On August 4, Playhouse Stage Company continues its Summer 2022 season with an engaging musical, The Wedding Singer, based on the hit Adam Sandler movie of the same name at Park Playhouse.

The show, performed by Playhouse Stage Academy students, will run at Park Playhouse from August 4 to 20, Tuesday through Saturday, beginning at 8 pm. Earlier in the season, audiences enjoyed Disney’s The Jungle Book Kids at the iconic Cohoes Music Hall and can look forward to the show Pete (her) Pan coming the last week of August at the venue.

Playhouse Stage Company recently undertook the responsibility of managing Cohoes Music Hall in 2020 but originally began summer productions in Washington Park in Albany in 1989. After drawing large crowds with free, outdoor programming, the amphitheater was built facing the lake to accommodate 1,500 people.

Attendees at the Park Playhouse venue for the upcoming The Wedding Singer show can enjoy for free on the lawn, or purchase tickets closer to the stage. The rest of the Summer 2020 Park Playhouse season is sure to entertain audience members of all ages.

Playhouse Stage Company also recently announced its 35th season of musical theatre, including shows such as Frozen Jr., Assassins, Something Rotten, The Secret Garden, and many more. • Beach-Hop Artist, Cully, Quenches Summer Thirst on ‘Aquafina’

The best summers are commemorated with a great soundtrack. Often times the memory is triggered by what songs were playing during the late night strolls, road trips and summer parties. Traveling beach-hop artist, Cully, looks to capture this very essence with his latest single, “Aquafina.” A snazzy, laid-back record, “Aquafina” has all the feels of a staple summer hangout song, with its infectious chorus, Cully’s effortless flow and quick-witted rhymes.

If Cully’s style seems more refined than others, it’s because he’s been working on it nearly all of his life. The musical seed was planted at just two-days-old when he attended his first music festival with his mother and father. An intoxicated onlooker proclaimed him “the smallest baby” they’d ever seen.

Yo I was Frontin’ on a beach like I was lying in the sand. And I was trying to keep the peace and now she crying in her hands.

Developing an early knack for free-styling, Cully would hone his skills at his catholic elementary school playground (which in reality was just a parking lot) about the strife of a 10-year-old. No one could really beat-box yet, so he did it mostly a-cappella. Why a pasty 10-year-old attending catholic school was remotely talented at free-styling is anyone’s guess.

His high school years saw him for a rap trio with friends Patio and Sammy V. Their group, Tribe Style, earned thousands of views on Youtube. Cully’s musical journey saw him earn a a B.A. in Music Industry in 2017. While in university in upstate New York he met friend and frequent collaborator MC Righteous and joined Professor Joe Pignato’s avant-garde jazz troupe, Bright Dog Red, for two albums on Ropeadope Records. Cully has now come full- circle, as he quenches his musical thirst with “Aquafina,” as this beachy bop is a sleeper hit waiting to catch a wave.

“Aquafina” is also getting the splattered color vinyl treatment. Four remixes of “Aquafina,” produced by a slew of Cully’s college buddies who are successful musicians in their own right, will also be featured on the vinyl as well as released digitally.

Additionally, “Aquafina’s” upcoming video — set to drop on August 5 on Cully’s Youtube channel — is executively produced by Cully and co-directed by Salvatore Rubino (whose worked with the likes of Dom Kennedy, Smoke DZA, Cozz) and Dave Prokopec (Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller), channels a classic California aura with a ’62 Impala strolling down the Pacific Coast, chipped toothed model in tow.

  • Basilica Hudson Celebrates Regional Creativity with Jupiter Nights

Basilica Hudson, the internationally-renowned nonprofit arts center co-founded by musician Melissa Auf der Maur and filmmaker Tony Stone, is spotlighting area musicians, DJs, spoken word, visual artists and more with Jupiter Nights, a new weekly series taking place in its recently-renovated Gallery Building.

“In astrology, Jupiter is the planet that rules Thursdays and also the planet of expansion,” says Auf der Maur. “Our Jupiter Nights are a gathering place and performance space where local creatives can showcase their talents, while also connecting with like-minded explorers in their own and other artistic disciplines. With the recent expansion of our Gallery Building, they present the first opportunity for year-round weekly programming here at Basilica Hudson. In their intimacy and frequency, they also offer a wonderful counterbalance to our large-scale seasonal events like 24-Hour Drone and Basilica SoundScape.”

    Peter Galgani, Cozy Oaks Productions

Music, both live performances and DJ sets, are very much the anchor of Basilica Hudson’s Jupiter Nights, along with poetry and storytelling, visual art and even cuisine.

    Peter Galgani, Cozy Oaks Productions

The novel series kicked off May 5 with lovers x Navaja El Filo Tropical, an evening of Salsa, Cumbia, Ranchera, Reggaeton, Guaracha and Danzón music featuring artists from NYC, Mexico and Hudson. The night also boasted DJ sets by Adrian Is Hungry, Laura Se Fue and Sonido Talacha of the Barrio Collective, along with lovers, the duo of Hudson’s own DJ Uncle Rudy and Davon. This was complemented by a poetry reading by O Zotique and food by Casa Latina Pupusas Y Mas, a family-owned Hudson restaurant featuring authentic cuisine from El Salvador and Mexico. Murals made by local youth during a spray paint workshop led by Super Stories were also on display.

Avant-garde jazz was featured during a June 9 event produced by Melodius Thunk, a partnership between local artists and musicians Reggie Madison and Tshidi Matale. This evening featured the Zwelakhe-Duma Bell le Pere Trio and a DJ set from Fulathela, AKA Mike Mosby. Ambient soundscapes and edge-pushing audio hijinks were the focus of the July 21 event headlined by claire rousay and Matchless (Whitney Johnson). The first season of Jupiter Nights concludes tonight, July 28, with performances by a trio of singer-songwriters Emily Ritz, Jackie West and Shana Falana.

    Peter Galgani, Cozy Oaks Productions

Basilica Hudson’s Jupiter Nights will be on hiatus in August but return September 15 according to Allison Young, who co-curates the series with Sam Hillmer.

Jupiter Nights has brought a heightened localized focus to both our curatorial vision and community presence,” adds Young. “It has been met with a very positive response from folks all across the Hudson Valley. It is bringing in both first timers and returning visitors, ones who are delighted to have a unique performance space that they can patronize weekly for the best in music and other creative forms.”

    Peter Galgani, Cozy Oaks Productions

Young continues: “Come September, we will continue our mission to showcase a different style of music each week, complemented with new gallery openings by local artists, spoken word and some of the finest food that the restaurant-rich Hudson Valley has to offer.”

Doors open at 7 PM and performances begins at 8 PM Thursdays at Basilica Hudson, 110 South Front Street, Hudson.  Updates on events and the announcement of the coming Fall schedule can be found at the series’ webpage.

  • eberwine closes out July with DeadPhish weekend

Buffalo-based fusion rock quintet eberwine will celebrate the music of the Grateful Dead and Phish this weekend. The band will play two sets each night, including one set of original music featuring songs from the project’s forthcoming studio album One Vision. The weekend takes the band to the Riverboat Bar in Alexandria Bay on July 29, Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs on July 30, and Flour City Station in Rochester for a brunch set on July 31.

The three-show run will highlight the band’s collective passion for the music of the two jam giants.  “Everyone in the band grew up on the Dead and Phish,” noted lead guitarist and frontman Todd Eberwine. “We’re looking forward to crafting sets that intermingle the two bands. So much of the bands’ respective histories are rooted in setlists that mixing their catalogs is exciting in an artistic and energetic way.”

eberwine will be joined in Saratoga Springs by Albany-based genre-bending improv quartet Hilltop, who will celebrate the music of the String Cheese Incident. Eberwine recently released Live at the Strand across all streaming platforms including Bandcamp and Spotify.

Known for innovative jams, soulful lyrics, and high-energy shows, eberwine is fronted by guitarist Todd Eberwine (Dive House Union, Todd Eberwine Band, Soul Roach). The five-piece pulls musicians from the Buffalo music scene into a Western New York supergroup featuring Aaron Ziolkowski (Little Mountain Band), Jay Race (Dead Alliance Buffalo), Scott Molloy (Lazlo Hollyfeld, BEU) and Paul Zabrycki (Dead Buffalo Alliance). For those who haven’t checked out the band, according to Eberwine, they can “expect plenty of hooks and plenty  of jams that range from a dance party to psychedelia.” More information about show details and tickets can be found through the band’s website at www.eberwineband.com.

  • First-Ever Wild In The Trees Music & Skate Festival Announced in Lake George

The first-ever Wild In The Trees Music and Skate Festival hosted by Mirth Films will happen from October 1-2  on the grounds of the Lake George Skate Plaza in Lake George.

    Wild In The Trees

The musical artists range from punk and jam bands to alternative rock and feature well-known artists like Annie in the Water, Glass Pony, Neon Avenue, El Modernist, and more. Also included during the two-day festival is a skateboarding competition at the Lake George Skate Plaza, with competitions including a spot-based jam session, best trick, high ollie, game of S.K.A.T.E, and Skate -or- Dice.

The festival was born as a way to pay homage to all efforts made to raise money to build the Lake George Skate Plaza while embracing all the local talent. The skate plaza came about in 2008 when local skateboarders brought to the attention of the town the need to have a skate park. Through town board meetings and the creation of a skateboard committee, the town came together and raised over $100,000.

By 2014, the park was designed with oversight from the local skaters, and in 2015 it was finally done. The Lake George Skate Plaza attracts skateboarders from all across the northeast and beyond each year and gives them a safe place to skate and have fun without getting into trouble.

  • Kitchen Dwellers and Daniel Donato Tour Arrives at Putnam Place in October

Kitchen Dwellers and Daniel Donato announced their ‘Galaxy Grass x Cosmic Country Fall Tour’ which will stop at Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs on October 29th. This marks the only New York date of the 22-date tour, which kicks off in St. Louis, MO on October 5 and will continue throughout the Midwest, Southeast and Northeast, wrapping up on November 5 in St. Paul, MN.

Kitchen Dwellers twist bluegrass, folk, and rock through homegrown stories, rich mythology, American west wanderlust, and psychedelic hues. The Montana quartet consists of Shawn Swain [Mandolin], Torrin Daniels [banjo], Joe Funk [upright bass], and Max Davies [acoustic guitar]. They have captivated audiences in a few festivals including Northwest String Summit and performed alongside bands such as Railroad Earth and more. They’ve released two albums and a live record and came back with their third full-length album, Wise Rive.

    Kitchen Dwellers by Ed Coyle

Daniel Donato is a Nashville based American country music guitarist. Involving a creative energy, he distilled his life lessons into his debut album, A Young Man’s Country. Incubated to the sounds of the Dead, educated by some of Nashville’s finest players, and having more than 2,000 shows under his belt and a social media presence, Daniel Donato is a millennial creative fire. He’s been dabbling in professional music since the age of 14 and yet he’s just getting started.

    Daniel Donato

Daniel’s playing immediately struck me as something unique and special, and his band as a whole is a full-blown psychedelic hoss. Besides the obvious stylistic musical connections between ‘galaxy-grass’ and ‘cosmic country’, it was immediately apparent that our bands and fans have similar ideals and core values when it comes to life and playing music. Some people you just instantly click with, and this is one of those times. And now we’re taking the whole damn circus on the road. Come see us this fall.

  • In Focus: Ballyhoo! at Alive at 5

On Thursday, July 21, 2022, Albany’s 6th installment of Alive at 5 kicked off with The E-Block and Souly Had, opening up for headliners, Ballyhoo!. Facing an intense heat wave throughout the week in Albany, the show was moved to the Corning Boat Launch to shield guests from the sun.

Souly Had at Alive at 5

The E-Block is an upstate NY indie band composed of 5 musicians. They got their start around 2017 after playing in the garage of saxophonist, James Soren. The E-Block has been been popping up around the Capital Region the last few years; playing at local bars, SUNY Albany, and the Laundromat. They are a growing band that now can add Alive at 5 to their resumé.

Souly Had is an r&b and hip hop artist also from the Capital Region. He went from doing covers of Amy Winehouse songs to signing a deal with Island Records in 2019. Souly Had’s single “Crush” did well on streaming platforms and “Maybe Not” took off on Tiktok. Both The E-Block and Souly Had have a collaborative performance at the Lost & Found on July 23rd.

Left: Guitarist Sebastian Right: Bassist Nick Lucera

The pop reggae rock group Ballyhoo! from Aberdeen, MD seemingly brought the heat with them on stage. With their beach-rock style, they made the middle aged crowd feel like they were on the boardwalk. With temperatures in the mid 90s, it was reasonable to see the crowd spaced out and enjoying the vibe. The vocals were not that great for most of the set, so all the audience had to go off of was the beat. Towards the end of their performance, the vibe shifted from chill beach-rock to pop-punk. There was lots of head banging, standing on amps, and hand waving that really brought excitement for the audience. They left pretty abruptly leaving the crowd confused. There were weak screams for an encore coming from the back that Ballyhoo! did answer.

Ballyhoo! is preparing to go on tour with alternative hip-hop artist, Shwayze, starting August 2nd in Indianapolis. Before that show, they are preforming at Reggae Rise Up festival in Maryland on July 31st.

Ballyhoo! Set List: Cerveza, Destroy Me, Girls, MD Summer, Middle Finger, This Chick is Wack, Social Drinker, Cali King, Front Porch, Message, I Don’t Wanna Go, Dark Sunglasses, The Fool, Cali Girl, Burrito, Struggle, Blaze This Weed, Scarlet Blue, Walk Away, Mind Over Matter, Jameson, Mixtape; Encore: Panama
