  • Dead and Company to Auction Custom Signed Guitars for Charity on Final Tour

The final Dead & Company tour, stopping in Saratoga Springs on June 17-18 and Citi Field June 21-22. will include a traveling charity auction featuring ten one-of-a-kind D’Angelico guitars designed by contemporary rock music artist AJ Masthay.

Each guitar features designs using images from Masthay’s Dead & Company poster art, creating an anthology of his work with the band, dating back to 2016

dead and company final tour guitars for charity

The auction is part of the “Participation Row” activism village organized by HeadCount, a non-profit organization that promotes voter registration and civic participation, along with REVERB, which promotes environmental responsibility. Since 2015, Participation Row has raised more than $2.8 million dollars for nearly two dozen “Dead Family” charities through auctions and activity at over 180 concerts. Participation Row’s impact also includes over 25,000 fans registering to vote or signing up for election alerts, and over 100,000 single use water bottles being eliminated.

Masthay has this to say about his collaboration with HeadCount:

I’m a firm believer that if our democracy is going to function as intended, we all as citizens have an obligation to be informed and participate in said democracy, that’s why I am and will continue to be a supporter of HeadCount and their mission. My relationship with HeadCount started over a decade ago and out of our partnership has come some of the most cherished pieces in my portfolio.

Masthay is most well known for his unique style of reduction block printing in the concert art arena. His blend of traditional techniques and love of live music has made him one of the most prominent figures in the rock art industry. Masthay established his own letterpress studio in 2001 and is currently based out of Hartford, CT. He has also done work for Black Sabbath, Foo Fighters, South Park, Queens of the Stone Age, Umphrey’s McGee, Widespread Panic, and many more.

  • Mike Peters of The Alarm bring “Gathering” to Gramercy Theater June 23-24

Mike Peters of legendary Welsh band The Alarm returns to New York City for three nights this month at the Gramercy Theater, June 23-24. These dates following a recent reschedule of May dates.

Part of the original heydey of MTV, Mike has been leading The Alarm for more than 40 years, having continued to make his music independently, without compromise, to present day. The Alarm made their name in the mid-80s, signed to I.R.S. at the same time as REM.

Mike Peters’ new album Forwards will be released on June 2, and features songs written while Mike was holed up in the hospital dealing with a dual leukemia relapse and a case of pneumonia. Writing the new songs – as well as performing them, as they emerged, for hospital staff – reframed his outlook and pulled through, as did his wife, Jules, who was confronted with a breast cancer diagnosis during the same time.

The BBC has done a pair of documentaries about the couple and their big struggle, and maintain their generous spirits, Mike and Jules have renovated a Welsh chapel into a free-of-charge respite for folks undergoing treatment for cancer.

The shows at the Gramercy are a satellite edition of The Gathering, an event that Mike organizes every year in Wales. Mike started The Gathering in 1992 as a way of making sure that The Alarm connected with fans – in Wales – every year despite whatever else he might be doing.

Many US fans traveled to the UK for these events, however, the NYC version of The Gathering was instated as an annual institution of its own as well so as to keep fans from having to make that expensive, arduous journey. The Gathering celebrated 30 years in 2022, and has been held in NYC for over two decades.

The Alarm’s love affair with NYC dates back to their gig with U2 at Pier 84 in 1983. Soon after, they sold out The Ritz on their own and have maintained a really strong relationship with the city even since.

Additionally, a fan from New York (who now runs The Alarm’s Facebook page) traveled to Wales to visit Mike’s home in the winter of 1984. Mike’s mother was floored that someone from NY would travel all the way to Wales to seek out her son that she invited the (then) young lady for Christmas dinner. Stories like this are what make The Gathering a recurring NYC event.

    Tickets are available here.

This comprehensive playlist kicks off with the three new singles released in the run up to Forwards, singles “Next,” “Whatever” and the title track, “Forwards.”

  • Sydney Worthley, Buggy Jive Win Big at 5th Annual Eddies Music Awards

On a night celebrating the best music of the Capital Region, soul rock singer-songwriter Buggy Jive took home both the Video and Album of the Year honors, at the 5th annual Capital Region Thomas Edison Music Awards. Held on Sunday, April 30 at Proctors, indie pop artist Sydney Worthley went on to receive Record of the Year, in addition to a stunning performance with E.R.I.E.

Other big winners at the ceremony were Frank Cavone of Mirth Films who took home three awards, and WEXT and Albany Symphony which each received two. The Eddies Music Awards are adjudicated by individuals who are active in the local music community and administered by Proctors Collaborative.

In the first five years, we have had over 450 different individuals, bands and organizations nominated, some multiple times, for a total of 950 finalists. There is a pre-party each year for the nominees. There is an annual Eddies Music Hall of Fame event. We featured over 45 artists performing at our events. All of it exists as a vessel for the music community to come together and celebrate.

Eddies Music Awards founder/co-producer Jim Murphy

Since 2021, Eddies judges have also singled out individuals and organizations whose contributions to the music community don’t fit neatly in a traditional category. Merit award winners this year were:

Family Tree, a collective of five musicians (Steve Candlen, Chris Carey, Lori Friday, Kenny Hohman, Chad Ploss) that invite musical guests from the region to participate weekly at their 18-month-and-counting Monday night residency at Putnam Place in Saratoga.

“Courtyard Sessions” by Mirth Films, a 26-episode mini-concert video series featuring local musicians.

Instruments for Students, a program of the Vanguard, a support organization of the Albany Symphony, which has collected hundreds of musical instruments through the years, donating them through schools to families who cannot afford to rent or own their own instruments.

    poster show woodstock

WRAPS, started in 2022, is the first large scale, northeast expo exclusively presenting these works. Modeled on, and with the support of, the famous The Rock Poster Show (T.R.P.S.) held annually since 1988 in San Francisco, WRAPS is poised to become the premier event for poster collectors in the northeast. This year’s event promises to be a versatile and exciting show.

WRAPS will feature a wide selection of art for sale ranging from vintage psychedelia and silkscreen prints, to modern digital artwork and photography. Exhibitors will include well known artists as well as newcomers making a splash on the scene. In addition to a formidable artist line-up, there will be multi-media productions, talks, and seminars/workshops throughout the event.

Live music will be presented each night with Woodstock’s own Misty Mountain Ramblers on Saturday and Sabrina & the Gems on Sunday. There will also be live music throughout the day on Saturday (10 am – 6pm) and Sunday (10 am – 5pm) as well as food trucks providing delectable delights! See Synopsis below for full music schedule.

Since the 1990s interest in artistic concert posters and flyers has increased exponentially. Promotional pieces from the classic rock era to the modern music age have become highly sought after collectibles. Rock poster art is an internationally recognized art form, featuring many talented artists spanning decades long careers from graphic design to commissioned works, garnering attention in fine art galleries and auctions.

Held just a couple of miles down the road from the center of Woodstock, WRAPS is produced by local artists Mike DuBois and Kenny Schneidman with Lizzie Vann, owner of the newly renovated Bearsville Center.
