  • Black Rose Burning Drops Video For Title Track “Ad Astra”

NYC-based alt-rock group Black Rose Burning released “Ad Astra,” the title track from their brand new album alongside a sci-fi inspired official music video. Following singles, “Fight!”, “Night Terrors,” and “Sing to Me,” the group’s new album released in September, inspired by the Latin phrase “Ad Astra Per Aspera.”

Ad Astra by Black Rose Burning

“Ad Astra,” the new record’s title track, sports a sci-fi inspired video, featuring stylized digital graphics showing space travel and all things outer space. The song’s high energy matches well with the graphics, and showcases the group’s growing synergy. Inspired by the Latin phrase “Ad Astra Per Aspera,” meaning “through hardships to the stars,” the song carries themes of reaching beyond Earth towards the stars.

Sonically it’s a major leap forward in the ever-growing sound of Black Rose Burning in every way. Letting experts do what they do has resulted in – a lush soundscape that’s better than I could have ever hoped for. And even though I again wrote all the material, having partners who understand my vision is both invaluable and awe inspiring.

    George Grant

Formed in 2018, Black Rose Burning began with instrumentalist, producer, and engineer George Grant, joined by guitarist Frank Morin and drummer Luis Infantas. Ad Astra was recorded in Grant’s own studio, PV Recording Company, where the full band recorded the album alongside Grant’s production skills.

    Black Rose Burning

Black Rose Burning released their previous album, The Wheel, in December 2021. Since then, the group released three new singles, “Fight!”, “Night Terrors,” and “Sing to Me,” leading up to their third full length album, Ad Astra. The new album is available on streaming platforms, and available for purchase on BandCamp.

  • BABYMETAL & Dethklok Co-Headline The BABYKLOK Tour At Hammerstein Ballroom

Affectionately dubbed “The BABYKLOK Tour,” the infectious metal tandem of BABYMETAL and Dethklok descended upon the Hammerstein Ballroom this past Friday night (September 15) – a turn-of-the-century opera house located in Midtown Manhattan – for the twelfth stop on their 29-date trek across North America.

Providing opening support on this night, and for the entire tour, was 32-year-old guitar virtuoso Jason Richardson of Manassas, Virginia. Hours before the show, an eclectic recipe of fans lined West 34th Street in eager anticipation of the show, including anime girls in full costume, tattooed death metal fans, and conservative mothers and fathers with their teenage daughters.

The evening’s first co-headliner to appear on stage was Dethklok, both a virtual band featured in Adult Swim’s animated, dark comedy program Metalocalpse and a natural melodic death metal band created to perform in front of a live audience. The fictional members of the band, who were featured throughout the 16-song set in numerous dark and macabre animations on a huge monitor that functioned as the stage backdrop, include Nathan Explosion, Toki Wartooth, Pickles, Skwisgaar Skwigelf, and William Murderface.

The actual members of the band are comprised of Brendon Small (a co-creator of both bands along with Tommy Blacha), Gene Hoglan, Bryan Beller, and Mike Keneally. Also joining Dethklok in their live performances for this tour is Nili Brosh, an Israeli-American guitarist who has played with Steve Vai, DragonForce, and The Iron Maidens. Watch Dethklok perform “Bloodlines,” lifted from their 2009 studio album Dethalbum II, below:

Last to take the stage, but certainly not least, was the Japanese kawaii metal band (a musical fusion of heavy metal and J-Pop) known as BABYMETAL who are touring in support of their fourth album The Other One, a concept album released in March 2023. A trio of young women ranging in age from 20 to 25 years old, BABYMETAL formed in 2010 and is comprised of main vocalist Suzuka Nakamoto as “Su-metal,” Moa Kikuchi as “Moametal” and Momoko Okazaki as “Momometal” (the band’s latest addition).

With vocals backed by heavy metal instrumentation performed by a group of session musicians known as the “Kami Band,” BABYMETAL thrilled the sold-out 2,200-capacity crowd with a breathtaking routine filled with their own brand of non-stop, synchronized dancing, while at the same time willing their fans to harness raw, head-bang inducing energy. Watch BABYMETAL perform “PA PA YA!!,” taken from their 2019 studio album titled Metal Resistance Episode VII – Apocrypha – The Chosen Seven, below:

  • Alice Cooper & Rob Zombie: The Freaks Marched Into Jones Beach Theater For A Hellraising Parade

Dubbed the Gruesome Twosome when Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie toured together 13 years ago, the pair have reunited for their Freaks on Parade 2023 co-headlining tour that brought them to the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY this past Saturday, September 9, for another haunted hell ride. Joined by industrial pioneers Ministry and the eclectic alternative rockers Filter, these special guests have opened every show on the massive, 38-date trek of North America.

Alice Cooper | Photo Credit: Michael Dinger

Cooper, the 75-year old “Godfather of Shock Rock,” is promoting his 22nd solo album Road (earMusic), released last month. Bringing a signature style of macabre rock, Cooper’s stage show included a boa constrictor brandished across his shoulders and escaping from a straight jacket only to meet his maker guillotine-style at the hands of his wife Sheryl, in the gowned guise of Marie Antoinette. Cooper and his bandmates – “Hurricane” Nita Strauss (guitar), Tommy Henricksen (guitar), Chuck Garrick (bass) and Glen Sobel (drums) – offered up a set filled with classic tracks, including “I’m Eighteen” (the 1971 single that put him on the map), “Feed My Frankenstein,” “Poison,” and the closing number, “School’s Out.”

Rob Zombie | Photo Credit: Michael Dinger

An acclaimed cult horror filmmaker, Zombie is said to be turning his attention back to music and is currently working on his first new material since he dropped his seventh studio album, The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy (Nuclear Blast), back in 2021. Backed by Piggy D. (bass), Ginger Fish (drums) and Mike Riggs (who is back with the band after replacing guitarist John 5), Zombie delivered a theatrical, mind-blowing performance to the near 15,000-capacity crowd.

The stagecraft was impeccable, complete with pyrotechnics, a hovering flying saucer, large-scale puppetry and eye-popping, next-level videos displayed across numerous high-def screens. Zombie and company delivered a 14-song set (including an epic drum solo) comprised of notable hits like “House of 1000 Corpses” and “Living Dead Girl,” along with two covers by his former band White Zombie – “More Human Than Human” and “Thunder Kiss ’65.” The night concluded with Zombie’s most notorious anthem, “Dragula.”

  • GWAR Releases Final Recording feat. Oderus Urungus, “Tammy, The Swine Queen”

GWAR have released a 10th Anniversary Edition of Battle Maximus. fully remixed and remastered, this edition features the final recorded vocal performance of Oderus Urungus on the previously unreleased and never-before heard song “Tammy, The Swine Queen.”

    Tammy the swine queen

10 years have passed since the release of GWAR’s masterwork known as Battle Maximus, which served as a tribute to fallen Scumdog Warrior Flattus Maximus (AKA Corey Smoot) and was also the last album recorded with vocalist Oderus Urungus (AKA Dave Brockie) before he departed the planet Earth in 2014.

“Musically, ‘Battle Maximus’ is a great debut work by Pustulus Maximus, and lyrically, it is the final word of lead singer and band founder Oderus Urungus, The record is run through with the desperate, dangerous, and fully bananas imagination of Oderus. In fact, this re-release includes a song so nutty we named it twice, and then promptly forgot to put it on the record the first time around. ‘Tammy, Queen of Dirt,’ or, ‘Tammy the Swine Queen’ is the final performance of the maestro of mayhem, Oderus Urungus, and for our fans, it does not disappoint,”

  • NYC Goth Metal Band Nefariant Release “Beg” from Upcoming EP “Noct”

New York’s goth metal band Nefariant have released their new single “Beg” this August. The first single from their upcoming EP Noct scheduled to release on February 9th, 2024.

The band includes quartet members vocalist Jason Lekberg, pianist Paul Cibrano, bassist Daniel Martinez, and drummer Andrew Maciejewski. They’ve created a new expression of music they call ‘brutal elegance’ that allows metal to work without a guitarist. The band defines their music by using vocals, piano and bass elements to produce an intense and powerful genre of hard metal.

‘Beg’ begins with an instrumental build up that provokes the listeners as Lekberg emits strong and powerful vocals accompanied by the drums. Nefariant once again produces the sound of heavy metal with an array of growled vocals. Thematically darker and deeper with a progressive theme of self-realization and independence.

Nefariant has begun the release process for Noct by releasing one song a month, starting with “Beg”. In addition, the band has announced an upcoming show in Brooklyn on October 21st at The Meadows. Not only did they release just a new single but a music video as well, highlighting how the song adopts strong vocals, drums and invokes an emotional response that connects the fans to the band.

  • Jinjer Unleash Metal Mayhem in Niagara Falls

A night of metal mayhem engulfed the Rapids Theater in Niagara Falls on Friday, August 25th as the thunderous sounds of Jinjer and Until I Wake reverberated through the venue. This marked a historic moment for both bands. With a fervent crowd, it was a night that showcased the raw power of metal and the unifying force of music.

Local pride was on full display as Until I Wake, hailing from Buffalo, took the stage. This homecoming show held special significance for the band, and they made sure to make every second count. Despite a brief almost 30 minute set, they unleashed an explosive barrage of sound, captivating the audience with tracks like “Inside my Head,” “Still Sinking,” and their latest hit “Cold.” Alex Curtin’s thunderous drumming, August Geitner’s electrifying guitar work, Cody Jamison Johnson’s compelling vocals, and Ryan Ridley’s driving bass formed an unstoppable sonic assault. It’s clear that Until I Wake is a force to be reckoned with, and this performance was just a glimpse of their promising future as headliners.

As the anticipation reached its zenith, Jinjer, all the way from Donetsk, Ukraine, took command of the stage. This marked a monumental moment for the band as they graced the WNY area for the first time. Despite the distance from home, Jinjer’s energy was unwavering, fueled by the crowd’s enthusiastic reception. The setlist was a sonic journey through their repertoire, with hits like “Perennial”, “I Speak Astronomy” and a thunderous finale in “Sit Stay Roll Over.”

    Tetiana Shmailyuk- Vocals

Tetiana Shmailyuk, the commanding presence at the forefront, effortlessly switched between guttural growls and melodic harmonies, a testament to her vocal prowess and dynamic stage presence. Roman Ibramkhalilov’s guitar riffs cut through the air like a scythe, while Eugene Abdukhanov’s basslines resonated deep within the chest. Vladislav Ulasevich’s drumming served as the backbone of the performance, driving the music forward with unrelenting force and time shattering blast beats.

The band’s communication was concise but impactful, allowing the music to speak volumes. The crowd reciprocated the energy, creating a frenzy of mosh pits that pulsed in time with the music. Shmailyuk’s interactions with the audience demonstrated a deep connection, as if their souls were intertwined through the music.

The Rapids Theater felt alive that night, pulsating with the energy of metal enthusiasts who had waited eagerly for this experience. Jinjer’s performance was a testament to their growing stature in the metal scene, as evidenced by the near-capacity crowd that bore witness to their sonic onslaught.

As the night came to a close, it was evident that both Jinjer and Until I Wake had left an indelible mark on the Rapids Theater and the hearts of everyone present in Niagara Falls. The concert was a triumphant celebration of metal’s unifying power, and a harbinger of even greater things to come for both bands.
