support the artists. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP.

  • Das Damen Return with Remastered Debut EP and Catskill Showing

The alternative rock quartet Das Damen has returned with a remaster of their debut EP, 1986: Keeps Me Wild, as well as with their first live date in over 30 years at the Drom30 Festival in Catskill, NY. The first song from the remaster, “Trick Question,” is now available.

    Credit: Naomi Petersen

The band was originally founded in 1984 by vocalist and guitarist Jim Walters, guitarist Alex Totino, eight-string bassist Phil Leopold Von Trapp, and drummer Lyle Hysen. 1986: Keeps Me Wild was produced by producer Wharton Tiers, known for his work with Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca, and Pussy Galore, at Fun City Studios in NYC. It was released on Sonic Youth co-founder Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! imprint in 1986, later to be reissued by SST Records.

Das Damen would gain a reputation as an epic live band, playing alongside Nirvana, Soundgarden, Black Flag, Green River, Screaming Trees, and DC3 on various tours. 1986: Keeps Me Wild is regarded as a touchstone in the downtown NYC underground movement, and captured the live energy of Das Damen.

When we got the tapes baked several years ago, upon listening to them we discovered we had a few unfinished alternative takes from the original EP sessions. We didn’t feel we could bring the same “1986 enthusiasm” to finishing the tapes but by bringing in a few people who we respect or are pals from back then, the re-imaginings would have a new energy of their own.

    Drummer Lyle Hysen

The remastered album features cuts based on the original Ecstatic Peace! recordings as well as never-before-heard demos. Additional contributors include Dez Cadena (Black Flag), Thalia Zedek (Come), Gary Lee Conner (Screaming Trees), John Robinson (The Fluid), and A Girl Called Eddy. Sean Glonek at SRG Studios was behind the remaster, with oversight by Walters, Hysen, and best-selling author and producer Tom Beaujour.

The full remastered album will release digitally on Sept. 8 and on vinyl in October. Pre-orders are now available.

The band’s showing at the Drom30 Festival will be under the name Sad Nemad on Sept. 16, with additional shows under consideration. For more on Das Damen and to listen to “Trick Question,” check out the band’s Linktree.

  • Big Time Rush Takes the Stage at Bethel Woods 11 Years Later

This past Friday, July 7, the iconic Big Time Rush band from the early 2010s played an incredible show at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Playing almost eleven years earlier at the same venue, many superfans flocked back to see them—this time all grown up. Concertgoers sported sparkly attire, OG Big Time Rush t-shirts, and posters stating their love for their favorite band member as they waited eagerly in anticipation for their Can’t Get Enough tour.

Big Time Rush, consisting of members Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Logan Henderson, and Carlos PenaVega, originally began as a TV show for the Nickelodeon channel. They formed in 2009 and garnered a cult audience of superfans, continuing their show with four seasons until their final episode in 2013. The band took a break afterward to allow each member to work on his solo career but recently regrouped in 2021. Big Time Rush has been touring since, and is now at the beginning of their Can’t Get Enough tour, with twenty-five shows left. They previously played at Saratoga Performing Arts Center and are scheduled to play at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater.

With the concert being delayed for almost two hours due to thunder, there was an almost-certain chance that the show was going to be canceled. Although openers MAX and JAX could not take the stage, the boy band made sure that the show went on. Fans were ecstatic. The boys came out on a large platform with bright lights shining behind them to create a silhouette of their bodies. The screams that followed were absolutely deafening and continued that way for the rest of their set. During their song “All Over Again,” the members pointed to different parts of the crowd whilst singing the lyrics “To the left, left, left/On the right, right, right/To the back, back, back/On the side, side, side.” Confetti shot out of cannons during the performance of “Confetti Falling,” and a video montage of the boy band played on the large screen during their intermission song, “I Just Want To (Party All the Time).” At one point in the show, each member chose a female fan from the audience to personally serenade on stage.

During the encore, the band left for a good two to three minutes before re-entering to perform “Windows Down,” their most popular song “Boyfriend,” and “Til I Forget About You.” At the beginning of the encore, the members ran off the stage and into the seated sections to greet some of the fans that were farther away from the stage. Big Time Rush promised that they would definitely be back at Bethel Woods to play more shows in the future.

Setlist: Can’t Get Enough, Elevate, Song for You, Waves, Weekends, All Over Again, Any Kind of Guy, Ask You Tonight, Forget You Now, Love Me Love Me, Paralyzed, Nothing Even Matters, Worldwide, Invisible, I Just Want To (Party All the Time), Famous, City is Ours, 24/Seven, Shot in the Dark, Big Night, Confetti Falling, Big Time Rush

Encore: Windows Down, Boyfriend, Til I Forget About You

  • In Focus: Tears for Fears Rock Out at Bethel Woods

This past Wednesday, July 5, the iconic 80s band Tears for Fears took the stage at Bethel Woods for a night of new-wave nostalgia. The English band, consisting of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, with Lauren Evans supporting the two on vocals, put on a fantastic show for their The Tipping Point Part II tour.

Tears for Fears, photographed by Sarah Hyun

Tears for Fears originated in Bath, UK in 1981 and disbanded for a nine-year-long period in 1991. After reuniting in 2000, the two released albums Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, The Hurting, and their most recent release, The Tipping Point. Tears for Fears recently played a show at Madison Square Garden and Saratoga Performing Arts Center. With nineteen dates left in the North American / European leg of their tour, the duo will be busy playing shows until late November.

Tears for Fears, photographed by Sarah Hyun

Orzabel and Smith have been playing shows virtually their whole lives. The two know exactly how to work for a crowd, as thousands of fans in middle age and older stood up in their seats to get a good view of the stage. Concertgoers danced, jumped, swayed, and clapped along to iconic songs like “Shout,” “Head Over Heels,” and their most popular track, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” After playing “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” Orzabel paused for a moment and said, “This song gets a million streams every day, which would be remarkable if they weren’t all from us.” A sustained laugh from the crowd. During their performance of “Mad World,” fans screamed in excitement as the two scaled the stage, singing and dancing as colorful lights flashed about.

The end of the show was exciting yet bittersweet, as the two closed the night with a powerful performance of “Change” and “Shout.” Although they do not have any more scheduled tour dates in New York State, the two are sure to come back again as they have in the past.

Setlist: No Small Thing, The Tipping Point, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Secret World, Sowing the Seeds of Love; Long, Long, Long Time; Break the Man, My Demons, Rivers of Mercy, Mad World, Suffer the Children (sung by Lauren Evans), Woman in Chains, Badman’s Song, Pale Shelter, Break It Down Again, Head Over Heels / Broken

    Encore: Change, Shout

  • Recording Studios in the Hudson Valley

In the Hudson Valley, you will find no shortage of recording studios spread throughout the region, including a number in New Paltz, Woodstock and around Ulster County.

Welterweight Sound Studio in New Paltz, owned by producer/engineer Ryan Dieringer, is an ideal spot for recording, mixing, and mastering music with a 32’x17’ live room and “in the round” control room with 16’ wood-slat, gabled ceilings as well as two isolation booths. Welterweight is also an ideal place for audiobook/podcast/ADR recording or mixing, with a strong Wi-Fi connection.

The independent JT Beats LLC Studios in New Paltz is owned by Jake Totilo and offers several recording, mixing, and mastering services. Totilo grew up in Brooklyn and learned how to play piano from his Grandpa at the age of 7 and uses music as an outlet for self-expression, whether it be the piano, singing, production, or DJing. He is now 20 and studied music at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz and even released his album.

Dreamland Recording Studios in Hurley, a town in Ulster County and west of Kingston, was opened in the ’80s by Joel Bluestein, due to the recording studio climate at the time, which he found to be a mostly hostile working environment. His goal was to create a socially-responsible business that treated its employees like family and was an overall better place to work and record, as well as close the gender gap in the male-dominated recording business, hiring women and bringing in new ideas and ways of working. In 2005, Dreamland closed down due to the economic climate at the time, as many studios were forced to do. In 2008, however, Jerry Marotta came on board and re-opened the studio with Joel. They continued their mission of maintaining the family-oriented, comfortable, creative vibe of Dreamland.

The best thing about Dreamland is that it offers remote recording services, so artists can achieve their recording needs from the comfort of their own homes. Artists can record tracks at home and send them to Dreamland for re-amping, analog processing, remote mixing, and more. Inside the studio, Dreamland is a residential recording space for artists to nurture their craft, with a fire pit inside surrounded by the upstate mountain breeze.

Gimme That Sound is a recording studio, occupying a refurbished Hudson Valley barn In Upstate New York’s historical hamlet of Stone Ridge in Ulster County. The studio is just a half hour south of Woodstock, and a little less than two hours from Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Owned and operated by Grammy-winning mixer/producer Stephen George, Gimme That Sound offers online Mixing, music production, in-house mixing, mastering, and recording services. The studio has produced music of all genres, from indie, hard-core, pop, rock, r&b, hip-hop, and gospel.

Before opening Gimme That Sound, George was a local Chicago musician, playing the drums for the band Ministry, and worked as Chief Engineer at Zomba / Jive Record’s “Battery Studios Chicago.” In 1998, George moved to New York City to expand his career. Recently, George relocated from Manhattan to the Hudson Valley, between the Catskill Mountains to the north and Shawangunk Mountains to the east.

Woodstock’s Levon Helm Studios has been producing music since 1975, and is named after the late Levon Helm, who gained fame as one of the three vocalists of The Band and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Home of Levon’s legendary Midnight Rambles, and situated on 18 acres in historic Woodstock, the barn-style Levon Helm Studios welcomes artists for intimate concerts, recording sessions, rehearsals, writing retreats, and private events. Other artists and bands who have recorded there include Elvis Costello, My Morning Jacket, and many more.

New York’s Hudson Valley is home to Long Pond Recording Studios, where Taylor Swift has worked several times. The singer-songwriter has recorded her eighth studio album, Folklore, as well as her re-recorded version of her second studio album Fearless and fourth studio album Red. Long Pond’s incarnation began with musician Aaron Dessner having hope in his heart to move out of New York City with his family and find an oasis for the band The National. The main goal was to create a space that would encourage and inspire creativity for the creation of music. This process culminated with the band creating and recording their Grammy award-winning album Sleep Well Beast, using the Studio as the album cover and becoming the theme focal point of the marketing campaign created by Pentagram.

Platinum Productions in the Orange County Town of Monroe is a full-service recording studio and video production company serving clients throughout the Greater New York Metropolitan area and nationwide. The studio is located just one hour from New York City and has many musicians from all genres of music, including 2012 The Voice winner Jermaine Paul. Phil Bula, President of Platinum Productions, began as a young boy playing in brass bands with the Salvation Army and was featured on the game show I’ve Got a Secret a the age of nine. Bula grew and progressed into a professional musician before moving from the stage to the studio in 1978 and began working for popular artists including Billy Joel, Michael Bolton, and Whitney Houston. His work may be seen and heard on television shows produced by HBO, ABC, ESPN, USA Network, and Disney.

These are among the several recording studios throughout the Hudson Valley of New York where aspiring musicians can produce music to make their musical dreams come true. If you know of another we missed, reach out to editors@nysmusic.com!

  • Grey Fox Bluegrass, a Truly Family Friendly Festival

Looking for a family-friendly music festival this summer with a focus on the family aspect? The Catskills has your answer with Grey Fox Bluegrass Music Festival.

    grey fox bluegrass
Photo courtesy of the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival press release.

First being held in 1984 (and with roots going back to the 1976 Berkshire Mountain Bluegrass Festival) Grey Fox Bluegrass has been held on the Walsh Farm in Oak Hill, NY, on the banks of the Catskill Creek, since 2008. The festival has enjoyed great longevity with host band Dry Branch Fire Squad welcoming major bluegrass names including Del McCoury, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Tony Rice, Peter Rowan, Abigail Washburn, the Gibson Brothers and hundreds more.

Grey Fox has a bright future especially thanks to the welcoming nature of families and children to the festival, as well as with the Grey Fox Bluegrass Academy for Kids introducing children to bluegrass music and bringing everyone together for a final performance on the last day of the festival.

North Carolinian Lynda Dawson shares with NYS Music her experience at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival 2022, with a first-hand account of how her family spent the weekend, Bluegrass Academy for Kids and an attestation at the family-friendlyness of this long running festival in the Catskills.

It’s a 700-mile drive from our home in Raleigh, NC to the Walsh Family Farm in Upstate NY, where the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival takes place every July, yet my husband and I knew it would be worth the trek. We had made this pilgrimage pre-children, and Grey Fox instantly became one of our top favorite music events, so as soon as the youngest of our two daughters turned eight, we booked our Festival + Camping tickets and their spots in the 2022 Grey Fox Bluegrass Academy for Kids (BGA for short).

BGA at Grey Fox is a four-day group lesson environment where children ages 8–17 gather for instruction from top notch musicians each day, spending a couple hours before lunch, a couple hours after lunch, and culminating in a Sunday afternoon performance on the main stage. My 11-year-old daughter was psyched to know she’d get to be part of the final act of the festival. My 8-year-old, prone to hiding rather than play in front of others, wasn’t so sure.

The first evening we walked from our campsite up to the big tent where the Academy would be taking place. We were welcomed by other kids, the instructors and Academy Director, Mark Panfil, who enthusiastically kicked things off by sharing his passion for bluegrass and teaching young musicians, “I especially love working with young people who are willing to work and try new things. These are exceptional kids. Any teacher with experience knows these kids are special!”

    grey fox bluegrass

The next morning, feeling proud and encouraged, our girls rode their bicycles up Smiley Street towards the Academy tent with fiddles on their backs. The Grey Fox site team builds a pop-up “city” on a farmer’s field every summer, complete with bluegrass-themed street names, and neighborhood camping sections like Picker’s Paradise and Generatorville. Our children quickly figured out the lay of the land and were independently navigating their way between our campsite and the BGA tent. My husband and I smiled, then we opened our own guitar and mandolin cases, relaxed in our camping chairs, and relished in the joy of playing songs together outside on a beautiful summer morning. We hoped our kids were having as much fun as we were.

“Yes!” says our oldest when we picked them up for the lunch break, “The people are awesome, and it is super fun!” Mark Panfil agrees, “The BGA is special to me because of the people involved. From the teachers to the parents to the students. People who believe in the future of Bluegrass music are all around this festival. This experience stands out because this festival stands out, open to innovative programs and maintaining a family friendly space.”

And so the festival fun continued. In the evenings we enjoyed sitting together as a family on the hillside listening to music from the High Meadow main stage, then dancing until the kids were practically falling asleep in the Catskill Stage dance tent. During the day while our girls were playing and learning bluegrass songs with new friends, my husband and I would play music with our neighbors, or shop along vendor row, or discover new bands at the Creekside Stage.

    grey fox bluegrass

Our youngest was even overcoming her fear of playing in public. When she got back to the campsite late Saturday afternoon she asked if she could join in the jam happening across the street from us. “Sure!” we said, trying not to sound too excited, and watched her walk over, unpack her fiddle, and start playing along with a dozen welcoming musicians.

On Sunday morning the kids met at the BGA tent to run through their songs for the big performance, then they headed backstage as the parents joined the audience. To our delight, Jerry Douglas took the stage with them and kicked off, “Long Journey Home” on his Dobro, grinning ear to ear as he sang along on the chorus, “Lost all my money but a two-dollar bill…” During the set he addressed the audience and said, “Man, I wish I had something like this when I was a kid!” It was joyous.

When the show and festival were over, we met up with the girls amidst families giving hugs and high-fives. As soon as they saw us they both rushed over and asked with excitement, “We’re coming back again next year, right?!?” “Absolutely,” we said. Absolutely.

As Lynda Dawson detailed above, Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival is an ideal destination for families looking to get their children a healthy dose of music and the outdoors this summer, with opportunities for fun abounding and a lifetime of memories to be gained.

    Woodsist Festival

Woodsist is an independent record label founded in 2006 by Jeremy Earl of the band Woods. Originally born in Brooklyn, the label is now based in Stone Ridge, New York. The inaugural Woodsist Festival took place in Brooklyn in 2009 with Thee Oh Sees headlining alongside a number of acts including Beach Fossils, Real Estate, and Kurt Vile. • Hudson Valley Jazz Festival Continues To Showcase Local Acts

The Hudson Valley Jazz Festival will once again bring the sounds and soul of jazz music to Upstate New York. The celebration is now in its 14th season and has long acted as one of the premier showcases for local musicians. This year’s festival runs from August 9-13.

While there have been plenty of big names that have performed at the festival, the Hudson Valley Jazz Festival is truly dedicated to fostering and exhibiting musical talent around the region. Going along with the theme of community, the event will not take place at just one location like a traditional festival. Instead, the festival will unfold across various restaurants, clubs, galleries, community centers, and stages.

Among the towns where the festival will be held include Kingston, Warwick, Tarrytown, Montgomery, Stone Ridge, Greenwood Lake, and Woodstock. Another unique aspect of the Hudson Valley Jazz Festival is that each specific venue chooses the performers. Every participating town, business, and/or organization will have the ability to highlight the artist(s) of their preference. The result is a hyper-local experience that looks to demonstrate the diverse sounds and styles of jazz in Hudson Valley.

    Drummer Taru Alexander via hudsonvalleyjazzfest

There will be over 20 performances as part of the festival, with many of them being free. It all gets started on Wednesday, August 9 at The Cove in Greenwood Lake. The performance features a local all-star lineup including well-known vibraphonist Bill Ware.
