  • Celebrating 50 Years of Hip Hop Event To Feature at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall

    The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall announced an addition to their fall schedule: Celebrating 50 Years of Hip Hop. The night on Friday, October 27 at 7:30 PM will feature performances to highlight the history of hip hop with classic tracks and the genre’s favorite artists.

    Live shows feature JB!! aka Dirty Moses, Ohzhe, KATANI, DJ Nate da Great, Shiloh the Messenger and Mundy.

    The performers will be joined by Albany’s Victory Soul Orchestra. The horn funk favorite cites influence from classic New Orleans brass bands, as well as artists including Galatic and the Dap Kings.

    Shiloh the Messenger 

    Located in Upstate New York, Shiloh The Messenger is a rapper, producer, and writer who pours his soul into his musical passion. Originating with a background of reggae and calypso, he’s found solace in hip hop, and over the years has continued to hone his skills and elevate his mastery of the craft.

    Victory Soul Orchestra

    Victory Soul Orchestra is a hometown horn funk favorite. The dirty sounds of New Orleans brass drive their sound with some influences including Galactic as well as the Dap Kings. You can also find them fronted by Albany’s own JB aka Dirty Moses and singer Dali Soto.

  • Brooklyn Group Strange Weather’s New Concept Album “The Last Man Alive” Slowly Awakens

    Strange Weather, the Brooklyn-based genre-bending group, has been slowly rolling out their newest record, The Fool’s Journey. The record is a concept piece, with one track released each month as the full story of the album unfolds. The most recent track to debut is “The Last Man Alive,” inspired by the classic Rip Van Winkle folk tale. 

    The Last Man Alive

    “The Last Man Alive” follows a story format about a man who wakes up to find himself, as one could guess, the last man alive. With lively vocals and whimsical tones, the track is truly an entertaining story in itself. The song breaks into guitar solos and maintains a bouncing musical undertone as the protagonist’s story unfolds.

    The Fool’s Journey follows a protagonist as he falls down the rabbit hole of love, leaving his private sunny abode. Throughout the album, he faces challenges, riddles, romance, and hardship. Through it all, however, The Fool learns to face those hardships and comes to represent many facets of the human condition.

    Strange Weather

    Strange Weather cites bombastic 90s rock, 70s Afrobeat, and spaghetti western, among others, as inspiration for their indie rock project. Strange Weather is led by songwriter and producer Sean Brennan, and includes Callie Brennan (vocals), Paul Peglar (keys and vocals), Philip Ambuel (bass), Alex Beckmann (drums and percussion), Isaac Gardner (drums and percussion), Evan Hamaguchi (saxophone), and Ethan Fox (tablas).

  • Billy and the Kids Announce Two-Night Run at Capitol Theatre

    On the heels of a performance on the Rooftop at Pier 17, Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann will bring a mob of musicians, Billy and the Kids to the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester this October.

    The pair of shows will take place on October 20 and 21, the only dates on the calendar for this talented group of musicians.

    The announcement arrived in a late-Thursday tweet from Billy and the Kids’ official account:

    Then on Friday, the announcement was official as Bill Kreutzmann said “I had so much fun going ‘Pier to Pier’ with the Kids last month, but now it’s time to pull into port – Port Chester, NY, that is – and drop anchor for two nights at Peter Shapiro’s Deadhead Palace.”

    Kreutzmann added “So I’m inviting all of you to my East Coast ‘Daze of the Dead’ parties. Please dress in costume (if the spirit moves). Billy and The Kids will be joined for both of these shows by some very special guests – I’ll keep you guessing for now, but I’m just over the moon about them.”

    Later that afternoon, it was revealed that the Capitol Theatre run will include frequent lineup contributors Tom Hamilton, Aron Magner, Reed Mathis, and unnamed guests, although as Jambands.com points out, most recently on the road, Kreutzmann invited Kanika Moore and Daniel Donato to join as special guests.

    Kreutzmann ended his message with a hint at future shows out west, saying “When we dance, we are all together, we are all one, and we are all very much alive. This ‘Daze of the Dead’ trick is for New York but don’t you worry California – stay tuned for a special treat.”

  • Al Hirschfeld Foundation Unveils City Winery Partnership, Event, and Collectables

    The Al Hirschfeld Foundation has announced a new partnership with NYC’s City Winery, with a special live event and exhibition on September 18 titled “Hirschfeld’s Music.”

    David Leopold, Creative Director of The Al Hirschfeld Foundation, will launch the celebratory event with a live multimedia presentation. Leopold will take attendees on a virtual tour through decades of musical history as seen by Hirschfeld. The presentation will touch on Hirschfeld’s friendships with Duke Ellington, Aerosmith, and Benny Goodman. 

    For the first time, nine decades of Hirschfeld’s work will be on display at the event featuring rarely-seen images, as well as old favorites. Artwork on display in the exhibition will be available for purchase here. Proceeds supports the Hirschfeld Arts Curriculum program.

    We are delighted to be working with City Winery to share Al Hirschfeld’s love of music. Hirschfeld was a serious hot jazz fan in his youth, and he never lost his passion for music throughout his whole life. One of his first jobs was as a song plugger on the night boat to Albany. He drew so many album covers over the years that some used record shops simply have Hirschfeld cover sections. You don’t get many people who can say that they help Django Reinhardt get his first recording date and also find themselves in the studio with Aerosmith. Hirschfeld’s strong connection to music has never been explored…until now.

    Following the live event, City Winery Gallery will open a new, free exhibit of Hirschfeld’s vast collection of music art. The pieces depict some of the most iconic musicians of the 20th century, including Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, The Beatles, and more.

    In addition, “Hirschfeld’s Music” will extend the celebration will the debut of 12 collectable wine bottles, labeled with Hirschfeld portraits of legendary musicians. Featured artists include Mick Jagger, The Grateful Dead, Aerosmith, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and more.

  • Five Can’t Miss Shows in Rochester This September

    School is back in session, the end of summer is counting down in days, and live music in Rochester is retreating into indoor spaces as September begins. But darker, cooler nights can lead to later, hotter shows. If you want to find yourself where the music is hottest find yourself at these ones.

    September 14 Clem Snide at Abilene

    Clem Snide once was a band, but now it is just a man, Eef Barzelay. His unique and gorgeous voice and unique and gorgeous songwriting remain however and this will be a unique and gorgeous, and intimate, evening at the old saloon on Liberty Poll Way.

    Tickets are $15/$20dos and the show gets going at 7:30pm.

    September 15 Hot Tuna at Kodak Center

    Hot Tuna is no stranger to rock and folk fans everywhere. As with all of our favorite musicians from back in the day, they aren’t getting any younger. So this will be your last chance to catch Electric Hot Tuna as they are hanging it up after this tour. Acoustic Hot Tuna will live on though. You’ll miss ’em when they’re gone so don’t miss ’em now.

    September 24 Gov’t Mule at Kodak Center

    Another hot one up on the ridge at the Kodak Center. Warren Haynes returns with Gov’t Mule with a new album in tow and a new bassist, Kevin Scott, who has played with Jimmy Herring, Wayne Krantz and others, to help them thunder through their signature blues jam rock. Sounds like fun!

    Tickets range from $35.50 to $85.50 and the show starts at 8pm.

    September 26 Drive-By Truckers at Water Street Music Hall

    Let’s keep this party rockin’! Another big rock show coming to town this month, Drive-By Truckers bringing their politically-charged Southern rock stylings to Water Street. It’ll be a raucous feel good by feeling bad affair. The night of solid songwriting will be punched up with alt-country band American Aquarium opening the show.

    Tickets are $40 and the show gets started at 8pm.


    September 29 Public Water Supply at Iron Smoke Distillery

    Round out the month with some local music courtesy of rising talents, Public Water Supply. This Americana Rock quintet has been making the rounds and turning heads over the past year. Time to go check em out and catch the buzz!

  • An Evening with LaChanze Comes To NYC’s Brand New Perelman Performing Arts Center

    Three-time Tony Award winner LaChanze announced a solo performance on Oct. 1 for the inaugural season of the Perelman Performing Arts Center, or PAC, titled ‘An Evening with LaChanze.’

    An Evening with LaChanze was co-written by LaChanze and Daniel “Koa” Beaty, directed by Jerry Dixon, and includes musical direction by Marco Paguia. 

    The evening is the first of PAC NYC’s Downtown Sessions series, which seeks to expand the facility’s music program with performances by Tony-winning artists. PAC is one of Manhattan’s newest performing arts spaces, opening this fall in the Financial District’s World Trade Center.

    An Evening with LaChanze will feature original music by Crystal Monee Hall, American Standards, and Broadway favorites.

    PAC NYC’s Downtown Sessions will extend throughout the fall, including other performances by Brian Stokes Mitchell and Ben Platt. The series seeks to bring audiences closer to beloved artists in intimate performances.

    LaChanze, as founder and current president of Black Theatre United, will also perform at BTU’s inaugural gala on October 30 at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City. Supported by Business for Good, the gala’s theme will be “A Salute to Broadway Legends: Past, Present, and Future,” and will highlight legends such as Common, Billy Porter, and Samuel L. Jackson.

  • Trans-Siberian Orchestra Announces Tour, Coming to Albany, Rochester, Buffalo and Elmont

    Prepare for a Christmas rock experience as the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) has announced its annual holiday tour. The multi-platinum rock group, which has consistently hit the touring charts for the past 15 years, unveiled the details of their highly anticipated 2023 winter tour, “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve – the Best of TSO & More.”

    This year’s tour promises a new and larger presentation of the beloved holiday tradition, “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve,” which has captured the hearts of multiple generations. TSO will visit 62 cities, including Albany, Rochester, Buffalo, and Belmont Park (the only New York Metro area show for the season).

    A product of the imagination of TSO’s late founder Paul O’Neill, and based on TSO’s CD and TV special, The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, follows the journey of a runaway who breaks into an abandoned vaudeville theater on December 24. While seeking shelter from the cold, the teen is discovered by the theater’s caretaker who uses the ghosts and spirits from the building’s past to turn her life around. Following the performance of the rock opera, 2023’s tour also boasts a rocking, blazing, and laser-lit second set containing more of TSO’s greatest hits, fan favorites, and surprises. If you are unable to attend, fans at home can watch a digitally restored The Ghosts of Christmas Eve on their local PBS station.

    For 27 years you have helped make Paul O’Neill’s TSO stories a part of your holiday tradition. And, for 27 years, our tradition has been to make every year’s tour better than the last for you. 2023 is no exception as this year’s tour will be the best ever. I can’t wait to see our ‘repeat offenders’ out at the shows and look forward to seeing the new faces as well.

    For New York TSO fans, TSO will be touring in Albany on November 29, Rochester on November 30, Buffalo on December 2, and Elmont on December 20. Be sure to grab tickets before they sell out if you plan to attend.

    Presales for TSO fan club members will be held on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. local time and Friday, Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. local time. The public on-sale is set to begin on Friday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. local time. Beginning with the public on sale, special $39 tickets will be available for one week or while supplies last. Keeping with O’Neill’s character, TSO will give at least $1 from every ticket sold to charity. To date, more than $18 million has been donated by the group.

  • Beastie Boys Square to be Officially Unveiled This Saturday

    This Saturday, Sept. 9, Beastie Boys Square will officially be unveiled at the corner of Ludlow and Rivington Streets in Manhattan after the New York City Council approved the renaming.

    The ceremony, taking place from 12-2 p.m. will feature appearances from Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz, including a DJ set by Jon Bless HiFi System.

    The Beastie Boys were an American rap group from New York City, formed in 1981. The group was composed of Michael “Mike D” Diamond, Adam “MCA” Yauch, and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz. Beastie Boys has sold 20 million records in the United States and had seven platinum-selling albums from 1986 to 2004. They are the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991.

    The historic corner was once home to Paul’s Boutique—the namesake of the Beastie Boys’ sophomore LP, released in 1989. Cultural advocate LeRoy McCartney spearheaded the campaign, fighting for a decade. He also did similar landmark-naming campaigns, like the Wu-Tang Clan (Wu-Tang District in Staten Island) and The Notorious B.I.G. (Brooklyn’s Christopher Wallace Way), and credits Council Member Chris Marte with helping to push the renaming.

    Last summer Marte gave credit to the group themselves for paving the way in the genre of hip-hop and thanked the local residents, businesses, politicians, and more who supported the fight for the street name. “I see it as a celebration. A celebration for the Lower East Side, a celebration for hip-hop, and especially a celebration for our community who has been organizing for a really long time to make this happen,” Marte also said.

    The unveiling of Beastie Boys Square coincides with the ongoing celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, which includes the first-ever theatrical screening of Spike Jonze’s Beastie Boys Story, taking place at IFC Center on September 8 and 9. 

  • Albany’s 21st Annual Riverfront Jazz Festival Returns this Weekend

    The City of Albany’s 21st Annual Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival will kick off on Saturday, September 9th. The all-day free event will begin at 12 pm at the Corning Preserve Boat Launch under the 787 bridge. Five live acts will take the stage throughout the day, concluding at 8 pm with a fireworks display.

    Since the debut event in 2002, the City of Albany Jazz Festival features an eclectic array of musical greats, acclaimed up-and-coming artists, as well as local favorites. The festival features food, beverages, and great vendors for all ages. Admission is free.

    Local favorites include Kevin McNeal, an Albany native, who excels in the local jazz scene. He leads his group, BluesWing, for the first live performance of the event.

    In addition to music, the Henry Johnson Award for Distinguished Community Services will be presented to Valerie Alexander-Moseley. Alexander-Moseley is a local community leader with a passion for economic and social justice throughout West Hill and the city of Albany.

    Ground rules for the event include no glass, animals, or recording of performances. All City of Albany parks are now curb-to-curb tobacco-free and marijuana-free. In the event of inclement weather, the Jazz Festival will be held at the Corning Preserve Boat Launch. More information and updates are available at albanyevents.org.

    UBS Arena announced New York’s favorite Billy Joel will return to his hometown this New Year’s Eve for a landmark show at the brand-new arena. His first show at Belmont Park’s new arena and his first hometown Long Island appearance since 2018, Billy Joel will help crowds ring in the New Year beginning at 9:30 pm on Dec 31.

    A recurrent New York City area performer and Long Island native, Billy Joel is a staple of Madison Square Garden lineups. As a recipient of legendary awards such as the Kennedy Center Honors and multiple Grammy Awards, Joel is one of the most celebrated musicians of all time.

    UBS Arena at Belmont Park is one of the New York area’s largest entertainment and sports venues. Opened in November 2021, the arena is home to the New York Islanders, one of the city’s own NHL teams.
