moe. welcomed an array of special guests to their Capitol Theatre shows last weekend in honor of their guitarist Chuck Garvey who was recently hospitalized due to a stroke. Special guests on Friday included Scott Metzger, Aron Magner, Warren Haynes, Shannon Lynch, & Emma Derhak (daughter of moe.’s very own bassist Rob).
Metzger sat in for the first three songs which included an “Annihilation Blues” opener and “Stranger Than Fiction.” Aron Magner then tagged in for the remainder of the show. The first set ended with an emotional “Bring You Down.”
Spirits were high and lots of love was expressed for both Chuck and the band all weekend. The special guests provided an incredibly lively dynamic to some classic moe. material like Warren Haynes sitting in on a second set “Opium” and a super charged set-ending “Recreational Chemistry” as well as some beloved classic covers like Pink Floyd’s “Time” & Led Zepelin’s “Immigrant Song” which both served as the first night’s encore.
Saturday night saw Strangefolk’s Reid Genauer sit in for the first two songs, including “Akimbo” which featured Chuck’s nephew also on guitar. Nate Wilson manned keys for almost the entire night, lending his prowess to first set songs like “Captain America” and “Moth.” The second set was highlighted by Schleigho’s Suke Cerulo who amazed on guitar.
An intense “The Pit” and the classic Chuck song “Four” were just some of the gems from this set. But perhaps the best thing seen all weekend were video images of a rehabilitating Chuck himself playing guitar that were streamed on the walls of the Cap, indeed giving hope for the new year.

The announcement of Garvey’s stroke received an outpouring of heartfelt comments from fellow artists. The String Cheese Incident, Umphrey’s McGee, and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong were among the groups sending love and positivity, including the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester.
Sending love and positive thoughts to Chuck and his family. Wishing for a fast recovery, we love you!
An update was shared on November 10 from moe. bassist Rob Derhak:
On Tuesday, November 15, moe. shared an update on their December shows, noting that all shows, including New Years Eve in Las Vegas, will be cancelled. The exceptions are the moe shows at The Capitol Theatre on December 10 and 11, which will feature special guests joining that evening. Read more from moe. below:
After much thought and discussion, we’ve decided to cancel our December appearances while Chuck starts his road to recovery. To that exception, we will still play the shows at The Capitol Theater on Dec. 10th and 11th. This venue means a lot to us all and feels like the right place for us to play at this time. We plan to have some special guests join us throughout the night and hope you can join us. More details to come regarding special merch, fundraising & more to benefit Chuck & his family. Thank you for your continued positive vibes, thoughts and prayers. They help Chuck get stronger each day.
On Friday, November 26th, 2021, Vermont jam act Twiddle celebrated “Frendsgiving” (the day after Thanksgiving) with a rich and impressive display of their patented hi-def shredding for a nearly sold-out Capitol Theatre venue in Port Chester, New York.
Formed in 2005, the quartet of Brook Jordan (drums), Zdenek Gubb (bass), Ryan Dempsey (Norb) (keys) and Mihali Savoulidis (guitar/vocals) have quickly ascending the ranks as one of the most buzzed about bands in the jam scene with the most popularity this side of Phish and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. With an infusion of jazz, classical, bluegrass, funk and a heavy dose of reggae-tinged jams, Twiddle is a unique experience. It may seem an impossibility that one state would be the home of two of the greatest jam bands in the country, but Vermont can currently boast just that. Twiddle fans are very active on the “iTwiddle” Facebook Group page, which serves as a gateway for information, tickets, discussion and show details. Twiddle is seemingly always touring and pleasing their fans with a massive summer festival circuit.
Since 2004, Mihali Savoulidis has consistently elevated Twiddle to unparalleled heights on the winds of his articulately nimble six-string sorcery, genre-bending essence, and soulful vocal eloquence. The Vermont band has headlined hallowed stages in front of sold-out audiences at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Capitol Theatre in addition to making show-stopping performances at Bonnaroo and Electric Forest and hosting their own annual Tumble Down Festival. Twiddle treats their fans with gratis live show recordings on archive.org. The band has released eight records thus far and specific critical acclaim was directed towards 2017’s Plump. The boys are also well-respected for their involvement in raising funds for their philanthropic White Lights Foundation. One can find info and merch at www.twiddlemusic.com including the most recent musical releases 10/28/21 Eugene and 10/24/21 Santa Clara!
The band has embarked on an ambitious tour this fall season with two stops at The Cap. A virtuoso, constantly showing off his songwriting prowess, Mihali has a refreshing and inspirational outlook on life and coined the phrase “relax and dream.” Having often been labeled by many as “the next Phish” for years, the band delivers a vastly different experience. The Vermont-based quartet held the last three Frendsgiving runs at the Port Chester, New York venue from 2017-2019, and each year has been chock full of surprises and epic sit-ins.

The show Friday night contained many highlights including at 8:08pm when noted troubadour and looping master, Keller Williams, took the stage for a subtle yet electrifying set which culminated with a spicy “Scarlet Begonias.’ Twiddle faced an eager and enthusiastic crowd at 9:34 and delved right into a racous “Zazu’s Flight.” The New Jersey-raised Mihali, dressed in a red tie-dyed outfit complete with tie-dyed sneakers, led the way with long and complex improvisational jams. He was like a knight in shining armor wearing a white hat. The fifteen minute high energy opener showcased each of the band member’s talents with numerous solos.
The music was buoyed by Dempsey’s intense fills and Jordan’s heavy hitting behind the kit. The crowd responded with adulation at the line “Damn I smoke a lot of weed!” The song segued into a tight “Doinkinbonk” and it was danceable until the music turned heavier with the offering of the fun, “Too Many Puppies” where Gubb took over the lead in a rare show of vocal force. There was an intense light show with lasers shooting out into the crowd at various angles and speeds. The crowd plowed through the old ditty “Amydst the Mydst” with authority playing like grizzled veterans as a cohesive unit. At times, Mihali proves to be the master of the axe and he explores new worlds using crescendo to create an effective musical peak. Keller walked out with his acoutisic, creating a fine mix with the band, for an intricate set closer of “Best Feeling.”
The classic song “Apples” opened the second set and delivered just the right tone as an impetus to get the crowd involved for another set of music. It was a lengthy inspired take on the band staple complete with a riff that was reminiscent of Phish’s “Contact.” One of the best songs on Plump is “Every Soul” and this crowd-pleasing version shared here didn’t disappoint. With Norb, adorning a hockey jersey, pounding hard on his five keyboards to lead the intense underlying groove of the tune. The crowd was in a frenzy at this point with the danceable interludes in full effect. Fan favorite and regarded by casual fans as their best song, “Lost in the Cold” ended the second set in a special way. One time child-prodigy, Brandon “Taz” Neiderauer, joined the fray on stage, trading guitar licks with Mihali as only he can adding an adrenaline rush to the proceedings. The reggae-soaked song hit a bouncing level of ecstasy for those in attendance and the band meshed well with Taz. He rejoined the boys for an electric “All Along the Watchtower” encore that would have made Hendrix proud. It was an apropos choice considering Dylan had just played the Cap 2 days before.
When asked about playing someday at the Cap in in 2014, Mihali told me, “The ultimate goal is to get the band to the next level and headline the Capitol Theatre. To get a chance to play at the Cap at some point is insane. It’s a legendary club.” Mihali had dreams and now he can relax knowing he has reached such a lofty goal. They have come a long way since 2004 when Mihali and Ryan were collaborating in their freshmen dorms at Castleton State College and then playing bars and people coming out to hear “Jamflowman” over a decade ago. Now they are bonafide superstars. Don’t forget to catch their New Years show in Worcester!

Full Rainbow
All Forms of Energy
Energy has been a word that has gotten tossed around superfluously over conference tables, yoga mats and barstools. Excessive presence of the metaphysical concept has robbed us from having a name for what happens when we truly feel the impact of sound, light and heat combine in such a way to shift minds.
Avatar
Some call Billy things like “the reincarnation”, “the next____”, and occasionally “the next avatar”. There is certainly something special about a person that thinks and plays in such expansive styles while also having full mastery of accepted structures. It is uncommon for the same person to also have concern for the safety and wellbeing of his fans. It is not often that “the ___ of our generation” will return to his elementary school to give guitars to all the kids. Bass fishing early after playing a sold out show is absolutely not the thing expected from a musical mastermind. Arguably, most accurate description of Billy is “the realest one.”
Moth and Light Bulb
Egregious terms like “face melt” have unfortunately replaced the rather touching feeling of euphoria washing over our senses when dazzled by lights that somehow give the music a voice when there are no lyrics. The depth of emotion intended for each song transcends the light. The musical experience at a Billy show would not have the same depth of meaning if it looked any other way. Seeing and hearing beauty is where true presence begins to form and life outside of that concert disappears.
The intentional layering of light in a kaleidoscope of textures, colors and shapes evoke feelings that register more like a fine textile selected by lighting designer Roger Gant just for us; in this moment. It is said that moths are attracted to lightbulbs because they are designed to move towards the moon, but lightbulbs are relatively brighter. Imagine being that moth and you have an idea of what Roger’s shows look like.
The Wave Master
Andy Lytle gets pitted in the barrel of sound waves. Generosity exists all over the Billy camp. A valued community has formed thanks to Andy Lytle’s free live streams on Mixlr.com/billy-streams for every show. His pre-show and set break playlist is one for the ages and it is worth tuning in early to enjoy. To take on an extra task like mixing beautifully for all of the people at home while simultaneously managing fast changing complex music being played is seen and appreciated.
Photo by Jesse Faatz: The Giver. Keeper of memories. Encapsulator of emotion.
The Ref
Compassion is the key. While Billy Strings is the name on the shirt, all band and crew members contribute to a show with power that does not compare. It is more than a battle. Kata might even be too tame. There is more going on here. There is a volley going between the front of house and the stage, with photographer Jesse Faatz playing referee. There is great honor in record keeping creatively while history is being made. Jesse provides this selfless service by absorbing the cumulative experience of thousands and somehow fitting it into a few images. With each night’s log entry, a protective space has been created so that we can look back and let all of the feelings rush back from those treasured moments.
So pitted
Purpose
Attending a Billy Strings production means experiencing innovation, evolution and often complete mindshift for a better life. When there is no way to explain why something feels so good is when the cosmos, higher power or spiritual elements start to roll in and true attachment and loyalty begins to form. We feel protective over this thing that feels so good and want others to join in.
Afterglow
At some point though, after the show, everything will begin to settle down. We will anticipate a little more volley of light, sound and heat between masters of photons, waves, frequencies, photons, pickups, gammas, cadences, cadenzas, and canons (both musically and photographically). Yes, it is incredible, but it is also here now and we accept this beautiful experience as part of life.
Deep pink adds a little something extra.
Morning Light
The comfortable, lingering, pink-feeling haze after such a powerful experience is something also seems difficult to describe. There was once a word that was kept locked up and safe, only to be used in those declarative moments of beauty, connection, wonder, commitment, appreciation and gratitude. Cortisol coursing through us, feeling accepted within our tribe and cozy with our minds. What was it again? Oh.That word is love.

Greensky Bluegrass continues their rigorous touring schedule this November on the West Coast, and have their sights set on the East Coast in January – they’ll make their way to the Northeast with The Infamous Stringdusters in January.
The Colorado group has just released their newest song, “Grow Together,” written by Paul Hoffman upon the arrival of his daughter. “I wrote this with my 5-week-old daughter at my feet. She laid there and listened, so content. I hoped this was the first of many experiences like this for her and I,” Hoffman told The Boot. “I reflected on the amazing gift her mother had given me and ‘Grow Together’ just fell out of my heart,” Hoffman continues. “It’s a testament to a new chapter in my life and a love song for the woman who made me a father.”
Accompanying the song is a documentary-style music video that offers intimate and behind the scenes content. A perfect visual companion for such a powerful song.
For the past century, bluegrass music has traditionally relayed real tales of American life, struggle, tragedy, and triumph. It gives a voice to the quiet, yet colorful stories woven into the fabric of the country itself. Greensky Bluegrass live these stories through their records and performances.
When touring ceased in 2020 in the face of the global pandemic, the band hunkered down and compiled demos individually at first, sharing emails and voice notes. In July 2020, they got together for the first time in four months, dedicating rehearsals to the development of the new material. Once circumstances safely permitted, they recorded what would become Stress Dreams during a session in Guilford, VT and two sessions in Asheville, NC with frequent collaborator “and old friend” Dominic John Davis as producer and “wizard engineer” Glenn Brown mixing. They preserved the hallmarks of their sound while widening its expanse.
“Greensky is and always has been very unique in our world,” says Paul Hoffman. “We put our love, energy, and focus into what we appreciate about our music. We come together as a band in a way that’s organic. We take a lot of pride in how we grow and challenge each other too. We’re maturing together. I think we get more Greensky all of the time.”

Bob Dylan will hit the road for the “Rough and Rowdy Ways” tour in November, following his longest touring hiatus since the 1980s. The tour is billed as a worldwide tour running until 2024.
Rough and Rowdy Ways follows the release of the singles “Murder Most Foul” and “I Contain Multitudes,” with the former earning Dylan his first-ever #1 song under his own name on any Billboard chart. Dylan has also announced a 1980s-era bootleg series release, and streamed a concert called Shadow Kingdom.
Dylan’s fall dates will also mark the return of the road band, a slightly altered version of the group that hit the road in the fall of 2019, with two new members featured alongside regulars Charlie Sexton, Tony Garnier and Donnie Herron.
The tour makes stops in NYC on November 19-21 at The Beacon Theatre, and then Bob Dylan will hold a two-night run right after at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester. Tickets will go on sale Oct. 1 via BobDylan.com.
