  • Diggin Roots Festival Releases Inaugural Lineup and Schedule for October 8-9

    In a year light on music festivals, the season has been extended into October in Upstate NY. Over October 8-9, Magic Forest Farm in Coeymans Hollow – just 30 minutes south of Albany – will play host to the first annual Diggin Roots Festival.

    Diggin Roots features an amazing lineup of bands, kid friendly activities, food vendors, local craftsman and more. Magic Forest Farm also has multiple hiking and walking trails to explore and animals to meet.

    The great minds behind the Festival, Koryn Shear and Sugar Productions, bring a fantastic lineup over two days, featuring Yam Yam, Wild Adriatic, Baked Shrimp, and many more.

    Diggin Roots came to fruition from Shear’s longtime family friend Joan Mahony and her partner Jason Ball. Mahony’s family has owned the 200 acre property since the 1970s, in an effort to have an escape from their home in Brooklyn. The idea for a music festival came together in the last few years, with Jason building the stage. Jason and Joan brought Koryn to the farm and she fell in love with the space and vision to bring music and people to the venue.

    Shear used her connections in the Albany music scene to find those who would be able to bring her vision to life. Among those was Shane Spillinger of Sugar Productions, and once he saw the property and potential for a late fall event, he was on board. Kirk Lyons of Lyons Den Productions will handle lights and sound at Diggin Roots.

    In its first year, Shear hopes to connect the community to the location, have a successful event and make this the beginning of something that can grow over time, bringing music and people together. Over time, larger acts are on the horizon, making this an annual gathering with long term potential, especially given the location of the space in Coeymans Hollow, which has its own deep history.

    The name for the festival came as Shear and Spillinger discussed names along with Joan, the property owner. Given the festival is slated for October, and there is a good deal of harvesting at that time, Diggin Roots was decided upon, especially as they aim to dig in and make this a regular community event.

    Over two fall nights in October, live music lovers will capture the last flicker of festival season with Diggin Roots, which also has camping and limited RV passes. Tickets are available here and are $90 for the weekend. Day passes will also be available.   • Angélique Kidjo To Perform ‘Mother Nature: Songs for New York and the World Beyond” At Carnegie Hall

    Angélique Kidjo will return to Carnegie Hall on November 5, headlining the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. This special one-night-only presentation is entitled Mother Nature: Songs For New York and the World Beyond. With a setlist focused on Kidjo’s just-released and trenchant new album, Mother Nature, and special guests, the performance will pay timely tribute to resilient New Yorkers and also serve as a rallying cry for the planet.

    The Carnegie Hall performance will be the first full New York City performance for Angélique Kidjo in nearly two years. In March of 2020 she was slated to perform at Carnegie Hall as part of her four-concert Perspectives Series at the legendary venue, but just a day before she was set to take the stage, it was cancelled as the city went into lockdown due to the pandemic.

    Kidjo has had an impressive summer, releasing Mother Nature, her first album of original music in seven years to widespread international praise. The album represents the remarkable influence that Kidjo has had on younger generations of musicians, and features collaborations with a host of budding stars including Burna Boy, Sampa The Great, Yemi Alade, Shungudzo, Ghetto Boy, Earthgang and others. Together they address a host of complex issues, from political upheaval to the destruction of the environment, that in Kidjo’s hands transform into music that is radiantly joyful.  

    This one-of-a kind performance of Mother Nature: Songs For New York and the World Beyond, will feature world renowned artists including Josh Groban, Andra Day, Cyndi Lauper, Philip Glass, EARTHGANG, and Ibrahim Maalouf. The program is a musical rallying cry for our planet, exploring the great importance of human beings to each other and to the natural world.

    Kidjo also represented the continent of Africa during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Opening Ceremony, singing “Imagine” alongside John Legend, Alejandro Sanz and Keith Urban. She will also perform from Paris as part of the 24-hour Global Citizen Festival broadcast event on September 25.

  • FANS.live to Host High Holidays Services and Streams

    In celebration of the upcoming religious holidays, FANS.live and The Friday Night Jam present High Holidays, a spiritual and musical celebration. Now in its tenth year, the website will present four services broadcasted live for free led by Rabbi Daniel Brenner and musical director Jeremiah Lockwood, featuring Antibalas‘ Jordan McLean, Yuli Beeri and a full live band.

    Streams on September 6 and 7 are set for Rosh Hashanah and will take place at Brooklyn Bowl, with a limited number of tickets also available for those who wish to attend. Two more services on September 15 and 16 will be in celebration of Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur, streamed live from Relix Studios.

    The services will feature a mix of live music and remote video contributions from a mix of musicians including Alex Bleeker (Real Estate), Eric Slick (Dr. Dog), Dan Lebowitz (ALO), and Eric Krasno (Soulive and Lettuce). CEO of Mindfulness Consulting, Yael Shy, will be leading guided meditations at each event streamed from the Brooklyn Bowl, while Jewish mindfulness teacher Michael Bilick will lead meditations at the events streamed from the Relix Studios.

  • SummerStage Announces Two Free Performances for this weekend

    SummerStage announced two free performances at the end of August of 2021. The performances will take place in Coney Island Amphitheater and will require full vaccination or negative COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours for entry.

    The first performance will feature Go Brooklyn! Stetsasonic & Friends – 40th Anniversary Show on Saturday, August 28 2021 at 7PM EST. Brooklyn’s Stetsasonic were one of the first-ever hip-hop bands that used beat-boxing, sampling, and live performance to elevate the musicality of the nascent genre in the 1980’s. Originally known as the “Stetson Brothers”, there were three members including Daddy-O, Delite and Wise the Human Mix Machine. Soon, the group evolved to “Stetsasonic”, adding the prolific energy of DBC (Devastating Beat Creator), Bobby Simmons, Prince Paul, and Fruitkwan. Though their last album was released in 1991, Stetsasonic has continued to tour and will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their formation at Summerstage in Coney Island with friends and special guests. The performance will live streamed for one night only on summerstage anywhere’s website. 

    The second performance will feature INVINCIBLE: A Glorious Tribute to Michael Jackson / DJ KS 360 on Sunday, August 29, 2021 at 7PM EST. Drawing its name from Michael Jackson’s tenth and final studio album, Invincible: A Glorious Tribute to Michael Jackson is a performance of the King of Pop’s greatest hits—indelible anthems such as “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Thriller” and more—as well as dance routines rehearsed for the HBO special One Night Only. With choreography by Jackson’s longtime choreographer and dancer, Lavelle Smith Jr., the show was created, produced and directed by the Bessie award winner Darrin Ross. The night will be led by professional impersonator, Jeffrey Perez. The performance will live streamed for one night only on summerstage anywhere’s website.

    Due to increasing spread on COVID-19 due to the delta variant  SummerStage has updated it’s vaccination and mask policy They will now require full vaccination or negative COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours for entry. SummerStage at Coney Island Amphitheater will accept proof of final Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Moderna or WHO-approved vaccination using the CLEAR app, the NYS Excelsior Pass, NYC Covid Safe app, a physical/photo of CDC vaccination card, or EU digital pass, accompanied by a government-issued photo identification. Guests must show that their final dose of vaccine was received at least 14 days prior to the show date or show proof of a negative PCR test within 72 hours. Please note all SummerStage events in Central Park follow a different entry policy and only accept full vaccination proof. For all SummerStage events, masks are required upon entry to any venue and strongly encouraged for all guests for the duration of the performance, as is physical distance.   • The Met Opera to Remember 9/11 with Verdi’s Requiem

    To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the events on September 11, the Metropolitan Opera will perform Verdi’s Requiem, presented in association with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

    Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin will conduct the Met Orchestra and Chorus as well as a quartet of star soloists, soprano Ailyn Pérez, mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, tenor Matthew Polenzani, and bass-baritone Eric Owens. The concert marks the first performance inside the Metropolitan Opera House since the March 2020 closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Audiences in New York City and beyond will also be able to see and hear live transmissions of Verdi’s Requiem: The Met Remembers 9/11. The performance will be transmitted live as part of Great Performances on PBS, with ballet star Misty Copeland hosting the program from nearby the site of the 9/11 Museum. Live audio from the performance will also be broadcast directly outside the Met in Lincoln Center Plaza. As part of a citywide remembrance, the Met will be participating in the 9/11 Tribute in Light, bathing its façade in sky-blue light. The English-language text of the Requiem will also be projected onto the façade of the opera house during the performance.

    The concert and broadcast are made possible by a generous gift from C. Graham Berwind, III, and the Metropolitan Opera Chorus costumes were underwritten by a generous gift from Douglas Dockery Thomas.

    Additionally, The Met has given 500 tickets to families and stakeholders impacted by 9/11. Tickets are $25 and go on sale August 27 at 12PM ET. Due to limited seating capacity, tickets are limited to two per order.

    On Tuesday, The Metropolitan Opera struck a labor deal with its orchestra, paving the way for its musicians to return to work and for the company, the largest performing arts organization in the nation. The Met Opera will resume performances in September after being shut down for more than a year by the pandemic. More on that from the New York Times.

  • New York Youth Symphony Announces Return For 59th Season

    The New York Youth Symphony (NYYS) is thrilled to announce their 2021-2022 performances under music director Michael Repper. Performances will take place in Stern Auditorium and Perelman Stage at the world renowned Carnegie Hall. The full orchestra will return to the stage for three performances in November, March and May, performing repertoire by Valerie Coleman, William Grant Still, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, and more.

    Soloists joining the orchestra include baritone Paulo Szot on Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific, and violinist Grace Park performing Barber’s Violin Concerto. The performances will also include the world premieres of new works by First Music commission prize winners Jonathan Cziner, Patrick O’Malley, and Liza Sobel.

    The New York Youth Symphony is the most awarded youth program of its kind in the nation, recognized for its innovative educational programs for talented young musicians. It was founded in 1963 as an orchestra to showcase the metropolitan area’s most gifted musicians aged 12-22. Since its creation, its activities have grown to encompass programs in jazz, chamber music, conducting, composition, and musical theater songwriting. They have performed at world class venues such as Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Public Theater.

  • NYC and Surrounding Areas Forced to Postpone Shows Due to Hurricane Henri

    NYC and surrounding areas have been forced to postpone various shows due to Hurricane Henri. Concerts and events have been cancelled and postponed in Hudson Valley, NYC, and Long Island.

    Hurricane Henri originated in the 200 miles north-northeast of Bermuda and is currently threatening Long Island, NYC, Hudson Valley, and the New England area as a whole. On August 16, the storm system became designated Tropical Depression 08L and a mere eighteen hours later the system strengthened into being declared a Tropical Storm Henri. 

    On August 21, 2021 Madison Square Garden announced that due to the state of emergency that was declared from the impending hurricane that the Eagles performance scheduled to take place tomorrow, Sunday, August 22, 2021, has been postponed to Wednesday, August 25, 2021. Tickets for Sunday’s show will be valid for the rescheduled date and will not need to be exchanged. The Eagles performance scheduled for Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at Madison Square Garden will proceed as planned.

    Bardavon Presents announced that due to the unpredictability of Hurricane Henri and the potential for dangerous storms in Kingston, New York they have postponed the Trombone Shorty performance. The performance was supposed to take place on  Sunday August 22 and has now been rescheduled to Sunday September 26 at UPAC, 7PM.

    Outside the State of New York performances are getting cancelled as well. Due to the state of emergency issued by the State of Connecticut Jason Mraz has been forced to postpone his performance which was originally scheduled for the evening of August 22 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Updates on a rescheduled Jason Mraz concert at Mohegan Sun Arena will become available via mohegansun.com and Ticketmaster.com. Guests can hold on to their tickets for the rescheduled date.

    Scotty McCreery’s show at Indian Ranch in Webster, MA scheduled for Sunday, August 22 has been cancelled. The pre-concert cruise on the Indian Princess is also cancelled. Samuel Slater’s Restaurant will be closed all day Sunday.

  • Sound Mind Announces “Un-Heard Mentality” Benefit Concert

    Sound Mind has announced “Un-Heard Mentality” benefit concert in honor of world mental health day. The concert will be hosted by comedian Tristan Miller and feature sets from Langhorne Slim, Fantastic Negrito, Aisha Bardu, and poet/artist Patrick Roche. The benefit will take place at the Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg on October 21, 2021.

    The benefit is taking place In partnership with American Foudation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and Relix. It will represent a collaboration across artists and organizations to support social change on mental health during a critical time. Experts from American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will provide information on mental health resources, support programs and best practices for self-care as we navigate these still challenging times. Proceeds will support the New York City chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

    “The past year has reminded us all how we need a supportive community to survive,” said Sound Mind Live Executive Director Chris Bullard. “Un-Heard Mentality is about fostering and celebrating community through great music and open, authentic dialogue on mental health – which can save lives and create a better world for all of us.”

    Leading up to the event, in partnership with TikTok, AFSP, and JED Foundation, a wide array of artists will be sharing about their own mental health in a first-of-its-kind #SongsThatSaveMe campaign. Beginning on World Mental Health Day which is on October 10, artists will share TikTok songs that have saved them in their own mental health journeys. Participating in the campaign include UPSAHLand Adelaine Morin.

  • SummerStage at Central Park Presents Common, Lake Street Dive and more

    Update: August 20, 2021 – Due to the likelihood of severe weather expected from Tropical Storm Henri, Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage will postpone the Common / Rapsody / Pete Rock show scheduled for Sunday, August 22 at 7 PM in Central Park.

    Sunday, August 22, Capital One City Parks Foundation will be presenting SummerStage with two upcoming ticketed benefit performances in Central Park. The performance on the 22nd will feature academy award, Emmy, and Grammy-winning artist, Common with support from grammy-nominated rappers Rapsody and Pete Rock. Then two days later Lake Street Dive will be performing to a sold-out crowd with Allision Russell and Zia Victoria.

    With dozens of roles over the past two decades (American Gangster, John Wick 2 just to name a few.), Common is as much of a movie star as he is a rapper. The Chicago-bred MC secured his legacy as a pillar of hip-hop with classic LPs like Resurrection, Be, One Day It’ll All Make Sense and Like Water for Chocolate—few performers have balanced both worlds with such aplomb. He’s joined by Rapsody, the MC from North Carolina who’s widely acknowledged as one of the rap game’s preeminent wordsmiths who signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. The show will be opened with a DJ set by Pete Rock, one half of the critically acclaimed group Pete Rock & CL Smooth, who helped pioneer the fusion of jazz, funk, and soul with rap, and is responsible for some of the most iconic productions in New York hip-hop.

     Brooklyn’s Lake Street Dive have spent the last 16 years wielding classical chops to craft a sound that’s equal parts pop, rock, jazz, folk, and funk. The group formed in 2004 at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, but each of its members—lead vocalist Rachael Price, guitarist/trumpeter Mike “McDuck” Olson, bassist Bridget Kearney, and drummer Mike Calabrese, and their newest member, keyboard and vocalist Akie Bermiss—have been singing and/or playing instruments since the third grade. Now seven albums deep into their recording career, they were recently featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert series, performing tracks from their latest, Obviously.

    Both shows will begin at 7 pm with doors opening at 6 pm, and unlike most shows during the concert series tickets will be needed. A full list of the concert series will be listed below. Tickets can be bought at cityparksfoundation.org for any ticketed shows.

  • Musicians For Harmony Plans 20th Anniversary Concert honoring 9/11


    Starting shortly after 9/11, Musicians For Harmony has confirmed its 20th Anniversary planned for September 11 2021, with an online and in-person concert at Merkin Hall in Kaufman Music Center in New York City. The special event aims to ‘elevate musical voices in the service of peace, health and equity to commemorate the victims of 9/11, Covid-19 and social injustice.”

    Musicians For Harmony is an organization dedicated to advancing peace and cross-cultural dialogue through music. The aftermath of 9/11 has greatly changed our nation. It is important to remember and honor those who lost tragically lost their lives. There are many memorials to pay your respects, as the 9/11 memorial and museum are both free to explore.

    The two-hour concert will be one of the first in-person music events of the fall season post-Covid.  Access to the online concert will be free, and the in-person show have tickets for sale.

    The show will feature the music of Juilliard String Quartet, ETHEL, Musique Sans Frontières, and more. Composers include Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Ulysses Owens, Jr, James “Kimo” Williams, Robert Mirabal, Pat Irwin and John King. Learn more about the artists here.
