  • Five Can’t-Miss Shows in Rochester This December

2023 was a lot of things, and hopefully one of those things, for you, was music-filled. Happy to be here to help guide you to some of the good stuff in and around Rochester every month. Here are five more shows to help you finish the year off with a bang.

December 6: Another Michael at Bug Jar

Philadelphia’s Another Michael returns to the Bug Jar after their killer show there last November. They come with their brand new album, Wishes to Fulfill, in tow, ready to delight fans new and old with their hooky songs featuring breezy guitars and dreamy vocals. JODI, Pluck, and Comfy round out this excellent bill.

Tickets are are $12/$15 dos and bands get started around 9pm.

December 7: Howard Levy 4 at Fanatics

Grammy-winning harmonica wizard Howard Levy, who long ago was an original member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, brings his new four piece to Fanatics. He and his signature diatonic harmonica playing are joined by Chris Siebold on guitar, Josh Ramos on bass and Luiz Ewerling on drums.

Tickets are $25 and the show starts at 7pm.

December 8: Mikaela Davis and Southern Star at Essex

Way back in January we recommended Mikaela Davis’ shows at Abilene and Maybird’s show at Bug Jar. Twelve months later and we’re back to recommend a show featuring them both on one bill at the brand new venue Essex. Mikaela Davis and Southern Star have since released a new album and have been touring heavily throughout the year. These two bands go way back too. Davis used to frequently play in Josh Netsky’s bands and Kurt Johnson, now a pedal steel and guitarist in Southern Star was a founding member of Maybird. Will they sit-in with each other? Only time will tell, but either way, this is sure to be a groovy psychedelic night featuring some of the areas brightest talents.

Tickets are $30 and the show starts at 7pm.

December 16: Ember at Bop Shop Records

Ember, the Brooklyn-based trio of Caleb Wheeler Curtis, Noah Garabedian, and Vinnie Sperrazza will close out what has been another busy and exciting year of eclectic live music at Bop Shop Records. Creative and band focused, they will push the limits of improvisation for a night of invigorating and heady night at the intimate shop in Brighton.

Tickets are $20 and the music gets going at 8pm.

December 31: moe. at Kodak Center

moe. will jam in the new year once again at the Kodak Center, returning after their blowout run at the same venue to welcome in 2019. The band is finishing out a solid year of touring after being plagued by more unfortunate health issues, with guitarist Chuck Garvey suffering a stroke in November 2021. Rochester is blessed with many excellent live music options to ring in the new year, but this one should top them all.

Tickets are $46-106 with an option to get a 2-night package. Show will start around 8p.

  • Five Can’t-Miss Shows In Syracuse This December

The holiday season is here, and there may be no greater gift to give your friends and family this season than tickets to a stunning concert. Here are five can’t-miss shows in Syracuse this December that you may want to consider.

December 1:  Sugar Hill Gang at Middle Ages Beer Hall

New Jersey hip-hop pioneers Sugar Hill Gang will kick off the month with a performance at Syracuse’s newest music venue, the Middle Ages Beer Hall.  Known for their smash hit “Rapper’s Delight” which was the first rap single to become a top 40 hit (1979), the band has served as the inspiration to countless acts over the last four decades.  In 2019, the group reunited to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the track, and have continued to tour intermittently since.

Doors open at 7pm with music starting at 8pm. Tickets are $35.

December 2:  Brand New Sin at The Westcott Theater

Central New York hard-rock fans won’t want to miss the reunion of Syracuse’s Brand New Sin on December 2 at The Westcott Theater.  The rockers, led by Joe Altier, last performed a reunion show in 2019.  Active from 2002-2012, the band performed at the 2007 Krockathon, and have opened for bands such as Black Label Society, Slash, Chris Cornell, Godsmack, and Type O Negative. The band saw commercial success in 2002 with the release of the single “My World” which was featured on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball.

Doors open at 7pm with music starting at 8pm. Tickets are $30.

December 8:  Mikaela Davis at Funk ’n Waffles

Rochester native and New York State favorite Mikaela Davis returns to Funk ’n Waffles for a show on December 8.  Davis will again be joined by her band, Southern Star.  The group recently wrapped up a successful tour in support of their album, And Southern Star, which saw the band open several shows for The Mountain Goats.  Davis, a classically trained harpist, weaves beautiful melodies which intertwine with her band’s Grateful Dead inspired roots.  A recent three-show residency in Syracuse saw the band play two sets each night; one set of Southern Star originals, and one set of Grateful Dead favorites.   The band continues to rise in popularity, and this is surely one you won’t want to miss. Maybird opens the show.

Doors open at 7pm with music starting at 8pm. Tickets are $22.

December 8:  Mountain Goats at Homer Center for the Arts

Coincidentally on the same night, Davis’ recent tour partners and indie-folk rockers The Mountain Goats perform an intimate concert at the Center for the Arts in Homer.  Originally the creation of singer-songwriter John Darnielle, he will be accompanied by a full band for this performance.  Known for high intensity live concerts which feature Darnielle’s clever and witty lyrics, the band frequently sells out whatever venue is in their path.  This performance at the Center for the Arts is no exception.

Doors open at 7pm with music starting at 8pm. Tickets are sold out.

December 13:  Lindsey Stirling at Landmark Theater

Those looking to get in to the holiday spirt won’t want to miss this one, as Lindsey Stirling returns to Central New York as part of her annual Snow Waltz Tour.   The violinist/dancer, whose performances are known for stunning choreography and theatrics, is embarking on what is now becoming an annual holiday celebration, which will see the violinist perform a wide variety of holiday favorites as well as tracks from her own Snow Waltz album.

Music starts at 8pm with tickets starting at $79.

  • Lukas Nelson + POTR Thanksgiving Eve at The Capitol Theatre

Lukas Nelson and The Promise of The Real brought their fall North American 2023 tour to the Capitol Theatre on November 22, 2023.  The band is currently touring in support of Sticks and Stones, their latest release.  This is their second appearance at the Capitol.

    Lukas Nelson + POTR
    Lukas Nelson + POTR

Nelson guided the POTR on a musical journey through peaks and valleys, exploring a range from soulful ballads to roots rock.  Notably, The Promise of The Real, with Lukas Nelson, served as the backing band for Neil Young from 2015 to 2019.  This baptism by fire equipped them with the experience needed to ascend to the status of a headlining band.

The members of POTR—Anthony LoGerfo (drums, percussion), Corey McCormick (bass guitar, vocals), Logan Metz (keyboards, lap steel, guitar, harmonica, vocals), and Tato Melgar (percussion)—collaborated with Nelson to create an atmosphere reminiscent of a local bar with friends, rather than the formality of a theater.

As Thanksgiving Eve unfolded, a sense of family permeated the night’s theme. Lukas Nelson paid tribute to his mother by dedicating ‘Icarus’ from the band’s newest recording to her.  In the middle of the show, the members of POTR stepped off the stage.  Nelson then took center stage, donning an acoustic guitar, and delivered a heartfelt rendition of Willie Nelson‘s ‘Angels Fly Too Close to the Ground.’  The performance left us questioning whether Lukas was honoring his father or undergoing a transformative moment right before our eyes.

    Ben Chapman
    Ben Chapman

Originating from Georgia and currently residing in Nashville, Ben Chapman kicked off the night. As a self-described ‘broke ass songwriter,’ he set the evening’s vibe.  Chapman’s honky-tonk flair had the audience tapping their feet throughout his set.  Adding a personal touch, he covered the Grateful Dead’s ‘Friend of the Devil,’ imprinting it with his unique style.

The tour continues through mid – December with a final show at the Maui Cultural Arts Center in Hawaii.

  • Spaghetti Eastern Music’s Sal Cataldi Returns With Two New Singles

Spaghetti Eastern Music is returning with two new singles that demonstrate the range of guitarist Sal Cataldi’s project, the acoustic vocal ballad “Sweet Home Anywhere” and a blues-inflected electric guitar instrumental “Jungle Blue.”

Critics from prestige outlets like The New York Times have heaped praise on Cataldi’s work since his debut album under the Spaghetti Eastern Music moniker, Sketches of Spam. This is a 16-track, 69-minute surf through a slew of contrasting moods, largely with guitar-driven instrumentals inspired by the acid funk of 70’s Miles, Krautrock, Ennio Morricone’s Spaghetti Western movie soundtracks and the icy sound of ECM Records guitar great Terje Rypdal. The disc’s acoustic titles included originals like “Wild One” and “Mama Called,” a cover of the Zappa instrumental rarity “Sleep Dirt” and a DADGAD-tuned, ballad paced reinvention of the Beatles’ “Ticket to Ride.”

In 2020, Cataldi followed his debut album with a trio of acclaimed atmospheric singles, “Her Lemon Peel Raincoat – Because It’s Raining,” “Peace Within” and “And This is Their New Hoax,” a COVID-19 musical editorial featuring samples of President Trump’s most noted denials to Cataldi’s soundpainting guitars and synths. In 2021, he released “Blues for A Lost Cosmonaut,” a much-praised nine-minute plus maxi single, again in the ambient mode and “Solo Guitar Score for 2x2x4.” The latter EP is the soundtrack for a dance piece recorded live at the Avant-Garde Arama Festival in Woodstock inspired by his work with the guitar orchestra of Rhys Chatham and his love of Fripp and “White Light, White Heat”-era Velvet Underground.

“He’s the hippie guitarist playing to another dimension.”

    John Swenson, Rolling Stone

In June 2020, Cataldi returned to the acoustic singer-songwriter mode with the single, “I Believe in Love,” which received significant critical praise and airplay, including promotion as song of the day by a NY artist, a “New York Slice” on WFUV-FM. In 2022, Spaghetti Eastern released three additional singles, the jazz and metal-infused instrumentals “A Fresh Kill,” “A Scanner Darkly,” and another delicate acoustic ballad, “I Believe In Love.”

Cataldi also made more beautiful sounds with “One Act Sonix,” the critically-buzzed about 2020 debut album from his spoken word/music side project, The Vapor Vespers, with noted Alaskan playwright/slam poet Mark Muro. The duo recently followed this up with two new singles in early 2022, “Sex” and “You Changed.” Cataldi is also one half of the improvisational and ambient Hudson Valley-based guitar and efx duo, Guitars A Go Go, with Rick Warren. Their first single, a 12-minute improv opus called “The Volcano Lovers,” was a preview of the bold experimentation featured in their recent CD debut, “Travel Advisory.”

“If Walt Disney World’s Space Mountain had a secret chill detour, Spaghetti Eastern Music would be the soundtrack.”

    NYSMusic

“Sweet Home Anywhere” is a delicate DADGAD-tuned ballad, indie-songcraft that highlights the artist’s pristine acoustic guitar work, close vocal harmony and emotional lyricism. It’s a song that tells a troubled former lover that, though they are no longer together, his door is always open.

“She’s sweet home anywhere// Good night baby, you can come back again, if you need a friend.”

Many have experienced breakups, but the worst are the ones where you have to breakup while still in love. This single perfectly voices this phenomenon. It can also be translated to friendships: when you are no longer friends with someone for one reason or another, but would always welcome them back with open arms.

Maybe it’s really about growth, and while growth is good– it can really sting.

“Jungle Blue” is a 360-departure from the above, an atmospheric electric instrumental driven by percussive cross-rhythms, dreamy washes of electronics and echoed pianos, a duo of sustained Ebow guitars and the guitarist’s always melodic, blues-inflected guitar runs. Cataldi calls it a cinematic marriage of new beats and electronic sounds with melodies and improvisation that harkens to the British blues boom of the ‘60s.

This song, completely unlike “Sweet Home Anywhere” has an almost alien feeling to it, as if it were from another universe or planet, and somehow made its way to Earth. It’s unsettling yet comforting. It should be in a spy movie, and yet, it should be the credit scene of a murder mystery.

“Jungle Blue” is a paradox itself– it’s beautiful and unsettling in all the right ways, and the only way to understand it is to listen.

Coming December 1, Spaghetti Eastern Music will release a trippy guitar solo “Health,” set for a short film by Kingston filmmaker/choreographer Hanna Bass. Her short film, “Fragments of Light,” is a tale of Bass’ cinematic journey, including her original career as a professional ballerina, and the transition from the ballet world to the realm of cinema.

Catch their monthly gigs at City Winery Hudson Valley starting on December 6, as well as a double gig live at The Falcon on December 15 with Teddy Kumpel and Nome Sane.

Stream Spaghetti Eastern Music on Spotify, Soundcloud, or Bandcamp.

  • Half Moon Run Headline Music Hall of Williamsburg

It’s been five months since Half Moon Run were in New York for their album release show on the Rooftop of the Live Nation headquarters. On Friday, November 17, they returned with the purpose of conquering Brooklyn, headlining The Music Hall of Williamsburg, along with support by Le Ren.

Fresh off a Tour of Europe that ended in October, this current tour started in the US in late October and will be running into their home country of Canada until the end of the year.

Half Moon Run hit the stage around 9pm to a very packed and crowded room. Music Hall of Williamsburg is a very small and intimate room, it allows for a great concert experience both in sound and lighting and overall atmosphere. The band got a massive Brooklyn cheer as they hit the stage and wasted no time by starting off the night with their hit song “You Can Let Go”. the Power Trio of Devon Portielje, Conner Molander, and Dylan Phillips captivated the audience with their skill of rotating instrument changes between them, all pretty much-playing everything on stage at one point or another in the show.

The energy at the show was great, the band leaned heavily on songs from the new release Salt as well as the debut album Dark Eyes. The highlight other than the very strong opening was the Encore which consisted of unforgettable performances of “Favourite Boy,” “Fire Escape,” and the finale “Full Circle” which is always amazing to see live.

Here’s hoping they come back to our area in 2024 and play a much bigger venue next time.

  • The Hold Steady 4 night residency at Brooklyn Bowl

A fine Brooklyn Bowl tradition, The Hold Steady will be returning with a four night residency at the famed venue from November 29 to December 2.

    The Hold Steady Brooklyn Bowl

The Hold Steady is a Brooklyn-based band that has performed in all 50 states and throughout Canada, Europe and Australia. A band upholding the values and integrity of indie and punk rock, The Hold Steady embrace rock classicism, fusing the bar band vigor of the Replacements with the epic-scale musical backdrops of Bruce Springsteen, while vocalist Craig Finn spilled out stories that were as impassioned as they were unpretentiously literate.

The Hold Steady have attracted a fervently dedicated following who embraced the beery, anthemic style of their debut album, 2004’s Almost Killed Me. They refined their music and lyrical stance while increasing their guitar on 2014’s ambitious Teeth Dreams, and they explored an alienated culture with near-operatic sweep on 2021’s Open Door Policy and 2023’s The Price of Progress.

And hey, did you know? Daniel Radcliffe himself has praised The Hold Steady as one of his favorite bands.

  • Hearing Aide: Moments Before…, LikeTheAstronaut

Four-piece group LikeTheAstronaut released their debut EP, titled Moments Before…. The EP explores electro-pop, folk, and alternative styles throughout the five unique tracks.

    Moments Before... by LikeTheAstronaut

The title track of the EP, “Moments Before…” includes key talents in the vocal effects, showcasing the band’s effective collaboration. In addition, it features heartfelt and melancholy lyrics, which add powerful emotion to the opening track.

“Slumber Still” evokes similarities from electronic synth pop, but with a slower beat and swaying melody. Not only does it have a catchy, droning backtrack, it shows promising room for more development in the synth production.

LikeTheAstronaut’s Moments Before… began with John Glenn, as a passion project following the passing of his father and the birth of his child. The collection explores the emotions coming with those events, through folk, electro-pop, and alternative musical influences.

    LikeTheAstronaut

LikeTheAstronaut formed in Albany, with the collaboration of Dave Parker (Stellar Young, Weerd Science, Coheed & Cambria), John Glenn (Stellar Young), Josh Eppard (Coheed & Cambria) and Kyle Hatch (Stellar Young). The musicians work together as a seamless group, forming a promising band with an upward trajectory.

  • Heaven Sent: Spiritualized Bring Bittersweet Beauty to Basilica Hudson

Crossing the train tracks that led up to the concert venue, a stranger stopped me and asked, “Is this the way Heaven?” “No,” I said. “Basilica Hudson.” While my Field of Dreams film reference was undoubtedly missed on the man, music fans could have sworn they were in heaven on Wednesday night, November 8th, when legendary UK space rockers Spiritualized made their spectacular debut in Hudson, NY. Delivering a spellbinding tour-de-force performance that will be remembered for years to come, it was the kind of show that cracked you open, rearranged your insides, and sent you home wanting to be a more productive person.

Making a rare stateside appearance with only six East Coast dates, fans from all over made it a priority to be there. The unique venue known as Basilica Hudson provided the perfect launching pad for such a formidable occasion.  Located in the industrial section of town, Basilica Hudson is actually an old, refurbished glue factory that was originally built in the 1880’s. Now a multi-purpose, energy efficient arts center along the city’s “South Bay” riverfront, many consider the spot to be a crown jewel of Hudson Valley concert halls. On this night it would also serve as our Space Station for the highly anticipated sold-out show that was presented by Chosen Family.

The Spaceman Cometh: Jason Pierce AKA J. Spaceman performing with Spiritualized on 11/8/23.

With the stage set against a starfield backdrop, things lifted off shortly after 8pm. The current Spiritualized juggernaut includes 9 band members spearheaded by our flight commander for the evening, Jason Pierce, better known by some as J. Spaceman. A revered songwriter with an almost cult-like following, it’s been no secret Pierce has been battling a number of health issues in recent years. Clinically pronounced dead twice at one point, indeed every show he plays these days is something of a miracle. Performing seated and wearing his trademark sunglasses, the veteran rocker who turns 58 this month, was showered with adoration and encouragement as the countdown to ignition finally commenced.

Spiritualized performed to a sold out crowd at Basilica Hudson on 11/8/2023.

Like most Spiritualized shows in recent years, “Hey Jane” was selected as the opening number. Blasting off with some infectious high-octane psych-rock, the tone was set for the transformative journey ahead. Sounding massive from the very start, “She Kissed Me (It Felt Like a Hit) kept the raw rock energy going as the room had now filled to capacity. Then hitting the rewind button and taking us back to where it all started, next was a song from the bands debut album, “Shine a Light,” from 1992’s Lazer Guided Melodies.  Making this one count, the momentum really started building here, as sprawling layers of sonic distortion and cascading crescendos reached a new level intensity, matching the equally intense, pulsating light show. And just when you thought you couldn’t take it anymore, our captain gently brought us back down, effortlessly guiding the band into the chilled-out hypnotic groove of “I’m Coming Home Again” that conjured up some heavy Velvet Underground vibes.

“If you want a rocket ship, I would be a rocket ship for you” – Lyrics from “Always Together With You”

A beautiful rendition of “A Perfect Miracle” proved to be an early highlight of the set, while “Always Together With You” took on an infectious astral-pop quality that saw Pierce’s lyrics playing up the bands outer space imagery.  Cloaked in white robes, the minimal 3-girl gospel choir sounded beautiful together, adding intricate layers of harmony and filling in the space with “ohhhs” and “ahhhs” that contributed a great deal to the overall sound. Up next came a trio of songs from the album many, including Pierce himself, thought might be the bands last; 2018’s And Nothing Hurt. Flowing beautifully from fan favorite “I’m Your Man” into the hard charging “The Morning After,” and then capping it off with “Here it Comes (The Road) Let’s Go,” which from my perspective, received some of the loudest cheers of the evening.

“Labored over these words too long and nothing to behold / Wanted it to be special for you, but it’s just a song” – Jason Pierce

The next portion of the night featured material from Spiritualized’s most recent release Everything Was Beautiful. Starting the sequence off with “Best Thing You Never Had (The D Song),” things got a little weird when suddenly a man jumped over the barricade and onto the stage. Basking in the spotlight for a moment, it was unclear if this was part of the act.  As the band played on with perplexed looks of plausible concern, it soon became obvious that it was just some inebriated dude looking for attention.  Then attempting to stage dive his way out of the awkward situation, fans in the front made zero attempt to catch him.  The resulting splat that followed was amusing to some, but a complete mental distraction for others. To their credit, Spiritualized never missed a single note. If nothing else, the incident seemed to be an ice breaker, for as serious as this performance was, fans realized it was okay to let their hair down a bit as it was still a rock n’ roll show.

Idiot bastard, son of a gun
Heaven is easy, your living is done
Take it down easy, won’t know what you’ve done
    And we’re gone.

-Lyrics from The A Song (Laid in Your Arms)

Resetting the coordinates now, the deliberately hypnotic buildup of “Let It Bleed (For Iggy) produced massive moments of introspection and then euphoria, while the hard charging angst of “The A Song (Laid in Your Arms)” furthered the momentum into another deafening climax where Pierce seemingly confronts his demons while pondering over his lasting legacy. Looking even deeper within, Pierce confessed he’s “Damaged” while lamenting the lines “I wanna just close my mind / Feel like I’m floating on a ship out of time.” Soaring forward with cathartic, blissed-out beauty,  “Soul on Fire” achieved an almost orchestral peak, despite there being no string or horn section.  While the crowd sang along to its repeating chorus, the magnitude of the moment was enough to make the hair on your neck stand up. Acknowledging his struggles with addiction once more, “Sail on Through” would bring the main portion of the show to a jaw-dropping close.

Spiritualized performing in Hudson, NY on 11/8/23.

So long you pretty thing, God save your little soul
The music that you played so hard ain’t on your radio
And all your dreams and diamond rings and all that rock and roll can bring you
    Sail on, so long.

    -Jason Pierce

After a few moments of silence off stage, Spiritualized would sail on with a passionate rendition of their psychedelic space pop manifesto “So Long You Pretty Thing.” The final song of the night was also the loudest.  Encoring with the lone track from the bands 1997 undisputed masterpiece Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating in Space, “Come Together” nearly blew the roof of Basilica Hudson and put an emphatic stamp on a life-affirming performance that simply shook the audience to the core.  Standing up and facing them for the first time all night, Pierce would humbly take a bow and gracefully exit to a chorus of both cheers and tears. Mesmerizing and beautiful, heart wrenching, vulnerable and honest, it was the rare type of performance that satisfied all of your senses and filled you with hope. The type of show that made you feel lucky to be alive and grateful for the struggle. A little piece of Heaven right there there in Hudson, NY.
