“American Wildflowers,” is the next event in the center’s WAMC@SPAC series with Vice President of News and Programming for WAMC, Joe Donahue, scheduled to host the event, featuring a conversation with the editors and illustrators of American Wildflowers: A Literary Field Guide Susan Barba and Leanne Shapton. A book signing by Barba and Shapton will follow.
As SPAC embraces Earth as a running theme throughout the season, it is fitting that this event celebrating wildflowers and the natural world takes place on Earth Day.
Elizabeth Sobol, President and CEO of SPAC.
American Wildflowers: A Literary Field Guide comprises of poems, essays, and letters from the 1700s up until today, and focuses on the place of wildflowers in our culture and the natural world. Publishers Weekly called it a “rich compendium of classic and contemporary writings inspired by wildflowers.” The book is complimented by Shapton’s watercolors.
Susan Barba is the author of two poetry collections, Fair Sun (2017) and Geode (2020.) and a finalist for both the New England Book Awards and the Massatuchetts Book Award. Her work has been featured in the New York Review of Books and the New Republic.
Leanne Shapton has made a career in artistry, writing, and publicity. Her work has appeared on the book covers of Women in Clothes and her own Swimming Studies, which won the 2012 National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography. Shapton currently resides in New York City and works as an art editor for the New York Review of Books.

Hip-hop duo Atmosphere has announced a 2023 North American tour that is scheduled to run throughout the summer, with a stop at Jones Beach. Atmosphere is scheduled to stop at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theatre in Wantagh on Aug. 26. The tour, dubbed Summertime 2023, starts in July and runs until the beginning of September.
Atmosphere members Slug and Ant
Atmosphere will be joined on their tour by Slightly Stoopid, Sublime with Rome, and The Movement. Summertime 2023 is in support of the duo’s latest album, So Many Other Realities Exist Simultaneously, out on May 5 through Rhymesayers Entertainment.
Rapper Slug and DJ/producer Ant are the voices of Atmosphere, originating in Minneapolis. Their career as a duo spans more than 25 years, with their debut studio album, Overcast! being released in 1997. In more than a decade since the release of their debut album, Atmosphere has released over two dozen studio albums, EPs, and collaborative side projects. Their success can be attributed to the honesty, humility, and vulnerability, of their music. In the early 2000s, Slug inadvertently coined the phrase “emo rap” in an interview, and publications now run with that tag when describing the band and similar groups.
Atmosphere’s latest work can arguably be called some of their most personal material to date. The opening track “Okay” is seemingly focused on comforting their listeners, a departure from their previous work. As such, So Many Other Realities marks one of the duo’s most innovative albums to date. While their previous work has focused on the parts of life that carry the most meaning, their new album highlights the fear and paranoia of a pandemic-ridden society. However, the darkness of the album is undercut with songs like “Still Life” which offers a more hopeful outlook.
Tickets for Atmosphere’s summer 2023 are now available. Pre-order / pre-save So Many Other Realities Exist Simultaneouslyhere.

John Wesley Seneca is debuted his new album, While Rome Burns, earlier this month. The album consists of 14 tracks, most of which are largely instrumental. The tracks were recorded during the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic from March to November of 2020, and the album’s release comes near the three-year anniversary of the world shutting down due to the pandemic.
Promotional artwork for While Rome Burns. Credit: Wes Seneca
A veteran Capital Region performer, Seneca goes by the alter ego “Wes.” An acoustic musician, he never intended to make an electronic album but said “circumstances” led to it. At first, it was just a way to pass time during the lockdown, but it became something bigger as the world “slowly started to open up.” The singer never intended to release an album, but upon hearing again in 2022, he thought he could “curate” some of the songs into something more. The music of WhileRome Burns is vastly different than what he normally makes, which is why he made the album under an assumed name.
“All for Me Gorg,” is a highlight of John Wesley Seneca’s new album. The track is a disco-inspired version of an Irish sailor’s song and lyrically quotes both “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and Shannon’s 1983 dance hit “Let the Music Play.” While the Covid-19 pandemic is certainly something many don’t want to remember, especially since it is on-going, While Rome Burns provides a glimpse into how music helped Wes Seneca cope with the most arguably some of the most disastrous months of the virus. WhileRome Burns is now available, however, the album currently isn’t available to download for free. Click here for more information.

Jerry Garcia Bobblehead games are once again on the schedule for August at Yankee Stadium. Yankee Stadium is extending the bobblehead games this year, starting on Garcia’s birthday, and continuing until Aug. 5.
This marks the second series of bobblehead games at the stadium featuring the late Grateful Dead frontman, the first of which was last year for what would’ve been Garcia’s 80th birthday.
The Rex Foundation will receive a portion of every ticket sold for the Jerry Garcia Bobblehead Games. Credit: Herb Greene
Jerry Garcia was an American musician from San Francisco and co-founder of the rock band Grateful Dead, which gained popularity during the counterculture of the 1960s. While he is considered by many to be the leader of the Grateful Dead, Garcia never embraced the title. The band’s career birthed 13 studio albums over nearly 30 years, officially breaking up shortly before Garcia’s death in 1995, although pre-recorded live albums continued to be released following his death. Garcia, along with his Grateful Dead bandmates, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
A portion of every ticket sold will support the Rex Foundation. Special tickets must be purchased for the Jerry Garcia Bobblehead Games at Yankee Stadium. Each Special Event Ticket includes a New York Yankees Jerry Garcia Bobblehead. The New York Yankees will verse the Tampa Bay Rays for the first two games on Aug. 1-2, and the Houston Astros for the next four games, from Aug. 3-6. Prices vary by date and seating selection.
