  • Drummer Jay Lane, a Man of Many Talents, Adds to His Resume

San Francisco Bay Area drummer/musician Jay Lane gets antsy when he’s not on the road with one of the many bands of which he is a part. So it was not difficult to deduce that Lane, 57, had a tough time adapting to pandemic life, when the world shut down, venues closed their doors and bands put touring aside as we tried to get COVID-19 under control.

And just like so many other musicians trying to adapt to a temporary but new way of life, Lane had to figure out how to keep himself from going insane while essentially being in lockdown. Enter the Blue Bear School of Music, the Bay Area’s “preeminent school rock, blues, jazz, folk and pop music,” as described on its website. Lane, who is a member of Primus, Bob Weir and Wolf Brothers and countless other Grateful Dead associated acts, decided to put his expertise to use by providing online drumming lessons.

“I haven’t been involved in too much outreach or giving lessons in a long time,” Lane said in a recent telephone interview with NYS Music. “I’ve been doing this now for a few months and I love it. I actually used to take lessons as a child at Blue Bear. I felt I wanted to give back to kids and people of all ages.”

Currently, Lane said he is only giving online live video lessons, but said he has no idea what the future holds once COVID is in the rearview. Blue Bear, a nonprofit organization,  was founded in 1971 by rock band Wolfgang & Strauss, two brothers who set up shop in San Francisco seeking to build lives. Currently, Blue Bear has about 850 enrollees each quarter, as it aims to help musicians of all skill levels find their calling.

Prior to his time at Blue Bear, Lane said he had never played in an ensemble before, and that experience gave him the desire to learn as many styles of drumming as he could. How else would he so easily transition to the hard psychedelic rock that Primus plays, to the experimental and free flowing sound that the Grateful Dead made famous?

“There’s nothing like the experience (of playing in an ensemble,” Lane said. “That’s what I did as a kid, oon  Port Mason, the smell of the rehearsal room was palpable, especially with the other kids.”

Lane was ecstatic when discussing how the country has opened up recently, allowing for live music and other gatherings. Lane, who lives in a condo in the Bay Area, said he loved spending extended time with his family, but added that he was raised on the road, and at times he became very restless without the daily grind of getting ready to play a different show each night.

On March 30, Bob Weir and Wolf Bros bring their cowboy folk/americana act to the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse for an evening of new songs, and their unique take on the Grateful Dead’s repertoire. They follow up the Central New York show with a pair at Radio City Music Hall over April 2-3. These shows will feature several unannounced special guests, including The Wolfpack, which consists of a dedicated strings section.

Weir, who played rhythm guitar with the Dead for 50 years, formed Wolf Bros a few years back and added Lane rather quickly. Lane and Weir have extensive history together including stints together in RatDog and Furthur, just to name a few, and Lane said he looks up to Weir on many levels.

“Bob, he really likes to paint with a long brush,” Lane said with a chuckle. “He does so many things that are not considered the norm, like turning all the stage monitors down at his shows so that he can hear what the audience hears and adapt to it. He’s such a dear, sweet friend to me and he is incredibly generous. His big thing is to gain experience by playing with anyone he can. He’s toying with the idea of performing a concerto, or playing with a symphony, to understand that dynamic. The guy has done everything you can do in rock music, yet he’s still pushing forward toward new and exciting ideas and collaborations.”

Lane couldn’t speak more highly about Weir’s impact on him.

“He constantly challenged me to get better and change up my concepts,” Lane added.

As for returning to the road, Lane said he cannot wait to be doing what he does best, providing the backbeat for several bands.

“COVID felt like a real prison cell,” he said. “After a while I think I began learning to be OK with it, like everyone else, but it’s been hard to make music through all this. Now I just need to find my relevance, my purpose again.”

Lane said he has gotten much better providing lessons online, which was a struggle at first because he still prefers older technology in many ways.

If you’re interested in seeing Lane perform with Wolf Bros in Syracuse, tickets are still available.

  • Beak and Skiff Apple Orchards in LaFayette Announce 2022 Summer Concert Schedule

Just 15 minutes south of Syracuse is the small town of Lafayette, home to the Onondaga Reservation amid rolling hills and valleys. You’ll find a number of apple orchards in this area as well, including Beak and Skiff, whose concert series for Summer 2022 schedule features The Wood Brothers, Death Cab for Cutie, Primus, The War on Drugs and many more.

    beak and skiff

Beak and Skiff is a family owned orchard for five generations, dating back to 1911 when George Skiff, an onion farmer on the North Side of Syracuse, and Andrew Beak, a dairy farmer, met at the farmers market and decided to join forces and enter the emerging apple business. After finding a hillside area along Route 20 that provided the perfect conditions for growing apples, they started planting that very year.

In the 1920s, Beak and Skiff began selling apples to groceries stores via wholesale, and by the late 1970s, began making apples cider, the same year they opened Apple Hill Country Store. In the last 20 years, they have branched out again by creating the 1911 Established line of Hard Ciders, and created 1911 Spirits, the first Onondaga County brand to hold a distillery license and the first to produce gin.

    Beak and Skiff 2022 schedule

Bringing a summer concert series to Beak and Skiff is DSP Shows, based in Ithaca, NY and Northampton, MA, is one of the leading independent concert promoters in America. • Comedy finds a home in CNY at Funk n Waffles

Central New York Comedy has found a home at Funk n Waffles in Syracuse. For the past few months, NYC comedian Brian Enck has put together well-received and hilarious shows in Downtown Syracuse, in a music venue of all places.

Brian is a nationally touring comedian who’s been in dozens of comedy fests, hosted award shows, podcasts and anything else you can think of. But his new home is here in Syracuse and his new favorite show is the monthly at Funk & Waffles.

Honestly I didn’t think I’d be able to get them. To be real, Funk & Waffles was my target college and my grades were not good enough. They’re known for being this very cool music venue with amazing bands coming through and I walk up with my dumb face and go ‘Hey how about I bring you some comedians?’ We talked for a few weeks, tweaked out the details till we made it work.  We’ve had two of the past three shows sold out, and the comics love the space, so it must’ve been the right call.

    Brian Enck

Enck, originally from Webster, outside of Rochester, moved to NYC once he started getting paid gigs freshman year of college in 2010. For over a decade Brian made stand up not just his passion but his career drawing on his influences like Dave Chappelle, Monty Python, Lenny Bruce, Patton Oswalt, Maria Bamford and others. “I moved from Upstate because there wasn’t a scene around here, it was just angry recently divorced 50 year olds yelling about their ex wives and giving me a hard time because I was working out jokes.” Now the whole state has a great network of talented comics in well run rooms. From the clubs, to bar shows, to little pop up rooms, or monthlies in a place that had a heavy metal band the night before it’s like a renaissance for the New York comedy.” Brian also spent his last few years as a comedy producer for a TV Network. “I loved being able to work on scripts, talk out characters with actors, and making a budget work with the accountants, actually no that part sucked but the rest was fun.”

Brian’s shows have had the same outline grab the funniest people and turn on the microphone.

Because of COVID, he would take some time to work remotely and spend time with his family. That summer Brian met his now wife and made the move from Brooklyn to Syracuse and hasn’t looked back.

With a goal of drawing NYC comedians north, and Rochester, Buffalo and Albany each having ripe comedy centers, Syracuse fits right in the middle of that I-90 corridor and would benefit CNY comedy fans in need. Turning Syracuse into a city that is great for comedy is Enck’s plan, just as Madison, WI is great for comedy just because it decided to be; there is no reason Syracuse can’t be the same, given how close it is to NYC.

Though Brian thought choosing a music venue was going to be a long shot, it has worked out perfectly for a comedy series. Every comedian wants to be a musician and vice versa, to quote Seinfeld “Musicians and Comedians are like Chimps and Orangutans, we know we have something in common we just can’t place it.”

Working with the clubs, comedians, and other venues the next plan is for a Central New York comedy festival. With each city hosting comics from all over in the great rooms that already exist here and now.

    May 11th

  • Cheat Codes returns to Syracuse since 2017 for “The HellRaisers Tour” of 2022

EDM Trio Cheat Codes returned to Syracuse for the first time since their show at the New York State Fair back in 2017 for the Chevy Court lineup. The Westcott Theater was a perfect venue and created an atmosphere for people to rave and move around in. With the in house bar, the venue and show all together was great place to be in Syracuse on Sunday, February 6.

Juicebox, specializing in mashups and dubstep, played a remix of songs such as “Sweater Weather” by The Neighborhood, “Magic (feat. Tim Morrison) (Bingo Players Extended Edit)” by Mystique and was the first opener at The Westcott, part of the ‘Hellraisers’ tour. Followed by MADDS, a DJ and producer also opened for the trio with a mix of songs including remixes of “The Hum” by Briz DJ, and “Roses – Imanbek Remix” by SAINT JHN.

Cheat Codes opened with their song with Daniel Blume – “Who’s Got Your Love” // Cheat Codes – ‘Balenciaga’ remix. Followed by one of their top hits “Sex” with a remix including “Way 2 Sexy” by Drake and “Lose Control” by Kremerk. The group is comprised of Trevor Dahl, Matthew Russell, Kevi Ford who performed their 18th show on the ‘Hellraisers Tour’ in Syracuse. The group was founded back in Los Angeles in 2014 where their journey began. Since then they have toured across the world and performed at festivals and shows following a genre of EDM/POP.

Towards the end of the show, the trio pulled out one of their top hits, “No Promises” with Demi Lovato. This song later became one of their first U.S. Top 40 as well as a certified platinum in the U.S, Australia and all across Europe. Trevor Dahl who is the groups lead singer engaged with the crowd not only within this song but the entire show. Leaning into fans, throwing water into the crowd, even taking a few selfies with the crowd in the front. Not only was the crowd entertained with this show but CheatCodes puts on a good show and they sure as hell look like they’re having fun while they do it.

  • Westcott Theater has “Five on it” with The Luniz at It’s a Party Fest 2/18

Sunday February 18 at the Westcott Theater is round two of “It’s a party fest” to keep the 2022 Winter festivals rolling. The event will be hosted by actor & artist JT Campos. He is featured on the NETFLIX series “Queen of the South” and has been a guest on BREAL’ TV’s show Smokebox. For the first time ever in Upstate New York the Luniz will be performing their hit song ” I got 5 on it”.

The 1995 song “I got Five on It” by rap duo Luniz was released more than two decades ago and is still an anthem among the cannabis culture. On Christmas 2019 Academy award winner Jordan Peele dropped the trailer for “Us” that resurged the songs popularity through a new horror movie.

It’s a Party Fest host & actor JT Campos told BREAL on his show that he when he reads a script he likes to vibe out and listen to music in the background. Westcott Theater will have that vibe on 2/18.

I’m trying to get some stories told. Ya know? I’ts about telling your stories and sharing them, invigorating & motivating people to inspire them to tell their story
