On Saturday, October 29th, the World Music Institute present Malian musician and GRAMMY Award winner Oumou Sangaré for an incredible one-night-only performance at the world-famous Apollo in Harlem. Being one of West Africa’s most celebrated vocalists, Sangaré infuses her music with traditional African percussion, distinctive vocals, and progressive social criticism. Thus, creating a unique sound that has propelled her onto the international stage.
In her Apollo debut, Oumou Sangaré, “The Songbird of Wassoulou,” will perform music that spans traditional Wassoulou music. She will do this by using contemporary sounds coming out of Africa as well as songs from her recent critically acclaimed album, Timbuktu.
We’re thrilled to have Oumou, make her Apollo debut during our Next Movement season. Over the past eight decades the Apollo has amplified Black voices and used its platforms to create an intersection of art and activism, so having Oumou perform a range of music from Wassoulou music to contemporary sounds is exactly the kind of artistic conversation that we champion.

Oumou Sangaré is considered an ambassador of Wassoulou, she is praised for being an activist, businesswoman and global icon. Throughout the world, her music has been inspired by the music and traditional dances of the region. She does this by writing and composing her songs which often include social criticism, especially concerning women’s low status in society.
Similar to legendary performers like Grace Jones, Nina Simone, and Aretha Franklin, Oumou Sangaré has been praised by stars including Beyoncé and Alicia Keys for her powerful voice and unwavering commitment to the betterment of women. Sangaré infuses her music with traditional African percussion, distinctive vocals, and progressive social criticism, creating a unique sound that has propelled her career.

NYC’s Electric Zoo has just announced its star-studded lineup for official afterparties you don’t want to miss. There will be 12 Afterparties over the course of four days including Tchami, Camelphat, Martin Garrix, CloZee, Loco Dice, and more to come.
On September 2 through the 4, NYC’s premiere EDM festival Electric Zoo will upgrade Randall’s Island Park into a futuristic, tech-driven paradise. The festival features some highly anticipated sets from headliners like Porter Robinson, CloZee, and Armin Van Buuren across four stages. Thus, highlighting both rare performances from legacy acts and the biggest breakthrough artists.

From August 19-21, the Lake George BBQ & Music Festival will host 18 bands over the course of three days for audiences to enjoy. The festival includes live music across two stages, barbeque from local vendors, an art marketplace, and activities for kids and families.
The festival kicks off with acoustic solo act Rich Ortiz beginning at 3:15 P.M. on Aug. 19 at the Pavillion Stage. The first day includes a wide array of genres and acts including blues band Sunny Bleau, country artist Jennie Angel, indie pop act Thanks!, and blues-rock group Miller and the Other Sinners.
Saturday, Aug. 20, begins with a kids show from folk and americana artist Deb Cavanaugh from 12:15 P.M. to 12:45 P.M. The George Boone Band will take the spotlight next, with a set of blues music. Attendees can also enjoy the talents of blues group Amy Ryan Band, rock jammers eberwine, roots duo Northern Borne, and more. Sly Fox and the Hustlers will close out the full day of concerts with their blues-rock sound from 8-9 P.M. on the main stage.
Opening up the main stage for the last day of festivities is blues duo Mark & Jill at 12:15 P.M. on Sunday, Aug. 21. Folk and traditional act Reese Fulmer will open the Pavillion Stage starting at 1:10 P.M. Deb Cavanaugh will also return to the festival with Dandelion Wine for a folk performance. Muddy Ruckus, a duo who fuses indie, punk, and blues together, will entertain audiences next. Blues Hall of Famer, Michael Charles, will close out the main stage and the entire festival with a memorable performance drawing from his 39 years of original music.

The annual Chenango Blues Festival will return for its 29th year on August 19 and August 20. The festival features Blues Hall of Fame inductee and multiple Grammy-winning guitarist Jimmie Vaughan, who returns after last year’s cancellation.
The Chenango Blues Festival is a family-friendly event open to all at the County Fairgrounds in Norwich. The Friday performances will kick off with the Rock N’ Roll band the Hi-Jivers from 5:30 pm to 6:45 pm. Canadian singer Angel Forrest takes the stage next, with an impressive career spanning over three decades. To close out the first day of the festival, blues rocker Popa Chubby will perform. The parking gate opens at 4 pm and the festival gate at 5 pm with music starting at 5:30 pm.
On Saturday, at the Infield Stage, festival gates open at 11:00 am with Massachusetts-based Misty Blues playing at 11:30 am. Duo Annika Chambers band will be performing next bringing blues fused with influences of gospel music. Altered Five will follow from 2:45 pm to 4:00 pm and then fest favorite Nick Moss returns from 5:00 pm to 6:15 pm. To close out Saturday’s Infield Stage performances, Jimmie Vaughan will perform an exciting set of songs from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
The Chenango Blues Festival’s Tier Pet Tent Stage also includes even more performances on Saturday. The first act, Corey Harris and Cajun fiddler Cedric Watson, will open the stage from 1:45 pm to 2: 45 pm. Americana and blues band EG Kight Trio will play next followed by Los Angeles-based Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps. The tent stage, and the entire festival, will be closed out in style by the returning Grammy-nominated band Southern Avenue, who average 150 shows in a typical year.
Attendees of the festival can enjoy food from different vendors, and on-site camping in addition to the great live music. The Chenango Blues Association also presents a series of free shows in East Park every Thursday in July and August and will feature the Mike Zito Big Band on August 18. This show is the unofficial kickoff to Blues Fest weekend. Attendees of the Blues Fest can spend the day exploring the area before heading to the fairgrounds for the concert and the official start on August 19.

On September 10 and 11, AFROPUNK Festival returns with headliners The Roots and Burna Boy. This fall homecoming marks the first time the fest has come back to Brooklyn since 2019.
AFROPUNK began as a single-day event in Brooklyn in 2004 before evolving into a worldwide phenomenon. This year’s lineup brings some of the most exciting artists to Commodore Barry Park for two days of celebration.
The legendary hip-hop band The Roots will headline night one. Their expansive set will cover decades of the bands’ music as they celebrate 30 years together. On the night of the 11th, Burna Boy will close the festival and promote his upcoming album Love, Damini.
Other performers include TDE rhymer Isaiah Rashad, Lucky Daye, Freddie Gibbs, Tierra Whack, Earl Sweatshirt, and many more. AFROPUNK also welcomes Brooklyn-based artists to the lineup, including rapper Rodney Chrome, R&B artist Alex Mali, and hip-hop artist Talia Goddess.
AFROPUNK aims to highlight the diverse talent and depth of the Brooklyn Black music community. Audiences can expect performances from various genres and origins including rock, R&B, AfroBeats, and more.
The festival offers more entertainment than just a place to enjoy live music. Attendees will be able to peruse local foods from NYC chefs and food trucks at AFROPUNK’s Bites ‘n Beats. The Spinthrift Market will also operate, providing event goers with makers and curators from the area.

The Ticonderoga Festival Guild is kicking off its 42nd season of free summer concerts and children’s programs for all to enjoy beginning on July 6.
The children’s program, “Art Trek” will run every Wednesday starting at 10:15 am at the Knights of Columbus Pavilion, with Michael Caduto opening. The children’s concerts will include a wide variety of entertainment from professional artists, including opera, theater, music, stories, dancing, unicycling, fire-eating, and juggling.
The summer concert series, known as “Summer In The Park,” will begin on Tuesday nights at 7 pm at the pavilion starting off with the ADK Jazz Repertoire Ensemble on July 12. Musicians from genres such as bluegrass, jazz, country, folk, Americana, Irish, and rock will also be putting on exciting performances for audiences to relax and enjoy throughout the summer.
The Ticonderoga Festival Guild was established in 1980 as a non-profit organization that aims to showcase and advance performing arts in the town. The guild offers a diverse program in the region year-round for the community to take part in.
The Ticonderoga Festival Guild has provided programming for decades in the area which lies right between Lake George and Lake Champlain. Ticonderoga is well-known for its fort of the same name, which was prominent during the French and Indian War, and the Revolutionary War during the Saratoga Campaign. Ticonderoga in its entirety has a rich history and is a beautiful place to visit.

After a two-year hiatus, Northwest Jazz Festival returns celebrating 20 years in Historic Lewiston. This year the festival will highlight local, international, and North American jazz artists including Sally Terrell, John di Martino, Stacey Kent, and more.

The last Northwest Jazz Festival took place in 2019 with a two-year break due to NYS (New York State) COVID-19 restrictions. In 2021 there was not a full festival, however, local musicians were hired to perform in Lewiston. This year’s event brings live music to Center Street with a selection of the region’s finest food and beverage vendors including local wineries, distilleries, and breweries.

Having Juno Award winner, the Allison Au Quartet from Canada is a chance to welcome our Canadian fans back to the festival. Inclusion Festival returns for 2022, from July 15-17 at Kempton Fairgrounds in Kempton, PA with daily programming from 11am to 11pm. The festival features various activities, music, workshops, camping and art, which are accessible experience for all ages and abilities.

Debuted in 2018, Inclusion Festival became the nation’s first festival designed to accommodate disabled people. Since then, the festival has grown to spread inclusion as a state of mind through year-round events, experiences, consultation and training, as well as an online magazine. This year’s festival will offer virtual components to increase accessibility for those unable to attend the live event.

After a multi-year hiatus, the Blues Ignition Band will start up opening day performances for the 2022 New York State Blues Festival from Saturday June 16 to 18.
The free event, which reaches its 30th anniversary this year, will take place at Chevy Court inside the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

The Blues Ignition Band is part of the festival’s youth development program, along with the K.J. James Memorial Scholarship and Blues In The Schools. Blues Ignition offers kids 18 and younger the opportunity to audition for spots in the group, and those selected are led by an instructor heading up to the day of their performance.
The Blues Ignition Band’s leader in 2022 band is Reggie Seigler, the coordinator of JAMS. (Joined Artists, Musicians, Singers, Inc.) A 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Syracuse, JAMS’ mission “is to enhance the local arts scene through the offerings of diverse creative artists.” Seigler is also a columnist for The Stand, a publication which covers news and current events in Syracuse’s South Side.
