Hamilton Leithauser announced his record release party will be held on a virtual platform for his upcoming record, Live! at Café Carlyle LP. The record release party is taking place on September 12, at 8PM EST.
Hamilton Leithauser is an american singer-songwriter best known for being the lead vocalist of the American indie rock band The Walkmen. He is also widely known for his solo work like “A 1000 Times” and “Here They Come” His newest record, Live! at Café Carlyle LP, was recorded at New York City’s landmark Café Carlyle in January 2020. The Café Carlyle is known for being a luxurious, mural-lined cabaret venue at the Carlyle Hotel. It’s a high end establishment with a dress code and is known for having many celebrity appearances and originally opened in 1955.
The record release party will be broadcasted from Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, NY where Hamilton Leithauser will be performing the album. Levon Helm Studios was established in 1975 and is famously known as an american studio and venue founded by Levon Helm who is widely known as the drummer and one of the vocalists in The Band who played Woodstock back in 1969. This Saratoga Springs artist has quite the impressive resume. This song was produced by Chris Sclafani who was an engineer on hit songs by Ed Sheeran, Selena Gomez, and Gwen Stefani. She’s recorded and/or performed with the Goo Goo Dolls, 10,000 Maniacs, Jull Sobule, Dickie Betts, and many others. Her songs have been used in ABC, NBC, and Lifetime shows including Dance Moms where her music was used 13 times while helping to raise tens of thousands of dollars for causes like Autism support and pet rescue. Cassandra Kubinski is very similar to the singer/songwriters of the late 70’s…proves that the genre (singer/songwriter) can still be transcendent.

The official music video for “Stardust” was shot in Boulder, CO in July and is expected to be released in September.
This singer/songwriter is from Shushan, NY and has played mainly in the Troy small venue and house show scene. He draws inspiration from “outsider music, the eccentric and naïve stylings of fringe figures excluded from the musical mainstream. He tries to inject the free-spirited ethos of such musical mavericks as Wesley Willis and Daniel Johnston into a more accessible pop format.” Be on the lookout for his new EP, recorded with Rick Spataro of Florist, which should be out by the end of this month.
Lucas Neil – “Wild Winds”
He is a 23 year old independent musician who is currently living the van life in Rhode Island. He grew up in Saratoga Springs, New York and is the son of Jeffrey Johnson who was the drummer of a group called The Make who toured along the east coast through the mid to late eighties. Lucas believes The Make first got radio play on WEQX. If so, he says it’s fun to follow in his dad’s footsteps. If not, it’s probably fun anyway. Regardless of whether or not his dad got played on EQX first, keep an ear out because he says the best is yet to come.
Brooklyn-based musical duo Drug Couple has released their sophomore EP Choose Your Own Apocalypse via Papercup. The EP draws inspiration from classic rock greats, like the Rolling Stones, Liz Phair, and REM, exploring finding that someone special to spend the end of times with.
A real life couple, as well as creative duo, Drug Couple’s music showcases the ongoing dialogue they’re engaged in, and the spirit of deep collaboration that colors their songwriting as well as their lives at home together. The pair released their debut EP Little Hits in November of 2019, establishing their unique brand of “off-kilter indie” (The Deli).
Their sophomore EP, Choose Your Own Apocalypse, is a collection of songs about finding someone special to share the end-times with. They started writing and recording the EP back in the summer of 2016, as events were leading up to the election of Donald Trump. Drug Couple decided to make an album based around the concept of falling in love mid-apocalypse without fully realizing that’s exactly what they were doing.
A meditation on the idea of holding on tight to love during the worst of times, the album (as well as their recently released single “Protest Song”) proved to be oddly prescient, written long before 2020 turned out to be one of the scariest and most trying years in recent memory. Drug Couple hopes that their clairvoyance wasn’t causal, though they’d be lying if they said they didn’t feel partially responsible for the disintegration of the very fabric of our society.
Cait Devin is an 18 year old indie/alt pop/rock singer-songwriter from Utica. Although young, this self-described “strummer and shredder” is musically and creatively talented. Cait currently is an independent artist, but recently released her first album and has collaborated with several other artists.
Cait tells NYS Music, “I’ve been singing my whole life, but picked up an acoustic guitar in my mid teens. I began playing lead guitar two and a half years ago and ever since, I’ve spent a lot of my time diving into it more.” Her album, Cait Devin (Unplugged), is entirely acoustic; however, she still spends a lot of time with her electric guitar.
Cait says that “just keep playing” has been her motivational mantra since the start of her career, and she has not disappointed herself. Despite her young age, she “has written hundreds of songs.” When she was just 16, she was a SAMMY’s People’s Choice Award finalist before even having a record out. She won “Extrodinary Talent of the Week” in Syracuse, and, later that year, released her first EP, “Gemini Rising.” Soon after, she booked a tour in Nashville.
Cait frequently uploads original songs and covers of various artists online and proves to have a wide range of talent. She’s covered The Cranberries, MGMT, The Beatles, Slipknot, and more. She’s covered so many artists that she “wouldn’t be able to pick” her favorite. She even remixes famous songs and themes, making them entirely her own. She has entire playlists of covers and originals on YouTube available for free.
Cait writes about her own experiences, saying she draws inspiration from life. “I take random inspiration here and there and just write about it,” she comments. “Some of my influences for my songwriting include Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Grimes, and the Weeknd. As far as my lead playing goes, I would say players like Nita Strauss and Steve Vai.” The great variation in her top influential artists perfectly shows how Cait’s music style and skill are so adaptable. She can blow audiences away with soft acoustic pieces but still shred like a pro. Her powerful and emotional vocals shine brightly in every piece she writes or covers.
Although a young independent artist, Cait’s talent is attracting attention. She’s performed at different venues, and recently went live on the News 12 Facebook page and played two songs from her album, and has previously been featured on top NY radio stations. She has over 2k subscribers on YouTube, and more than 8k followers on Facebook. She’s collabed with Jared Dines, Hiram Hernandez, and more, and recently appeared on the single “Unbroken” by Michael Angelo Batio, along with Vinnie Moore and Andy James. She also has a new, big “shred collab” project in the works, but can’t say much about it. Be sure to follow her for updates!
Boo Riley, a Manhattan-based indie artist, has released a new music video for recent self-titled single “Boo Riley!” The video follows the band through the subway, Tompkins Square Park, and into a gig at Arlene’s Grocery. This rambling video tour of some of New York’s timeless places serves as a little reminder of what New Yorkers can look forward too once the lockdowns end.
This fun yet complex track possesses the detectable influences of the group’s sound. Classic rock, 80’s pop, and indie all blend together for a lovely and uplifting tune.
On the video, Austin Lesch of Boo Riley shares, “I was listening to Wilco’s ‘Wilco (The Song)’ and loved the lyric ‘this is aural arms open wide, a sonic shoulder for you to cry on.’ I wanted to write a song inspired by that line, but with Boo Riley’s perspective. The video is an extension of this. We wanted to visualize what we were trying to do sonically.”
In 2018, songwriter/guitarist Dang Anohen, drummer Lip Molina, guitarist/singer Grace Bergere, rhythm guitarist Jesse James, and bassist Mike Coe formed the NYC rock band, Sallies. Taking their inspiration from Nirvana, The Pixies, Sonic Youth, and Ramones the group congregated around Dang’s songwriting and labored on More of the Same for years leading up to its release in May 2020.
More of the Same opens with “Ain’t My Speed,” which premiered April 6, 2020 as a promotional track for the album. The initial lyrics “Can we pretend that nothing is there, say it offhand be more indirect, everyone’s clad in who gives a fuck, everything passed off with a laugh, can we just look the other way” fits well with the interpreted theme of the lyric video in that modern social media culture is vain and ineffectual. In opposition to this culture, the track continues “I’m going away out of this rat cage where I’ve catered to your every need.”
The second track “Driftwood” is a well-executed cascading manic rant where the influence of Nirvana is palpable. “Substance” is a grinding alternative rock song and in this writer’s opinion a critique of another aspect of our culture, consumerism. This becomes especially apparent with the biting lyrics “Everybody works for their cars.” While “T.V. Dinner” slows down the pace from previous tracks initially, but quickly rises in tempo to continue the album’s critique of entertainment culture and its “Hallmark wisdom.”
“Every Whim” is a track that brings the patina of garage punk to the album. Keeping with the cultural critique tradition of punk, the track speaks on the government with the lyrics “Ill get my paycheck, Don’t care who I’m Stepping on.” The following track “Sunny-Side Up” builds with instrumentals and lyrics that summarize the frustration of an individual fed up with being told how to be, “You gave me water, it never turned to wine, Hey that doesn’t Matter, Waters just fine.” “Touching” also taps into the frustration addressed in “Sunny-Side Up” but with more aggression on the track. The following song “Make Way” provides a solution to the frustration of previous tracks, “I’m in a bad way, I’m gonna make way” and serves as an inspiration to jump off whatever bad track you’re on.
“User-Friendly” represents a jarring protest of organized religion. “Id really like you to change me, Id really like you to brand me, Id really like you to savage me, You know me I’m User-Friendly”. The remaining lyrics paint the church, not as a provider of absolution, but a manipulative entity, a “User”. “Ill Be Fine” is another slow starting track that jumps right into a wave thrashing instrumental sequence. The final track “Half Mast” is a well-executed crescendo that both reinforces the anti-establishment position and talent of the Sallies.
NYC-based dance-pop artist Michael Tapper has released the video for his debut single “Sleep In My Clothes” from his new project Practice. The song and video were both made pre-2020 madness, and yet the themes of isolation and self-quarantine root it (maybe too much) into current reality.
As an accomplished drummer and indie rock lifer (Tapper was previously the drummer of We Are Scientists, BishopAllen, Fool’s Gold and Yellow Ostrich), Tapper’s point of self-discovery that led to the creation of his album Not a Game took place in 2013, when he headed out on a 28-day sailing trip from Mexico to Hawaii with his brother-in-law. The album Not a Game represents an exciting new chapter in his career as well as the beginning of something else entirely — a fresh start, sonically and perspective-wise.
The moniker of Practice itself was borne out of this constant, self-exploratory toil, along with a connection to the practice of meditation itself. NBA legend Allen Iverson’s infamous “practice” speech was another inspiration for the project’s name, and the speech itself is showcased over the rippling synths and hissing snares of album centerpiece “Practice.”
Speaking about “Sleep In My Clothes” Tapper explains the song’s message on the struggles he’s encountered during this global pandemic:
Like everyone, coronavirus has upended my life and consumed probably the majority of my waking energy for the past month or so. My wife is a doctor in Manhattan, so we started quarantining before most people (when she’s not at work), concerned that she might bring it home from the hospital and not wanting to spread it to our friends or neighborhood. Our fears were founded because we did get it early, but thankfully our symptoms were mild. During this quarantine time, I was able to finish up preparing this music video for release. As I showed it to a few people, one friend mentioned that it embodies things we’re feeling during this isolation period. As one friend put it: “the vibe of the “Sleep In My Clothes” video is how I feel on a bad day during this quarantine — crying my mascara off (if I even had the will to put any on).”
The video starts very literally with me waking up in all of my clothes and walking out the door, which is the first verse of the song, but then takes it a step further by diving into a pool fully clothed. Later, the character experiences a sort of baptismal rebirth transformation, ending up completely naked, which is a literal reference to the lyrics but also a metaphor for honesty and vulnerability, which is what’s happening lyrically at the same time.

Boyfriends Greg Driscoll and Brendan Eprile bring a unique blend of energy and open-mindedness to pop-rock. Add some blues and elements of Broadway and you’re in for a sound that is both fun and meaningful. The duo come from New York City and are building quite the following in the surrounding areas having even played a planned parenthood benefit in my hometown of Bennington, VT. Having pumped up audiences with their powerful and well-crafted tunes, they continue to challenge the status quo of today’s cultural scene.
Here is a band that likes to explore new territory, drawing influences from bluegrass, folk, punk, metal, and hip-hop. That said, experimentation is their mission and they don’t associate themselves with any particular sound or genre. They go boldly into uncharted territory and take a new approach with every song. Triumphant anthems, soulful ballads, and edgy fusions of alt pop, rock, and funk… it’s all there. Just dare them not to try it. Double. Dog. Dare them. CANVAS believes nothing is certain and all you have to do is take a listen to their ever-evolving hybrid sound to see what they mean.
Miserable Chillers’ new album Audience of Summer has been released today, Friday, August 7. Chillers’ songs primarily deal with growth and exploration, especially as climate change irreversibly alters our natural landscape.
Miserable Chillers is a baroque pop project created by Miguel Gallego. While Gallego previously released three EPs, Audience of Summer is his full-length debut album. Its release was preceded by three singles: “La nave del olvido,” “The Glass,” and the album opener, “Saga’s Sword.” Made up of nine short tracks, Audience of Summer is a deeply pleasant listening experience that floats right by.
Despite Gallego’s gloomy pseudonym, many of the songs are cool and upbeat, especially early on in the album. “Saga’s Sword” in particular has a beachy quality (further accentuated by the album cover), whereas vaporwave influences reign supreme on “La nove del olvido.” This is most likely intentional: vaporwave tends to satirize consumerism, and the track is about finding wrappers, plastic bags, and other eco-unfriendly debris on the ocean floor. The album track “Card Captor” is also a standout, in which Gallego’s vocals channel Imogen Heap over mesmerizing synths.
Although a Brooklynite, Miguel Gallego grew up in suburban New Jersey. His fascination with nature began with a “bizarrely bucolic” creek in the woods beside his house, which he later discovered was man-made. “[Audience of Summer] is a document of where I was before things changed permanently and abruptly,” Gallego said in a press release. “I feel a personal affection for myself growing as a person and as an artist as I made this.”
Audience of Summer is now available for streaming, as well as on digital album and cassette. 50% of proceeds for the latter formats on Bandcamp are going to Bed-Stuy Strong through August 7. Bed-Stuy Strong is an organization that provides food assistance in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.

Keytracks: Saga’s Sword, La Nave del Olvido, Card Captor
On August 14, Brooklyn-based band Gawn will release their debut album, Thee Essence Ov Everything. The band’s newest single, “Pushed Aside,” is available to stream now.

Thee Essence Ov Everything is the perfect mix of soft, indie, and electric rock. Each song is individually interesting but maintains in harmony with the rest of the record. I had the opportunity to talk to Zach Koeing about Gawn, the band’s soul, about the new track and album.
Marilyn Feerick: How did you first get into music?
Zach Koeing: I started playing music probably when I was 10 years old. I grew up in a house with musicians. My dad was a guitar player and songwriter and he taught me to play guitar.
MF: What does “Pushed Aside” mean to you?
ZK: The meaning of the song and the lyrics is kinda just moving on from old friendships that have faded away, maybe because they’re toxic or people change.
MF: I read that it was hard to get one solid group to consistently do shows, so you play with different people almost every night.
ZK: When the project first started, it was more of just a recording project. It was different friends coming to the studio, handing out, laying down some tracks, writing some songs together, and when it kinda came down to shows, it seemed like a lot of people’s schedules were clashing with each other and stuff like that. So, it just seemed to be a lot less stress ad a lot easier to get a group of guys together on the flay than try to rely on just one group of people.
MF: Is having a rotating band more confusing, or does it help you keep everything more fresh?
ZK: I think it sounds like it would be more confusing, but it does feel like it is fresh because every single time that I sit down with a new group of people, it feels like I’m able to come up with something new and something original. With the same group of guys, it would seem like it would be harder to come up with new stuff. There’s definitely different feels. People play differently, and ideas some of the guys will bring to the table will just be kind of on a whim and it’s just like ‘that was it, let’s keep it,’ and if that guy wasn’t there that night, it wouldn’t have happened.
MF: How has COVID-19 and the quarantine affected you creatively? Are you writing anything new?
ZK: Before COVID, we were talking to our publicist about doing PR and all the promotions and everything for [the album], and out of nowhere, the country was shut down and we were kinda just like ‘oh no what are we gonna do? Are we gonna tour, should the record come out, should we go with it?’ And especially during the black lives matter protests, we didn’t want to be shining any light on us when there’s something more important going on. So we decided to basically just put it on the back burner until we started to find out what was going on in the world. During that time I had a little four track recorder at my house that I sat next to, like, every morning and every night just writing new ideas, because we weren’t working or anything so we were just kinda adjusting…to being home all the time. And I had my own little recording setup. So, I recorded about 30 new ideas on a four track during quarantine.
MF: And lastly, do you have any plans for projects once quarantine is over?
ZK: Me and the guys recorded two new songs probably like a month ago, so we plan on releasing probably a seven inch after we do the record and then hopefully next year we’ll be able to tour.
