  • Hearing Aide: Trauma Cat ‘Prepare To Apologize’

From the post-industrial hellscape of Syracuse, New York comes Trauma Cat, who have delivered to the world their first full length LP entitled Prepare to Apologize which was released in April 2021. This irreverent and ecclectic gem that was co-produced by the band and the elusive St. Julian P. Dingusand, sports 15 tracks (3 tracks including “Joshua,” “Fire in the Jail,” and “Freaks with Wings” are re-issued singles) that span rock genres that include pop, alternative, electronica, and prog rock.

    Trauma cat

The band has cheekily branded their special brand of musicial gumbo on their website, “Though critics speculate on the band’s true origin and the meaning of their existence, Trauma Cat are widely credited as the founders of “cuck rock,” an indeterminate school of music indebted to incessant apology and shameless cross-genre appropriation. Others have described Trauma Cat’s sound as “uncomfortable art rock,” and their politics as “alt-wrong.”

The Trauma Cat roster is comprised of the musically talented and fashion forward Ralph Kojig (guitar and vocals), Roman Pando (bass and vocals), and Rutger DiBoyere (drums). Together they comprise a wonderfully creative power trio that has been successful in creating a personau that is reminicent of a combination of punk pioneers Devo and Saturday morning cartoon favorites Josie and the Pussycats. The glorious result of this concoction is the band’s demonstrable irreverance and hilarious comedic take on the music biz, and yet despite this silliness, they have created an enjoyable record and that is fun, fresh and creative.

Trauma Cat has released the following “documentary” to introduce listener’s to their own distinct brand of “Cuck Rock” and to “apologize for their new LP.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7DSttG7mx8

The record starts off with title track “Prepare to Apologize,” which is initially a short verbal rant between members Kojig and Pando, that leads into a short but sonically pleasing acapella number. The track seamlessly transitions into the second song on the LP “Indivisible,” reminiscent in musical style to a mash up of Rage Against the Machine and Tool. Heavy on bass and sporting great vocals that are both provided by Kojig, “Indivisible” illustrates why Trauma Cat won the 2021 Syracuse Area Music Award for Best New Artist.

Prepare to Apologize’s third track is “Trauma Cat.” This is a fun and upbeat tune that has all the makings of the band’s offical theme song if they ever decide to create their own must see reality TV series (look out Kardashians). Kojig provides just the right amount of heavy guitar and along with DiBoyere percussion this track will get the listener’s blood pumping.

Another highlight on the record is fourth track “Joshua”, which was originally released as a single by the band back in November of 2020. Trauma Cat deftly released a remarkably professional music video for “Joshua” that was animated and directed by El Salvadorian sensation Lincktendo back in January 2021. Lyrically the song describes a daliance into bisexuality that ends up in a bad breakup which then ultimately ruins a friendship. “Joshua” is a strong tune with loads of pop sensibility which makes it ideal for radio play. It features songwriter Kojig’s hypnotic chorus, “It came over me like a wave”, which is a catchy and memorable hook that will stay with listeners.

“Fire In The Jail” is the eleventh song on Prepare To Apologize. This anti-social anthem promtoes dissent against the world’s demanding vapid conformity. Breaking out of the prision of these imposed expectations. Kojig sings, “I just can’t believe that these people…content to live like sheep following the crowd.” Living on your own terms without worrying about other people’s perceptions an expectations is the core message of this rebellious song, which utilizes a good amount of vibrato on guitar and reverb on Pando’s vocal to evoke a distopian landscape.

Although this trio of self-depricating muscians does not take itself too seriously, the musical craftsmanship and production value of Trauma Cat’s debute LP shows passion and commitment that these Jester’s of “Cuck Rock” have for their craft. Prepare To Apologize is a great album that hopefully will be the first of many that these denzians of musicial mayhem produce for an ever increasingly bleak world that is crying out for more mirth and humor.

Key Tracks: Joshua, Trauma Cat, Lob A Grenade, Fire In The Jail

  • Jeremy Hilliard releases “Long Lives: A Collection of Home Demos”

Jeremy Hilliard has released Long Lives: A Collection of Home Demos that represent the first incarnation of songs that are later worked out and performed by his band PEAK.

    jeremy hilliard

Hilliard stresses these are home demos and are very rough around the edges, originally not intended for release. Hilliard recorded them using only an outdated version of Logic Pro X, one 58 mic, one electric and one acoustic guitar, and a little 1.5 octave keyboard. A testament to the raw tracks, he spent no more than a session recording each one.  These demos are released ahead of the new PEAK album, due out this September.

About half of the songs on here I’ve been carrying with me for ten years or more, and the other half is from recent writing. These are songs that are super chill and Americana in style, falling outside the usual material I end up presenting to the band.  They also seem to be a bit more personal in nature. In fact, I realized recently there’s a full song cycle here, and I engaged Beth to sing the harmony vocals on a lot of these to help finish them, especially as we have lived them all together.

Enjoy this 35 minute collection of demos from Hilliard, with “extremely homemade” video slideshows. Follow Jeremy Hilliard on Facebook.

Tracklist: Shot In The Dark, Long Lives, While The Days Go On Back Home, Pahrumpadise, Low-Down Fahrenheit Frostburg Blues, The Wind and the Rain, Soulard Wedding, Four Forces, Morning In Brooklyn, Blue Parkway

  • 10,000 Maniacs to Perform at Beak and Skiff Apple Orchards

Legendary alt-rock band from Jamestown, 10,000 Maniacs featuring Mary Ramsey, will be performing at Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards on Friday, June 11th, marking their first performance since February 29, 2020.

    10000 maniacs beak skiff

10,000 Maniacs has been kicking it for 40 years at this point. The band still consist of four of the six original members: Mary Ramsey, who replaced the lead singer in 1993 on lead vocals and viola; Steven Gustafson on bass and guitar; Dennis Drew on keyboard; Jeff Erickson who replaced founding member Robert Buck on guitar; John Lombardo on guitar; and Jerome Augustyniak on drums.

After nearly 15 months off the road, 10,000 Maniacs is excited to finally get back to playing shows. The time off the road has also given the band time to write new material, with a couple dozen new tunes in the works and the prospect of recording a new studio album. Releasing close to 20 albums over their storied career, 10,000 Maniacs has become recognized as one of the most enduring bands from the early “alternative rock” movement. Their critically acclaimed, break-out album, “In My Tribe”, was included in Rolling Stone Magazine’s “100 Best Albums Of The Eighties.”

It will be a happy day when we all in the arts and everyday life can experience the freedom to breathe and be in a safe and nurturing environment. I am looking forward to being energized again by our amazing and loyal fans

    Mary Ramsey, Lead Singer

Tickets are offered in pods of 2 people ($130-$190) and 4 people ($260-$380). For more information call 315-696-6055 or visit beakandskiff.com

  • Sulene Releases Chill Version of Destiny Child’s ‘Say My Name’

Brooklyn-based indie-pop artist Sulene, releases her twist on the famous Destiny’s Child song, “Say My Name”, following the release of her EP, he•don•ic.

    Sulene

Sulene was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa but when she turned 19, she came to the U.S with plans to start her music career. In 2013, she graduated from Berklee College with a degree in film scoring and moved to Brooklyn and began to sing and write songs.

The following years consisted of her playing the guitar for Betty Who, Candy Hearts– now known as Best Ex, and for Nate Ruess of the band Fun. She’s performed on live television, her music has been featured on television shows and films. Her music has been a hit in clubs throughout the city and has made an impression on President Obama. In 2017 Sulene released her first solo EP titled, Strange— which she wrote in hotel rooms and tour buses.

On March 5, 2021, Sulene dropped he•don•ic, which she wrote, produced and recorded in her apartment in Brooklyn. He•don•ic tells the story of her relationship with hedonism and addiction which was a difficult process for her. The dark and candid lyrics were accompanied by beats consisting of synths and guitars. The EP allowed her to express herself in a different way, and she kept that going with her new spin on Destiny Child’s “Say My Name.”

Sulene grew up listening to their music and admired it. She covered the hit song about two years ago during a live show but wanted to switch up its energy. With the pandemic putting a halt on live music shows, she decided to record the cover and release it. While her version slows down and strips away the beat and takes a chill route, the lyrics and emotions behind the song remain the same. Sulene’s cover of “Say My Name” is available on all streaming platforms along with a visualizer on Youtube.

  • This Week’s EQXposure Features The Wufs, Red Light Rivals And More

Each Sunday evening from 7-9pm you’ll find EQXposure on WEQX, featuring two hours of local music from up and coming artists. Tune into WEQX.com this Sunday night to hear new music from The Wufs, Red Light Rivals and many more!

    The Wufs

WEQX has long been the preeminent independent station in the Capital Region of New York, broadcasting from Southern VT to an ever-expanding listening audience. NYS Music brings you a preview of artists to discover each week, just a taste of the talent waiting to be discovered by fans like you.

The Wufs of Hollis, New Hampshire are debuting new music on Sunday, May 9. Their 2020 single, “Naked In Line,” is an earworm thanks to its simple yet arresting guitar riff. More recently, the Wufs released the groovy “Searchlight” last March.

With gravelly vocals and a gritty country feel, the verses to Red Light Rivals’ “There Ain’t Enough Time” sound like an updated Johnny Cash. The chorus and bridge are much poppier, closer to Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors, but Red Light Rivals is able to navigate both territories with ease. Rather than succumbing to whiplash, it showcases their versatility.

“Daycare Dropout” is the first song off the Pine Boys’ EP, Electric Minnow. A quirky rock ballad about a rebellious toddler, it evokes “Another Brick in the Wall” and Frenchy from Grease equally. Where Alice Cooper would protest pencils and books, this song’s protagonist is more concerned with Crayola and naptime. Deceptively simple, repeat listens show the song is more sonically interesting than it has any right to be. The Pine Boys are a trio from Albany, NY, consisting of Andrew Cerone, Brett Maney and Sam Laskey.

    joshua west

WEQX has long been the preeminent independent station in the Capital Region of New York, broadcasting from Southern VT to an ever-expanding listening audience. NYS Music brings you a preview of artists to discover each week, just a taste of the talent waiting to be discovered by fans like you.

Songwriter and brilliant musician Joshua West will share his tune “Feel That Pulse” off his forthcoming release, Let Your Voice Be Heard which is planned for release over the summer.

“Feel That Pulse”  was written back in 2016 in response to the Pulse Nightclub tragedy in Orlando. The song’s message is one of love, equality and acceptance – urging us to let everyone “Sing the song they were born to sing.” It features Mihali Savoulidis of Twiddle on lead guitar, along with a great list of Vermont and upstate NY musicians.

Vermont independent group, Jade Relics, comprised of IamE, RicoJames, and Elder Orange latest single, “ISLAND” is a mind blowing tune that takes a serious groove adjustment mid-way through, as if it is the sonic equivalent of grabbing someone by the arm to pull them away from getting hit by a speeding train. The feel switch pulls the aritist in and figuratively forces their attention on where the song is taking them.

Athena Burke give us a powerful and positive anthem to remind us to stand strong in these off centered times. In her own words, “I will not fall “  is an emotional power anthem I wrote to help heal a past filled with trauma. A call to our inner strength in times of challenge. My sister, Lori had a life mantra. It came from our childhood. She had these dolls called Weebles. The slogan was ‘Weebles wobble but they don’t fall down.’ This song is dedicated to all of us who won’t fall down. And my sister Lori, who didn’t make it but inspired everyone around her. I hope this song will bring you love and power and strength on those days when you need it.” Produced by Devon Seegers of Bathrobe Robots.
