  • Fingers of Gold: Holly Bowling plays Lark Hall, begins Fall Tour

    A brisk fall night on Lark Street was warm and inviting at The Eleven, celebrating its grand opening with a fitting artist upstairs at Lark Hall, pianist Holly Bowling.

    Much has changed in the past decade since Bowling began playing solo shows, having transcribed and performed Phish jams (not just songs, the improv sections too) and gave fresh takes on the catalog of the Grateful Dead, even having appearances with Phil Lesh as one of his friends.

    Bowling now enters her second decade of live performances with an evolving solo career in the jam scene, having branched out into Ghost Light with Tom Hamilton and company, played regularly with Greensky Bluegrass, taken part in the immersive Musical Sojourns in Portugal this past October, and brought to life the ever unique Wilderness Series – performing at beautiful vistas within and around our National Park System.

    The past decade has been a whirlwind of growth and opportunities, including giving birth to her and husband Jeffery’s first child. Holly Bowling has been about as busy as one can, and shares how she has worked towards finding balance with it all:

    One thing I took away from the pandemic was a new acceptance of how to be creative in touring and that there’s a lot of different ways to play music for people. You have to do what makes sense for the situation you find yourself in at that particular time, whether it’s finding ways to create and play music when all the venues are shut down or finding ways to tour that make sense as a parent of a young child. I’m not sure I’d say I’ve figured out how to balance it all. I think finding balance of any kind is a challenge for most touring musicians. It’s a constantly evolving process, and I have to keep reminding myself to find ways to make it work for what my life is today and that what works today isn’t necessarily going to be what worked before or what’s going to work five years from now. And that’s fine – maybe even good.

    On this evening, Bowling took the stage and performed as she always has, with focus and attention to detail, showing no signs of slowing down a well-paced musical career. Bowling last played Lark Hall with Ghost Light in October 2022, and sought out owner Jennifer Miller to plan a show in the future, with November 11th – 11/11 – being the best date for a show, adding in a nod to the Grateful Dead in the process.

    With tube lighting on either side of the stage, a mirror ball above and four colored spots shining down and moving slowly along with the tempo, the stage was set, a grand piano and bench awaiting Bowling.

    The first set featured the entire “Terrapin Station” suite, broken up into two sections, opening up with the first half of the song, “Lady with a Fan” and “Terrapin Station,” deep and layered, neatly falling into Phish’s “Fast Enough For You,” with the addition of looping to give the Rift track a new twist. 30 minutes later, the audience offered rousing applause.

    With the use of effects pedals processing the piano sound, Bowling illuminated the improvisation jam that led from “About to Run”, and found its way into the rest of the “Terrapin Station” suite, “At a Siding” and “Terrapin Flyer,” finally ending the set with an ever-gorgeous “Divided Sky.” The emergence of a greater scope of sounds from the piano – whether it be with mallets, e-bows, fishing line or pedals – adds depth to the music. Said Bowling, “The piano has always been the instrument that can be closest to a full orchestra and I just want to play with as many sounds as possible.”

    The second set opened with a heavy “St. Stephen” where Bowling explored the most familiar parts of the song using a tribal synth sound via manipulation of the inner piano strings, creating a hypnotic trance (accentuated briefly by a police siren wailing down the street.) “William Tell Bridge” developed out of this trance, Bowling playing the inner strings again, the pair of songs harkening the call of “The Eleven,” which would show up promptly at 10:11 (that’s 11:11 without DST). A song very rarely played by Bowling, “The Eleven” gave way to Phish’s “If I Could,” an emotional composition in its own right, and with light internal plucking and looping, Bowling summoned the intro of “Theme From the Bottom,” which took deep turns and twists, eventually fading into “Morning Dew” to close the set.

    “Waste” would fall into the encore slot, with Bowling greeting and talking to fans after the show, everyone filing downstairs through The Eleven where Quantum Cosmic Trio continued on with the celebration of a grand opening, a grand performance and a grand pianist.

  • In Focus: David Broza & Omer Avital’s Wilson Live Experience

    This past Sunday, November 12, City Winery New York and American Friends of NATAL held a special afternoon of music featuring a rare combination of Omer Avital’s Wilson Live Experience, a group of all-Israeli Jazz musicians who put on live shows mostly from their space on Wilson Avenue in Brooklyn and Israeli Superstar singer David Broza. Concert proceeds went to go to those suffering from PTSD in Israel.

    The pair have collaborated before on David Broza’s previous release called TEFILA, where Broza took the traditional Jewish Friday Night Prayers and recomposed them along with the help of Omer Avital, who wrote the orchestration parts. The pair performed the entire piece along with a full choir, string, and horn section at Temple Emanu-El earlier this year.

    Lost Radio Rounders will present “Scoundrels!” at the Voorheesville Library on November 16th.

    “Bad behavior has brought us some very good folk songs,” states Tom Lindsay, vocalist/guitarist for Acoustic Americana trio Lost Radio Rounders. Lindsay, along with bandmates Michael Eck and Paul Jossman head to the Voorheesville Public Library on Thursday, November 16th for a program featuring songs about liars, cheats, thieves, and murderers.

    Since their founding in 2009, Lost Radio Rounders have specialized in themed programs such as Cowboy
    Songs & Frontier Ballads, Lincoln & Liberty, and Songs America Voted By. Lindsay remarked that “These
    programs are especially well received at libraries and historical societies where audiences are keenly
    interested in what the songs may tell us about the place and time in which they were created.” Back in
    October the group performed Blue Collar Blues: Songs of American Workers at the Troy Savings Bank
    Music Hall.

    While Lindsay and Lost Radio Rounders co-founder Michael Eck have both amassed an almost
    encyclopedic knowledge of American folk music over the years, they never forget that they are
    entertainers first. “Even with a program like Scoundrels!” said Lindsay, “there will be humor, albeit
    somewhat dark- and plenty of chances to sing along!”

  • Dumbo Gets Mad Gets Rochester Dancing

    Getting people out to a show on a Monday night is a hard sell. Getting people out for a show on the first Monday after our clocks turn back and darkness falls before lunch has even been digested is even tougher. Getting people out to a show on a dark Monday night when Tool is also in town is near impossible. So the impossible was achieved on Monday, November 6, when the Bug Jar had Italian quartet Dumbo Gets Mad on the bill and drew a solid crowd to come check them out.

    That crowd was treated to an extremely fun and danceable set. And dance they did! The quartet, guitar, keys, bass and drums, put their own psychedelic spin on a wide swath of genres. Synth-pop, surf, reggae, late night grooves, and heavy rock all reared their heads through the evening in a set that spanned their 10-year catalog.

    “Congratulations” gave the Bug Jar’s mirror ball a bit of nostalgia with it’s disco beat, slinky bass and infectious groove. Slow and sexy “Indian Food” gave the dance floor a bit of a breather. “Self Esteem” ratcheted the energy way up through the upside-down roof, bombastic bass blasts met raucous guitar in an absolute rager. The band had an endless bag of catchy synth lines, and “Plumy Tale” ended the set with yet another one.

    Dumbo Gets Mad was having as good a time as the crowd, and exhibited their own set of dance moves from the stage. Urged back for “one more song,” the band launched into a guitar and drums workout that had lead Dumbo Luca Bergomi grooving with his guitar through the crowd, the dance party on and off the stage ultimately coalescing in the end.

  • Free Music at Noon Series Returns to Troy

    The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall’s Music at Noon series has returned for the 2023-2024 season with The Lost Radio Rounders on Oct. 10. The rest of the year brings an eclectic lineup to the venue, featuring a wide variety of acts.

    Since 1988, on the second Tuesday of each month from October to May, the free Music at Noon concert series has presented exceptional musicians with diverse musical styles. Returning in full swing on Nov. 14 is Carl Gutowski, a flutist based in the Hudson Valley and Cape Cod who has been performing in solo and chamber music settings for over 30 years. When he isn’t creating music he is a Software Engineer with nearly 30 years of experience developing software systems for air traffic control, publishing, education, e-commerce, and finance.

    Joining him is pianist Yalin Chi from Beijing, China, who made her debut with the Central Opera Orchestra before moving to the United States to study at Interlochen Arts Academy. She has performed and worked with musicians from across the globe, and studied at Julliard for her undergraduate and master’s degrees.

    Other performances at the Music at Noon series include singer/songwriter Alan Goldberg, performing a mix of originals and covers on Dec. 12. On Jan. 9, the Vermont-based Woodwind ensemble Heliand Consort performs, featuring a pre-show workshop titled “Explore Double Reeds & Piano: Demonstration & Instrument Petting Zoo.” Students will learn about chamber music and each instrument: piano, oboe, and bassoon, and how each of them operates. The workshop is free, register here.

    On Feb. 13, Korean classical fusion group CelloGayageum performs, with a free preshow workshop titled “Exploring Cello & Gayageum through Korean Folk Music,” where students learn about Korean culture through sing-alongs and immersive activities. Musicians Yvonne Chavez Hansbrough, Young Kim, and Paul Quigley perform at Music at Noon on March 12, featuring the flute, guitar, and piano.

    April 9 brings Spira, a group made up of Jamecyn Morey, violin, Brittany Zellman, viola, David Bebe, cello, and Chrysi Nanou, piano. There is a free pre-show workshop titled “Explore Bowed String Instruments and Piano: Demonstration & Instrument Petting Zoo,” showcasing their respective instruments.

    The final Music at Noon performance is on May 14 with Findlay Cockrell, an 87-year-old pianist, who taught music and performed at UAlbany and throughout the whole capital District, retiring from the university after 40 years in 2006.

  • Jam for Tots Celebrates 10 Years with 2023 Toy Drive

    The 2023 holiday season has arrived, and with it a spirit of giving and supporting those most in need in our local communities. Jam for Tots will once again be held at venues across New York State, bringing live music fans together for great shows while collecting toys to brighten the spirits of children statewide.

    For 10 years, Jam for Tots has been held across New York State and the Northeast, and we celebrate this year with 10 venues around the state where fans are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy for a child (under 13) to drop in the donation box. These toys will be brought to local charities within the venue’s community, to ensure that these toys brighten the day of children within the local area.

    Shows will be hosted by multiple beloved venues, including Buffalo Iron Works, Bug Jar, Funk ‘n Waffles Syracuse, Lark Hall, Putnam Place, Stewart House, The Strand Theatre Hudson Falls, The Hollow Bar + Kitchen, The Sting (Oswego) and The Waterhole. We gratefully thank these venues for their support of this worthy cause.

    Things kick off in Albany on November 22 at The Hollow Bar and Kitchen with two of Albany’s favorite artists – Glass Pony, with special guest Laura Leigh – joining together to celebrate Thanksgiving Eve.

  • Alanis Morissette Announces The Triple Moon Tour, Stops in Wantagh and Bethel

    Seven-time GRAMMY Award-winning singer/songwriter Alanis Morissette has announced 31 North America shows for The Triple Moon Tour, with stops in Wantagh and Bethel. This new tour will feature special guest Rock and Roll Hall of Fame icon Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, along with support from Morgan Wade.

    Since 1995, Alanis Morissette has been one of the most influential singer-songwriter-musicians in contemporary music. Her deeply expressive music and performances have earned vast critical praise and seven Grammy awards. Morissette’s 1995 debut, “Jagged Little Pill,” was followed by nine more eclectic and acclaimed albums. She has contributed musically to theatrical releases and has acted on the big and small screen.

    Outside of entertainment, she is an avid supporter of female empowerment, as well as spiritual, psychological, and physical wellness. In 2001, Alanis was awarded the Global Tolerance Award by the Friends of the United Nations for her contributions to promoting tolerance through the arts. In 2016, Alanis launched Conversation with Alanis Morissette, a monthly podcast that features conversations with a variety of revered authors, doctors, educators, and therapists, covering a wide range of psychosocial topics extending from spirituality to developmentalism to art.

    On December 5, 2019, “Jagged Little Pill” the musical made its Broadway debut at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City. The show was nominated for fifteen Tony Awards and won 2 Tony Awards at the 2021 ceremony. In July of 2020, Alanis released her ninth studio album, Such Pretty Forks In The Road, to rave reviews. In August of 2021, Alanis kicked off her sold out world tour celebrating 25 years of Jagged Little Pill. The tour became the #1 female-fronted tour from 2021 and also one of the Top Worldwide Tours of 2021 selling over 500,000 tickets. Alanis also stars in Fox’s sitcom, “The Great North,” which is set to return for season 4 in 2024.

    To celebrate the upcoming holiday season, Morissette released a new Christmas single on November 3. The track “Last Christmas” is a part of an EP featuring previously released Alanis holiday covers of John Lennon & Yoko Ono’s “Happy Xmas (War is Over)”, William Chatterton Dix’s “What child is this?”, and Katherine Kennicott Davis’ “Little Drummer Boy”. All four covers are available on a limited edition red and green 10’ vinyl as well as all streaming platforms.

    Joan Jett grew up during a time when rock ‘n’ roll was off limits to girls and women, but as a teenager, she promptly blew the door to the boys’ club right off its hinges. After forming her band the Blackhearts in 1979, with whom Jett has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she has had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.”

    With a career that has spanned music, film, television, Broadway, and humanitarianism, Joan Jett remains a potent force and inspiration to generations of fans worldwide. As a producer, she has overseen seminal albums by Bikini Kill, and the Germs’ LA punk masterpiece ‘GI.’

    Jett and Kenny Laguna (her longtime producer and music partner) co-founded Blackheart Records from the trunk of Kenny’s Cadillac after rejections from no less than 23 labels. 40 years later, Blackheart is a thriving entertainment company producing music, film and television, and continues to champion emerging bands. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts continue to tour the world with headlining shows alongside fellow rock legends like The Who, Green Day, Heart, and Foo Fighters. ‘Bad Reputation,’ a documentary about Jett’s life, premiered to critical acclaim at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Following up on the bands 2022 release Changeup, their first-ever acoustic album, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts EP Mindsets will be a RSD First vinyl release on 11/24. Mindsets is available to stream now.

  • GRAMMY-nominated band boygenius Rocks SNL, Timothée Chalamet Returns

    Timothée Chalamet hosted Saturday Night Live for the second time, his first in 2020. Soon he is starring as Willy Wonka in Wonka, a role he can finally promote now that the Writer’s Strike has ended. Rock band boygenius was the musical guest for the night, rocking the Studio 8H stage, celebrating their six GRAMMY nominations.

    The cold open featured a spoof on the 2024 Republican Presidential Debate, with Kenan Thompson as Lester Holt. James Austin Johnson reprised his iconic role of Donald Trump, making comments on the former President’s recent arrests and breaking the fourth wall, introducing the actors playing the different politicians.

    Timothée Chalamet’s monologue referenced the Writer’s Strike, set to the tone of the Willy Wonka song, his new film coming out December 15. Singing along to the tune, Chalamet pokes fun at long films and AI, bringing out SNL actor Marcello Hernandez to rap about having a “baby face,” but still being attractive. Kenan Thompson also made an appearance rapping about his baby face not changing since he was in his popular Kenan & Kel sitcom.

    Hip Hop just celebrated 50 years, and what better way to celebrate it than a SNL sketch? Bringing in Rick Rubin (James Austin Jones), (Kenan Thompson), and Chalamet as $mokecheddadthaassgetta, a white Soundcloud-type rapper that should definitely not be there. Poking fun at the modern rappers of the day, the sketch Chalamet busting out his best rapping skills, to the distaste of the legends sharing the stage.

    Britney Spear’s new memoir has been shaking the earth lately, calling out those around her including Justin Timberlake. SNL adds some humor to this tense situation, bringing in some influential people to read parts of her memoir, including parody versions of John Mulaney, Bill Hader, and even a parody of Chalamet himself.

    In a sequel to Chalamet’s old sketch “Tiny Horse,” he brings out his singing abilities in “Giant Horse,” a sound sure to go viral again on TikTok. By the end of the sketch, the horse goes back to its tiny size, bringing everything full circle.

    boygenius is comprised of established musicians Phoebe Bridgers, who achieved well-known status with her song “Motion Sickness,” Lucy Dacus, who went viral for her song “Night Shift,” and Julien Baker, an established guitarist and singer with a couple of well-known albums under her belt. Their music has achieved cult status in the indie rock world, releasing their debut album the record only this year. With melodic and infectious tones, boygenius captivates audiences with its depressing and nostalgic vibes and energetic and rowdy live shows.

    For their first song, boygenius, dressed in all suits, sang one of their most popular songs “Not Strong Enough,” off of the record. With their intense and melodic harmonies, the group lit up the SNL stage with their high energy and beautiful vocals. Each member took a turn singing, a staple in their music.

    Weekend Update with Michael Che and Colin Jost focused on the Presidential election, happening this time next year, and the usual satirical news stories they share. Heidi Gardner made an appearance as the overworked by not working at all coworker, someone all of us have definitely witnessed. The next sketch featured Timothée Chalamet as a humorous vision of Troye Sivan, the Grammy-nominated Internet personality turned popstar, with a shocking and funny twist of boygenius joining him.

    boygenius returned with their second song “Satanist,” also off their debut record. Heavier than their last one, with red hues to match the satanic subject matter and Bridgers screaming like she always does, the group left a chaotic impression on the stage. I mean, only they could write a lyric like “Solomon had a point when he wrote Ecclesiastes.”

  • John Leventhal Teases Upcoming Album “Rumble Strip” With Two Lyrical Singles

    John Leventhal will explore his newfound solo career with his upcoming album Rumble Strip to be released on January 26. The six-time Grammy-winner’s debut album will showcase some of the most adventurous work of his career. 

    Born in New York City, Leventhal began his career in the late 1970’s playing guitar in dozens of NYC area bands including those led by Billy Vera, Steve Forbert and Levon Helm. His impulse to look for unexpected moments of beauty has served as a compass and survival tactic throughout his remarkable career. He’s produced albums for Rosanne Cash, Marc Cohn, Sarah Jarosz, Jim Lauderdale, William Bell, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Joan Osborne and many others. As a guitar player, he has recorded and performed with Jackson Browne, Bruce Hornsby, Willie Nelson, The Tedeschi Trucks Band, Ry Cooder, Elvis Costello, Donald Fagen, and recently, The National (Leventhal co-produced the song “Crumble” from Laugh Track).

    Leventhal has been a Grammy winner in five consecutive decades, including as a co-writer and producer on Shawn Colvin’s 1998’s Song of the Year “Sunny Came Home,” Cash’s moody The River and the Thread, and Stax legend William Bell’s sublime 2016 album This Is Where I Live. Presently, he’s collaborating with Cash on a musical version of Norma Rae. His unique approach hasn’t always aligned Leventhal with whatever is reaping the biggest commercial rewards, but he figures that’s probably the only way he could’ve done it– and it worked.

    Leventhal has shared two songs from Rumble Strip: “That’s All I Know About Arkansas,” featuring vocals and lyrics by Rosanne Cash, his wife and collaborator of 30 years. The other is the solo guitar piece, “JL’s Hymn No. 2,” written and recorded in the same evening.

    “I’ve always had a catalog of ideas that have never found a home,” Leventhal says. “In the back of my mind, I thought that one of these days I should try to harvest some of those ideas and confront the personal gauntlet of making a solo record.” The COVID-19 pandemic made it inevitable. 

    That willingness to confront his past work pays off handsomely on Rumble Strip, which combines Leventhal’s distinctive, lyrical guitar work, full-band productions with and without vocals, solo guitar pieces that draw on Leventhal’s love for classical music and Anglican hymns, and humid blasts of Southern soul, country twang, and improvisation. 

    Rumble Strip will be out January 26 on RumbleStrip Records, the label co-founded by Leventhal and Rosanne Cash (distributed by Thirty Tigers).
