  • Take Two: Beabadoobee and Lowertown take on Albany’s Empire Live

Indie bedroom-pop musician beabadoobee marked her second-to-last US tour stop at Empire Live last Saturday, Dec. 3, with support from rising alternative duo Lowertown.

Empire Live, located on Pearl Street in downtown Albany, is a mid-sized room for bands with a mid-sized following. It boasts a spacious floor with standing-room-only, ideal for dancing.

Sandwiched between MVP Arena and the Palace Theatre, Empire Live offers locals a unique taste of both upcoming and well-established musical artists. The intimate venue was packed from the stage barricade to the bar with highschool to late-20s aged fans, plus a few hesitant parents here-and-there, with no shortage of energy.

Beatrice Kristi Laus, stylistically known as “beabadoobee,” is a Filipino-British musician who came into popularity in 2017 with viral hit “Coffee.” Her most recent album, “Beatopia,” evokes childhood nostalgia with an MS-Paint or restaurant-tablecloth-crayon drawing looking album cover. Stuffed animals were scattered across the amps on stage, one fan even throwing a teddy bear to Bea halfway through the show.

Atlanta-based Lowertown started off the night strong with a spirited and punky set. In album sessions, the band has more of a soft, shoegaze sound. Live, they pull out all the stops and are nothing short of a high-energy garage band experience.

The songs were fast and loud with jam interludes by guitarist Avshalom “Avsha” Weinberg. Lead singer Olivia Osby encouraged the audience to go wild, opening a mosh pit, crowd surfing and spitting water into the crowd. Fans followed through, opening a large circle in the center of the already sardine-can-packed venue and going hog wild.

Songs “No Way,” “All My Friends” and “Best Person You Know” stole the night with the most jumping and chanting.

beabadoobee began her show after a quick stage reset and suspenseful audio introduction. After performing “10:36” solo, the band joined Bea and only added more flair to her soulful, soft and sweet singing style. Bea’s band kept up a late 90’s grunge/pop punk vibe. Bea’s guitarist and back-up singer, Jacob Bugden, complemented her baby-like pitch with a Billy Corgan-esque tone.

“The Perfect Pair” and “She Plays Bass” stood out with the most energy and crowd engagement. The audience passionately shouted the lyrics back to Bea while she maintained control, coordinating group audience jumps.

Bea frequently stood towards the back of the stage during instrumental portions, allowing for her band to receive all the attention. She shared her gratitude with the crowd various times, even joking about her inability to pronounce “Albany,” butchered with a subtle British accent.

Both bands’ sets were thoughtfully planned out, seamlessly transitioned and well-executed, there was never a “when will it end” moment like other drawn out shows. The crowd stayed engaged with electric excitement, loudly chanting the lyrics to the songs they knew – even the venue playlist pre-and-post show. The good vibes seemed to encourage both sets to go a little harder with each song, giving fans a night to remember.

After an hour-and-a-half-long performance, Bea and her band briskly exited the stage to ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” playing from the venue speakers. Audience members stayed behind to dance along.

  • In Focus: Beabadoobee and Lowertown Stop at Empire Live in Albany

Beabadoobee with opener Lowertown made a stop at Empire Live on Saturday, December 3rd for her second show in New York during her Beatopia tour. Beabadoobee, with her grungy outfit and electric green guitar, fully embodied the indie-rock age of the early-2000s through her stellar performance.

Filipino-British artist Beabadoobee, also known as Beatrice Laus, previously played at the Brooklyn Steel with guitarist Jacob Bugden, bassist Eliana Sewell, and drummer Luca Caruso. She is having one last US show in Boston before beginning her European tour. Beabadoobee is set to return in 2023 to open for Taylor Swift’s upcoming The Eras Tour.

Lowertown, consisting of Atlanta duo Olivia Osby and Avsha Weinberg, has opened for Beabadoobee for the entirety of her Beatopia tour. Invoking music of the indie-rock, electronic, and lo-fi genre, the pair put on an incredible performance with many songs from their new album, I Love To Lie.

    Olivia Osby from Lowertown

During her song “10:36,” Beabadoobee urged the crowd to “Get down, get down!” before jumping at the drop of the chorus. Guitarist Jacob Bugden dived into the sea of people rocking their “fairy-core grunge” outfits as hundreds of hands allowed him to surf the crowd. Beatrice, with her large collection of red panda stuffed animals on stage, threw one into the crowd for a lucky fan to take home.

Finally, Beatrice ended her set with an encore, singing “Coffee“—her first ever original and most-popular song—“Ripples,” and “Cologne.” Her immaculate vocals, incredible energy, and phenomenal guitar-playing with the rest of her band truly wowed the crowd.

  • In Focus: Karina Rykman and Quiltro make Debut Appearances in Albany at Lark Hall

Two bands – Karina Rykman and Quiltro – made their debut appearances in the Capital District on Thursday, December 1, performing at Albany’s Lark Hall

    karina rykman albany

Karina Rykman is no stranger to Albany, having played with Marco Benevento numerous times at The Hollow and Cohoes Music Hall. Now touring with her own band, consisting of Adam November (guitar), Chris Corsico (drums), and Rykman on bass, made their first appearance in Albany with a strong crowd welcoming them to town.

Quiltro also had their first performance in Albany, with bassist Mike McKinley returning home for a long overdue hometown show. Quiltro had initially been set to play Albany in May 2020, which was left unannounced as the music industry and world around us shut down for a then indeterminable amount of time. Finally arriving home, the early crowd’s rapt attention to the psychedelic rock put forth by Mark Taylor (guitar), JD Hoffmann (drums) and McKinley.

    quiltro

During their 60 minute first set, Quiltro opened with a spacey jam that worked its way eventually into Hendrix’s “Third Stone From the Sun” amid “Pyxis,” the third track from their self-titled 2020 release. The set drew progressively heavier as the hour wound on, driving home the set with “Knight Riding” and “Field of Cities.” Played an introductory set to the uninitiated crowd, Quiltro warmed up the audience for Rykman, a perfect pairing this evening. McKinley and the crowd thanked all for coming to the show, particular his parents who were seated up front for the show.

Quiltro Setlist: Jam-> Pyxis-> Third Stone From the Sun -> Pyxis, Dark Matter, Apollo -> The Crater, In Reverse, Antilla, Knight Riding, Field of Cities

Rykman arrived to the stage around 930pm, flanked by November to her right and Corsico on her felt. Standing front and center, bass in hand, Rykman lit up the stage, singing “Joyride” to open the show in a soft dream-pop voice.

This power rock trio doubles as a prog rock trio at times, deconstructing songs mid-jam and building them back up again. The far reaching instrumentation of the triumvirate were fully in sync on “Plants,” one of the studio tracks that when heard live helps you fully ‘get’ the band’s sound.

November’s shredding and keys created dissonance while Karina bopped around the stage, establishing her presence as the frontwoman of this unique trio, one that brings more than just jams to the table.

Rykman channeled Tina Weymouth on the Talking Heads adjacent tune “City Kids,” which Mike Gordon would join her for two nights later at Nectar’s in Burlington. With a few shows left this tour, Rykman’s brief Northeast Tour is well worth catching, as she sets her sights on wider touring in 2023.

Karina Setlist: Joyride > All That You Wanted > Plants > Arbitrary > Dirty South, Beacon, City Kids, Fever Dream, Atom Dance, No Occasion > Psycho Killer > The Hardest Button to Button, Elevator

Gwen expressed her excitement to perform in San Diego as a solo star, continuing her growth and fame of her music career. Stefani blows her show to full extremes with a team of background dancers, live instruments and a dramatic outfit change from black to a yellow-checkered two-piece set. The pop star carried the energy through her show and sang a well-remembered encore of “HollaBack Girl.” The fans went bananas as they screamed “This shit goes bananas!” to conclude a fulfilling, memorable Day 3 of the notoriously fun WonderFront Music and Arts Festival, leaving show goers ecstatic and in high hopes for what the 2023 lineup will bring to the table.

  • Columbian-American Artist Valley Latini Releases Sensual Electro Pop Album “Attention Lover”

NY-based Columbian-American pop artist Valley Latini has announced the release of Attention Lover, a sexy dose of introspection for lovers of electro pop. Musically inspired by the industrial sounds of Bushwick, Brooklyn, the album is sensual and direct. This 11-track project drops on December 1 and shares stories of past relationships and love affairs as well as a deeper look at self-love and female empowerment.

Valley Latini Columbian-American Artist Releases New Album

As a singer, songwriter and music producer, Valley’s creative style reflects on a lot of social issues, self-realization, and personal philosophies on romance, delusion, and joy. “Attention Lover” branches further into Latini’s personal life and the relatable chaos that ensues when attempting to fall in love.

A huge part that goes into her sound and lyrics are fun and chaotic love life.  Along with this, she is highly influenced by her religious background. In a transgressive way, she chooses to combine said elements with contrasting themes like sensuality and divinity as a unified entity.

A lot of her live performances are centered around the expression of individual freedom and finding power in her female essence. Having recently performed on her national tour with comedian and author Jacq Frances, Valley has performed in venues and bars all across NYC. Valley’s music has been featured in a few local blogs like Bushwick Daily, The Hudson Valley News, Indie Wire, La Mezcla, and so much more.

The combination of her Colombian upbringing with the sounds of NYC offer a diverse musical background. In her lyrics she embodies true strength through fearless vulnerability, proving herself to be a modern day renaissance woman.

As stated in a previous article from NYS Music, Valley talks about herself as the triumphant protagonist, dangles a literal carrot in front of the priest and wreaks havoc on his deserving soul in her song “Tu Y Yo.” Ultimately, as it turns out, the “haux house” leads to a beach utopia where the women can enjoy the finer things in paradise anyway.

Valley expands on the concept, “the video is a metaphor for a modern day ‘witch hunt’ caused by men in power that fear female sexuality and censor the female body and sex workers.”

  • Hearing Aide: Queens’ Iceblynk Washes and Swirls on Dreamy Self-Titled EP

Queens dream pop group Iceblynk’s eponymous debut EP is a solid five-song, 25-minute effort that showcases the best of the genre.

Appearing to be named after the acclaimed Cocteau Twins track “Iceblink Luck,” the group leans into dream pop’s prized traditions. From reverb-tinged vocals that ring familiar of the easy melodies and loose enunciation of Elizabeth Frazer, to the whirring, effects-drenched guitar playing of My Bloody Valentine, Iceblynk captures key elements of the genre with precision.

    iceblynk
    Cover art for the record.

Notes of surf rock are obvious as well, especially on the EP’s first two tracks. Summery guitars characterize “Tragic,” an upbeat opener with slippery drumming and wistful lyrics that define the record. Its follow-up, the new-wavey “Spared,” is a highlight with its infectious, harmonic-laden guitar riff and a simple chugging bassline. It also features some of the EP’s most pointed lyricism, with lines such as “and then you’ll ask me to explain, I know I know that you won’t do the same.”

All tracks are consistent but none are static, with guitar solos and waves of swirling effects padding out almost every song to around five minutes in length. Such is the case for track #3 “Imagined Life” with its subtle verses of watery synths contrasting atmospheric guitar-driven choruses. While melancholic, it’s not depressing with lyrics such as “and when you can’t imagine life, another day of asking why, I’ll take you to a quiet place.”

This subdued energy continues on “Seen Gone,” the only number shorter than four minutes. Genuine lines such as “I always take two moments to break it all apart, to form a simple sentence from my scattered thoughts” add vulnerability to this lowkey, surf-rock oriented track, which also features some of the record’s grooviest drumming.

This EP starts upbeat and fast, becoming subdued and meditative, before finishing loud with “Sunshine.” A slow, waltzy closer, its array of synths and vocal effects reminisce a bit of Animal Collective. Uplifting lines such as “sunshine, you always make me feel like I’m the only one in the sky” make this a final note that comes off as genuinely uplifting.

Iceblynk’s debut EP doesn’t reinvent dream pop or shift drastically in tone at any point, but it doesn’t need to. The band’s musicianship is solid, the lyrics are endearing, and the songs are enjoyable. While just five songs long, this is a fulfilling debut project.

  • Phil Firetog Trio & Co. Release “Long Island Christmas Eve”

In December, Long Island-based alternative acoustic rock band, Phil Firetog Trio & Co. will close out the holiday season with a festive and heartwarming set at Beach Brewing Co. in Westhampton Beach, NY. Their first show at the brewery is on December 30, the perfect way to end the year. The show follows their newest holiday single, released today, that speaks directly to their home community, “Long Island Christmas Eve.”

    Phil Firetog Trio & Co.

Thanks to the musical talents of Phil Firetog Trio & Co — Firetog on lead vocals and guitar, Johnny “Pots” Potocnik on drums and Liam Gordon on bass — anyone can fulfill a secret desire to be from Long Island for the duration of the song. The tune is catchy, as most Christmas songs are engineered to be, so I’ve been singing it while home in Washington, D.C. for the holidays. This has been confusing, I’m sure, for family and friends.

Phil Firetog Trio & Co. have an indie-pop take on rock and roll, that feels nostalgic for decades past and, overall, spreads positive messages through chords. Their upcoming gigs come as they arrange and prepare material for 2023, so there is much to look forward to in the next year from the band, including two more shows at Westhampton beach Brewing Co. on January 21 and February 4.

Tickets to their show at Westhampton Beach Brewing Co. are on sale now on their site

Starting the day with Fitz and The Tantrums at the Events.com main stages, the show-goers belted the lyrics to fan favorite “Out of my League” which was a huge milestone in the band’s early career. Saturday’s afternoon sun became the perfect natural spotlight for the indie pop rock band founded in 2008 by lead vocalist Michael Fitzpatrick when they released their first hit single “Breakin’ The Chains of Love” in 2009.

The festival moved towards transpiring viral success Tai Verdes, known for his pop and indie inspired music. Tai grew to fame during the pandemic in 2020 for his hit single “Stuck in The Middle,” which successively sprung him into a well-deserved music career. The crowd grew full as Tai was engaging with fans with an urge to hurl over the pit’s rail guard, as Verdes made it all worth the wait, especially when the performance of hit single “A-O-K” was embraced by a sea of loyal fans.

Leading into one of the top headliners of Saturday’s lineup was the unforgettable Swae Lee performed an impressive and crowd pleasing show. Swae leaped onto stage telling the crowd “I’m gonna make this shit unforgettable for y’all,” leading into featured hit release “Unforgettable” with French Montana. Leaning over the guard rails into the crowd, Swae was standing over the monitors, jumping from stage left to stage right and throwing his shirt into the crowd. Festival goers swung left to right as top hit “Swang” boomed through the bass. He made his appreciation for the fans known, putting on quite a remarkable show.

Headliner G-Eazy made an appearance Saturday night, having risen to attention in 2014 when his first major label album These Things Happen hit number 3 on the US BillBoard charts. G-Eazy cherished this show in honor of his fanbase to carry on their support over the years.

Playing one of Saturday’s concluding shows in San Diego’s all time ocean overlook, Ruocco Park. Echosmith took the stage to honor their last show on the band’s 2022 tour. Lead singer and keyboardist Sydney Sierota held a special place for San Diego, it being her hometown, which made their last show of the year more memorable for the fans and the alternative pop band.

Another top show from day one had to be Young The Giant and they gave a set to remember. The euphoric lighting, mic stands strung with flowers and erratic dancing were part of lead singer Sameer Gadhia and his unpredictability as he moved across the stage and screamed with fans who floored for intro song “Wake Up.” The strobe lights, euphoric blues and purples made for an outstanding set that concluded with a well remembered hit performance of “Mind Over Matter” released in 2014.

To represent the East Coast, New Jersey-based singer and songwriter Bea Miller led an impressive set at the Tustreams Community Stage located at Ruocco Park. Grasping her career at only the age of 13. Miller is best known for hit album Aurora released in 2018 and her fans were ecstatic to hear “Song Like You,” “Burning Bridges” and “Crash&Burn” live.
