  • TR3 Featuring Tim Reynolds Had the Crowd’s Feet Skipping and A-Hoppin’ in Hudson Falls

Tim Reynolds brought his rock trio TR3 to the historic Strand Theater in Hudson Falls in December. The merry crowd was treated to a blend of acoustic-rock and jazz-fusion instrumentals, with a couple of classic covers thrown in for good measure. TR3 really loves the Strand Theater and it is obvious both in their banter and in the way they play. You can see the pleasure in their faces as they showcase their talented chops. Peter Harris writes this about their visit in January 2022 at The Strand Theater: “[Tim] has a special knack for tailoring moods, creating ambience, and shredding tastefully.”

For those that don’t know, the Strand Theater has a historic past. It began as a movie theatre in the early 1920s. The transformations it had include being a warehouse and eventually a county court house. It was a “white, stale municipal building” as Director Jonathan Newell says to the Times Union. This theater is anything but that now. Gorgeous inside and out! A perfect place to jam for TR3 with Tim Reynolds leading the way.

TR3 featuring Tim Reynolds wraps up their December tour this weekend on Friday and Saturday in Concord, NH and Fall River, MA, respectively. Catch them if you can, and Tim’s trio will have your feet tapping along. Just the way Tim likes it! Be sure to check out the photos below to see this beautiful theater and the trio in action.

  • In Focus: The Ballroom Thieves at the Park Theater in Glens Falls

It was a splendid evening for mid-week melodies, hump-day harmonies and independent live music in Glens Falls Wednesday, December 7th as fans of all ages filled the Park Theater for a captivating performance by The Ballroom Thieves and Griffin Sherry of The Ghost of Paul Revere. A beautiful and underutilized venue that dates all way back to 1911, the intimate room was the perfect setting for these modern-day master songwriters to pour their hearts out.

The Ballroom Thieves performing at Park Theater in Glens Falls, NY 12/7/2022.

Playing his first run of shows since the demise of The Ghost of Paul Revere, Portland, Maine’s Griffin William Sherry surprised both fans and even the venue when he arrived in town with a full backing band of musicians that also included former GOPR drummer Chuck Gage. Sherry joked from the stage how this was more people and more gear than he ever took on the road with his former band while also reassuring the crowd that it is ok to get a little rowdy. “I’m particularly looking at you ladies” he said, while pointing out a table full of much older women. “It’s so good to see you again!” chimed an excited fan from the other side of the room.

Perhaps still grieving the loss of GOPR who played their final show in September, fans were delighted to hear new renditions of some old favorites with “One of These Days” being a clear highlight. Known primarily as an acoustic guitar player, the surprises from Sherry didn’t end there. Using his new solo platform to try new things, longtime fans gasped when he suddenly strapped on a beautiful hollow body guitar and launched into a cover of the classic Pink Floyd song “Fearless.” The ‘electric’ Sherry would also try out several new songs, including “Stephentown” and the hard rocking set closer “Ain’t It Amazing.”

Following a quick pause in the action the lights went dim as the Ballroom Thieves then took their places on stage. Back on the road for the first time in years, the acclaimed neo-americana folk act from Boston were in complete command from the very moment they played their first note. Building up the tension with the hypnotic intro of “Canary,” the Thieves wasted no time in living up to their reputation as one of the most dynamic, energetic and melodic live bands on the independent circuit. Consisting of husband-and-wife duo Martin Earley on guitar and vocals and Calin Peters on electric cello, bass and vocals, the current incarnation is rounded out by John Henry Nolan on guitar and keyboards and drummer Kevin O’Connell (from Rome, NY) who somehow was able to play the show despite suffering a torn meniscus.

The Ballroom Thieves performing at Park Theater in Glens Falls, NY 12/7/2022.

Fresh off the release of their latest studio album, 2022’s Clouds, the band has gone through some tough times these last few years and many of their new songs address that head on. A chronicle of desire and despair, trust and betrayal and the importance of mental health, The Thieves would play the albums opening track “Worldender” next, followed by “In the Morning. “ Trading stunning and lush vocal harmonies, the cozy atmosphere almost made you feel like you were getting your own private show.

Switching back and forth between electric cello and bass guitar, Peter’s voice was both beautiful and haunting. Songs like “Almost Love” and “Do Something” put her squarely in the spotlight and it was easy to see she was reveling in it. Smiling, dancing and leaping about the stage, you couldn’t help but be charmed by her performance. Contradicting upbeat melodies with some darker lyrical content provided a powerful juxtaposition that wasn’t lost on the audience. A great example of this was the Earley sung rendition of “Shadow” which would then go into the brilliantly bluesy number “Anybody Else” from the bands 2017 album Deadeye.

Despite serious lyrics, Calin Peters was all smiles on 12/7/2022.

“Most of the time, we’re usually all about love and understanding, but not on this next one, “Peters’ said. “Picture in your mind someone you hate and when we play this song, we want you to think about them. That is, of course, unless they are in this room right now. If they are, sorry, you can’t play this game with us.” And with that thought in mind, Peter’s then crooned out perhaps the most hauntingly beautiful song of the night called “Woman.”

    I was your woman
    And you left me standing
Alone in a world that had not heard me use my voice yet
You’re just tired of my noise, I guess
Hey, we all make our choices and break our own horses
Are you hearing me say all this?
    This is the last one
    For you

    – “Woman”

Following that up with two more older, tender songs “Pendulum and “Bees,” Martin Early would soak in the moment and candidly address the audience by saying “It’s been a tough couple of years, but we never stopped writing songs and you being here to hear them means more than you’ll ever know. This next one is about coming to terms with a crippling depression.” Providing perhaps the emotional highpoint of the evening, “I Lose” hit you like a ten ton hammer.

The Ballroom Thieves performing at Park Theater in Glens Falls, NY 12/7/2022.

Showcasing their flexibility, both musically and physically, the chemistry between the Ballroom Thieves was undeniable. Interacting like a tight-knit family, even during the “sad” songs each member of the band was clearly engaged, invested, enjoying themselves. At the peak of all Peters and Earley would lock eyes, meet each in the middle of the stage and get so lost in the music that they’d both end with their backs on the floor. Perhaps the loudest cheer of the evening came during their most rocking song, “Fistfight,” rocking duel-guitar attack of the bands hit single “Fistfight.” After wishing guitarist John Henry Nolan’s Aunt Emma a happy birthday, The Ballroom Thieves would close the set with a powerful rendition of “Wolf.”

The Ballroom Thieves laid it all on the line in Glens Falls on 12/7/2022.

These days you almost expect an encore at every show, but in perhaps the best fake out ever, you could hear the collective letdown when the house music came up. Just then as fans starting getting ready to leave, the music and lights suddenly went back down. Returning to the stage with huge smiles and to a huge ovation, The Ballroom Thieves then treated fans to one more surprise by closing the show with a cover of the Donna Lewis song “I Love You Always and Forever.”

A captivating performance from start to finish. From hushed whispers to cathartic screams to synchronized dance moves, the intimate and thought-provoking show felt truly special. Anyone who wasn’t sure about this band going into it walked out of the Park Theater a full fledged believer. Up next, the Ballroom Thieves will take a little time off for the holidays before Early and Peters return to the road for a brief duo tour this winter.

  • TABoose Tour Arrives in Glens Falls at Cool Insuring Arena

Reaching the halfway point of their collaborative tour, TABoose took over the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls on Sunday, November 13, formerly the Civic Center and site of the legendary 1994 Phish Halloween show.

Leaning away from the Beatles cover that was highly speculated, both bands threw down hot 90-minute sets as their confidence both with each other and as individual musicians seems to grow with every concert.

Goose opened up the night with “So Ready”, the Shenanigans Nite Club cut letting loose with standout guitar solos from Rick and Peter as Spuds pushed the tempo to breakneck speed. “California Magic” came next, breaking its longest gap since debuting in March.

“Thatch” a new song that Rick remarked was “only two days old”, continued the quintet’s set. Featuring a hard-charging groove and crunchy clav, lots of potential was immediately shown and I eagerly await future performances of the song as it grows into Goose’s ever-expanding catalogue.

A rare mid-set cover of The Band’s “Don’t Do It” whipped the crowd into a frenzy as Peter and then Rick took great solos.

Note the vintage jacket Peter is wearing – Glens Falls Red Birds, a minor league baseball team from mid-1990s. photo by Derek Java

The improvisational centerpiece of the show came in the ensuing “Madhuvan”, giving us the dose of darkness and extended jamming we had been hungering for since Portland. Featuring an aggressive synth tone from Peter on Nord Lead rather than the Prophet, dissonance reigned as the first song to cross the 20-minute mark since Portland displayed Goose’s improvisational capabilities.

After the always-fiery end to “Madhuvan”, the quintet brought Trey up on stage to contribute to “Red Bird”. Perfectly singing one verse of Peter’s emotional song written about his mother, Trey proceeded to lead the jam away from the fiery guitar duels we have seen in the past few shows and into more of a rhythm-based motif for a while before exploding back into a great peak. “Hot Tea”, also featuring Trey, closed out the set with incredible guitar interplay once again.

TAB’s set opened up with a laid-back “Drifting” ahead of “Set Your Soul Free”, “Ocelot”, and “Magilla” – all showcasing TAB’s growing confidence on stage as this tour progresses. Pure energy kicked off “A Wave of Hope”, one of the most prominent tracks from 2020’s Lonely Trip that has become a live staple of the Phish catalogue and has led to some of the best jams this year. While last night’s version didn’t hit 20 minutes or go outside the main song structure, Trey instigated the “second jam” and drove to many blistering peaks before concluding.

Trey then took a moment to talk about his connection to the city of Glens Falls and his time spent in nearby Saratoga Springs during his time in drug court after his arrest in late 2006 before a beautiful rendition of “Shade”.

Last night’s MVP took centre stage on the next song, an absolutely BLISTERING “Burlap Sack and Pumps” – saxophonist James Casey ripped up the baritone sax for an amazing solo that saw him going back and forth with Trey as the tension built.

“Spin” offered a similar placement and vibe to “About to Run” at Mohegan – a late-set opportunity for Trey to rip over a foundational groove. The song’s outro jam was its usual slinky self, bassist Dezron Douglas seeming to get lost in the vibe as they dug deeper and deeper into the amazing song.

The pounding “Last Tube” gave way to “hey stranger”, the latter getting its second play of the tour – lots of potential in this song that I hope makes its way to Phish in the future!

“Valentine” brought the TAB portion of the set to a close, and Rick and Peter were welcomed on stage for an absolutely BLISTERING “Mr. Completely”. Taking some time at first to have a musical conversation, Rick and Trey harmonized as they have been doing so well on this tour before ceding a solo to the keyboardists. Egged on by Ray’s organ blasts, Peter ripped up an awesome piano solo before the jam transitioned into TAB’s usual solo-modulation sections. Once the horns had taken a spin with the tune for a little while, Trey cued everyone to drop out as he and Rick faced each other with huge smiles on their faces and continued to shred – it is impossible to tell at this point in the tour which guitarist is having more fun playing with the other!

A set-closing “Rise/Come Together” and an encore of “Possum” brought the incredible night in Glens Falls to a close on an extremely high note.

Four shows in, four shows left. TABoose tour has already exceeded expectations thus far and I cannot wait to see the collaborations that are on the horizon!!

TABoose tour continues on Tuesday in Carnot-Moon, PA. Webcasts are available via Nugs.net and LivePhish.

Tune in to Day After Show live with Always Almost There, HFPod, and The Great Beyond the day after every show at 3pm ET as we recap the tour in real time!

  • Hearing Aide: Lucas Garrett ‘Reaching Through Dreams’

The newest album from Lucas Garrett, Reaching Through Dreams, is as vulnerable as it is empowered. He released it slowly, first with a single, “Together,” on April 1, then four months later he released “So Many Times.” Finally, in September, Lucas Garrett put out the full six song album, and he’s now announced a release show for December 1. And what better backdrop for the upstate NY artist’s strange, fantastic sound than the historic Caffe Lena?

    Lucas Garrett

Reaching Through Dreams, Garrett’s third EP, evokes layers that he peels back delicately, like an onion. On the surface, the song is filled with synthy bass and the melody runs a harmonic minor key. It sounds like fall, like an early sunset, kind of spooky and kind of fun. Garrett’s deep voice rumbles and warbles through poetic verse and each line is delivered with interest and depth. The lyrics merge relationships with people and music, blurring the lines dividing each intimate exchange, like in the EP’s opener, “So Many Times:”

“Picking up your tune / your words turn to mine / I have tried so many times / to let it run free / but I know I will hear / all your melodies”

In addition to the moving lyrics, the guitar on the album is explosive and adds to the layers of each song. In the inspiration for Reaching Through Dreams, Garrett cited Bowie’s “Heroes,” Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely,” and the Beatles’ “Two Of Us.” He also listed songs from David Byrne and St. Vincent. With inspiration as varied in both genre and time period, it makes sense that the album’s sound is eclectic and hard to place.

Caffe Lena has been hosting iconic musicians before they were icons since it opened in 1960. As one of the first on the east coast to welcome Bob Dylan, the venue is continuing its tradition of putting lesser known, talented artists on with Lucas Garrett. Tickets are starting at $10, and the event will be in person and live streamed. Garrett’s album release show will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on December 1; tickets are here.

Early Bird tickets are $22 and doors open at 7:30.

    October 29

The Park Theater will host Summerland Music Society’s production of “Silent Halloween – Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922).” This screening will celebrate 100 years since F.W Murnau released his unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.” “Nosferatu” became a German expressionist classic, inspiring many vampire films that came after. The film is silent, but pianist Cary Brown will improvise a live soundtrack. Beer, wine and cocktails will be available for purchase from Mean Max Brewery. • Live Music and Food Trucks Corral in Glens Falls Every Thursday at The Shirt Factory

Each week through mid-September, The Shirt Factory in Glens Falls hosts the Thursday Market and Food Truck Corral, bringing together local bands and the largest collection of food trucks between NYC and Montreal.

The Shirt Factory is located between Lawrence and Cooper Streets and is a cornerstone of the Glens Falls arts and health communities. In the 1930’s after purchasing the Troy Shirt Makers Guild label, they separated the shirt making from dressmaking side of the business; thus, The Shirt Factory is the name given to the property, within which numerous small businesses are housed.

The Shirt Factory, early 1900s, photo via Chapman Museum

Inside this more than century-old historic building you’ll find signage, posters, and items including old sewing machines throughout the hallways, as the building pays homage to its own rich history of dress-making that dates to the late 1890s. This effort by the owners preserves the building’s history and honors the local community where the shirt manufacturing business found great success in the early 20th century.

In 1902, a fire devastated the Joseph-Fowler Shirt Makers building on Glen Street in downtown Glens Falls. Owners Walter and JR each owned part of that business and after the fire they took their portion of the insurance and the shirt making side of the business, while their partner kept the detachable collar portion of the business. They purchased the empty lot where the current building stands in part because the railroad depot that just across the street and were able to get a dedicated railroad spur for deliveries.

The building was built in 1902, at that time the tavern across the street was a boarding house that was in the Shirt Factory yard, before moving across the street several years later. Consisting of two buildings, one was built in 1902 and the second added on in 1910, with two short hallways on each floor connecting the buildings. In addition, there is an annex that includes Rock Hill Bakehouse, Sweet Side Records, KFancillo Photography, Dakine Cuisine, Freedom Machines and Glens Falls Distilling.

Purchased in 1999 by the current owner, The Shirt Factory is now nearly 100 creative, talented, and passionate individuals call this building their second home. Among these are a variety of classes, shops offering a wide range of products, professional services, working artists, galleries, three bookstores, and other hidden gems you can find among the three floors. There is a wide range of goods in each shop, including salt lamps, loose leaf tea, pottery, trading cards, locally made food, reclaimed furniture and more.

    The building today

The Shirt Factory hosts a number of events throughout the year, and summer 2022 sees the return of the Thursday Market & Food Truck Corral, taking place weekly each Thursday from May through September. The spacious property allows plenty of space for food trucks, picnic tables, seating areas, vendors, farmers, and kids activities.
