  • Live Music at The Waterhole during Saranac Lake Winter Carnival 2023

    The Waterhole in Saranac Lake will bring 12 different musical acts to the Upstairs Music Lounge from across the Northeast, keeping Winter Carnival-goers movin’ & groovin’, as the town celebrates the 126th annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.

    The 2023 musical lineup at The Waterhole features fan favorites and pairs them up with unbelievably talented opening acts, a perfect compliment to the fun and activities during Winter Carnival.

    Annie in the Water will kick things off Friday February 3rd with high energy jams, funky tones, and chill vibes. The Reflexions will open the night with their blend of Reggae and Funk vibes with world music grooves.  

    With a larger-than-life stage presence, Saturday February 4th headliner, Underground System is a show not to be missed. This six-piece act hails from New York City, mixes dance club vibes with Afrobeat, Latin-style tunes  and other musical themes from around the world. The group started in 2018 with a reimagining of Fela Kuti’s  work, and grew into an internationally touring indie dance band. Expect flute, congas, sampling, and hypnotic,  infectious grooves.  

    Midweek will feature a solo performance from Ryan Montbleu on Tuesday February 7th. Ryan will fill the music  hall with his eloquent and soulful songwriting for which he is known for. Haley Jane will open the night with a solo performance of her own. Expect raw intensity and linguistic prowess. She has a deeply emotive and highly magnetizing presence that combines a diverse sound with Vaudevillian style story telling.  

    Wednesday Feb 8th David Sommerstein of NCPR will host a Beat Authority Dance Party! Listeners can expect a  fresh, eclectic choice of dance music from all over the world. You may hear cumbia or bluegrass, afrobeat or  jazz, it’ll keep your head a-noddin’ and your spirits up! Join in the groove and enjoy.  

    Thursday Feb 9th, The Frank White Experience brings things to a new level. Bringing the sounds of Notorious  B.I.G with live instrumentation to your ears in a way never head before! FWE brings listeners on a journey back  through the beloved soundscape of 1990’s hip hop. 

    Friday February 10th The Mallett Brothers Band will return from the deep woods of Maine on Friday 2/11. You  can expect alternative country, grunge, with a side of beards and flannels. Partnered with them is Saints + Liars a Vermont-based Americana group, blending variants of honky-tonk, folk, bluegrass, and rock n’ roll.  

    Saturday the 11th is sure to be the biggest dance party of the week! The post-parade party is free and will be led  by Rose + The Bros. This 6-piece ensemble made their Saranac Lake debut in September 2022 at Northern  Current: A Community Music Festival. Hailing from Ithaca, NY the band is rooted in southern dance tradition,  with the addition of crooning vocal harmonies, and country music influence; listeners can expect distinctive  rhythmic patterns based in a Louisiana sound, with additional reggae and melodic drum tones.

    Later that same Saturday night, West End Blend will bring the FUNK + SOUL! Fronted by vocalist Erica Tracy Sullivan, WEB plays homage to classic throwback sounds while adding their own distinct vibe and flair. Behind her, the blend  packs a four-piece horn section, two guitars bass, keyboards, and drums.

    Party goers will not want to miss Chestnut Grove opening the night! The Pennsylvania-grown quintet has  continued seeing its efforts bear fruit since it formed in Perkiomenville, Pa. in 2011, growing a dedicated fan base and a songbook filled with truly heartfelt, groove-worthy original work. And when it comes to their  abilities to groove within the canon of classic rock greats, well, they ain’t slouches there, either. 

    And on Saturday the 12th, DiTrani Brothers will wrap things up with one final party! They hail from the woods of Vermont  and play original songs from and about the dystopic present, ragtime and jazz tunes, the perfect complement to Bloody Mary Sunday.  

    The street level bar will be open every day of the week & boasts the largest selection of craft beer in the  Blue Line. As you travel upstairs, you will find The Upstairs Music Lounge: a destination music venue. On the  2nd story there is a magnificent dance floor and a fully stocked bar. Make sure to keep going up and check out  the 3rd story balcony. There you will find additional seating for when your dancing feet are tired, and a truly  unbeatable birds-eye view of the stage & dance hall.  Concert tickets are available for purchase on the Waterhole website www.saranaclakewaterhole.com and in  person by stopping into the venue.   • Rosanne Cash and Steve Earle Head Lineup for Nic Pagano LGBTQIA Scholarship Benefit at City Winery

    Rosanne Cash, Steve Earle, Marshall Crenshaw, Bettye LaVette and Martha Redbone are just a few of the luminaries coming out to support the launch of the Nic Pagano LGBTQIA+ Scholarship Fund at a benefit concert at The City Winery in NYC on January 26 at 8 PM.

    The organization was created to honor the memory of Nic Pagano, son of veteran NYC drummer/producer/bandleader Rich Pagano, best known for his work with the Fab Faux.  The charity enables ongoing assistance for families and individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community in need of financial help after agreeing to treatment for a substance use disorder.  Pagano and his wife, Karen Marks, have partnered with The Release Recovery Foundation and Caron Treatment Centers to present the benefit event, entitled 1st Annual “Songs of Deep Emotion and Bright Light.” Tickets are on sale now here.

    Cash, Earle, Crenshaw and LaVette are being joined by other artists including Amy Helm, Kate Pierson, Rachel Yamagata, Martha Redbone and Willie Nile and additional national and local music acts will be confirmed in the coming weeks. Each artist will perform a short set that illustrates an emotional and compromising element and/or a level of promise and faith. The flow will range from ‘melancholy blue to electric heat’.  Pagano will serve as musical director.

    In addition to raising proceeds from ticket sales, the event will feature an auction segment of coveted music-related photographs, including donations by Mark Seliger, William Coupon, Bob Gruen, The Gordon Parks Foundation and more. The auction will take place thanks to the outreach of Karen Marks, director of Howard Greenberg Gallery, one of the premiere photographic galleries in the world. Phillips Auction House has generously offered to facilitate. 

    One month prior to his accidental death due to fentanyl poisoning on July 2, 2021, Nic and his parents were eating lunch near the sober house that he was residing in at the time. At the lunch, the conversation turned to the plight of the LGBTQIA+ community and its fear of ostracization and assumption of lack of communal inclusion within the treatment world. Nic, leaning to an eventual career in social work, singled out the transgender community in particular for its marginalization. Unfortunately, this month’s hateful incident in Colorado is a clear indication that the stigma, fear and threats against the gay community need to be confronted, disarmed and dispelled. 

    As referenced above, the Release Recovery Foundation and Caron Treatment Centers have partnered in the creation of the Nic Pagano Scholarship Fund which is based at Caron Treatment Center in Pennsylvania. This scholarship aims to improve access to care for the LGBTQIA+ community. 

    Since its inception in the fall of 2021, the Nic Pagano LGBTQIA Scholarship Fund has awarded six financial scholarships to clients in need of substance use treatment. Services also address stigma, heterosexism, internalized homophobia, and discrimination as well as addiction. Over the last 18 months overdose deaths are up 25% in New York City with the LGBTQIA community as a group up 30% due to lack of treatment information or simply a fear of being different.

  • Carnegie Hall to Present The Music of Paul McCartney in March

    Carnegie Hall will present the 18th annual Music Of fundraising performance, produced by Michael Dorf Presents, spotlighting the work of Paul McCartney, on March 15, 2023.

    Paul McCartney has been bringing people together for decades with his influential music, spanning from one of the most popular groups ever, The Beatles, to his group Wings, and of course his extensive catalog of solo music. McCartney is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and he has written or co-written a record of 32 songs that have topped the Billboard Hot 100.

    The Music Of Paul McCartney will feature Lake Street Dive, Allison Russell, Bettye LaVette, Peter Asher, Ingrid Michaelson, Glen Hansard, Lyle Lovett, The Cactus Blossoms, and Shovels & Rope among others, each performing a song from McCartney’s vast collection of songs. Joining the lineup are Grahm Nash, Bruce Hornsby, Natalie Merchant, Sammy Rae, and The Head and the Heart’s Jonathan Russell. Michael Dorf Presents, established by Michael Dorf in 2003, founder of the Knitting Factory and City Winery, has been putting on the Music Of series at Carnegie Hall for 18 years.

    What an honor to work with one of the greatest singer/songwriters in history and have him interested in our annual show at Carnegie Hall. We have missed doing this during the pandemic and looking forward to this special night. Of course, we will miss Rita Houston of WFUV, our longtime MC who passed from a battle with cancer and to whom we will also be paying tribute this year. Christine Stone of SiriusXM will be joining us this year.

    Previous Music Of tributes has spotlighted the work of Carly Simon, Prince, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, and more. Every year, the tributes have sold out and contributed 100% of the net proceeds, about $100,000 from the evening to different music education programs for underserved youth.

  • Bono Announces Added ‘Stories of Surrender Beacon Theatre run Dates

    Bono announced added dates to his “Stories of Surrender” show at New York’s iconic Beacon Theatre, starting April 16.

    Nov 1 saw the release of Bono’s memoir titled “SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story,” the story of the remarkable life he’s lived, his challenges, and his friends and family. The subtitle, “40 Songs, One Story,” refers to the book’s 40 chapters, each named after a U2 song. Bono has also created 40 original drawings which will be featured throughout the book.

    Bono takes readers from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to becoming one of the world’s most influential rock bands. The band has released 14 studio albums and won numerous awards, including 22 Grammys and the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience award. In 2005, U2 was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

    Bono is embarking on a Beacon Theatre run starting in April for his show “Stories of Surrender.” The Beacon is a perfect place for this as Bono’s life is alive and very present on the stage. He will be joined by musicians Gemma Doherty (Harp, Keyboard, Vocals) and Kate Ellis (Cello, Keyboard, Vocals), as well as Musical Director Jacknife Lee for an evening of “words, music, and some mischief…”

  • Josh Barkley hosts “A North Country Christmas” Organ and Piano Performances

    Crane School of Music graduate Josh Barkley will host a unique tour of North Country churches, performing organ and piano music at each stop this December. The tour is free to the public, and even with stops at these historic churches, the performances will not include a religious service.

    A multi-instrumentalist, Josh Barkley has played the accordion for his high school production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” the saxophone in his high school marching band, electric bass in a local country music group, and the organ at church on Sunday. This man of many talents is best known as a jazz pianist who plays the piano on the fly, improvising music more than sticking strictly to sheet music.

    Barkley, an SLC Arts musician, will begin the holiday music tour featuring organ and piano on December 11, with each performance beginning at 6:00PM and taking place at a different church in St. Lawrence County, with the final concert on December 22nd at SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Hall.

  • Drive-By Truckers Announce Stops in Woodstock, Albany and NYC on Spring 2023 Tour

    Established country group Drive-By Truckers has newly announced their full set of tour dates for the Spring 2023. The tour makes its way to the Northeast in May, with Drive-By Truckers performing at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, two nights at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan, and a show at The Egg in Albany.

    The band with its roots stemming from Athens, Georgia starts the tour with an appearance in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 9 at The Vogue, followed by traveling from the end of March to the beginning of April for their annual four-day “Heathens Homecoming” celebration at their hometown’s own beloved 40 Watt Night Club.

    Following the four-day celebration, a four-part two-night stands series by the band opens at Saxapahaw, NC’s Haw River Ballroom from April 25-26, leading up to premiering at Washington DC’s 9:30 Club from April 29-30, then New York City’s Bowery Ballroom from May 4-5, and lastly The Orange Peel in Asheville, NC. The recently-made announcement of the schedule of the Drive-By Trucker’s full tour is after the the release of the band’s 14th studio album, Welcome 2 Club XIII, which includes new singles like “The Driver”, “Every Single Storied Flameout”, along with the debut’s anthem, “Welcome 2 Club XIII”.

  • The Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra Presents “Winter Wonderland”

    The Binghamton Philharmonic holiday concert “Winter Wonderland,” will be held on Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. at the Broome County Forum Theatre.

    The Binghamton Philharmonic is Broome County’s only professional symphony orchestra. It was founded by Fritz and Marianne Wallenberg in 1955 at the Binghamton Symphony and Choral Society and later merged with the B.C. Pops, an orchestra founded by David Agard and Russell Hawkes. The Philharmonic Orchestra presents an annual series of classical, pops, and chamber music concerts in Downtown Binghamton and throughout the county.

    The Binghamton Philharmonic will kick off its “Winter Wonderland” celebration, including music from The Polar Express, Home Alone II, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. The program will feature a visit from Santa, a holiday sing-along with a quartet from the Tri-Cities Opera, and the viewing of the classic British animated film, The Snowman, with music performed by a live orchestra and treble soloist Luca Thomas.

    Thomas is an 11-year-old from NYC, who started singing before he could even speak. At the age of 4, he was a featured singer on two Laurie Berkner tracks and is now a member of a professional children’s choir. He recently toured Ireland over the summer and is excited to have a solo at the “Winter Wonderland” show.

  • Def Leppard and Motley Crue Bring World Tour To Syracuse

    The world’s most iconic rock legends Def Leppard and Motley Crue are going global in 2023 with their co-headline “The World Tour.” Making a surprise appearing along some of the tour dates, special guest Alice Cooper will also be along for the ride. The U.S. leg of the world tour kicks off on August 5th in Syracuse.

  • Goose Rolls Out More 2023 Spring Tour Dates

    Fresh off the heels of a successful co-headlining tour with Trey Anastasio and his band, Goose has announced new dates for their 2023 Spring Tour. It’s one that will see the band tour 14 cities over a five-week span that literally crosses the country. After a five-night run at the legendary Capitol Theatre in NY in early March that’s already sold out, the tour is scheduled to begin in Boston on March 23 at Roadrunner.

    The spring tour also features two-night stands at such iconic venues as Philadelphia, PA’s The Met (March 24-25), Nashville, TN’s Ryman Auditorium (March 31-April 1), Seattle, WA’s Paramount Theatre (April 22-23), and San Francisco, CA’s The Warfield (April 27-28).

    A ticket request lottery for all these newly announced Goose Spring Tour 2023 shows is currently underway at the band’s website and will continue through Wednesday, December 7, at 5 pm (ET). Lottery winners will be notified via email before the start of venue presales, set to run Thursday, December 8 from 10 am-10 pm (local). All remaining tickets go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, December 9 at 10 am (local). A variety of VIP packages and accommodation discounts will also be available. 

    This week also sees Goose marking yet another milestone in what has proven a momentous 2022 with their first-ever live performance on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, set for Wednesday, December 7 at 11:35 pm (ET)/10:35 pm (CT) (check local listings).

  • Empire Live to Host Pigeons Playing Ping Pong & Dogs in a Pile on Dec. 9

    On Friday, December 9, Albany’s Empire Live will showcase a concert featuring jam funk group Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and psychedelic jam band Dogs in a Pile. Doors for the 16+ show open at 7 p.m. with music beginning at 8.

    This Empire Live stop marks a return to upstate NY for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong after headlining at the Adirondack Independence Music Festival in September. The Maryland four-piece has played halftime during a New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, they’ve appeared on Adult Swim’s FishCenter Live, and annually headlined their self-produced music and camping festival Domefest. They dropped their sixth studio album Perspective in March, the group’s first studio release since lockdown.

    Dogs in a Pile, a five-piece of Asbury Park, NJ origin, was assembled in 2019 and released their debut studio album Not Your Average Beagle in 2021. Their musical approach is inspired by the improvisation of bands such as the Grateful Dead and Phish.
