  • In Focus: Counting Crows Bring Banshee Season Tour to Canandaigua

    It was a night to celebrate 90s rock music on Sunday, as Counting Crows brought their Banshee Season Tour to CMAC on Sunday, July 2nd. The concert featured direct support from Dashboard Confessional.  

    It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years since Counting Crows burst onto the music scene, releasing their multi-platinum debut album August and Everything After in 1993.  The California natives have gone on to release seven more studio albums, along with numerous live albums. 

    Fronted by Adam Duritz (vocals), the band also features David Bryson (guitar), Charlie Gillingham (keyboards), Dan Vickery (guitar, pedal steel), David Immergluck (guitars), Jim Bogios (drugs) and Millard Powers (bass guitar).   The band is touring in support of their latest release, Butter Miracle Suite One (2021).

    Heavy showers swept across the concert facility minutes before gates opened on Sunday evening.  This did not deter a passionate fan base from arriving early to take in opener Dashboard Confessional.  Originally the solo-acoustic project of Chris Carrabba, it would morph into a full band in 2002, as Carrabba was asked to perform on MTV Unplugged. The added bandmates allowed Carrabba’s songwriting to take on new depths and sounds. 

    Just after 7:30, Carrabba and his band mates took to the stage, and were met with a heavy cheer from the audience. The band launched into the upbeat “Don’t Wait”, which delivered a call and echo vocals, to with the audience enthusiastically obliged. From there the band would perform “The Sharp Hint of New Tears”, a song from Carrabba’s 2000 debut release (with lyrics that showcase the origin of the band’s name). Once known for writing acoustic emo rock, with themes centering around heartbeat and loss, Carrabba and his mates delivered a 60 minute set, spanning the band’s twenty year catalog and was filled with songs of hope and self-triumph. The band would close out their set with perhaps their biggest hit, the high energy “Hands Down”, which saw his band mates jumping and leaping around the stage.

    As the 9pm hour approached, a pedal steel guitar was wheeled to stage left. Moments later, the house lights would dim and Duritz and his bandmates took to the stage. A lone spotlight illuminated guitarist Dan Vickery as he began to pluck the hauntingly familiar guitar riff to “Round Here”, one of the band’s most well known songs. Additional lights would slowly illuminate the remaining members of the band as Duritz moved to the center of the stage to start delivering his poetic lyrics, at times acting out key moments in the song. As the song built on energy and emotion, the audience became engaged, belting out lyrics. The band continued to build on the energy and emotion, following up with the upbeat “Hard Candy” and then the familiar “Mr. Jones”.

    While the band’s set would lean heavily on music from their early years, Duritz didn’t hide his excitement when they would perform tracks of the band’s latest two releases. Tracks like “God of Ocean Tides” and “The Tall Grass” hit home with the audience as well as the band’s early hits. The later portion of the band’s set saw them perform their latest release Butter Miracle Suite One in entirety. They would conclude the main set with the familiar classic “Long December” which saw the grounds illuminate with cell phone lights and erupted into an audience sing along.

    Crowd pleas for an encore would be obliged by the band, as they would return to the stage and deliver a four song encore. Returning to the stage with “Time and Time Again,” a beautiful track of their debut release, Duritz’s voice proved to be strong as ever, as the chorus echoed through out the center. Chris Carrabba and his band would join the Counting Crows for the next piece of the encore, Dashboard Confessional’s 2006 hit “So Long, So Long” which saw Duritz provide a guest vocal appearance on the studio recording. Carrabba would return the vocal favor on the next song, trading lyrics with Duritz on the hit “Hangin’ Around”. Fans flocked to the aisles to sing and dance along, as Carrabba and Duritz bounced around the stage, singing and triumphantly trading high-fives with fans.

  • In Focus: Dave Matthews Band Amuses at Darien Lake

    On June 14th, Dave Matthews Band took the stage at Darien Lake, delivering an electrifying performance that left the crowd buzzing.

    From the energetic opener “When the World Ends” to the soulful encore of “You Never Know” and “Shake Me Like a Monkey,” the band captivated the audience with their musical prowess and heartfelt lyrics. One of the highlights of the night was a fantastic version of “Don’t Drink the Water.” The song featured a weird and exploratory intro, which sounded similar to something you’d hear at a Phish show. As the venue is close a Native American reservation, the song about the slaughter and colonization of the Native Americans was extremely poignant.

    As it often is, “Lie In Our Graves” was the standout of the night. Probably the longest song of the night, they stretched out the classic and the Darien Lake crowd loved it. The night was heavy with new songs from their recently released album, 2023’s Walk on the Moon, but it was also sprinkled with some deeper cuts to keep everyone happy.

    From the infectious energy of their opening song to the soul-stirring encore, the band showcased their exceptional musicianship and their ability to create an unforgettable live experience.

  • In Focus: Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad at Ithaca Reggae Festival 2023

    Ithaca Reggae Festival 2023 took over Stewart Park this over June 23-24, bringing some roots and rhymes to local reggae fans. Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad closed the festival off Saturday evening playing some favorites.

    For five years now the Ithaca Reggae Festival has been drawing crowds to the Finger Lakes Region. This years line up included Sundub, New Planets, Scientist, Double Tiger, and the Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad. With great food, arts, and activities for youth and adults, the reggae festival helps build community and keeps the music alive.

    Rochester Reggae and Jam band Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad finished the festival off Saturday night with high energy felt from both the crowd and the band. Founded in 2001, the band is well known for their reggae roots and dub sounds. Performing old and new songs from their latest release, Love In Time, the crowd was left wanting more.

  • Wallice Returns to Rock Bowery Ballroom

    Wallice, the rising indie-pop sensation, graced the stage at Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan on June 27th, captivating the crowd with her infectious melodies and magnetic presence. This performance marked her triumphant return to NYC (and Bowery Ballroom) after her opening act with JAWNY last March.

    With her irresistible charm and undeniable talent, Wallice delivered a performance that was nothing short of electric. Sharing the spotlight was the indie rock boy band Nitefire, whose infectious energy and captivating melodies set the perfect tone for the evening.

    As the lights dimmed and the first chords resonated through the venue, it was evident that this would be a night to remember. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as fans eagerly embraced the fusion of Wallice’s honest lyrics, vulnerability, and witty storytelling.     Nitefire,the dynamic musical project of Nico Geyer and Luke White, boldly defines themselves as the “budget Wallows.” Blending the pop sensibilities of turn-of-the-century indie rock with the vibrant sonics and youthful spirit of Brit-pop, Nitefire fearlessly carves out a lane that is uniquely their own, leaving nostalgia behind. With their roots embedded in the thriving Los Angeles music scene, the band has gained recognition for their DIY approach, hosting their own events and shows that embrace an “if you build it, they will come” mentality, diverging from the digital-dominated landscape of today. Nitefire’s sound and attitude are entirely their own as they carve out a distinct lane. With their debut single “Up 2 U” released, the band has already amassed an impressive following and garnered over 40K monthly listeners on Spotify. Nitefire’s journey has only just begun, and their upcoming releases and live performances promise an exciting and vibrant future for the band.

    Nitefire’s opening performance was an electrifying display of energy and connection. Despite a minor setback earlier in the day, with Luke breaking his pinky, the band turned it into a playful guessing game during their set. Nico, the charismatic frontman, challenged the crowd to speculate on the cause of Luke’s injury, teasing them with the statement, “You’ll literally never guess.” Hilarious suggestions of door-related incidents were quickly debunked, fueling the curiosity of the fans. To their surprise, it was revealed that the pinky was actually broken in a Frisbee accident, leaving many scratching their heads and engaging in animated discussions.

    Nico’s crowd interaction was a highlight, as he jumped into the crowd multiple times with guitar and mic in hand, creating a central pit of excitement. One fan attempted to converse with Nico in French, only to be misheard, prompting Nico to ask if she was speaking Spanish instead. The lighthearted exchange drew laughter and further showcased the band’s down-to-earth and approachable nature. The finale saw Nico leaning back into the crowd, crowd surfing during the last song, “Saturday.” Nitefire’s performance was a thrilling and engaging experience, leaving fans captivated by their boundless energy and genuine connection.

  • MIDNIGHTCHOIR Shares “Lovecrimes” Single + Video

    NYC electronic act MIDNIGHTCHOIR has just released the single “Lovecrimes,” along with this, a music video to accompany it. Along with this, they have also confirmed the forthcoming release of their second album, Loverboy Molotov, to be released July 14th

    New York-born and raised electronic producer Patrick Bobilin has been producing music as MIDNIGHTCHOIR since 2014. Bobilin’s love for 80s goth rock and pounding electronic beats combined with his political experiences color the tone and tenor of his music. 

    Speaking on this new single, Bobilin wrote, “After 7 years of being in the public eye, the only times I felt I could be myself were at NYC dance bars like Pyramid Club or Saint Vitus. I started traveling to Austin, TX more often to visit a group of friends, free from the political infamy I’d become ensnared in.”

    “I recorded it quickly in one night, with the urgency of having to get out of town and shake loose of those tangles. ‘Lovecrimes’ was inspired by late nights in NYC and dancing at Barbarella in Austin, where they always play INXS on 80’s Night. The cover of ‘Need You Tonight’ was also inspired by those late nights and features guitar from David Simutis who I met at an office job and who I learned was a seasoned indie rock vet, having engineered and played on some of the coolest records of the last 20 years.” 

    The combinations of sex, politics, and gothic imagery explain the lyrical content and the inclusion of three covers: Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” INXS’ “Need You Tonight,” and “Personal Jesus” by Depeche Mode. 

    Since then, Bobilin ran for public office, led community action organizations during the 2020 social justice uprisings, and has been an active community organizer. He was even arrested twice during the 2020 movement for black lives while organizing protests. That social justice work, which had Bobilin arguing with former-mayor de Blasio about policing on live radio, has found its way into the lyrics of the punk-infused new darkwave album he recorded in the first few weeks of 2023. 

    The new album was made with much of Bobilin’s urgency and energy of his political campaigns in 2017, 2020, and 2022. Having firmly decided to leave politics behind, Bobilin was compelled to write about many of the frustrations that inspired his far-left politics.  

    While Bobilin may lean on 80’s new wave and goth influences, the autobiographical elements of the album reflect his experiences in politics and protest. The politics of the album are far left, with emotional, social, religious, and political concerns peppered throughout.

  • Remain in Light Tour Brings Talking Heads Classics to Capitol Theatre

    Original members of Talking Heads, Jerry Harrison & Adrian Belew, along with Cool Cool Cool played an incredible show at the Capitol Theatre on Sunday, June 25, filled with Talking Heads favorites on a tour highlighting Remain in Light. Cool Cool Cool performed a set of original music before accompanying Jerry & Adrian for a set of Talking Heads songs.

    Cool Cool Cool started the night off with some original songs which proved to be tight and groovy. Leading the way on vocals were Shira Elias & Sammi Garett, who provided a very upbeat and fun feel. They had great stage presence and crowd control. Notably this horns section is always incredibly tight and spectacular, it consists of Chris Brouwers, Greg Sanderson, & Josh Schwartz who also took lead vocals on a few songs.

    The band opened up with “Psycho Killer” which sent the place dancing. The set included fan favorites such as “Crosseyed & Painless,” “Cities,” “Once in a Lifetime,” and concluded with “Take Me To The River.” The show was high energy filled with masterful musicianship and highly psychedelic peaks in true Talking Heads Style.

    The audience applauded, begging for more. The band returned to play an incredible encore which included “Drugs” & “The Great Curve.” This was the last stop of an lengthy tour which spanned many “Cities” and was truly “Once in a Lifetime”.

  • In Focus: The Flaming Lips Bring Yoshimi to Cleveland

    The Flaming Lips delivered an unforgettable performance at the Agora Theatre in Cleveland on June 11. With two mesmerizing sets, they took the audience on a journey filled with nostalgia, energy, and musical brilliance. Wayne Coyne serves as the bands psychedelic ringmaster, constantly pulling things out of his bag of tricks or egging the crowd on to be as silly and to have as much fun as possible. The Flaming Lips treat every concert like it’s the last one on Earth, because you never know, it could be.

    In their first set of the night, The Flaming Lips paid homage to their iconic album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by performing it in its entirety. The crowd was immersed in a sonic adventure, as the band flawlessly captured the essence of the album’s whimsical melodies and thought-provoking lyrics. Accompanied by mesmerizing visuals, their performance breathed new life into the beloved tracks, evoking a wave of both nostalgia and renewed appreciation.

    As the night drew to a close, The Flaming Lips left the stage, but their impact lingered in the hearts and minds of everyone present. Their two-set performance was a testament to their artistic vision, their ability to captivate and transcend boundaries, and their unwavering commitment to creating a transformative live experience. The Flaming Lips once again solidified their status as masters of their craft, leaving the audience with an insatiable craving for more of their musical magic.

    In the first half of the song, ODowd’s tight snare roll rushes the listener into Fern Puma’s poshly-distorted bass. Seconds later, Christian Cruz’s barbed guitar cuts in like a hot knife. Soon after, vocalist Anthony Diaz chimes in with his declamatory lyrics and it’s apparent that Scorpion Tea is a special blend of death rock intoxication. The song’s construction proves to be the perfect introduction to the new hot and upcoming band.

    The band stated, “During our time in LA, recording the album, Edley introduced us to the whimsical, yet dead serious routines of the legendary choreographer Bob Fosse.” explains the video’s director, Scorpion Tea vocalist Anthony Diaz. The music video explores what happens when a single baleful missive causes one’s entire understanding to unravel.  

    Diaz continues, talking about the dark aesthetic of Fosse’s work that resonated with the band, “The dancers in the piece seemed mesmerized, their strings pulled by an unseen force. I wanted to incorporate this idea with the hypnotic quality and longing breathlessness of ‘Scarlet Misquote,’ while still drawing on Scorpion Tea’s style of brightside-facing hilarity.”

  • Stalking Gia Releases New Alt-Pop Single “Euphoria” 

    NYC-based alt pop singer/songwriter Stalking Gia has just released her newest hit single titled “Euphoria.” The song materializes aspects of art between online fantasy and Manhattan’s real-life nocturnal glow.

    Gia writes, the song is “about the desire to find a deeper connection with someone and the fear of losing them.  The lyrics describe the struggle to break free from the monotony of everyday life and the search for something more…. A longing to escape the mundanity of their current situation and reach a new level of intimacy.” 

    At age 5, Gia had her first dose of the limelight when she starred as the child lead in one of Cheerios most globally successful commercials. She was a professional Broadway actor (alongside her friend, Nick Jonas) and Top 5 Disney Radio artist with songs featured in the movie “Another Cinderella Story” starring Selena Gomez. She then lent her voice to Popstar Barbie in the 2012 animated movie Barbie: The Princess and the Popstar, which was produced by Universal Studios and premiered on Nickelodeon.  

    As an independent artist in 2016, she released her debut single “Second Nature,” kickstarting her viral fame and gaining her over 13.2 million streams on Spotify. It was later sampled on the single “Wish U The Best” by Blackbear, an A-List Top 40 recording artist with 20 million Spotify monthly listeners. The two artists would later tour together and collaborate for their track “Miracles” which has earned over 4.9 million streams. 

    Last summer, she teased a demo on TikTok using the famous nursery rhyme “Oh My Darling Clementine.” It gained traction and after getting a positive response she went on to release a full version titled “saddest happy girl.” 

    From co-writing with other artists for their projects to creating her own “no rules” music, Stalking Gia is a sought-after name in the game; bicoastal between New York City and the music scene of Los Angeles. Since then, she has returned to releasing music independently and continues to gain a loyal fan base.
