  • SNL Goes Latin With Host Ana De Armas and Musical Guest Karol G

    Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA award nominee Ana De Armas shocked and stunned viewers with her role as Marilyn Monroe in the biopic Blonde, as well as her other roles, including the critically acclaimed mystery Knives Out. This week she hosted Saturday Night Live with Latin musical guest Karol G.

    In honor of the warm weather recently, Saturday Night Live’s cold open took place in Central Park with an award show called the “First Warm Day of the Year.” Reporters (Heidi Gardner and Bowen Yang) took turns interviewing various people you’d see throughout the park, from runners, perverts, first-time rollerbladers, disgruntled park employees, and more.

    The monologue opened with Ana De Armas showcasing her bilingual skills, swapping from Spanish to English, talking about how she learned to speak English from the TV show Friends, and different acting classes. Armas discussed her Oscar nomination as well as the fact that she is becoming a U.S. citizen in just three weeks. She finished it off by saying how she feels like she made it because she is hosting Saturday Night Live.

    The second sketch, “Matt Schatt Game Show” featured Kenan Thompson as the game show host, with Ana De Armas playing an attractive wife, married to a nerdy, unattractive man with a humourous amount of nipples, played by Mikey Day. Lately, pop culture has been overtaken by the new Barbie movie trailer and SNL references that, utilizing American Girl dolls in a fake movie trailer, bringing the dolls to life.

    Other sketches include “Album Recording Session,” about a producer (Devon Walker) trying to record his producer tag, starring Armas and Ego Nwodim as the girls recording it, messing up and joking about his car, his ability to get women, and more. Following that is a sketch about a Spanish class, with musical guest Karol G making an appearance towards the end, singing the Spanish alphabet. The “Please Don’t Destroy” sketch spoke about a bad night out, where they cannot remember what happened, suffering hangxiety.

    Colombian singer/songwriter Karol G, described as a reggaeton and Latin trap artist, experiments with different genres throughout her music. She has amassed over 50 million monthly Spotify listeners and has over one billion streams. Her first song of the night “MIENTRAS ME CURO DEL CORA” off of her critically acclaimed record Mañana Será Bonito featured background singers humming the tune to “Don’t Worry Be Happy,” the tempo which is sampled in the track. Everyone was dressed in brown and beige, with a satin curtain background, dancing to the different beat changes the song includes, making the listener want to get up and groove. The vibes are happier on the song as Karol G sings in Spanish, catering to native and non-native speakers alike with her infectious energy and overall good mood.

    Weekend Update rammed in on the Trump arrest and various politicians, from Supreme Court Justices to those voting against a women’s right to choose. Guests include Kenan Thompson as Funky Kong, talking about getting cut from the new Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Sarah Sherman as Genesis Fry, a meditation guru attempting to make Colin Jost become intuitive while making fun of his ego and soft arms. SNL makes it a point to introduce the first nonbinary cast member Molly Kearney as who they are, not a character. Kearney spoke about trans rights, which are a topic of discussion amongst lawmakers, trying to limit their rights, but Kearney makes it a point to discuss how important their rights are, and that we need to protect trans youth.

    The final sketches included Armas and others in “Enter Stage Woof: Acting School for Dogs,” featuring actual dogs on the SNL stage, and Bowen Yang, holder of the Guinness Book World Record for the longest nails, with his wife, played by Armas. The sketch takes a shocking turn as Yang cuts his fingernails off, saving their relationship. Karol G performed her last song “TUS GAFTAS” with a completely different vibe change, suddenly in a spiky black outfit laying against a black car, with an all-female backing band, also in all black. The song is heavier than the last, with melodic guitars and a fast drum beat, showing her versatility. She wows the crowd with her stage presence, moving all around as she sings, not stopping the swaying of her hips even when the song stops.

  • CMAC Events Announces Roc The Lake Festival With Pop Trio AJR

    The Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) in Canandaigua has announced the 2023 Roc The Lake Festival with the renowned trio AJR as a headliner. On July 17, fans can jam to their favorite songs by AJR, and a lineup including Chelsea Cutler, Lawrence Blake Rose and Almost Monday.

    AJR, is a renowned pop trio of brothers that has garnered an abundance of success since their formation in 2012. Over the past decade AJR has accumulated billions of streams, released a platinum album, double-platinum single, triple-platinum single, and four platinum singles. The band has also been ranked #1 on the Top Alternative Albums and Rock Albums Charts following their biggest first-week debut at the Neotheater in 2019. Apple Music and Spotify showed appreciation for the trio’s electric sound by placing AJR’s “Sober Up” & “Weak” among the Best Rock and Alt Songs of the 2010s. Fans can rock out to songs from the brother’s fourth full-length album, OK ORCHESTRA at the Roc The Lake Festival. 

    Chelsea Cutler is a singer, songwriter, and the producer of introspective EDM.  After signing to Ultra Records in 2017, the vocalist released mixtapes such as Sleeping with Roses I and II and a full-length debut, How to Be Human. Lawrence Blake Rose is an upcoming Australian singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles.  The gifted musician recently released a new single “Rest Of Us.”

    The San Diego based trio, Almost Monday quickly transformed from garage band to an upbeat pop sensation.  While only having a few songs released, the boys gained a tremendous amount of fame and millions of streams since the release of their disco-infused track “Broken People” in 2020.

  • Paul Simon Announces New Album, Seven Psalms, Out May 19th

    Paul Simon has announced the upcoming release of his highly anticipated musical work, Seven Psalms, which will be available on May 19th.

    During his distinguished career spanning six decades, musician Paul Simon has produced timeless masterpieces, such as Bridge Over Troubled Water, Sounds of Silence, and Graceland, has received 16 Grammy Awards and has been twice inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.     This new project is intended to be listened to as one continuous piece, a 33-minute, seven-movement composition.   • UB40 Anniversary Tour “UB45” Stops at The Space at Westbury

    Reggae-pop band UB40 is celebrating its 45th anniversary with its “UB45” summer tour throughout July, which will stop at The Space at Westbury on July 6.

    The band will perform their hits “Red Red Wine,” “Food For Thought,” and “(I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You,” among others, on their anniversary tour, in addition to being joined by special guests such as Maxi Priest, Inner Circle, Third World, and Big Mountain. Concurrently, UB40 will release a new album this summer, titled UB45, with new songs and reworked classics, and a yet-to-be-announced release date.

    Guitarist/vocalist Robin Campbell said of UB40’s US tour, “We love playing the U.S., and celebrating our 45th year and having a new album makes our return even more exciting.”

    UB40 was originally formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England, and its current members consist of Jimmy Brown (drums), Robin Campbell (guitar/vocals), Earl Falconer (bass/vocals), Norman Lamont Hassan (percussion/vocals), Martin Meredith (keyboards/WX7/saxophone), Tony Mullings (keyboards), Laurence Parry (trumpet/flugelhorn/trombone), Ian Thompson (saxophone) – and Matt Doyle (lead vocals.) Doyle only joined the band recently, taking over for a retired Duncan Campbell after Doyle’s group, KIOKO, opened for UB40 at The Royal Albert Hall in 2018, and later supported them on UB40’s subsequent UK tour and European tours. UB40 released their debut studio album, Signing Off, in 1980, and since then have released a total of 20 studio albums, most recently 2021’s Bigga Baggariddim.

    UB40’s 45th-anniversary summer tour is in support of their upcoming studio album, UB45.     The Space at Westbury originally opened as Westbury Movie Theater in 1927, with a screening of Hula, starring Clara Bow, while The University of Maryland Collegian’s Band thrilled the audience with a spectacular performance. One of the six theaters built by Salvatore Calderone in Nassau County, the Westbury Theatre eventually closed due to a decline in patronage in the late 70s. Eight years ago, Cyrus Hakakian and his partners saved the Westbury Theater from demolition, and the venue now enters a new chapter of its illustrious history as The Space at Westbury.

  • Sixties Spectacular Comes to Proctors Theatre on April 29

    The incredible four act Sixties Spectacular comes to Proctors Theatre in Schenectady on Saturday, April 29, featuring Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone as headliner.

    Co-headlining the concert are Jay and the Americans.  The band started with four teenagers singing in Sandy Yaguda’s basement, and they are still going strong today.  In 1960, they were signed by the dynamic producer/songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller to United Artists and, starting in 1962, the group charted twelve top 10 records.  In 1962, “She Cried” went to #5 on the charts.  Jay Traynor, the first “Jay,” was the lead singer. Traynor worked in Schenectady for decades as a camera man for Channel 6.  He was replaced by Jay #2, Jay Black, who was lead singer on the rest of their hits.  In 1963, “Only in America” was a hit.  In 1964, “Come a Little Bit Closer” went to #2 on the charts, “Let’s Lock the Door (and Throw Away the Key)” was top 20, and Jay and the Americans were part of The Beatles first American tour, and they played at Carnegie Hall on the Rolling Stones tour. 

    From the age of fifteen, Peter Noone gained international fame as “Herman,” lead singer of Herman’s Hermits.  His classic hits have sold more than sixty million records and include #1 singles “I’m Into Something Good,” “I’m Henry VIII, I Am,” and “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter.”  Other hit singles are “Listen People,” “Silhouettes,” “Can’t You Hear my Heartbeat,” “A Must to Avoid,” “There’s a Kind of Hush” and “No Milk Today.”  In all, 14 singles and 7 albums went gold, and the Hermits were twice named Cashbox’s “Entertainer of the Year.”  Very photogenic, Peter graced the cover of nearly every international publication, including Time Magazine; performed on hundreds of top-rated television shows such as Ed Sullivan, Jackie Gleason, Dean Martin and Danny Kaye; starred in ABC’s musical “The Canterville Ghost” (Hallmark Hall of Fame’s presentation of the classic Pinocchio); and in three feature films for MGM. 

    In the 1970s, Noone composed songs and produced records for David Bowie and Debby Boone; played the leading roles in full-scale theatrical productions of “Aladdin,” “Sinbad the Sailor” and, in the 1980s, stared on Broadway as the dashing hero Frederic in the New York Shakespeare Festival’s production of “The Pirates of Penzance” and then reprised the role at the world-famous Drury Lane Theatre in London.  For four years, Peter was the host of VH1’s “My Generation” and the PBS Special, “The British Invasion Returns.”  He was a guest star on many prime time tv shows such as “Married with Children,” “Quantum Leap,” “Too Close for Comfort” and most recently starred in the recurring role of Paddington on the forever popular CBS Soap opera “As the World Turns.”  In 2007, he sang “There’s a Kind of Hush” on  American Idol and mentored the male contestants. 

    Dennis Tufano was the original lead singer on all The Buckinghams’ hits.  Born in Chicago, Dennis inherited his musical talents from his father, a singer who also played violin, sax and harmonica.  The Buckinghams had a string of hits, including the #1 smash “Kind of a Drag.”  Other hits include “Don’t You Care,” “Hey Baby, They’re Playing our Song, “ “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” and “Susan.”  A true Renaissance man, Dennis Tufano spent his years in Los Angeles as an actor, voiceover artist, stuntman, producer and co-founder of the renowned improv voice-ensemble LA MadDogs.  He also toured with Olivia Newton-John, performing duets on such songs as “Suddenly” and “You’re the One That I Want.”  Part of his show is a tribute to one of his hero’s, Bobby Darin.  Dennis still looks and sings great as he recreates his many hit songs. 

    Opening the show will be the 1910 Fruitgum Company.  They defined “bubble gum pop” in the 60s.  Their hits included “Simon Says” (#4 US/#2 UK charts), “1,2,3 Red Light” (#5) and “Indian Giver” (#5).  All three gold records sold over a million copies, with “Simon Says” selling almost 5 million.  Their other hit was “May I take a Giant Step.”  Let by original lead singer, Frank Jeckell, they are a fun, exciting way to open the Sixties Spectacular.

  • Big Time Rush “Can’t Get Enough Tour” stopping at SPAC, Bethel Woods and Jones Beach this Summer

    Big Time Rush have announced their upcoming “Can’t Get Enough Tour” with the band set to take the stage at Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in Saratoga Springs, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel and Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh during July.

    Big Time Rush became an overnight boy band sensation in November 2009 during the launching of a scripted TV show of the same name on Nickelodeon. The show highlighted the Hollywood escapades of four hockey players from Minnesota after they were chosen to form a pop band. Throughout the show’s success Carlos, Kendall, James, and Logan came to life as a band off the screen releasing three full length albums and performing worldwide. Big Time Rush concluded in July 2013 and after four years of touring as a band, the guys went their separate ways but remained close friends through the years.  

    The band is also being honored with a celebratory day known as Big Time Rush Day on April 4. Emily Larson, the Mayor of Duluth, Minnesota will make an official pronouncement from the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center making BTR day a national holiday. Duluth holds special significance for Big Time Rush since it is the hometown of the four band members. Duluth will also have a ceremonial street renamed as tribute to Big Time Rush. 

    In addition to the celebratory day and international tour, BTR announced a highly anticipated new album that will be released on June 9. The album will be Big Time Rush’s first new studio album in a decade. The guys have begun working on the album in 2022 and are thrilled to share it with their Rushers worldwide. 

    In attempts to bring joy to their fans during quarantine, the members of Big Time Rush gathered to send a message of love and togetherness. Following the announcement was a socially distant performance of an acoustic version of their smash hit, “Worldwide.” The band received 10+ million streams because of hysteria amongst their fans and in the media. Furthermore, four seasons of the television series were added to Netflix in March 2021. BTR ended 2021 with a release of their first single in 8 years, “Call It Like I See It.” They also performed at iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in Philadelphia and had two sold out shows in Chicago and NYC. 

    The sensational band kicked off 2022 with the launch of their wildly successful Forever Tour. with over 300,000 tickets across North America. They also released new music, with hit singles “Honey,” “Fall,” and “Not Giving You Up.” BTR also performed live at the Latin Kids Choice Awards, iHeart Music Festival, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the premiere of their first pay-per-view event, “The City Is Ours.” It was a concert film that captured the band’s sold-out show at Madison Square Garden.

  • Molly Shannon brings back Classic Characters and Jonas Brothers perform “Waffle House” on SNL

    The Easter weekend episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL) featured longtime cast member Molly Shannon, alongside musical guests Jonas Brothers.

    The cold open featured James Austin Johnson as indicted former President Trump, interrupting The Last Supper to compare himself to Jesus, and pointing out where he would have done better.

    Molly Shannon, who has been on a roll with The White Lotus and I Love That for You, in addition to her biography Hello, Molly! available in paperback starting April 11, opened the show with a song alongside featured players.

    If you were looking for references to classic Shannon characters, you were in luck. Jeannie ‘Don’t get me Started’ Darcy was featured in her own “Selective Startage” Netflix special, bringing back the super dry humor.

    Please Don’t Destroy played Molly 2K23, a video game series based on Shannon’s life, and hidden within the only Mary Catherine Gallagher reference of the night.

    Nick Jonas joined the 5-timers club this week, having hosted and performed sans brothers, both of whom have played Studio 8H three times. Nick would stop by during “The Play” and the trio would appear in the final skit of the night, featuring Sally O’Malley, who can kick, stretch and kick.

  • Regina Spektor Confirms Summer Tour Dates with Three Shows in New York

    Acclaimed musician Regina Spektor is going on a 2023 summer tour, which includes performances at three music venues in New York: the Kodak Center in Rochester on Aug. 1, SummerStage in Central Park on Aug. 24, and the West Hampton Beach Performing Arts (WHBAC) on Aug. 25.

    The tour comes a year after the release of Spektor’s latest studio album, Home, before and after. Additionally, the performer will make an appearance at Mikhail Baryshnikov’s 75th birthday celebration at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in Tivoli, New York, alongside Laurie Anderson, Diana Krall, and Kaoru Watanabe.

    Russian-Jewish-American singer, songwriter, and pianist Regina Spektor, whose genres range from Anti-folk, Indie-Pop, and alternative rock, was born in Moscow, Russia, and since moving to the United States, has made musical waves in New York. Spektor has received a sign on the Bronx Walk of Fame, and Mayor Bill Diblasio proclaimed June 11, 2019, as “Regina Spektor Day.” She has been making music for over 20 years, with her debut studio album, 11:11, being released in 2001, and 2022’s Home, before and after marked her eighth studio release.

    The album’s supporting single, “Up the Mountain,” has been praised by several media outlets, including the New York Times, which wrote, “It’s mystical and earthy, moving from tolling piano to implacable beat, with strings and horns ganging up.” Grammy-nominated Spektor first saw commercial success with the RIAA Gold-certified LP, Begin to Hope, which includes the singles “On the Radio,” “Better”, “Samson,” and “Fidelity,” which climbed the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

  • Third Annual Over Yondr Festival Announces 2023 Lineup

    The Over Yondr Festival announced its 2023 lineup, coming to Greenville in the picturesque Catskills Mountain foothills from June 16-18.

    The Over Yondr Festival is a three-day phone-free weekend, meaning that festival goers will secure their phones in pouches in their possession, providing a rare opportunity for people to disengage from their devices, but there will still be designated areas for attendees to use their phones. The festival was founded in 2019 by Yondr, the pioneers of phone-free performances, as a way to help people disconnect in such a hyperconnected world.

    The company has zero social media accounts, and does little advertising, so people aren’t bombarded with so many notifications and advertisements, more than they already are. They regularly work with Dave Chappelle, Madonna, Jack White, Childish Gambino, Ali Wong, Kevin Hart, and more to provide these phone-free experiences. The three-day weekend features live music, games, food trucks, full bars, and hot showers in the picturesque and cozy valley town of Greenville.

    The lineup provides audience members with a weekend of sonic discovery, featuring performances from both established artists and exciting up-and-coming artists. Headliners include the unique pop ensemble U.S. Girls who recently released their latest album Bless This Mess to critical acclaim, Brooklyn-based artist Madison McFerrin who blends a unique mix of R&B, jazz, and electronic music, and high-energy indie rock band Melt. Additional acts include Kate Davis who just released her latest album Fish Bowl last week, as well as Miss Grit, a rising indie-pop songwriter who released her debut record Follow The Cyborg earlier this year.

    Festival passes are on sale now for the third annual Over Yondr Festival, taking place from June 16-18. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets early as only 400 total passes will be made available for this year’s exclusive festival experience.   • Sid Seth Drops Sizzling “Hopeless War,” More Music to Come

    Singer-songwriter Sid Seth has a new single “Hopeless War,” out now, and announced that more new music is coming. The new single, released via Earmilk, was accompanied by a music video in support. If “Hopeless War,” is any indication, Seth will have a long and successful career ahead of him.

    Sid Seth is originally from India and moved to New York City to pursue a career in music in 2018, studying at the Manhattan School of Music. His music is a combination of soul and pop, drawing inspiration from The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Boney M, and Abba, while his father introduced him to the rhythm and melodies of Bollywood, Hindustani Folk Music, and Indian Classical music. Seth’s enriching sound can be honorably compared to the likes of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Ella Fitzgerald.

    Since moving to New York City, Seth has performed at several music venues, including the Rockwood Music Hall, Parkside Lounge, the Bowery Electric, Breaking Sound, Feinstein’s 54 Below, and the Green Room, on top of multiple cities in India. Seth has received acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone India, Earmilk, Celeb Mix, Variance, and Atwood Magazine, and, with thousands of streams across his repertoire, we are likely to see much more of him in the future.

    The strength of “Hopeless War,” comes from its versatility. Almost everyone can relate to that feeling, whether it be in a romantic relationship, friendship, or even familial relationship, when something is just not working anymore, and you have to let each other go. Enough is enough. With Seth’s powerful lyrics, hopefully, anyone struggling with whatever situation they’re in can find the courage to do whatever they need to do. Because of this, it’s safe to assume future music by Seth, which has already been confirmed by the singer, will similarly resonate with audiences.

    Of his newest track, Sid wrote: “‘Hopeless War’ comes from a classic situation: a battle of ‘you did this, I did that.’ Both parties go crazy, and after a certain point in the argument, it doesn’t even make sense anymore. Someone takes the lead and is like, ‘Okay, let’s just end this, it’s pointless.’ It’s that scene. And after all that, it leaves you with silence and the question lingering ‘where do we go now?’
