  • SNL Alum Jane Curtin Comes to UAlbany in April

Actor and comedian Jane Curtin, one of the original cast members on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” plans to make a visit to the University at Albany on Saturday, April 29 with two distinct events in store.

    jane curtin

At 4pm, Curtin, a two-time Emmy Award winner for Kate & Allie, will participate in an on-stage interview with WAMC’s Joe Donahue as part of The Creative Life: A Conversation Series. This event is free and open to the public.

Then, later that day at 7:30pm, Jane Curtin will be a part of the cast of Selected Shorts, the live version of the weekly public radio show that airs locally on WAMC Northeast Public Radio.  Tickets purchased in advance are $10-$15. Both appearances will take place at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the uptown University at Albany campus at 1400 Washington Avenue.

Starting in its first season in 1975, Jane Curtin was one of the original “Not Ready for Prime Time Players” on “Saturday Night Live” and stayed with the show through the 1979-80 season. She later starred in two long-running television sitcoms, “Kate & Allie” from 1984 through 1989, during which she won back-to-back Emmy Awards in 1984 and 1985, and “3rd Rock from the Sun” from 1996 through 2001. Curtin also starred in all four seasons of “Unforgettable” as well as the television movie series “The Librarian” and its spin-off television show, “The Librarians.” Guest appearances have included“The Good Wife,” “48 Hours ’til Monday,” “The Good Fight,” “Broad City,” “United We Fall” and, most recently, “The Conners.”

Jane Curtin has appeared on Broadway in “Noises Off,” “Candida,” and “Our Town.” Her film credits include “Coneheads,” “Antz,”” I Love You, Man,” “I Don’t Know How She Does It,” “The Heat,” “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,”  “Ode to Joy,” “Godmothered,” and “Queen Bees.” Upcoming projects include the film “Jules,” opposite Sir Ben Kingsley.

The Creative Life series is a major arts initiative of the University Art Museum, New York State Writers Institute and UAlbany Performing Arts Center in conjunction with WAMC Northeast Public Radio. Sponsored by The University at Albany Foundation, the series features live onstage interviews conducted by WAMC’s “Roundtable” host Joe Donahue with artists of national and international prominence in conversation about their creative inspiration, their craft, their careers and the demands of sustaining an artistic practice over time. A question-and-answer period closes each program.

Previous Creative Life guests include fiction writer Joyce Carol Oates, tap dancer-choreographer Savion Glover, jazz violinist Regina Carter, painter David Salle, Young Adult author Lois Lowry, choreographer Garth Fagan, Broadway star Patti LuPone, Warhol film star Bibbe Hansen, sculptor Jean Shin, author/essayist Esmeralda Santiago, New Yorker journalist/author Susan Orlean, comedian/actor Paul Reiser, high-wire artist Philippe Petit, rapper Rakim, novelist Jhumpa Lahiri, chef/food writer Ruth Reichl, designer Debbie Millman, writer Roxane Gay, and art critic Lucy Sante.

Over thirty-five years ago, Selected Shorts was born on the stage at Symphony Space in New York City and quickly became one of the best-known shows of its kind spawning a popular public radio show, podcast, audio collections, and national tours. The series was conceived with a simple premise: take great stories by well-known and emerging writers and have them brought to life by terrific actors of stage and screen. The show is now broadcast on more than 150 stations to about 300,000 listeners around the country. The Selected Shorts podcast consistently ranks as one of the most popular podcasts on iTunes, with more than 100,000 downloads each week. Selected Shorts on Tour takes the show live to theaters, libraries, college campuses and conferences.

This is the third Selected Shorts performance at UAlbany.  Previous guests who have performed on stage at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center have included Jane Kaczmarek (“Malcolm in the Middle”), Anthony Rapp (original cast of “Rent”), Alysia Reiner (“Orange is the New Black”), Patricia Kalember (“The Tick”), Bhavesh Patel (“The Good Wife”) and Rita Wolf (Tony Kushner’s “Homebody/Kabul”).  The two actors joining Curtin for the April 29 performance are still to be announced.

Tickets for the live performance of Selected Shorts are available through the UAlbany Performing Arts Center’s web site at www.albany.edu/pac.  The show is presented by the New York State Writers Institute and the UAlbany Performing Arts Center with support from the University at Albany Foundation and University Auxiliary Services.

  • Garcia’s to Celebrate the Life of Music Legend Michael Winters with Tribute Concert

On April 16, Garcia’s in Port Chester will celebrate the life of music legend, Michael Winters with a tribute concert.

    Michael Winters

Winters, the former Operations & House Manager of The Capitol Theatre and a crucial figure of the New York live music scene, passed away 5 years ago on July 1, 2018. To commemorate his life and legacy, this tribute concert will be held on Sunday, April 16 at 4:20PM, on a day before what would have been his 57th birthday.

Friends and staff of The Capitol Theatre have organized the event to celebrate the life of Mike rather than his departure. Mike, who was often referred to as “the heart and soul of The Cap,” had an invaluable impact on the theater, where he is credited with helping to name the lobby bar Garcia’s, before retiring after five years. Before his time at The Capitol Theatre, Mike and his brother, Brad, were partners in Manny’s Car Wash, a renowned blues club in Manhattan.

Mike’s love for music began at the age of 12 when his brother and sister took him to see Frank Zappa on Halloween. His passion for music continued to be fueled by bands like the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band. The tribute concert, named “With the Gold of Sunshine” after his favorite Grateful Dead song, “Ripple,” will feature performances by local Grateful Dead-inspired bands Grateful BRO and Dead Meat. The proceeds from the event will be donated to Songcatchers, a charity dedicated to fostering the next generation of music fans by providing affordable music education.

Songcatchers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has provided accessible, affordable, and high-quality music education and experiences to children and families for over 40 years. Programs bring music into children’s lives, fostering a lifelong appreciation of the arts. Leadership development is a hallmark of all Songcatchers programs; youth serve as aides, instructors and counselors, and are mentored by professional musicians and music educators. The goal of “Reaching for Peace Through Music” is realized with the belief that all children deserve the chance to learn music and to see the beauty of each other through the arts.

“When Mike worked at the Cap, everyone was so kind, they were a tight knit crew and became the original Capitol Family. After his passing, they have continued to make me feel like part of the Cap Fam.” said his wife, Lara Winters. “It truly means the world to me that he had such a positive impact on the many he touched and that his memory will be honored with love in a meaningful way.”

Join friends, staff and family for an evening of music, friendship, and giving back to the music community as we celebrate the life of Michael Winters. The event will also feature a charity auction and raffle including a collection of music memorabilia. Friends are encouraged to bring a photograph of Mike for the memorial display board.

Tickets can be purchased online here.

  • In Focus: First ever Wallenberg Festival brings Binghamton Orchestras Together

On Saturday, January 28, the Binghamton Philharmonic celebrated its first “Wallenberg Festival,” a concert of Binghamton’s three orchestras: the Binghamton Community Orchestra (Evan Mecarello, dir.), the Binghamton Youth Symphony (Barry Peters), and the Binghamton Philharmonic (Daniel Hege).

    first wallenberg festival

The program was named after Fritz and Marianne Wallenberg, the founders of the Binghamton Symphony in 1955. In his remarks to the audience, Executive Director Paul Cienniwa explained that, while the Wallenbergs did not directly create today’s three orchestras, they were instrumental in sparking substantial interest within a relatively small community.

Each orchestra performed a short set of familiar works. Many of the crowd-pleasers, from von Suppè’s Poet and Peasant to a Brahms Hungarian Dance, are not heard too often these days, and these works were an excellent introduction to the orchestra for many of the concert’s young attendees. “Wallenberg Festival” concluded with a side-by-side performance of the Youth Symphony and the Philharmonic, first playing Rimsky-Korsakov’s Procession of the Nobles under Peters, and then Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slave under Hege.

As expected in a concert of one professional and two amateur orchestras, the playing was mixed. The enthusiasm was not, however–especially during the side-by-side. Even more so, the large audience showed again and again its love for Binghamton and its uncommon tradition.

Coming up this month, on Thursday, February 16 at 6:00 pm, the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra will present its 8th Annual Mac & Cheese Fest Fundraiser at the Holiday Inn Downtown in Binghamton. Guests should get ready for some cheesy goodness at this all-you-can-eat Mac & Cheese event featuring over sixteen local restaurants. Local chefs will compete for best Mac & Cheese while host Chelsea Cheddar (the Mayor of Macaroni) presides with cheesy proclamations as musicians of the Philharmonic play lively fanfares. Patrons and celebrity judges will determine which restaurant wins the Best Mac & Cheese title for 2023, along with other culinary awards. Tickets are just $25 to support the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra. For tickets and more information, contact the Binghamton Philharmonic box office at 607-723-3931 or visit www.bingmacfest.com.

He will make a stop in Saratoga Springs at SPAC in August with Lainey Wilson and The Red Clay Strays.

Eric Church’s most recent critically acclaimed and chart-topping project, his Heart & Soul triple album, is the result of a marathon session during which he spent nearly a month writing and recording a song per day while sequestered in rural North Carolina. The album features his latest Gold-certified No. 1 “Hell of a View” and recent Top 5 hit “Heart On Fire” as well as his latest single, “Doing Life With Me.”

Joining “The Chief” across varying dates are Whiskey Myers, Cody Jinks, Jelly Roll, Ashley McBryde, Koe Wetzel, Lainey Wilson, Midland, Parker McCollum, Travis Tritt, Elle King and Paul Cauthen, plus Jackson Dean, Morgan Wade, Muscadine Bloodline, Shane Smith & The Saints, Hailey Whitters, Ray Wylie Hubbard and The Red Clay Strays.

Other newly added dates include Charleston, SC, Toronto, ON Rogers, AR, Orange Beach, AL, George, WA, Atlanta, GA, and Charlotte, NC.

Well, we have never done an outdoor summer tour. Never headlined amphitheaters. Never brought a summer experience to your town that featured artists we want to share the summer with. Until now. See you in the season of sunshine with some fellow outsiders that shine brightest when the sun goes down.

  • Brooks & Dunn Bring ‘Reboot Tour’ to KeyBank Center in May

Brooks & Dunn, the best-selling duo of all time, have announced their 2023 return to arenas with the 2023 REBOOT Tour stopping at 17 cities, including Buffalo at KeyBank Center on Saturday, May 13. The duo will be joined by opener Scott McCreery.

    brooks and dunn reboot tour

With 20 Number 1 hits stretching back to 1991, as well as two GRAMMY awards, dozens of ACM and CMA honors and a discography counting more album sales than any duo in any genre in history, Brooks & Dunn’s influence on today’s country has never been in question.

Hits like “Boot Scootin’ Boogie,” “My Maria” and “Believe” have propelled the duo to more than 30 million albums sold, with the New York Times heralding “together they helped drive the power-country era of the early-to-mid 1990s and continued to benefit from the sea change in the genre they helped initiate right through their most recent albums.” Their original “Merle Haggard meets The Rolling Stones” vibe made them progressive stars in their own right. The duo’s recently released collaboration project REBOOT debuted at No. One on Billboard’s Top Country Albums. The impressive feat marks the first time the duo has topped the album charts since 2009 while simultaneously earning the duo their 10th Billboard 200 Top 10 album, the most of any country duo or group in the chart’s history.

In 2019 the duo was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in the “Modern Era Artist” category. In 2021 Brooks & Dunn undertook their first nationwide tour in ten years with their anticipated The REBOOT 2021 TOUR, as well as wrapped their hugely successful and the longest-running country residency in Las Vegas, “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Vegas.”

“Last year, you all reminded us just how much fun it is to walk out on that stage and share the night with ya! We love what we do, but we’re just surfing your wave …can’t wait!!” said Kix Brooks. “The Brooks and Dunn posse rides again,” said Ronnie Dunn. “More excited to hit the big stage as we ever have been! Unbelievable band of friends.…annnnnd YOU! Together, let’s rock the house!!”

After achieving five consecutive No. 1 hits during the last few years, Scotty McCreery is currently rising up the country charts with his single “It Matters to Her,” which he wrote with Rhett Akins and Lee Thomas Miller. The song can be found on his current project Same Truck: The Deluxe Album, which also features his three week No.1 hit “Damn Strait” as well as his No.1 hit “You Time” (both RIAA Gold-certified).

Opener Scott McCreery says “Having been a huge fan of their music all my life, going out on the road with Kix and Ronnie is a dream come true for me. I can’t wait for this tour to begin!”
