  • Steely Dan to play Capitol Theatre on “Absolutely Normal” Tour

Steely Dan are ready to rock the East Coast this fall with their new “Absolutely Normal” tour. The tour starts in Miami Beach as the band works their way up to Boston. They will play a two-night stint at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on November 9 and 10. Tickets for the Cap shows are available for purchase here.

Along with their extensive tour, Steely Dan is releasing two new live albums. The first is a live recording of Donald Fagen’s acclaimed solo album The Nightfly, complete with instrumentation by the Steely Dan Band. The other, Northeast Corridor: Steely Dan Live!, is the first live album by the band in 25 years and was recorded at various venues like the Beacon Theatre in NYC and the Met in Philadelphia. Both live albums will release September 1, with vinyl releases October 1.

Steely Dan’s New York roots run deep. Founded by Fagen and the late Walter Becker when they were students at Bard College in Annendale-on-Hudson, the duo later moved to Brooklyn before settling for many years in Los Angeles. The hit “My Old School” is inspired by Fagen and Becker’s Bard days, chronicling their arrest for marijuana possession with tounge-in-cheek lyrics. Steely Dan have performed at countless iconic New York venues beyond the Cap and the Beacon, including SPAC, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, and Madison Square Garden.

Fagen and the band will play through Northeast Corridor: Steely Dan Live! along with additional hits at the first Cap show (Nov. 9), and through the entirety of their iconic fifth studio album The Royal Scam on Nov. 10. Fagen most recently played the Cap in 2017, supporting his solo project, Donald Fagen & The Nightflyers. All tour dates are listed below.

  • Flashback: String Cheese Incident at The Capitol Theatre – May 26, 2019

On May 26, 2019, The String Cheese Incident played the second night of their Memorial Day Weekend run at the legendary Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. 2019 marked the band’s 25th anniversary. SCI is Michael Kang, Michael Travis, Bill Nershi, Kyle Hollingsworth, Jason Hann and Keith Moseley.

They opened the show with their 2018 single “Vertigo”. Kyle then kicked off a 16 minute version of “Black And White”. That was transitioned very nicely into “Can’t Wait Another Day”. They then kicked off the first of many cover songs with Peter Rowan’s “Midnight Moonlight”, followed by “Valley of the Jig” and “Siren’s”. Both songs were on their 2003 album “Untying The Knot”. The first set ended with “Restless Wind” from the 1998 album “Round the Wheel”. That really highlighted Nershi tearing it up on acoustic guitar.

The second set began with “Just One Story” that got the crowd immediately charged back up after a quick break. Next up was “Rosie” and  the title track to the 2014 album “Song In My Hand”, which both songs also appeared on. Then came the second cover of the night, The Jerry Garcia’s Band’s “Tore Up Over You”.  Some of The Grateful Dead’s most legendary shows happened at The Capitol Theatre in the early seventies. That was long before most of the people in the audience, including myself were even born. Then there was a lengthy version of “45th of November” from the 2005 album “One Step Closer”.

Another highlight of the night was the band’s’ cover of The Talking Heads “Burning Down the House”. They also performed “Wheel Hoss” which was written by one of the founders of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe in 1955. The set then ended with a cover of The Weather Report’s classic “Birdland” before they circled back to the sets first song, “Just One Story.” The 4 hour plus show ended with a one song encore of “Barstool.”

String Cheese Incident – The Capitol Theatre – May 26, 2019

  • Flashback: Tedeschi Trucks Band Heats Up The Capitol Theatre in 2018

February of 2018 happened to be the warmest February on record in New York State, and part of the reason was probably due to the Tedeschi Trucks Band two sold out shows at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester on the 20th and 21st.  I was at the first show and, as usual, the band was on fire during their impressive set just shy of 20 songs, opening with a tight version of “Do I Look Worried” from the 2013 album Made Up Mind.

    tedeschi trucks band capitol theatre

Much like Derek’s former band The Allman Brothers, TTB gets right down to business with very little talk directed to the audience, if any.  Susan is an absolute powerhouse. She proved this once again during the epic “Until You Remember” from the 2011 album Revelator.  The first set had a few covers such as Neil Young’s “Alabama” and Charles Segar’s “Key to the Highway.”

    tedeschi trucks band capitol theatre

The set closed with an amazing “Idle Wind” jam from the group’s second album Made Up Mind. The second set started with “Statesboro Blues” which is actually a Blind Willie McTell song that was made famous by The Allman Brothers Band.  The rest of the second set was very blues heavy and included some great covers like “Goin Down Slow” by St. Louis Jimmy Oden and “How Blue Can You Get” by Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers in which Susan played lead guitar and thanked their late friend B.B. King at the conclusion. The second set ended with a gospel song written by Bill Taylor called “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free.”

    tedeschi trucks band capitol theatre

The encore started with a fantastic cover of “You Don’t Know How It Feels” by Tom Petty who had passed away suddenly just 3 months earlier.  The show ended with a extraordinary version of “Laugh About It.”  During the chorus, Susan said, “Put your hands up for those kids,” referring to the tragedy at Parkland High School in Florida.

TTB was scheduled to tour in 2020, but due to Covid19, The Wheels of Soul Tour has been rescheduled to start in the summer of 2021. Starting on February 18th, the band is presenting a six-episode series of home performances called Fireside Sessions available on nugs.net. For more info visit the band’s website.

Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Capitol Theatre, February 20, 2018

  • Billy Strings channels Grateful Dead ESP shows with Deja Vu Experiment

In 1971, the Grateful Dead performed at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester over six nights – February 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, and 24. Billy Strings will present The Deja Vu Experience on FANS and The Relix Channel on those same nights, 50 years later, with a six-night livestream.

    billy strings deja vu experiement

With a nod to those historic shows, Billy Strings will perform on these same dates as the Grateful Dead did, adding an aire of deja vu to the run of streams, in hopes of tapping into the musicianship and fearlessness that the Dead did 50 years ago.

Much like the Dead, Billy Strings has the potential to unlock the improvisational boundaries of music and psychedelia in a familiar yet unique way.

During the 1971 shows, the Grateful Dead conducted ESP Experiments, prompting Deadheads in the audience to focus on imagery shown by the band and telepathically send the imagery to a test subject.

The Deja Vu Experiment is aiming to similarly tap into a sense of clairvoyance and togetherness by asking the streaming audience to use their minds to collectively “see” and send imagery to special guest receivers.

Concerts in the age of streaming beg fans to transport their mind; to feel connected to a live performance when we cannot physically be together. This experiment is not scientifically backed, rather, a hypothesis that the collective mind has the power to tap into extrasensory perception and manifest connection.

Tickets to February 19, 20, 21, and 23 are on sale now. February 18 + 24 are FREE on The Relix Channel, exclusively on Twitch. A portion of proceeds will benefit The Rex Foundation and Backline.
