  • Today’s Outfit To Promote Nostalgic New Single With Capitol Theatre Performance

    The anthemic rock musical trio Today’s Outfit has dropped a brand new single titled “Best Seats in the House” with a five-minute long music video to accompany the release. The band will be rocking their nostalgic sound on Saturday, August 12th at Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester!

    Since debuting two years ago at the Toonerville festival, the pandemic-formed band has opened for hard rock legends Living Colour, released an inaugural EP, and has built up an impressive reputation by frequently performing in New York City and throughout the greater New York region. The band is comprised of bassist Mark Garufi, drummer Grant Zacharias, and lead singer and keyboardist Andrew Wood, whose previously active band Bridges and Powerlines experienced runs on the CMJ top 200 radio charts.

    Although the band’s name may lead audiences to believe Today’s Outfit is all about using music to express ideas and sounds of the modern day, their inspiration and melodies work to contradict that. With their ’80s New Wave influenced keyboard instrumentals along with a ten-string bass bringing back the ’70s classic rock era, Today’s Outfit proves to be a trio that accepts how the past influences the present.

    Their new single, “Best Seats in the House,” comes from the band’s unreleased first full-length record titled It’s AlgoRhythmic!, set to be released this fall. The song itself has energetic vocals and instrumentals that transport listeners to the time of The Outfield and classics such as “Your Love” while the lyrics tell a familiar story about our ever-shrinking attention spans and the switch-cost effect. Although the video that accompanies the single is more or less underwhelming, showing the band play their music with various scenes at a theater, the impressive melodies including a rocking Moog solo along with the mix of past and present influences screams that Today’s Outfit deserves attention and their single is worth another listen.

  • Hearing Aide: The Hot Sardines ‘C’est La Vie’

    The Hot Sardines, an authentic New York City-based jazz band, released their newest album C’est La Vie on Aug. 4. The album arrived with ten highly complex tracks including covers and reinventions of jazz classics as well as original songs written by Elizabeth Bougerol and Evan Palazzo.

    The co-writes of C’est La Vie founded the lively Hot Sardines back in 2011, getting their start by playing various underground parties in Brooklyn. Since then, they have released six albums in total, all aiming to reinvigorate classic jazz music for the modern-day ear and spread their brand worldwide. With flourishing success taking them away from home time and time again, the band decided to record more music leading Bougerol to more thoroughly explore French influences which quickly took over what is now C’est La Vie.

    The new album is a bilingual project with tracks both in English and French, providing listeners with newly interpreted classics from “Moon River” to “La Vie En Rose” along with various impressive, original compositions. When it came to the track’s production, Bougerol and Palazzo called on collaborators from all over the world ranging from Los Angeles all the way to Beijing. The pair aimed to create a stripped-down sound to help them record nearly one-hundred-year-old songs remotely with modern technology while keeping their original spirit and polish alive. With transient instrumentals and Bougerol’s timeless voice, the album takes listeners on a beautiful musical journey and sets a relaxing tone encapsulating the essence of the motto “C’est La Vie.”

    The album is complete with track after track of slow and smooth jazz numbers supported by strong string and horn instrumentals with Bougerol’s voice slicing through it all. The co-founder’s vocal talent and control can be heard in every song and even takes on the Audrey Hepburn classic “Moon River.” Though the reinvention begins with seemingly risky harmonies presenting themselves as shaky and out of place, when the song picks up with a more classic jazz nightclub vibe and a laid-back tempo, it begins to truly shine. The classic lyrics continue to express the heartbreaking contradictions of relationships, but the musical composition supports the album’s title and overall message, conveying a newer interpretation to not take those heartbreaks so seriously because c’est la vie.

    When it comes to original songs sprinkled throughout, “Adieu L’amour” stands out among the rest with its diverting and more serious sound. From the very start, the song seems to mix with Latin American styles with its faster pace and conga drum-like sound. Where the song continues to divert is in its lyrics, which have outward emotions of spite and blame against the love whose lies “closed the door” possibly going to show that living by the shrug of the shoulder motto of “that’s life” isn’t as easy or as possible as it seems. What brings the track back to the unity of the jazz album is the strength of the band’s playing and Bougerol’s controlled vocals occasionally slipping into French.

    Throughout the album, there are numerous other highlights including a hushed “La Vie en Rose” duet between Bougerol and Bob Parins along with “Meet Me at the Bottom of the Bottle” which ends the album on a fantastic note. C’est La Vie is now available on various platforms along with a touching music video for “Moon River” directed by Greg Mottola.

    On top of their new album, The Hot Sardines have also lined up tour dates for 2023-2024 which began on July 15th and will continue sporadically through April. The band will visit locations all over the United States, Tokyo, and Toronto, including select stages across New York State including a debut at the infamous Carnegie Hall.

  • Gregory McLoughlin Drops Uplifting New Single ‘Woody Guthrie’

    Gregory McLoughlin has ended the month of July in an incredible way as he just released his uplifting new track “Woody Guthrie.” The songwriter’s 13th single as a solo artist came paired with an exclusive video premiere on YouTube following his regular Monday Night Livestream.

    McLoughlin is a multitalented artist based in Jersey City whose expertise as a bass player and songwriter makes him a man of many musical occupations. On top of writing and recording his own music as a solo artist and working as a freelance upright and electric bass player around the New York City area, McLoughlin also takes time to write music for other musicians and bands including BuzzUniverse, Julia Kirk, Beeman and Bannon, Ana Oh, Anthony Tamburro, Ross Sandler, and many more. McLoughlin has also been able to spread his love of music through live-streaming, performing virtual concerts every Monday Night at 8:00 PM on his YouTube Live page.

    As fans now know after his latest live stream, McLoughlin’s recent single, named after and inspired by the legendary American Folk artist Woody Guthrie, is not only a dedication to the incredible musical powers that have come before but also declares that even though life is difficult, there is always a new day ahead with a silver lining. The track is a fast-paced, upbeat tune that includes a contagious melody allowing the words to match the instrumentals. Although the folk style and somewhat strange lyrics may not be for everyone, the single is worth a listen and is guaranteed to get even the stingiest critiques tapping their feet and grasping a message “that reflects the sound of Woody Guthrie.”

  • Kristian Montgomery & The Winterkill Band Release Layered Fourth Album ‘Lower County Outlaw’

    Kristian Montgomery & The Winterkill Band will be releasing their fourth album in three years. The twelve-track journey titled Lower County Outlaw not only shows the exceptional range and skill of Montgomery as a multi-talented musician but displays an exceptional improvement in production and clarity from his previous records. With an August 5 release date, it will be accompanied by a promotional party at Pauly’s Hotel in Albany.

    Who is Kristian Montgomery?

    Kristian Montgomery has been a part of the music industry for a while and originally began his career as a metal vocalist, but has turned to country in recent years. Since the switch-up, his success has reached all new heights as his music has received increasing attention all over the world and has even received a nomination for the New England Music Awards and Boston Music Awards.

    The New England based artist doesn’t have a static genre, however, as his music often drifts between rock, soul, and the blues as is evident in his previous three albums The Gravel Church, Prince of Poverty, followed by his latest, A Heaven for Heretics. Montgomery’s first two albums were raw reflections of the dark aspects of his past while A Heaven for Heretics worked to make sure listeners knew they weren’t alone. No matter the music, if it comes from Montgomery, people are sure to experience the countless layers of human emotion, struggle, and isolated country living.

    The band’s new album, Lower County Outlaw, has Andrew Kross on production, a producer who has worked with Grammy winning artists such as John Legend and Alicia Keys. Not only is the album’s production an incredible success with its crystal clear instrumentals and the strength of Montgomery’s vocals, but the story created slaps listeners straight in the ears. Lower County Outlaw is a project of pure heartbreak, rage, and spiteful energy as it tells listeners about a woman who is in every way an outlaw when it comes to Mongomery’s heart.

    Album Review

    For the most part, the album stays close to Montgomery’s usual style of country/rock, at times giving listeners a feel of his metal-head past. Throughout the album, his voice soars as strong as ever with enticing melodies and crazy instrumentals. However, tracks like “Easy To Forget You When I’m Gone” and “The 4th of July” see the artist taking a step back from the spiteful lyrics and in-your-face rock styles seen in other album tracks such as “Somebody’s Baby Mama” and “The Girl With The Gauges In Her Ears.” “Easy To Forget You When I’m Gone” is a forceful reminder that Montgomery is a modern country artist, taking listeners on a slow physical and emotional drive away from constant and painful reminders of the woman he no longer has.

    The final track combines his rage full lyrics with an old upbeat country melody that closes the album with a goodbye that foreshadows a return. During the track, Montgomery mercilessly rips the woman mentioned throughout the twelve tracks apart, similar to the rest of the album, and simultaneously creates hope for himself to stand on saying, “when you’ve got nothing, you’ve got nothing left to lose.” While Lower County Outlaw is well-put together and easily catches listeners attention, the themes seem to cut women down in stereotypical ways in order to build the lyricist up. Although stemming from a place of heartbreak and loss, the message distracts from the music.

    Overall, the album is definitely worth a listen and fans should be excited to hear it live throughout the band’s summer tour stretch and feel free to make it their angry heartbreak album!

  • Celebrate Christmas In July the 2023 Radio City Christmas Spectacular

    “Christmas in July” takes on even greater meaning as MSGE has recently announced the return of the Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes for 2023. America’s favorite holiday show will begin on November 17 this winter and stretch to January 4 of next year at Radio City Music Hall.

    This year’s show will allow the Rockettes to put their amazing skills on display through incredibly difficult routines and will once again feature the fan-favorite scene “Dance of the Frost Fairies,” which was fully reimagined in 2022 making the Christmas Spectacular a one of a kind experience. The scene sees the Rockettes as fantastical winged fairies, performing alongside fairy-drones that dance high above the audience creating an immersive experience for anyone lucky enough to be involved. The remainder of the ninety-minute show will be jammed packed with nine show-stopping numbers by the professional dance group.

    The Rockettes were originally founded in 1925 and are two years shy of celebrating their 100th anniversary, making them the longest-running precision dance company in America. The dancers are known all around the world for their incredible athleticism, unity, and immeasurable precision through their unique style combining elements of ballet, jazz, and tap dancing.

    Not only is the group a staple of Christmas, but the dancers also appear in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Christmas in Rockefeller Center tree lighting among numerous other appearances including award shows and national television. Most recently, the Rockettes were featured in the Hallmark movie “A Holiday Spectacular” where they performed with Mariah Carey in her holiday special filmed at Madison Square Garden, “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to All!”

    The Rockettes are not the only aspect of a New York Christmas that has been around for almost 100 years, however, as the Christmas Spectacular itself originally began at Radio City back in 1933. With a mission not only to meet the needs of guests and ensure diversity all around, Radio City’s Spectacular and the Rockettes have brought joy and holiday spirit to more than 70 million people from around the world and will continue to do so in their 90th season.   • 13th Annual Lake George Music Festival to be Held in August

    The 13th annual Lake George Music Festival will be held August 6th to the 17th. The festival will take place at the historic and lakeside Carriage House on the grounds of the Fort William Henry Hotel.

    Lake George has often received wide-spread admiration and reverence as a cultural destination, yet that public sentiment seems to have lost its relish in recent years. This culturally vibrant location was once heavily influenced and supported by the presence of 20th century artists such as composer Samuel Barber and visual artist Georgia O’Keeffe. Though lacking these spirited artists and musicians today, The Lake George Music Festival hopes to shift the open opinion of the location back in this direction.

    The festival aims to make that change with the assistance of classical music. Individuals from the classical music world remain adamant in the town’s position as a cultural and musical staple, as it is known as one of the most loved classical artist retreat locations in the nation.

    This year’s musicians represent numerous professional orchestras including The Cleveland Orchestra,
    Philadelphia Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony, and the Czech Philharmonic. Students in the festival’s
    fellowship program represent nearly every music school in the nation including The Juilliard School, the
    Yale School of Music, and the Curtis Institute of Music. Musicians from as far away as New Zealand,
    China and the Czech Republic will be in attendance this season.

    This year, the festival will bring together over 100 classical artists, composers, podcasters, radio hosts, and pedagogues for public concerts and other events. The venue will offer festivalgoers an intimate experience bringing them up close to some of the nation’s best and brightest artists.

    The Festival is committed to commissioning and premiering new works. This year’s commissions include
    a new solo violin work by Juilliard School Dean, David Serkin Ludwig, a full Symphony Orchestra piece by
    Curtis alumni Sheridan Seyfried, and a chamber work by Curtis and Princeton graduate Alyssa Weinberg.

    Building off last year’s successful opening night where they presented Grammy award-winning trio Time
    for Three, the first public performance will be held on Aug. 9 in Shepard Park. Famed electroacoustic violin/cello duo ARKAI is set to perform with the Lake George Music Festival Symphony.

    The festival along with Lake George’s other music staple, the Lake George Jazz Weekend hosted by the Lake George Arts Project have both brought musical enrichment to the town. Still, the aura of summer tourism and people’s avoidance because of that make their enrichment difficult to solidify and bring to light.

    Founder and CEO of the festival, Alexander Lombard, claims, “Great arts and culture is happening in Lake George and now is your chance to be there for it vs. lamenting about missing what happened. The Curtis Institute of Music, where one of the Music Festival’s founders studied, as well as many of our alumni, uses the phrase “tomorrow’s artists today.” This, I feel, is especially relevant to what’s happening now in Lake George.”

  • Matthew Steckler To Perform Introspective Jazz Set At Caffe Lena

    The incredible saxophonist and woodwind specialist Matthew Steckler is set to perform at the infamous Caffè Lena this upcoming September 9th from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The artist will be joined by two fellow jazz enthusiasts at the venue, presenting to the audience an evening of original compositions reflecting the intimacy and introspection in jazz titled ‘Old Friends Beckoned, New Sounds Reckoned.’

    Steckler, also known as Matty Stecks, has long been recognized for his seminal work with the projects Dead Cat Bounce, Persiflage & Musical Tramps, and has further been featured at festivals and major concert series in North America and Europe. Although he is mainly recognized for his skills on the saxophone, Stecks’ diverse interests in vocal performance, keyboards, percussion, and electronic media brings a holistic approach to live musical experience.

    Stecks will be joined by pianist and composer Yayoi Ikawa who has also been featured in festivals and concerts in select locations around the world. She sees her interaction with jazz as a social activity and strives to collaborate with peers and pass it on to future generations. Lonnie Plaxico, a musician best known for his masterful integration of different forms – combining the rigorous technique of classical, the improvisation of jazz, and the rawness of funk into one exhilarating musical experience – will also be joining the performance. This trio is not a new team-up, however, as the artists have traveled to venues for over a year sharing ‘Old Friends Beckoned, New Sounds Reckoned’ with fellow jazz lovers.

    This live performance will be one in a long series of dates that Stecks plans to perform stretching all the way into December. The artist will stop at multiple places throughout New York in addition to Caffè Lena including Woodstock, Scotia, and Saratoga.

  • The Pretenders Announce A Rare & Intimate US Tour To Kick Off At The Bowery Ballroom

    The Pretenders have recently announced a US headline tour which is set to begin on August 16th at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom. Throughout the nine-date trek, the English-American rock band will perform in unique and intimate venues all across the country.

    The American tour comes ahead of the Pretenders’ eagerly awaited studio album Relentless which will drop on September 15th. Produced by multiple Grammy Award-nominee David Wrench (Courtney Barnett, David Byrne), Relentless marks the second consecutive full-length songwriting collaboration by group founder Chrissie Hynde and Pretenders’ guitarist James Walbourne. The album includes the recently released singles “Let The Sun Come In“ and “I Think About You Daily.”

    The live performances will give the Pretenders an incredible opportunity to introduce their new music directly to the fans. Throughout this run, the band will join Guns N’ Roses as a special guest on their own upcoming North American stadium tour for a total of seven performances making the Pretenders’ original nine-date tour stretch to seventeen.   • Lyle Lovett And John Hiatt Team Up For Run Of Joint Tour Dates, 6 Shows Across NYS

    The multitalented and legendary artists Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt are prepared to take the stage with one another this fall in an array of new announced tour dates. The joint performances will begin at the world renowned Carnegie Hall in NYC on October 2nd, halfway through Lovett’s “Together On Stage” tour which began July 18th.

    The two highly acclaimed artists have had a long running history of performing with one another, and this specific stretch of performances will take the duo all over the Northeast and Ontario throughout the month of October. The select dates will feature arrangements of Lovett’s critically acclaimed album 12th of June released last year which represents a more reflective side of the artist’s present life.

    Throughout the tour, Lovett will be joined by an arrangement of his Acoustic Group or his Large Band at each location. After Lovett and Hiatt’s performance at Carnegie Hall, the two powerhouse legends will make stops all around NY including in Ithaca, Westhampton Beach, and Buffalo.   • Blind Boys of Alabama Share “Work Until My Days Are Done” Ahead of Upcoming Album “Echoes Of The South”

    After 80 years of hard work, the Blind Boys of Alabama continue to wow audiences and touch souls with the recent release of their praiseworthy single “Work Until My Days Are Done.” The doo-wop, gospel ditty is the second release from the group’s upcoming album Echoes Of The South, which will officially be released to the public on September 8th through Single Rock Records.

    The Blind Boys of Alabama have faced more struggles and success in the music industry than most musicians will in their lifetimes. Their eight decades of experience and pure talent has led them from street performances in the Jim Crow South all the way to being the soundtrack of the Civil Rights Movement, giving them the chance to perform for three different United States Presidents and landing them as legends in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

    This dedication and persistence to one another and to their love of music is epitomized in their newest single, as they will not only “work” but “sing” until their days are done. There is no stopping the powerhouse group as they rely on one another and the shared agreement that “as long as everybody gives all that they have to give and we sing songs that touch the heart, we’ll live on forever.”

    Now, after losing their brothers in arms Paul Beasley and Benjamin Moore, the remaining members carry on, releasing their new album Echoes Of The South in their name and memory. Echoes Of The South not only marks the first album that the Blind Boys of Alabama have released in six years but also marks their first ever fully made in their home state, giving the tracks a deeper significance than can be imagined for the music vets.

    The tracklist is similarly rooted in coming home, drawing from the music that’s most inspired them over their careers: long-lost gospel classics, traditional spirituals and timeless R&B/soul cuts made famous by artists like Pops Staples and Curtis Mayfield. These incredible personal touches establish Echoes Of The South as a “homecoming” in countless senses of the word.

    With the two released singles from the album, “Friendship” along with “Work Until My Days Are Done,” it is evident that the Blind Boy’s newest music is some of their best. Their harmonies and messages touch hearts, while their bridges and power take listeners by surprise and never fail to get people on their feet with rafter-raising moments. This is something special that anyone with ears will not want to miss. Until September 8th, the Blind Boys of Alabama’s current members; McKinnie, Jimmy Carter, the Rev. Julius Love, Sterling Glass, and Joey Williams, will be touring the country from this July well into 2024.
