Friday night will also mark the release and celebration of the project’s culmination. “The Birdsong Project Box Set” is a birdsong-inspired collection of music consisting of over 242 tracks with appearances from musicians, actors, Pulitzer Prize winners and more such as Olivia Wilde, Sean Penn, Robert Pattinson, Greta Gerwig, Mark Ronson, Nick Cave, Elvis Costello, Ad-Rock, Bette Midler, Danielle Haim, Florence Welch, as well as hundreds of other contributors.

All proceeds from the collection go towards The National Audubon Society, a non-profit dedicated to bird conservation.

Recent projects of Randall Poster (pictured) include music curation on the French Dispatch (2021) and the Queen’s Gambit. (2020)

Poster, a film soundtrack supervisor who has worked with Martin Scorcese and Wes Anderson, spawned the idea for The Birdsong Project after quarantining during the first year of the pandemic. Having been inspired by the “stillness of nature,” he gained a curiosity for birdsong and bird life.

Ranaldo’s Birdsong Project concert is set to begin at 8:30 p.m. while his conversation with Poster as well as David Ringer, the Chief Network Officer of the Audobon Society, is marked for 9. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Groups of young, talented performers are being featured in the musical performance at the Palace Theater on Sunday, December 4, including The Music Studio and Capital District Youth Chorale, as well as the Boland School Dance, Ghanaian drumming group Gballoi and special guest narrator Walter Throne of the Albany Business Review.

GRAMMY Award-winning Albany Symphony Orchestra conductor David Alan Miller is leading the orchestra in both concert series, which includes directing classical musical pieces by J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson included in Holiday Classics. “It’s always such a treat for us to present beautiful Baroque and Classical music in the glorious Troy Savings Bank Music Hall during the holiday season,” said David Alan Miller.

Mr. Miller went in further depth about his experience leading the ASO during the holiday season and music highlighted in prior and upcoming performance.

Heather Occhino: The Magic of Christmas and Holiday Classic show events are premiering at Albany’s Palace Theater and Troy Savings Bank. How long have you been the director of the Albany Symphony Orchestra?

    David Alan Miller: 31 years

HO: Music by Mozart and Bach are going to be included in Holiday Classics. Do you think sharing classics, such as Mozart’s Symphony No. 39, on stage affects the audience size for each year Holiday Classics is premiered?

DAM: Yes, there are different pieces we play at different times of year. People love Baroque and Classical music, we tend to play them during the month of December. Hearing these pieces is a wonderful treat. The shows on the weekend of 12/10 includes music by Black American multi-genre music composer, Coleridge Taylor Perkinson.

HO: Is Holiday Classics the first performance where musicians belonging to your ensemble are highlighting historically known performances part of the concert series?

DAM: No, we feature musicians during every season.

HO: Do other musical troupes other than the Albany Symphony Orchestra typically join shows you direct?

DAM: Yes, particularly in Magic of Christmas; 8-9 groups are joining this performance-an African drumming group, a children’s chorus, which are important particularly for Holiday programs. Young opera singers from Bard College are joining on the shows Dec. 10-11.

HO: A special appearance by Santa is featured in the Magic of Christmas. What do you think this will mean for the children of your audience?

DAM: We want to make it as much fun as possible for kids. We pick kids’ names out of a hat and conduct “Jingle Bells” on stage and do big sing alongs with the whole audience-we want to make the performance as engaging as possible.

  • Five Must-See Shows in Rochester This December

We’ve got five must-see music suggestions to end your year this December here in Rochester. From the 1st to the 31st, we’ve got you covered. So work off that holiday meal, take a load off your holiday shopping stress, and get down and groovy with these great shows coming to town. Get out and celebrate a full (relatively) unimpeded year of live music!

    rochester shows december
    Rochester

December 1 – Charlie Parr at Arbor Loft

Right off the bat we’ve got an incredible musician coming to town on the first of the month. You can’t really go wrong with an Honest Folk show, really you shouldn’t miss anyone they’re bringing in, but this show in particular is a bit extra as the kids say. As far as folk music goes, you’re not going to get much better than Charlie Parr these days. A scraggly looking Minnesotan, he’ll finger pick some blues tunes that’ll pierce your soul, up above the lit-up East End streets.

Show starts at 8pm and tickets are $30.

December 3 – The Sadies at Skylark Lounge

Rochester has been fortunate to be a longtime regular stop for Toronto’s The Sadies. Tragically they lost their founding member Dallas Good earlier this year. Though they are persevering, getting the band back on the road just recently with a tour of Europe. They’re blowing through town with a stop at the hole-in-the-wall Skylark Lounge, where they last played mere days before the pandemic shutdown. This will both rock and roll.

Show starts at 10pm and tickets are $15/$20dos.

December 15 – Angela Perley at Abilene Bar and Lounge

You gotta love a venue with a well-curated show schedule. Danny Deutsch, who both owns and books Abilene, knows good music. So when he books a band multiple times, you should take notice. When he books a band multiple times in the same year, you better go see why. He’s got Angela Perley back at the joint after she played back this August. Time then to get out to see what her “cosmic swirl of alt-country, psychedelic rock, and amplified Americana” is all about.

Show starts at 7:30 and tickets are $12/$15dos

December 30 – Giant Panda Guerrilla Dub Squad at Water Street Music Hall

Water Street Music Hall is closing out the year with an excellent one-two punch of live music. Rochester’s favorite roots rock reggae band Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad opens up the festive weekend with their homecoming blast. They’re bringing Notorious B.I.G. cover band The Frank White Experience and local groovers The Sideways along for the ride as well as other surprise guests. Both sides of the club will be open and rocking so don’t miss out on this night of music and revelry.

Show starts at 8 and tickets are $25 presale.

December 31 – Aqueous at Water Street Music Hall

One night later, Buffalo jam mavens Aqueous return to Rochester for some more heady goodness. Aqueous has long found a second home here and never let us down. If you’re looking for a New Year’s Eve that stretches and elongates and parties on until 2022 is no longer visible in the rear view, Water Street is the place to be. The Funky Dawgz and The Pickle Mafia round out the evening but as with Giant Panda, there are sure to be more “friends” popping up on stage.

Show starts at 7pm and tickets are $25.

That’s it for this month, see you out at the shows and see you back here next year!

  • Ripe Announce New Album “Bright Blues” with Tour Stop at Terminal 5

Alt-pop group Ripe announces the release of their sophomore album Bright Blues, and tour dates for the spring, including a stop at Terminal 5 in New York City on April 15.

Ripe first became a group at Berklee College of Music and immediately began drawing fans in with deep funk, soulful jazz, pop melodies, and well-done improvisations. Hailed by Boston’s WGBH as “teeming with a pop swagger, confidence, and total self-assuredness,” Ripe is comprised of singer Robbie Wulfsohn, guitarist Jon Becker, drummer Sampson Hellerman, and trombonist Calvin Barthel.

The group’s new record pushes them in a different direction, as the pandemic and everything around them was crumbling down. They enlisted rising pop producer/songwriters – and Berklee classmates – Noah Conrad (BTS, Niall Horan) and Ryan Linvill (Olivia Rodrigo, Dermot Kennedy), who helped infuse songs like “All or Nothing” and the hypnotic “Paper Cups” into new depths of creativity.

Ripe will be releasing their new album Bright Blues on March 10. They will be embarking on a spring tour, stopping at Terminal 5 in New York City on April 15. Tickets for the tour are on sale here.
