  • Governors Ball Music Festival Serves A Slice of New York for 10th Anniversary

It wouldn’t quite be a complete outdoor music season in New York City without an installment of The Governors Ball Music Festival. After some difficulties with weather cancellations in 2019, GovBall had been looking forward to celebrating its 10th Anniversary in 2020, going as far as announcing their lineup in January 2020. Barred by the heat of the pandemic, that occasion had to be put on hold but GovBall made a triumphant return (this time to Citi Field) to celebrate its big anniversary with yet another sold-out crowd.

Three perfect sunny days of weather set the stage for the packed lineup consisting of several of the artists originally slated for 2020, some new additions, and plenty of New York heart and soul.

Early birds who made it to Citi Field for the festival’s noon-hour start were treated to some excellent up-and-coming acts, several with local connections. A few of the artists representing the five boroughs were Laundry Day, Drew Lucas + Livia O, King Princess, and Harlem-born A$AP Rocky. Nearby, New Jersey made its mark on GovBall with the band ARIZONA and an incredible R&B/country/soul styling from Breland.

Governors Ball made a move this year from its usual home on Randall’s Island in Manhattan to Citi Field in Queens, adopting a similar stage setup to Founders Entertainment’s The Meadows Music & Arts Festival which used to be held in the same location. Although maneuvering through the packed crowds as the evenings was a bit slow, the arrangement of the stages ensured that there was always an act to treat the ears while making the trek to the next stage.

Billie Eilish closed out the first night with several new tracks from her latest album release, Happier Than Ever, as well as several fan favorites from her catalogue. The crowd sang along with Billie through every song, which she reacted by saying that “GovBall is her favorite festival ever” and that she was so happy to be there again after her 2018 performance, this time as a headliner. The highlight of her performance was when she took to the sky on a moving platform, which lifted her up above and passed her several times over the crowd. Despite her huge set and 50,000 screaming fans, her performance felt intimate and personal.

The second night ended with a band as A$AP Rocky came onto the stage after crowd surfing on an inflatable car. His body men were running through the crowd dressed in head scarves to hide their faces. A$AP had been walking through the crowd before his set in disguise, and once his set began and he was on stage he revealed his face to a huge swell of cheers. Once on stage, he immediately told the crowd to open up the mosh pits, and the audience did so with enthusiasm. His set included some of his biggest tracks, and the crowd couldn’t get enough of his performance.

Post Malone played the final set of the festival, beginning from atop a massive catwalk rigged with lighting and pyrotechnics. Every time he took a sip from his big red party cup, the crowd egged him on to chug his drink. They did this at least four times, but rumor has it that there was only water in the cup. That didn’t stop him from making a moment out of it, and the crowd ate (or drank) it up. He opened with his hit song, Wow, and played most of the top singles from his catalog. He was joined briefly by Young Thug and the two shared the stage for one track.

Throughout the show the pyrotechnics were hot and huge, with Post even joking that it was “hot as f**k up here.” During his performance the crowd offered to help with his vocals by singing along, and he even joked, “Ya’ll know I’d sound like s**t without auto tune” which got a big laugh and huge applause. His set and the festival ended with a big splash of fireworks, with Post thanking the crowd for their energy.

  • This Week’s EQXposure Features Joseph Beaty, Coyote Reverie And More

Each Sunday evening from 7-9pm you’ll find EQXposure on WEQX, featuring two hours of local music from up and coming artists. Tune into WEQX.com this Sunday night to hear new music from Joseph Beaty, Coyote Reverie and many more!

    Joseph Beaty

WEQX has long been the preeminent independent station in the Capital Region of New York, broadcasting from Southern VT to an ever-expanding listening audience. NYS Music brings you a preview of artists to discover each week, just a taste of the talent waiting to be discovered by fans like you.

    Joseph Beaty

“Kick Out The Pieces” is Adirondack musician Joseph Beaty’s latest single, ahead of his upcoming album Rust, You Can Leave Me Now. Out October 15, Rust is shaping up to be a callback to grunge and indie rock of the ‘90s. “Kick Out The Pieces” is the most menacing track yet, which says a lot next to previous singles “Still Forming” and “Thick of Things.”

Rust, You Can Leave Me Now is the embodiment of 2020. Things in my life (in all our lives) were put in perspective and it was time to remove the negative bits. This record was my catharsis, my therapy. It is gritty, unsafe, and dark. No sense in sugar-coating it. You will hear many lyrics talk about knocking the rust out. This therapy experiment helped me arrive as a new, more focused person for 2021.

    Joseph Beaty

    Coyote Reverie

Vermont trip-hop duo Coyote Reverie will release their debut album Imah on October 13. New song “Achilles’ Helix” has arrived just in time for Halloween, with spooky and cryptic lyrics: “I’m her shadow on the wall, I’m her echo down the hall / I’m the voices in her head, I’m the snakeskin that she shed.

  • Big Freedia Brings High Energy to Brooklyn Steel

New Orleans bounce artist, Big Freedia, performed with her usual thunderous energy at Brooklyn Steel on Monday, September 27th. Bounce music is known to be raucous and high energy and Big Freedia did not disappoint, as she showed up with her signature aplomb.

    Big Freedia

As with my other musicians, Big Freedia’s touring schedule had been on hiatus for the better part of two years. Many in the crowd mentioned that they had been looking forward to this show for quite some time and it reflected in the crowd’s atmosphere, as their eagerness to witness the pioneer of bounce music was palpable.

    Big Freedia

A 20-year veteran of the bounce music scene in New Orleans, Big Freedia rose to mainstream prominence with vocal cameos on Beyonce’s “Formation” and Drake’s “Nice For What“, two massive hits that exposed her to a wider audience. But, unbeknownst to many is that Post-Hurricane Katrina, Freedia has been known as one of the biggest voices in the regional bounce music scene and maintains and extremely devoted fanbase.

    Big Freedia

Despite not performing regularly for almost two years, her stage presence has not waned. Right after getting on stage Freedia immediately began flying through several tracks across her several EPs & albums at bone-rattling volume, as she performed nonstop for several records. All the more astounding as she, along with five backup dancers, frenetically went though their choreography. It’s rare to see a performer with such intensity across any genre, but Big Freedia exemplified the spirit and movement of bounce music for a hungry audience. She didn’t let up and neither did the crowd.

Big Freedia is undoubtedly tied to her home state and her success only means more exposure for the region. What was once considered to be a niche regional sound is now being performed for large audiences in major markets. And Big Freedia displayed why it deserves its recognition, and why New Orleans is still a city to be reckoned with musically.

This was not a one-off show for Big Freedia, she will continue touring throughout United States, with more information on her upcoming tour dates available here. Be sure to take a look at the full photo gallery down below!

  • Hearing Aide: The Nth Power “Reverence”

The Nth Power today release their album Reverence, their second release since 2015’s Abundance. The power trio formed at one of the legendary late night jazz fest jams in New Orleans with bassist Nate Edgar and guitarist Nick Cassarino. Nikki Glaspie was part of the legendary Berklee College Music scene in 2001. Her classmates at the time went on to form Soulive and Lettuce.

While at a show in Nantucket with Sam Kininger Band Nikki got the call to audition for Beyoncé’s first all female band. “I had 50 bucks in my pocket and said to myself, “What am I gonna do?” Which led me to staying in New York for the audition which opened the door to be Beyoncé’s drummer on a world tour.” She then dabbled with the heavy New Orleans sound as the drummer with Tony Hall with Dumpstaphunk on their tour. Just this month Nikki released “Guardian Angels” with guitarist Tim Reynolds.

    the nth power Reverence

Nikki formed a power trio project “the Nth Power” at a late night New Orleans Jazzfest gig in 2012 with bassist Nate Edgar and guitarist Nick Cassarino. The album is dedicated to Tedeschi Trucks Band member and Oteil’s brother Kofi Burbridge. Kofi plays keyboards and flute on all but one song on Reverence. It was his final studio work before his passing in February 2019. Cassarino said of Burbridge’s presence on the album, “It means everything that Kofi was playing with us before his transition. He brought the same energy to the studio that he brought to the stage, that he brought to rehearsal, that he brought to dinner — greatness.”

Cassarino covers vocals as well for The Nth Power. The group certainly channels Kofi on the song “Spirits” accompanied by his brilliant keyboard work. The track “A New Day” really speaks to those living in the moment every calendar year. The album also sails some heavier seas with the song “Take My Soul” before “they” do.

The Nth Power’s vibe is simple on Reverence It pulls from all different soulful musical genres to help ensure the healing power of love is spread through the world. It is also a tribute to the final musical project of the legendary ride Kofi Burbridge had, and the album title “Reverence” is a word chosen to represent respect in his honor.

  • California Party: Super Bowl 56 Halftime Show Announced, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige to perform

As they say, California knows how to party and Super Bowl 56 in the Los Angeles Rams SoFi stadium will be bringing the city its largest festivities to date. Jay – Z and Roc Nation’s partnership with the NFL to handle all the league’s most important music events — including the halftime show — has resulted in what is possibly the most star-studded halftime presentation ever.

    super bowl 56

In unprecedented fashion, Roc Nation and the NFL have announced five headliners for the annual extravaganza. The show will feature iconic producer Dr. Dre, the highest-selling rapper of all-time in Eminem, The Doggfather, Snoop Dogg, one of the most influential rappers of his generation in Kendrick Lamar and the queen of R &B, Mary J. Blige.

In a statement released with the news, Jay – Z echoed the sentiments.

On February 13, 2022, at the Super Bowl, Dr. Dre, a musical visionary from Compton; Snoop Dogg, an icon from Long Beach; and Kendrick Lamar, a young musical pioneer in his own right, also from Compton; will take center field for a performance of a lifetime. They will be joined by the lyrical genius, Eminem; and the timeless Queen, Mary J. Blige … This is history in the making.

The quintet of legendary acts have amassed 43 Grammy wins and 154 nominations amongst them and with their close association (Dr. Dre has worked extensively worked with Mary J. Blige and mentored Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar musically, along with the Death Row ties between Mary J., Snoop and Dre) there should be plenty of chemistry on stage. They will be able to seamlessly perform each other’s songs and have enough Billboard charting records to keep the crowd hanging on to every word.

The opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show, and to do it in my own backyard, will be one of the biggest thrills of my career,

Dr Dre said in a statement

I’m grateful to Jay-Z, Roc Nation, the NFL, and Pepsi as well as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar for joining me in what will be an unforgettable cultural moment.

Super Bowl 56 will be held on Sunday, February 13, 2022, and will feature the winners of the AFC and NFC championships, with the hosting team a serious contender to appear in the big game.

  • Freddie Gibbs Returns to Live Performances at Schimanski

In an exciting prelude to his performance on the first day of the Governors Ball, Freddie Gibbs made an appearance at Schimanski nightclub on Thursday, September 23rd for the “Gov Ball After Dark” series.

    Freddie Gibbs

A veteran of the rap game, Gibbs has established himself as a strong force within hip-hop’s landscape, while enjoying a cult following since his days as a member of Young Jeezy’s camp. Always considered a strong lyricist with great street tales, Gibbs’ star trajectory began to shift after his first collaborative album, Piñata, alongside legendary hip hop producer Madlib.

After a string of quality projects (including another album with Madlib) and two projects with producer, The Alchemist, he broke into the mainstream consciousness with a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album in 2020 with, Alfredo. From there, it’s only been an upward trend in popularity.

    Freddie Gibbs

Like many artists post-pandemic, Gibbs had taken a long hiatus from touring. Based on his performance, it looked like any rust was quickly shaken off. In front of an adoring crowd, he ran through his most popular records from recent projects in quick succession as he was all smiles during the entire performance, seemingly basking in the glory of being afforded a chance to once again entertain the fans.

While his performance was fairly brief, Freddie displayed his obvious mastery of live performance, as he’s a veteran of the hip-hop game. While Freddie does not have any upcoming tours or projects announced, whatever he does next will be eagerly anticipated by both his fanbase and the hip-hop community at large.

  • Ian Lockwood creates satirical yet skilled pop with “Not Like Other Girls”

Comedian and singer-songwriter Ian Lockwood will release his second EP, Not Like Other Girls, on October 22. The title track, also the lead single, pokes fun at the “I’m not like other girls” phenomenon, which depicts young women acting excessively quirky or unique in order to set themselves apart from the rest of their gender, often for male attention or due to internalized misogyny. Famous examples include P!nk and Avril Lavigne’s mid-2000s output, as well as the majority of love interests in John Green novels. The meme has entire Reddit subs dedicated to it, and now a pop anthem:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaiRqv3jD7s

Lockwood follows a long tradition of comedians crossing over into musical territory, including “Weird” Al Yankovic, Flight of the Conchords, and most recently, Bo Burnham. However, he has bigger aspirations than novelty fodder. In September, he told PASTE Magazine of his goal to challenge the notion of comedy songs as dance floor clearers.

I want people to be able to throw [my music] on at a party and not everybody goes, ‘What the hell is this? Turn this off, next.’ I think if you’re a fan of comedy music, and you’ve ever hosted a party and tried to sneak a comedy song onto a playlist, you know the pain of people getting upset and asking to change the song. So the philosophy is good comedy and good music at the same time.

Ian Lockwood to PASTE Magazine, September 2021

Lockwood released the EP’s second single, “No Homo,” on October 1. Lyrically, the song is about two straight “bros” who accidentally-on-purpose keep finding themselves in steamy predicaments. To add insult to injury, it’s backed by a flamboyant nu-disco beat that makes it hard to believe the narrator’s insistence that everything is straight and narrow. The second half of the song goes on an entertaining tangent, where the narrator and his subject time-travel to the 1800s as star-crossed besties.

On October 22, Ian Lockwood is having a release show for Not Like Other Girls at Union Hall in Brooklyn. Listeners can also expect third single “Your Dad” to drop on the same day.

  • In Focus: Los Lobos at The Egg, September 26, 2021

The Capital District welcomed Los Lobos once again, as the Southern California Chicano rock group performed at The Egg on Sunday, September 26, 2021.

The group, who recently released Native Sons, an album featuring a selection of covers that serve, as Pitchfork puts it, an autobiography told through other people’s words. The album is a tribute to their hometown of Los Angeles, with songs chosen to represent the soul of the city, and the different sounds and cultures that lie within its wide borders.

    los lobos at the egg

A tight show of only 80 minutes was all the band needed this evening. A cover of the Beach Boys’ “Sail On Sailor” highlighted the covers from Native Sons, with drummer Louie Pérez noting they hadn’t practiced that one in a while.

The jump/swing with sax of “I Got Loaded” had the audience engaged, singing “Tonight I might get loaded, on a bottle of wine.” To close the night, the band returned to the stage for “Mas Y Mas” and a jam on their classic, “La Bamba.”

Catch Los Lobos this December as they return to New York City for three nights at City Winery. More info and tickets can be found here.
