    Albany artist Sara Devoe blends a dream pop aesthetic with the songwriting sensibilities of Phoebe Bridgers and Lana Del Rey. “Big Night” is the first single off her debut EP, out this summer. Chill and slightly aloof, it’s tailor-made for solo summer drives.

    Blackcat Elliot

    Inspired by the CBGB punk scene of the 1970s with a side of 90s grunge, Albany garage band trio Blackcat Elliot is still going strong after 20 years. Made up of Fast Eddie on bass, Marky Balboa on drums and Gus on guitar and vocals, they’re self-proclaimed “troublesome, working class heroes.” Their 2019 album There Is No Good In Us features “Take It Back,” a hard rock number with Grohl-esque vocals.

    Toronto prog trio U.C. released their album Time Distortion in March. Quirky and experimental, “Magnanimity” pays tribute to the titular five-dollar word with daring production choices. While relegated to the background, the shimmering piano that enters halfway through makes the song. At times, “Magnanimity” appears to pay homage to Freddie Mercury and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” If the listener didn’t know its release date, it could easily be mistaken for a song from the past or even future.

  • Beak & Skiff Orchard to Host Summer Concerts in CNY

    Starting in June, DSP Shows will be at Beak & Skiff in Lafayette, blessing CNY with tons of live music. Groups such as Lake Street Dive, Indigo Girls, 10,000 Maniacs, and Fitz & The Tantrums will be featured, among others. “Pod” tickets for safely-distanced performances are on sale now here.

    Beak & Skiff is a family-owned-and-operated orchard with over 350,000 apple trees located among the rolling hills and valleys of Lafayette, NY.   • Alicia Keys’ “Songs in A Minor” Turns 20 Years Old Today

    On this day in 2001, Alicia Keys released her debut album, Songs in A Minor. Bolstered by the success of lead single “Fallin’,” it became an instant neo-soul classic and propelled Keys to R&B superstardom.

    After the past half-decade defined by image-based teen pop acts such as Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys, 20-year-old Alicia Keys carved out a space on the charts once more for scaled-back production and soulful vocals. Discovered by Clive Davis, Keys melded her classical piano background with modern hip hop beats. The gospel-influenced lead single “Fallin’” did it best: built on a simple two-chord riff, it feels timeless while foreshadowing the decade’s future in R&B. Keys has since surpassed the success of “Fallin’” with 2007’s “No One,” but her debut single remains her best.

    Other highlights on Songs in A Minor include follow-up singles “A Woman’s Worth” and “Girlfriend.” Despite the album’s title, only one song here is written in the key of A minor: the Kandi Burruss-produced “Jane Doe.” That said, if the A is to stand for Alicia, Songs in A Minor delivers on its promise and more. From the Moonlight Sonata-interpolating opener “Piano & I,” it’s a moody young adult record that shares more in common with Jill Scott and Mary J. Blige than Keys’ same-age peers in Destiny’s Child.

    Songs in A Minor went on to be a major commercial and critical success. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and nearly doubled its sales in the second week. Taking home five awards at the 2001 Grammys, including Best New Artist and Song of the Year, Keys became the second female solo artist to win that many in a single night after Lauryn Hill in 1999. As the initial wave of Max Martin-produced pop acts fell out of favor, she ushered in a new era of female singer-songwriters like Norah Jones, Nelly Furtado and India.Arie, blending pop with jazz, folk and soul and emphasizing talent first and foremost.

    Keys went on to release her arguably better sophomore effort, The Diary of Alicia Keys, in 2004, and eventually scored more hits with “No One,” “Girl On Fire,” and Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind.” But still, “Fallin’” and Songs in A Minor remain her signature song and album.

    In honor of the album’s 20th anniversary, an expanded edition of Songs in A Minor is available for streaming. It includes four previously unreleased songs, one being a new version of “Fallin’.”

  • MVW, Valee and Lex Luger Come Together for “Still Do”

    East Coast meets the Midwest on the Lex Luger assisted banger featuring Chicago rapper, Valee. From Staten Island bred, classical music composer, MVW (Michael Vincent Waller), the two-minute long record is the second single released from his upcoming project, Classic$ (the first hip-hop project from Michael Vincent Waller after releasing three classical albums). With “Still Do” following the Shanique Marie and Lex Luger assisted, “Survey Says.”

    A sui generis collaboration, MVW is recognized in the classical world for his portrayal of  “melodic classicism.” Something that this record subtly and blatantly emphasizes. 

    On the vision behind his upcoming project, MVW explains,

    My core intention on Classic$ is to get classical music into hip-hop without dissolving either. It’s about allowing the production and samples to breathe organically. We’re not simply trying to add orchestral heavy strings. Instead, we’re relying on dark and episodic chamberal moments, which fit naturally. I hope people are like, I didn’t know classical music could be so funky. I can’t believe trap [music] is so sensuous and beautiful.

    “Still Do,” is rich in production. It begins with a sensual violin solo which loops throughout before light strings and a thumping drum track starts the record. Light keys are sprinkled throughout the loop and Valee echoes his rhymes of a luxurious life, with trap and classical genres working together symbiotically.

    The production on the song just spoke to me, Valee says of the record. I knew I had to do something different and use a brand new flow for it.

    On Classic$, MVW also recruits multi-platinum producer Lex Luger (known for his extravagant sounding orchestral beats and unique use of ihats to open records), whose work with the likes of Rick Ross, Kanye West, Waka Flocka Flame amongst others have made him world renowned. 

    The two have co-produced multiple records for the album as they have unlocked a bridge between their two worlds.

     I want to take the same attention to detail associated with classical and chamber music and apply it to one of the most viable, listenable, and casual genres, i.e. trap, explains MVW.

    It’s got freshness and energy, but there are a whole bunch of nuances and details you don’t typically hear in modern rap. I’m trying to take the best of both worlds. 

  • Speak, Memory Releases “Adirondack” EP

    Oklahoma City based band Speak, Memory released their latest EP, Adirondack, on May 21. Adirondack features 3 original tracks evocative of the Upstate NY mountains, fittingly titled “Trails,” “Lakes” and “Cabin.” 

    Speak, Memory is a three-piece act comprised of Timothy Miller on guitar and vocals, Cody Fowler on bass and Jonathan Thomas on drums. Adirondack was recorded back in December 2019 at Breathing Rhythm Studio in Norman, OK. Throughout the recording process, the band collaborated with iconic OKC musician, producer and sound engineer Bartees Strange. Strange mixed the EP, creating a rich and percussive sound profile.

    While Adirondack is almost entirely instrumental, aside from some brief vocals by Miller on “Lakes,” there is a deeply emotional feel to each track. The instrumentation, especially on “Trails,” feels wistful and breezy yet contains strong punches of drums and a catchy guitar riff. The band has previously talked about how the complex idea of unrequited love often inspires their work. This sensation of romance entangled with tinges of sadness or chaos feels strongly present on their new EP.

    We try to invoke a feeling of hope into our music, which is something I personally feel the world needs more of right now. Adirondack specifically focuses on varying elements of nature, and how the volatility of it all often reflects our current economic and political climate.

    Speak, Memory’s conceptual choices of both unrequited love and an exploration of nature and volatility are also made clear in their music video for “Trails.” The video, which premiered on April 2, shows scenes of crashing waves and neon-lit bedrooms as the two protagonists seem to figure out their emotions. The band themselves are even shown playing music in the woods.

    The quirky calmness and the math rock influences of Adirondack make for an incredibly enjoyable and laid-back listening experience. The EP is currently available to stream and purchase.   • Arts for Art Announces Free Outdoor Concert Series

    New York City based arts organization Arts for Art is celebrating the return of live music by presenting free outdoor concerts on June 12 and 13. The concerts will take place from 3-5 PM at the First Street Green Cultural Park located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

    The event will be in compliance with CDC and New York City Covid-19 guidelines. Notable performers include William Parker, Sam Newsome, Darius Jones, Steve Swell and many more. You can see the full schedule for the weekend below.

    Arts for Art was founded in 1996 and its “work is rooted in a commitment to social justice as equity and the promotion and advancement of FreeJazz, an African American indigenous art form in which improvisation is principle.” This upcoming outdoor concert series is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and City Council Member Carlina Rivera.   • Neckscars Reimagine Punk Rock With Debut Album “Don’t Panic”

    Emerging in late 2018 out of Downstate New York, Neckscars turned a variety of stylistic music ambitions into a seamless reimagination of punk. To listeners, their sound is reminiscent of classic punk rock and roll. In reality, the sound is independent of frayed nostalgia and standard song formulas.

    Then, in March of 2020, Neckscars entered Nada Studios in Montgomery, NY. The band collaborated with producer John Naclerio and Sean-Paul Pillsworth for their first full-length recording. After ripping through 8 songs in just three days, the session came to a halt in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic.

    Eventually, the band returned to the studio in the fall to tie up loose ends and bring another two songs to the table. The album begins with an earthy introduction from “In Front of Me,” followed by an even grittier set of middle tracks, and finishes with more subtle melodic rock undertones espoused by songs like “Let You Down” and “First Time, Long Time.” Finally, the album and new tracks were completed with a mastering by Jesse Cannon followed by the release date announcement.

    Neckscars’ motive with their debut album Don’t Panic? To bring to life a blend of rock and melodic punk with gravelly vocal delivery. The band has teased a new single, “Jarring” to highlight the upcoming album release. Below, check out the official music video via Engineer Records.

  • Superbloom Serve Brooklyn Grunge With Live EP & Album

    Brooklyn’s alternative rock band Superbloom has dropped Live at Studio G, a 3 song live EP made up of tracks off their upcoming studio LP ‘Pollen’ out June 1st. The EP includes the live version of a new single, in fact, the title track, off the upcoming LP Pollen.

    Superbloom: Live at Studio G was recorded at Studio G in Brooklyn, engineered by Jack Counce, and mixed & mastered by Brian DiMeglio. The EP contains three songs off the new album Pollen including the title track itself, “Mary on a Chain,” and “Whatever.”

    Superbloom’s recent singles “Muzzle,” “Whatever” and “Mary on a Chain,” needed a good follow-up considering those landed on Spotify’s All New Rock, Alternative Noise playlists and more. They definitely lived up to the hype with both Pollen the single and the album.

    Recording at Studio G was a dream. We’re huge fans of live studio recordings like Audiotree, KEXP and Live at Studio 4 and we sort of threw ourselves at the idea with our own resources. The studio itself is unreal and Jack is a longtime friend of the band. We spent the day hanging out, messing with tones, playing through the songs and eating pizza. Can’t imagine a better day for a band.

    Their debut album, Pollen is a 12-track love-letter to heavy alternative music. A mixture of old and new make up every song, if you’re looking for something fresh that somehow still sparks nostalgia Pollen has got it. Perfect for road trips or hangs by the water.

    With all the vibes of Seattle moved to the east coast this Brooklyn based band brought grunge into 2021 in a great way. If you have any sort of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, or Pearl Jam shaped hole in your heart Superbloom is the sound to fix that. Most of the album is face paced but if you want to slow it down Muzzle or Twig are the songs for you.

    The album was mastered by Will Yip (whose credits include projects with The Menzingers, Turnstile, Quicksand, Mannequin Pussy, Code Orange), mixed by Joe Reinhart (Beach Bunny, Remo Drive, Joyce Manor, Hop Along), artwork by Patrick Turk Collage Art, and produced by Superbloom. 

    While the album’s feedback-laced instrumentation is hard-hitting at every turn, the band’s sonic signature is embedded in the vocal performance that fills each track with complex layering, earworm melodies and lush harmonies that deliver discoveries of nuanced detail with each listen. The sounds span from infectiously bouncy hard rock, instantly nostalgic acoustic songs, sing-along choruses, and undeniable hooks.

    Pollen released on all streaming services on June 1, and is available for digital and pre-orders for the 180 gram blue with white marble vinyl, on June 14.

  • In Focus: Twiddle, Aqueous and Dopapod drench fans in jams at Apple Valley

    Twiddle headlined 4 nights at Apple Valley in Lafayette, NY over Memorial Day weekend, and welcomed Dopapod and Aqueous for two nights each. It was a rainy run of shows just south of Syracuse, but the weather didn’t damper spirits one bit.

    Dopapod and Aqueous each opened two nights, with Dopapod taking the honors on Thursday and Friday, and Rob Compa & Eli Winderman joining Twiddle on night one for “Syncopated Healing.” The next night all members of Dopapod, including Chuck Jones and Neal ‘Fro’ Evans joined for the evening’s closing number, “Latin Tang.”

    Aqueous would also join Twiddle on Saturday and Sunday, with Mike Gantzer sitting in for “Slippin in the Kitchen” and “All along the Watchtower.” Similar to their Dopapod counterparts, all of Aqueous joined in for “Shakedown Street” to close out the weekend.

    Apple Valley Park has a great lineup this summer, with Get the Led Out, Allman Betts Band, Billy Strings, Umphrey’s McGee, Tedeschi Trucks Band and many more arriving over in the next couple months. Get your tickets here.

    Amid the festivities in Lafayette, Long Island’s Baked Shrimp performed two afternoon shows at the Westcott Theater in Syracuse, welcoming Ryan and Mihali from Twiddle, and Mike from Aqueous, to join them. Baked Shrimp are poised for a breakout year, especially after building up momentum during this last year and heading to the finals of NYS Music’s March Madness.   • Slipknot’s Knotfest Roadshow Visits Darien Lake & Syracuse

    Slipknot has announced the resuming of the Knotfest Roadshow, with stops in Darien Lake and Syracuse. The 2021 edition of the tour will start on Sept 28 in Illinois. The 24-night trek will criss-cross the United States and artists such as Killswitch Engage, Fever 333, and Code Orange are all confirmed to join the run.

    Following the exciting news of Knotfest Iowa, their massive production planned for September, as well as the confirmation from the band that they are in the studio working on the follow-up to We Are Not Your Kind, the masked nine will return to their caravan of chaos. Tour dates include two shows in New York, one at the Darien Lake Amphitheater in Darien Center on Oct 3 and one at the Lakeview Amphitheater in Syracuse on Oct 5.

    Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor weighed in on the kind of anticipation that is now building ahead of Slipknot getting back to the business of decimating stages again. “With the world opening up, it’s time to get excited about life again. To get back to life again. This tour is a long time coming and we hope you’re as excited to see it as we are to play it. Stay safe, stay (sic) and we’ll see you soon.”

    As for the band’s announcement of recording new music in the studio. Just last week, the band’s artistic architect and percussionist M.Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan confirmed to the U.K. media that the band was in fact, in the studio and in the thick of working on “God music” in the follow up to the universally-lauded 2019 release of We Are Not Your Kind.
