  • Jacob Shipley Gives His Last Respects to a Messy Breakup in New EP

    Troy-based singer-songwriter and actor Jacob Shipley is set to release his second EP, Last Respects, on May 26. The five-track record details Shipley’s experience in the experience of a messy breakup, and his memories from that relationship. Shipley’s second EP will be available via Apple Music, Spotify, and Bandcamp.

    Shipley, born and raised in Troy, is a man of many talents, so much so that he was able to have Broadway as a “backup plan.” As a theatre actor, Shipley had a featured role in the first actor/musician production of Godspell and a lead role in the first national tour of the Broadway musical Amazing Grace. In music, he began playing guitar on a nylon string when he was nine, and at 12, purchased a guitar of his own, a Breedlove, a concert-style guitar with a perfectly light and warm sound. While studying at Ithaca College of Musical Theatre, Shipley released Where Did You Come From, his first EP. The musician has performed for audiences at The Historic Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, The Bitter End, Rockwood Music Hall, and more, and his voice has been compared to Jeff Buckley, his wry cynicism to Phoebe Bridgers, and his poetic storytelling to Hozier.

    Last Respects opens with “Waiting” and what an opening track it is. The song describes the ways relationships can go “back and forth” and the conflicting emotions of “I don’t want to go, I don’t want to stay.” “Waiting” is certainly the highlight of the EP, but the rest of the tracks certainly match its level of quality. There couldn’t have been a better track to end the EP on than “Spain” in which Shipley takes audiences to what he likely considers his “happy place” whether it be figuratively or literally, reflecting on the positive memories of his relationship, before ultimately realizing he can’t cling to the happy memories forever. Last Respects is an EP you won’t want to miss and is sure to secure Shipley a long and successful music career.

  • Fourth Annual Free Dead in the Park Benefit Concert Set for May

    The 4th annual Free Dead in the Park Benefit Concert, presented by the Capitol Theatre and Rythm Premium Cannabis, is scheduled for May 16 at 4:30 p.m. at Central Park. The concert series, which began in 2018, supports Riverkeeper, a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection of the Hudson River and its tributaries. Stella follows in the footsteps of the Grateful Dead, taking the same stage at the Naumberg Bandshell in Central Park.

    Stella Blue’s Band has been performing for more than a decade, and is made up of Bill Bonacci (lead guitar, vocals,) Steve Liesman (rhythm guitar, vocals,) Greg Solomon (bass), Ken Aigen (keyboards), Ron Cohen (drums, vocals), and Amy Stahlin (vocals.) First formed in 2009 to recreate the experience of a Grateful Dead show, Stella was the first band chosen for residency at Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, which has become the band’s homebase. The band plays regularly at New York City venues such as the Brooklyn Bowl and The Cutting Room, among several other venues in the tri-state area.

    Free Dead in the Park began in 2018, after a fan obtained a $25 permit for Stella Blue’s Band to play in the bandshell to honor the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s concert at the venue. In the years since it has evolved into a fundraising event for Riverkeeper. “Free Dead in the Park is such an exciting and significant event each year because it connects music fans with the environment and gives them the opportunity to make a difference in their community by helping protect the Hudson River,’’ said Tracy Brown, president of Riverkeeper.

    Riverkeeper is a member-supported organization that preserves and restores the Hudson River from source to sea and safeguards drinking water supplies through advocacy rooted in community partnerships, science, and law. The non-profit originally began as the Hudson River Fisherman’s Association in 1966, when the Hudson River was dying from pollution and neglect. Today, Riverkeeper continues its fight, seeking out polluters and teaming with citizen scientists and activists to reclaim the Hudson River.

    The show will be produced by G4D Productions with support from Best Instrument Rentals. The event would not be possible without support from the NYC Parks Department, which has helped to make the concert a success. The show also has support from a group of committed private contributors like the Morgan Le Fay Dreams Foundation and Friends of Free Dead in the Park.

  • Regina Spektor Confirms Summer Tour Dates with Three Shows in New York

    Acclaimed musician Regina Spektor is going on a 2023 summer tour, which includes performances at three music venues in New York: the Kodak Center in Rochester on Aug. 1, SummerStage in Central Park on Aug. 24, and the West Hampton Beach Performing Arts (WHBAC) on Aug. 25.

    The tour comes a year after the release of Spektor’s latest studio album, Home, before and after. Additionally, the performer will make an appearance at Mikhail Baryshnikov’s 75th birthday celebration at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in Tivoli, New York, alongside Laurie Anderson, Diana Krall, and Kaoru Watanabe.

    Russian-Jewish-American singer, songwriter, and pianist Regina Spektor, whose genres range from Anti-folk, Indie-Pop, and alternative rock, was born in Moscow, Russia, and since moving to the United States, has made musical waves in New York. Spektor has received a sign on the Bronx Walk of Fame, and Mayor Bill Diblasio proclaimed June 11, 2019, as “Regina Spektor Day.” She has been making music for over 20 years, with her debut studio album, 11:11, being released in 2001, and 2022’s Home, before and after marked her eighth studio release.

    The album’s supporting single, “Up the Mountain,” has been praised by several media outlets, including the New York Times, which wrote, “It’s mystical and earthy, moving from tolling piano to implacable beat, with strings and horns ganging up.” Grammy-nominated Spektor first saw commercial success with the RIAA Gold-certified LP, Begin to Hope, which includes the singles “On the Radio,” “Better”, “Samson,” and “Fidelity,” which climbed the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

  • Sid Seth Drops Sizzling “Hopeless War,” More Music to Come

    Singer-songwriter Sid Seth has a new single “Hopeless War,” out now, and announced that more new music is coming. The new single, released via Earmilk, was accompanied by a music video in support. If “Hopeless War,” is any indication, Seth will have a long and successful career ahead of him.

    Sid Seth is originally from India and moved to New York City to pursue a career in music in 2018, studying at the Manhattan School of Music. His music is a combination of soul and pop, drawing inspiration from The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Boney M, and Abba, while his father introduced him to the rhythm and melodies of Bollywood, Hindustani Folk Music, and Indian Classical music. Seth’s enriching sound can be honorably compared to the likes of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Ella Fitzgerald.

    Since moving to New York City, Seth has performed at several music venues, including the Rockwood Music Hall, Parkside Lounge, the Bowery Electric, Breaking Sound, Feinstein’s 54 Below, and the Green Room, on top of multiple cities in India. Seth has received acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone India, Earmilk, Celeb Mix, Variance, and Atwood Magazine, and, with thousands of streams across his repertoire, we are likely to see much more of him in the future.

    The strength of “Hopeless War,” comes from its versatility. Almost everyone can relate to that feeling, whether it be in a romantic relationship, friendship, or even familial relationship, when something is just not working anymore, and you have to let each other go. Enough is enough. With Seth’s powerful lyrics, hopefully, anyone struggling with whatever situation they’re in can find the courage to do whatever they need to do. Because of this, it’s safe to assume future music by Seth, which has already been confirmed by the singer, will similarly resonate with audiences.

    Of his newest track, Sid wrote: “‘Hopeless War’ comes from a classic situation: a battle of ‘you did this, I did that.’ Both parties go crazy, and after a certain point in the argument, it doesn’t even make sense anymore. Someone takes the lead and is like, ‘Okay, let’s just end this, it’s pointless.’ It’s that scene. And after all that, it leaves you with silence and the question lingering ‘where do we go now?’

  • Tears for Fears Summer Tour includes shows at MSG, SPAC and Bethel Woods

    Tears for Fears are going on the road this summer for a 2023 North American tour, which includes stops at three music venues in New York. The iconic band will perform at Madison Square Garden (MSG) on June 26, then make their way over to Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) on July 2, followed by their last New York performance at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on July 5.

    The performances support Tears for Fears’ The Tipping Point Tour Part II, and they will be joined by special guest Cold War Kids.

    Tears for Fears, originating in Bath, Somerset, England, composes music by musicians Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal, and former members include Manny Elias and Ian Stanley. The band’s career spans over 40 years, with their first album, The Hurting, debuting in 1983, supported by their first single “Suffer the Hurting.” They have since released seven studio albums, most recently The Tipping Point in 2022, their first album since 2004’s Everybody Loves a Happy Ending. Their debut album birthed the hit “Mad World”, the band’s first international success, inspiring several cover versions, most recently by Demi Lovato on the singer’s 2021 album Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over. Tears for Fears has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and performed on countless sold-out shows.

  • Pixies will be Joined by Modest Mouse on the Third Leg of their North American Tour

    Indie rock kingpins Pixies will be joined by Modest Mouse for the third leg of their North American tour, which includes performances at three New York venues. The bands will perform twice at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City on Aug. 21 and 22, the Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown on Aug. 25, and the Artpark Amphitheater in Lewiston on Aug. 28. The upcoming tour is in support of Pixie’s latest studio album, Doggerel.

    Pixies originated in Boston, Massatuchetts, and consists of David Lovering, (drums, percussion, backing vocals) Black Francis, (lead and backing vocals, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar) Paz Lenchantin, (bass, violin, backing and lead vocals), and Joey Santiago (lead guitar, backing vocals.) They have been performing for over 30 years, and their debut album, Surfer Rosa, was released in 1988, supported by their lead single “Gigantic.” Over the course of their career, they have released a total of eight studio albums, most recently 2022’s Doggerel, which their upcoming tour supports. The band disbanded in 1993, and reunited in 2004, with their first release since reuniting being 2014’s Indie Cindy, their fifth studio album. They are known for being “one-of-a-kind” performers, due to their concerts having no pre-determined set lists, and whatever song plays next is what “feels right.”

    New Musical Express (NME) called Doggerel “the most inventive since their reunion nearly two decades ago.”

  • Frank Palangi’s New Single Proves Rock Won’t “Fall From Grace”

    Frank Palangi’s new single “Fall From Grace,” proves that the rock genre still has a place in the music business – as does Palangi. The rock singer has been performing for more than 10 years and continues to make noise in the music industry, “Fall From Grace,” being only his most recent track to hit music platforms. “Fall From Grace,” is sure to leave fans eager to hear more.

    Raised in Upstate New York, Palangi first hit the music scene in 2011 with his self-titled debut EP, and since then has had the opportunity to work with a number of music producers. Over the course of his more than decade-long career, he has released a total of five EPs, received Best In the Region for local Glens Falls and Albany areas and national unsigned-only competition finals, radio artist of the year (radio wigwam) and an LA Music Award single Nomination. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Palangi wasn’t discouraged, and his optimism shined through his music. Guitar World magazine said of the artist, “Palangi’s positivity extends beyond his music into the way he interacts with his fans.”

    Palangi stands out positively from artists today in a number of ways, and “Fall From Grace,” is living proof of that. Palangi’s newest single echoes the sounds of hit rock bands and some of his biggest inspirations such as Ozzy, Def Leppard, Megadeth, and Three Days Grace, just to name a few. “Fall From Grace” can have a subjective meaning to listeners, so almost anyone can resonate with it, one way or another. For some, it could be about a fall-out you had with some of your closest friends, who you thought would stick by you through anything, or for others, it could be about being turned down for a job you really wanted or desperately needed. Either way, “Fall From Grace” is likely going to go down as just one in a long list of hits by Palangi.

  • Telecom Debuts on the Music Scene with Captivating single “Ramon”

    New band Telecom, from Brooklyn-based musician Sean McVerry, has released their debut single, “Ramon” on March 21 and have plans to release more music soon. Telecom melds 60s brit-pop, late 2000s New York indie grit, and cheeky theatrics. McVerry has worked and toured with artists such as Karen O, Danger Mouse, and Aurora.

    Telecon comprises Andres Valbuena on drums, Zeno Pittarelli on guitar, Jonathan Sacca on bass, and several other Brooklyn musicians. Their founder, Sean McVerry, is a New York music scene veteran, and recently on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he won the show’s “instant songwriter” segment. Telecom has earned millions of streams on music platforms, and music has been featured on several television shows such as NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Adult Swim on Cartoon Network.

    Telecom’s debut single “Ramon” and its upcoming counterpart were co-produced and mixed by former DFA engineer Abe Seiferth at Brookly’s Transmitter Park studios. McVerry moved a free piano he found on Craigslist into the apartment, (nearly crushing himself to death) and the songs quickly came together. He started working on the songs in late 2020 in his home studio in Crown Heights, as a way to express his feelings about the Covid-19 pandemic. The songs provide different takes on the situation, with “Ramon” describing McVerry’s feelings of being trapped with his neighbors in their Brooklyn apartment building. Both songs remained dormant until a writing retreat with Pittarelli and Rahn in 2021, at which point Telecom was beginning to take form.

    If Telecom’s future music is anything like “Ramon,” the band is certain to have a long and successful career ahead of them. Upon listening to their debut single, audiences are sure to be eager for more by Telecom. McVerry truly found magic with the three artists that make up the group.

    McVerry said of Telecom’s Debut Single:

    ‘Ramon’ began with a free piano from Craigslist. After mining a ’70s drum break from my vinyl collection, I laid down the initial cassette tape demo of the song. The track thumps along a hypnotic groove, as the speaker romanticizes the cat in the courtyard, and the introspection that comes with isolation.

  • Fifth Annual Sound Mind Music Festival set for May 20 in Brooklyn

    Sound Mind Live has announced the fifth annual Sound Music Festival for Mental Health will take place on Saturday, May 20, between Irving Ave and Wyckoff Ave in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The free event, which starts at 12 p.m., will feature a number of performers including Iron & Wine, Hiss Golden Messenger, Langhorne Slim, Kamauu, and Pom Pom Squad, and includes DJ sets from House of Yes, Food by Smorgsaburg, Yoga and Sound, Bath Sessions, and more.

    BetterHelp is partnering with Sound Mind Live for this year’s Sound Music Festival

    For this year’s festival, the world’s largest therapy platform, BetterHelp, is partnering with Sound Mind Live to provide a month of free therapy for their combined communities.

    Research shows that since the pandemic, more people have contemplated self-harm, with one in four youth having considered suicide, and the fall out of post-pandemic depression is expected to last 3-5 years. The upcoming Sound Mind Music Festival hopes to bring about deeper community connections for healing and elevate conversations and resources that can help those in need find affordable resources sooner.

    “Over the past several years the world recognized that mental health issues impact us all in one form
    or another,” Executive Director of Sound Mind Live Chris Bullard says.

  • Barry Manilow Returns to Radio City Music Hall for 5 Night Concert Series

    On March 27, MSG Entertainment and The Bowery Presents announced that singer-songwriter Barry Manilow is returning to Radio City Music Hall for the first time since 2012, with a five-night concert series beginning Wednesday, May 31, and concluding Sunday, June 4. Beginning at 8 p.m. each night, these shows will mark the 35-39th lifetime performances by Manilow at Radio City.

    Born in Brooklyn, the Grammy, Tony, and Emmy Award-winning Manilow has a career that spans nearly 50 years, having sold more than 85 million records worldwide, with his self-titled debut album being released in 1973, supported by his debut single “Could It Be Magic.” Throughout his five-night concert series at Radio City, Manilow will perform a number of his hits, including “Mandy,” “I Write the Songs,” “Looks Like We Made It,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” and “Copacabana (At the Copa).” Manilow has released 50 top-40 singles and is ranked as the number one Adult Contemporary artist of all time, according to Billboard and R&R magazines.
