  • American Symphony Orchestra Announces 2023-24 Season

    The American Symphony Orchestra has recently announced plans for its 62nd season which will feature four full-orchestra programs at Carnegie Hall and Manhattan’s Riverside Church among other concert events. The 2023-24 season will commence on September 7th with a free opening picnic concert from the symphony orchestra, titled American Expression, and will end on March 22nd of next year.

    In 1962, Leopold Stokowski founded the American Symphony Orchestra as a way to provide music within the means of everyone. That mission has been enhanced and expanded since the year of 1992 which brought forth Music Director Leon Botstein, who introduced thematic concerts to the orchestra in order to explore music from the perspective of visual arts, literature, religion, and history, as well as revive scarcely performed works that audiences would otherwise never have had the opportunity to experience through a live orchestra.

    Keeping to this theme, the 62nd season is to be littered with rich performances of select compositions from history’s choral catalogue. A few program highlights include a performance of George Frideric Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus which will be presented in Morningside Heights at the Riverside Church on December 14th. This will be followed by a rare performance of Dvořák’s Requiem in January at Carnegie Hall. On March 22nd, Schoenberg’s massive cantata, Gurre-Lieder, infrequently performed due to the unusually large number of musicians required, will bring the Orchestra’s season to an impressive close.

    Botstein, who will conduct each of the four program’s performances, mentions his excitement for the ongoing mission as he enters the new season saying, “As we prepare for our 62nd season, I am energized by our ongoing ability to renew live orchestral music as a vital force in contemporary American culture. Now that we have emerged from the major restrictions of the pandemic, the ASO continues that mission in 2023-24 by presenting large choral works that highlight the power of the human voice.”

    The American Symphony Orchestra will also be offering two free performances under America UNBOUND at Bryant Park as a part of its chamber concert series. These performances will be presenting percussionist and composer Javier Diaz’s new work Suns and Moons of a New World. In addition, the organization will also offer a digital premier of Ficciones, an immersive concert film experience featuring Roberto Sierra’s Concerto for Electric Violin and Orchestra performed by renowned soloist Tracy Silverman.

    In the years immediately following World War I, the American artistic scene experienced an extraordinary burst of creativity. Responding to the horror and brutality of the war, artists, writers, and composers rejected the ideals of the previous century, focusing instead on creating a means of expression that would reflect the realities this new age required. With jazz, many American composers found a source of distinctly American inspiration that was modern and exciting. Some of the works offered in this program reflect a fascination with the language of the Roaring Twenties and its rhythmic energy and catchy melodies. Other composers sought to push the boundaries of musical expression with ‘ultra-modern’ language such as jagged counterpoint or atonality. The experimental impulses of this generation are presented here with works by some of its key proponents.

    The ASO continues its series of free concerts in Bryant Park with America UNBOUND. The program underlines the importance of multicultural influences in the music of the Americas and presents the new chamber work Suns and Moons of a New World, by percussionist and composer Javier Diaz. Offering a compositional look at the American continent unbound through musical histories that emphasize the universality of sound, word, and song, the piece incorporates musical and cultural elements from across the Americas, including the use of a J.S. Bach chorale in Venezuelan merengue. It is performed by a chamber ensemble of ASO musicians and features GRAMMY-nominated Imani Winds’ oboist Toyin Spellman-Diaz. Commissioned by the ASO, the work received its world premiere at Bryant Park in May 2023.

    The ASO offers an alternative to Handel’s Messiah with another oratorio, Judas Maccabaeus. Set amidst the story of Hanukkah, the oratorio is a dramatization of the Jews’ resistance to their oppressors during the Maccabean Revolt. Handel’s depiction of a peoples’ triumph over tyranny is brought to life through exultant choruses, sung by members of Bard Festival Chorale and Riverside Choir and soloists. Soloists will be announced at a later date.

    Antonin Dvořák’s Requiem (1890) is nowhere nearly as well-known or performed as the composer’s late symphonies, chamber pieces, or other choral works, such as his StabatMater. Dvořák’s Requiem is close to Fauré’s or Cherubini’s contributions to the genre in its often introspective mood, its gentle melodies and overall lyricism. The use of a four-note chromatic motif in almost all sections of the piece gives the work a feel of thematic unity. While rich in invention and expressivity, its melancholic examination of the mysteries of life and death make the Requiem more deserving of further exploration in the public sphere.

    To mark the centennial of its 1913 world premiere in Vienna, and more than 90 years since its 1932 American premiere by American Symphony Orchestra founder Leopold Stokowski with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the ASO presents Arnold Schoenberg’s massive and rarely performed Gurre-Lieder. Wagnerian in conception, this cantata represents the ideal of late Romanticism, with its lush, colorful orchestration of more than 150 musicians, endless melodies, and a highly chromatic harmonic language. The work is seldom performed due the sheer number of artists involved and the logistical challenges it poses. The cantata springs from a sonnet in an 1868 novella titled A Cactus Blooms by the young Danish poet Jens Peter Jacobsen, who based his prose on a 14th-century Gurre legend about King Valdemar, his passion for the maiden Tove Lille, and their love tryst at Gurre Castle. Soloists will be announced at a later date.

  • Goose Release “Live at Radio City Music Hall”

    Goose has recently announced the release of a landmark concert recording commemorating the band’s two-night performance in June of 2022 at the New York City venue. Live at Radio City Music Hall is now available digitally while a limited edition, vinyl box set is up for pre-order.

    Although Goose is no stranger to sold-out shows and incredible success, their performances on June 24th and 25th of last year proved to be a major turning point in their career. The two sold out shows not only allowed them to properly showcase their critically acclaimed breakthrough LP, Dripfield, but brought striking sit-ins from special guests Trey Anastasio and Father John Misty.

    Live at Radio City Music Hall includes the complete setlist from both nights which feature acoustic renditions of Goose fan favorites like “Elmeg the Wise,” covers of Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire, and more, as well as a weekend-closing version of The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” featuring Anastasio on guitar and Misty on drums.

    Goose’s vocalist and guitar player Rick Mitarotonda raves about the band-altering experience saying, “Playing Radio City Music Hall felt like a unifying moment for the band. I was anticipating being nervous considering all of the history and prestige of that room, but it surprisingly ended up feeling really comfortable. I think that speaks to the magic of that venue, and moment for the band. It felt like both reaching a destination and opening a door to a new beginning at the same time.”

    Following this stunning release, Goose will be headlining multiple dates this summer on their 2023 tour beginning in June and lasting until November. Their forty date trek includes a sold-out, two-night run at Louisville, KY’s Louisville Palace Theatre; a sold-out, two-night Independence Day celebration at Asbury Park, NJ’s Stone Pony Summer Stage; and visits to famed venues like Saratoga Springs, NY’s Saratoga Performing Arts Center; Detroit, MI’s Masonic Temple Theatre; Santa Barbara, CA’s Santa Barbara Bowl; and Las Vegas, NV’s Brooklyn Bowl.

    Thankfully for the “Ganders,” Goose’s hardcore fans, the band will not stop there. They will also continue to be among the headline acts at an array of upcoming festivals and events, including Rothbury, MI’s Electric Forest; Scranton, PA’s Peach Music Festival; and headlining for two nights with four unique sets in Garrettsville, OH at the Resonance Music and Arts Festival.

  • Schenectady’s Jazz on Jay Returns For The Summer of 2023

    With summer right around the corner, locations all over New York are preparing to hold lively outdoor music entertainment for the public. Schenectady is no different as the city’s concert series “Jazz on Jay” is back for the summer of 2023 and is already well under way.

    Jazz on Jay began on June 1st and performances are held every Thursday from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM on the cobblestone stretch of Schenectady’s beautiful Jay Street Arcade.

    The concert series is completely free to the public and works to support the region’s talent as every performance will be carried out by working artists and educators. This year’s line up includes several special visits, including the swing of the well-established, fiddle and vocal-driven Teresa Broadwell Band; the Slam Stewart-inspired musings of the Tarik Shah Trio; the North Country Django Reinhardt fire of the 2022 Eddie Award-winning Hot Club of Saratoga; and the creative jazz of the Michael Bisio Quartet.

    In addition to the soothing sounds of jazz, this year’s Jazz on Jay will introduce a new component in which local artists Heather Hutchison and Oscar Bogran will create artwork based on the music they hear being played during a specific performance. Hutchinson will be present for Mike Purcell & Company’s performance on June 22nd while Bogran will create his art on both August 10th and August 31st.

    With a rule that performers cannot play “Jazz on Jay” consecutive years in a row, concert goers are in for a summer of fresh talent and smooth jazz.

  • Pink Talking Fish Celebrate 10 Year Anniversary With East Coast Fall Tour and “This Must be the Cirque”

    Pink Talking Fish is hitting the ground running this summer as they celebrate their 10 year anniversary with over twenty shows, three of which will be performed on various stages across New York State.

    The Hybrid Tribute Fusion Act spent the first half of 2023 honoring multiple album and concert anniversary’s for the three bands they admire most: Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, and Phish. They celebrated Pink Floyd’s staple album “Dark Side Of The Moon” in light of its 50th anniversary by playing it through each night they performed. In addition to that specific album, they included Talking Heads’ “Stop Making Sense” in homage of the 40 years that have passed since the Talking Heads’ concert film that took fans by storm in 1984.

    Throughout this summer and into the fall, however, the band will be commemorating their own success and longevity through concerts, festivals, and other events. To kick off the summer of celebration and music, Pink Talking Fish will play a Dead & Company afterparty in Saratoga Springs where they will sprinkle in songs by Grateful Dead throughout their own setlist. Other highlights include a Southeast run, a Halloween Weekend “Island Tour” in Rhode Island/Long Island, and a stacked festival season that includes performances in New Jersey, West Virginia, Ohio, Vermont, Kentucky, and Indiana.

    The band doesn’t plan to stop there as they will be spending the 4th of July weekend giving their fans another high-energy, holiday weekend of music in New England. On July 1st, Pink Talking Fish will return to Portsmouth, NH on the outdoor stage of Cisco Brewers then continue forward by bringing the act back to Cape Cod for a two-night run at The Wellfleet Beachcomber.

    To fully celebrate the completion of a 10 year run, the band will perform a special anniversary show in their hometown of Boston, Massachusetts at The Paradise. These are only a few of the events that Pink Talking Fish is looking forward to as they commemorate a decade of creating dream setlists and performing the music of three diverse and, to many, iconic bands in a new and fresh way.

    Also announced is the Saturday, October 14th event “Pink Talking Fish Presents: The Must be the Cirque,” at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester.

    This Must Be The Cirque, the follow-up to 2018’s critically-acclaimed Junta Circus transforms The Cap into a magical circus voyage set to the soundtrack of Pink Floyd, Talking Heads and Phish. PTF is teaming up with cirque troupe Modern Gypsies who has worked with Phish, String Cheese Incident and more to enhance the live music experience. Tickets available here

  • New York City’s Quarters of Change Announce US Tour For The Fall

    Quarters of Change, an alternative rock band based in New York City, has just announced a headline tour spanning the US. The group will kick off their twenty-city trek in Virginia Beach on September 14th and will come to a close in NYC in December.

    The band is no stranger to the title of headliner as earlier this year, Quarters of Change wrapped their first-ever US headline run, The Deluxe Tour. The inaugural event was largely sold-out and featured the group in historic venues including Los Angeles, CA’s The Roxy Theater, and New York’s Irving Plaza.  

    Last year, Quarters of Change unveiled a deluxe edition of their debut studio album Into The Rift. Originally released in July of 2022, Into The Rift introduced and solidified Quarters of Change as a standout quartet going beyond the typical conventions and traditional boundaries of genre to take the rock scene by storm. Into The Rift (Deluxe) boasts three new songs, including “To Let Go,” “T Love – Extended,” and “Blue Copper.” 

    Through the release and re-release of their first album along with shoutouts from celebrity fans such as Joe Jonas, Fred Durst, and Lewis Capaldi, Quarters of Change have worked their way not only into the limelight but into a second headline tour. The band is expected to announce plans for new music in the coming weeks, but until then fans can look forward to the upcoming performances.

  • John Oliver and Seth Meyers To Appear On New York City Stage In August

    John Oliver and Seth Meyers, two Emmy Award-winning comedians, will be combining their individual stand-up tours on August 17th at The Beacon Theatre in New York City.

    As two prominent television personalities, Meyers and Oliver have been increasingly impacted by the Writers Guild of America Strike of 2023 which has put Last Week Tonight With John Oliver and Late Night With Seth Meyers on an indefinite stand still. The hosts are continuing to move forward in spite of the controversy and have both announced stand-up tours to last the summer.

    Oliver is a long-time participant and pro in the stand-up world and continues to perform sold-out venues across the country. He is best known for being the host and producer of his tonight show along with select appearances in television and film including Disney’s The Lion King, Community, Big Mouth, Bob’s Burgers, and many more. For his work as a writer and comedian, Oliver has gone on to receive twenty-three Primetime Emmys, five Writer’s Guild Awards, two Critics’ Choice Television Awards, four Television Critics Association Awards, and two Peabodys.

    In a similar light, Meyers is no stranger to the stage or the screen as he began his television career with “Saturday Night Live” in 2001. He has been given the title of everything from host to executive producer and has been nominated for an Emmy Award twenty-six times for his work on the screen.  In addition, Meyers was named one of the 2014 TIME 100, Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.

  • Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Announces 50 Years of Hip Hop Exhibit

    The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced the opening of a new Hip Hop exhibit in commemoration of the genre’s 50 year anniversary. The exhibit, “Holla If Ya Hear Me,” will be the most in-depth of its kind and will open on June 29th at the Hall of Fame’s primary location in Cleveland, Ohio.

    The exhibit, sponsored by Technics, will feature some of the most influential artists of hip-hop ranging back to its birth including: Jay-Z, Grandmaster Flash, Roxanne Shante, Chuck D, Salt N’Pepa, The Notorious B.I.G., Queen Latifah, and countless more. From these artists, “Holla If Ya Hear Me” will display handwritten lyrics, clothing, some of the earliest gear used to create hip-hop beats, as well as displays highlighting historic social issues that inspired infamous singles.

    More specific artifacts being highlighted include the handbill from the “All Star Birthday Bash for DJ Kool Herc”, which served as the birth of hip-hop at the 1520 Sedgewick Avenue house party in 1973, along with items from other key moments such as the release of Rapper’s Delight and hip-hop’s first rivalry of 1984.  

    “Holla If Ya Hear Me” will continue through “the new school” era featuring artifacts from the time’s most important moments like LL COOL J’s first single on Def Jam Records; First Album by female hip-hop act to go Gold & Platinum; Salt-N-Pepa’s jacket’s from the “Push It” video; and select items that commemorate hip-hop’s social consciousness which will feature artists from Public Enemy; Kendrick Lamar; Ice-T and Queen Latifah. The Moguls of hip-hop will end the exhibit with pieces from Jay-Z, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Russell Simons and more.

    Salt N’ Pepa, the incredibly successful hip-hop group from the 80s and 90s who gave public audiences the music staples “Push It” and “Shoop,” commented on their extraordinary past in hip-hop and their anticipation for the new exhibit.

    Going on to receive multiple platinum records and becoming one of the best-selling hip-hop groups of all time, was more than we could have hoped for. It was a major milestone in hip-hop’s trajectory over the past 50 years and we are so excited to be able to celebrate this important moment in music’s history with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. We are honored to be a part of the new Holla If Ya Hear Me exhibit and hope everyone enjoys seeing some of our most iconic and important pieces from our career.

    To further celebrate the anniversary, the Rock Hall Shop will be offering an assortment of merchandise including T-shirts, hoodies, and accessories from some of hip-hop’s most influential artists and brands. New styles will be released all summer long.

  • 5th Annual Afterglow Concert Series Showcases NYU Talent Throughout the Summer

    CAD Management and Equity Residential kicked off their Afterglow Concert Series on May 31st. The series, which runs until September 7th, features headlining performances by students and alumni of the NYU Clive Davis Institute (CDI) of Recorded Music at venues across New York City and New Jersey.

    CAD Management is a consulting firm that advises in the development and growth of artists and brands which has partnered with multifamily owner and operator Equity Residential to produce the fifth iteration of the Afterglow Concert series. This years series is a collection of free intimate rooftop and lounge performances that aims to support the development of NYU CDI student performers as well as independent artists across the tri-state area.

    The headliners from the institute include Jackson Craig and Chloé Sauntereau with special appearances by students such as Zoe Tan and SENAIDA. The tour will also feature a set by SK Da DJ and regional support from NYU Steinhardt alumni Mari Barbieri and New Jersey based Jackie Nese.

    The Afterglow Concert series is presented at a time in which the demand for concerts has reached an all time high, giving independent artists the unique opportunity to tap into the environment of insistent concert requests as well as continue to support the independent live music scene across New York and New Jersey themselves.

  • The Hold Steady Present Positive Jam Music Festival at Arrowood Farm

    This summer, Brooklyn based rock band, The Hold Steady will be presenting an all-star music festival, Positive Jam. The inaugural event will be held on August 5th at Arrowood Farms, a local festival hot spot in the small town and agricultural hub of Accord, New York.

    The Positive Jam festival will serve as another commemoration of the rock band’s 20 year anniversary which passed this January. On top of the band headlining the event themselves, they will be joined by a line up of close friends and idols including, Guided By Voices, The Tallest Man On Earth, Laura Stevenson, I Get Wild (plays Talking Heads), and Oceanator.

    The event, presented in association with Impact Concerts and Ground Control Touring, will kick off at 5 PM on August 4th with THS Positive Jam Prelims Pool Party. The welcome gathering will be located at the INNESS Luxury Hotel and Resort and will feature DJ sets from The Hold Steady along with a collection of fun activities for festival goers to participate in.

    On the 5th, the star-studded lineup will be accompanied by Arrowood Farms locally inspired craft beers and comfort food, along with diverse Hudson Valley-based food trucks, clothing, and arts vendors.

    Positive Jam is just one event of a multitude of planned appearances by the rock band for the summer and autumn of 2023. The Hold Steady will play their live show at various locations across the country and will appear in their home-base of Brooklyn four times.

    Their landmark 20th anniversary will further be commemorated by the upcoming publication of The Gospel of The Hold Steady: How a Resurrection Really Feels, a new oral history by Michael Hann and The Hold Steady, which will be available to the public on July 25.

    “We’ve talked about our ideal festival for many years, and we’re excited to make it a reality to celebrate our 20th year as a band,” says The Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn. “We are thrilled to have some of our favorite artists joining us to make an incredible day of music and community in a beautiful location.”

  • Barker Park Kids’ Series Returns to Troy for Summer 2023

    Troy Savings Bank Music Hall has announced the return of the Barker Park Kids’ Series for the summer of 2023. The free concerts will take place every Thursday at 11 AM starting July 6th to August 24th at the Barker Park playground in Troy.

    Troy Music Hall is strongly committed to supporting education in the arts as well as enriching the community, and this concert series is one of many events in which they offer free and discounted performances for students and kids. Additionally, as a way to further assist the Troy community, this year’s Barker Park Kids’ Series will also be partnering with local organization, Sidewalk Warriors, a group of volunteers who support individuals in need. Throughout the series, the park will serve as a drop off location for items to be donated especially shampoo, boxes of cereal, and more.

    Along with their mission of education and enrichment, the Music Hall aims to foster diverse cultural experiences for their audiences. Thus, the partners will present a lineup of musicians spanning a multitude of genres including historic jazz and traditional West African music.

    Jordan is an artist rooted in traditional music from West Africa and the diaspora combined with today’s sounds. His early influence in song writing and performance is coupled in a unique way meant to equally inspire and entertain. 

    July 13th – RAGTIME WIND JAMMERS

    The “Ragtime Windjammers” play historic tunes meant to illustrate several facets of Jazz music as it developed in America around the turn of the 20th century. Audience participation is encouraged and several volunteers are used to visually illustrate several acoustic ideas. 

    July 20th – ELLEN SINOPOLI DANCE COMPANY

    31-year-old not-for-profit arts organization located in NYS’s Capital Region. ESDC’s commitment to CREATE, COLLABORATE, EDUCATE and PARTNER remains in the forefront as it shares its work with diverse audiences through concerts, showcases, residencies, workshops, educational and community outreach. 

    July 27th – ANDY THE MUSIC MAN

    Popular children’s musician renowned for the special way he connects with his audiences. A talented guitarist, mandolin player and songwriter, Andy mingles traditional and original songs and novelty, delighting and involving kids through sing-a-longs, dancing, play-acting and storytelling. 

    August 3rd – HEARD

    A collective of musicians that bring their skills and passion for world music, jazz and improvising together to create irresistible grooves set in a unique sonic tapestry. Together for a decade, their vibrant sound incorporates influences from West Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean and beyond. 

    August 10th – DJ HollyW8D

    Originally from Brooklyn, DJ HollyW8D energizes crowds throughout the Upstate New York Capital Region. He has always gravitated to music throughout his life and hopes to bring versatility in his music mixing wherever he goes. Drawing inspiration from many including his mother, Sean P. Diddy Combs and DJ Puffy, HollyW8D aims to inspire others with his daily grind and optimistic energy.

    August 17th – WATCH REGGIE RUN

    Formed in 2017 by Dave and his son Luke who has autism, WATCH REGGIE RUN, is named after how they spend their time when not making music (watching Luke’s sister Reggie run in Track and XC meets). The father/son duo shares a love of music and has found it to be a great way of connecting despite Luke’s limited communication skills. The songs were all inspired by Luke. It’s fun music for ALL AGES!
