  • Annie in the Water and Hayley Jane Teaming Up for ‘Rumors’ Tour

    Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors is one of rock’s iconic albums. Annie in the Water and Hayley Jane will be joining forces this winter to pay tribute to this classic album.

    The Hayley in the Water Spread Rumors Tour begins Feb. 5 at the Waterhole in Saranac Lake and wraps in Burlington at Higher Ground. The tour will visit cities throughout the Northeast from Buffalo to Hartford, CT. Stops include Flour City Station in Rochester, the Buffalo Iron Works, Stone Church in Brattleboro, VT and the Disruption Network‘s third-anniversary party in Utica.

    The full-set tribute to Rumors will be sandwiched between sets of original music from both acts, beginning with an acoustic solo set from Burlington’s Hayley Jane. Annie in the Water closes each show with Hayley Jane sitting in.

    Hayley Jane has recently collaborated with Ryan Montbleau in the duo Yes Darling, a project that presents a whimsical take on relationships with a Vaudevillian vibe. Her solo set draws from folk, blues, musical theater, and ’60s and ’70s pop and rock. Her performance of “The Chain” with Montbleau and moe. at the 2017 moe.down was one of the highlights of that weekend.

    Annie in the Water released its latest album Time to Play in June of this year. This is the band’s second album overall and first since the 2011 debut Destination. They’re riding a wave of tremendous success in 2019 which saw them performing at several festivals, including headlining Woods Fest in Westernville, NY this past August and the Shakori Hills Festival of Music and Dance in Pittsboro, NC in October.

    Prior to the February Hayley in the Water tour, Annie in the Water will finish the year with a two-date New Year’s run that has them performing at the official moe. post-party, the Hometown Throwdown Dec. 30 at The Sanctuary in Utica with special guests. They’ll ring in the new year with Raisinhead at the High Peaks Resort Ballroom in Lake Placid. Tickets for both shows are available now.

  • The Brother Brothers are Double the Fun at Arbor Loft

    Adam and David Moss are identical twins. But don’t talk to them about that, they’ve heard all the twin jokes and comments and they’re sick of it. Though since they commented in jest about the Rochester weather, a subject us locals have heard every angle on, they’ll have to forgive us for dabbling in some twin talk here.

    The brothers Moss make up the folk duo under the clever moniker The Brother Brothers. They were in town last week at the Arbor Loft as the latest artist brought in by Honest Folk. The two played a two-set, two-hour show that turned out to be both a night of folk songs and a bit of comedy too.

    The show was filled with characters, like the “Ocean’s Daughter,” the “Notary Public,” “The Gambler,” “Mary Ann,” and “Frankie,” as well as places like their hometown “Cairo, IL,” “Colorado,” and Peter Rowan’s “Angel Island.” Person, place or thing, it all came to life through Adam and David’s impossibly perfect harmonies. It was almost as if they were harmonizing as one person, no studio trickery required. Add in some exquisite playing on guitar, fiddle and cello and The Brother Brothers present a uniquely tight nugget of acoustic music mastery. The setlist drew from their debut EP (2017’s Tugboats) and LP (2018’s Some People I Know), and also included a few brand new tunes that should see a release some time next year.

    The inter-song banter was almost as entertaining as their playing and song craft. Playing off each other, and at times the crowd, some seemed more rehearsed while most were clearly off the cuff. Subjects ran the gamut from global warming, flat eartherism, the dearth of good Hanukah music, and running sound at concerts.

    For the encore, the pair came back for their brotherly take on Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” that was the perfect capstone to a lovely evening.

    Upon hearing the announcement of the next Honest Folk show, the brothers seemed outright jealous of Rochester’s opportunity to see JUNO award winner William Prince, a folk singer from Winnipeg. He’ll be taking the stage January 13 at Good Luck. Tickets are on sale now. Also just announced is the great Joe Pug who will be at Good Luck on February 17.

  • Hearing Aide: Treasure Plate ‘Engine Core Phenomenal’

    Galactic space travelers Treasure Plate have traversed time and space to send a message in the form of a rock opera of epic proportions. The self-professed blue collar cybernetic spacemen from somewhere in the 4000th millennium forewarn of a future filled with the dangers of space travel, encounters with hostile alien life, and harrowing narrow escapes on their album Engine Core Phenomenal.

    The audio recording conveys the cosmic story, alternating between songs and narrative segments that push the story line forward. The band is comprised of a mix of sci-fi fans and a theater major, and the full effect of the story is best felt during their performances in full costume with special effects.

    Whether it’s live or recorded, the story of space travelers under siege is a great escape from our run-of-the-mill modern day problems. But then again, some things never change, like the yearning to explore the outside world in order to discover ourselves. As they sing in the final verse of the album, “It’s who you are, it’s how we grow / It’s now where we’re gonna go.”

    Treasure Plate is Brian McCormick on guitar, Ryan Kinal on bass, Luke Cornwell on keyboards, and Joshua Lownberger on drums. They brought a host of friends into the studio for backup on several tracks. Engine Core Phenomenal was recorded and mastered by Jesse Sprinkle at Bluebrick Studios.

  • Hearing Aide: The Stedwells ‘Hideout’

    With their 2018 EP, Rochester rockers The Stedwells announced they were coming of age with the title I’m Too Tall For My Time Machine These Days. It begged the question, what happens now that they’re all grown up? What comes next for the trio after “Body Shots” and “Pipe Dreams”? The answer came this fall in the form of their new EP Hideout.

    When you’re too tall for your time machine, you’re finally mature enough to play in the big leagues. This time they’ve gone with not just one, but two Grammy-winning engineers – Stephen Roessner (Recording Engineer) and Dave Collins (Mastering Engineer). They also had assistance from award-winning Mixer Joseph Chudyk.

    Even without the glossy sheen applied by the dream team of audio engineers, brothers Ryan and Brendan Warren and their friend Alex Durr work together like a well-oiled machine. The new songs play to their strengths. Anchored by a rocking beat, they dig into high energy riffs reminiscent of The Black Keys, The Strokes, and even Arctic Monkeys (minus the cheeky lyrics). Over the top of the instrumentation, lead vocalist Ryan serves lyrics with catchy pop hooks that will have you singing along in no time.

  • First Headliners Announced for 2020 Rochester International Jazz Festival

    Festival organizers have released the names of the first three headliners for the 2020 Rochester International Jazz Festival. They are Nile Rodgers & Chic; A Celebration of 50 Years, Garth Fagan Dance with Monty Alexander Sextet; and Spyro Gyra. Tickets go on sale Friday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. at RochesterJazz.com . Three and nine-day Club Passes are also on sale now.

    The 020 Rochester International Jazz Festival will be held June 19 to 27, 2020 in multiple indoor and outdoor venues in downtown Rochester. All headlining shows are held at 8 p.m. at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre.

    Nile Rodgers & Chic take the stage on Friday, June 26. Garth Fagan Dance will celebrate 50 years of dance at the CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival performing with long-time friend, Monty Alexander and his Sextet, on Wednesday, June 24. And returning for the first time since 2003 is contemporary jazz icons Spyro Gyra.

  • Tough Old Bird to Finish out the Year with Two WNY Shows

    Tough Old Bird has spent the fall on tour promoting their latest album, The Old Great Lakes. They finish out 2019 with a couple shows close to home. You’ll find them at Nietzche’s in Buffalo on Friday, Dec. 6 and at Mission Hall in Rochester on Saturday, Dec. 14.

    The brotherly duo of Matthew and Nathan Corrigan has been performing under the name Tough Old Bird for the better part of the decade. Their latest release is a concept album that weaves together an array of musical influences and lyrical narratives around the central theme of area waterways.

    In an interview earlier this year, Nathan told NYS Music, “I think we’ve had a tendency in the past to think of ourselves as a folk band, and with this album I think it was more important to be open to anything, and not worry about what genre it was or whether it sounded like some abstract idea of how we were supposed to sound.”

  • Listen to the Soulful “Holding Me Down” by Danielle Ponder

    Rochester native Danielle Ponder, former public defender and now full time musician, has released her latest single “Holding Me Down.” Rife with emotion, “Holding Me Down” shares the pain and struggle found in relationships, and is the lead track on her upcoming album, due in Spring 2020.

    Ponder says of the upcoming album:

    This album is probably my most vulnerable work. I wrote this song one night at 2 am sitting at my dining room table. This song describes the struggle many have in relationships, the struggle between a heart that want to stay and a mind that want to go.

    Danielle has spent the past few years rendering goose bumps by perfecting her style, with charismatic performance. The result of her focus and dedication is a tone that is both enchanting and seductive, along with a riveting, honest stage presence. Her voice has helped secure gigs opening for powerhouses such as George Clinton, Ledisi and The Roots.

    “Holding me Down” was produced by John Viviani, whom Danielle Ponder previously worked with in the band Filthy Funk, with additional production by Dave Drago at his 1809 Studios. The song also features Tony Gallicho from Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad on organ.

    Danielle Ponder has an upcoming show on January 31 in Rochester. This special acoustic show will be open to only 300 attendees and will be held in the oldest building in Rochester. More details will be shared through Ponder’s website.

  • More than a dozen Jam for Tots shows planned across New York State this holiday season

    NYS Music is proud to announce 15 Jam for Tots shows around the Empire State this holiday season. Kicking off on November 27, each show will have a Toys for Tots box set up for patrons to donate gifts to kids in need.

    With a wide variety of artists, including Consider the Source, Runaway Gin, Annie in the Water, Tim Herron Corporation, Strange Machines, and Swedish metal guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen, this annual series will connect live music fans with those most in need in their local communities.

  • In Focus: Kip Moore Brings Room to Spare Tour to Kodak Center

    Kip Moore’s stop at the Kodak Center in Rochester, NY on October 25 was the second of two New York shows on the third leg of his Room to Spare Acoustic Tour.

    Moore is known for his energetic and electric shows. On this tour, he switched gears with an intimate and stripped-down set. For a number of his songs it was just Moore and his guitar which was refreshing to see – and one could clearly tell he was at home on stage with no frills or thrills. The commentary he had behind the meaning of the songs he sang was among the highlights of getting to see him perform in this acoustic setting.

    Moore performed for over two hours and sang fan favorites like “Hey Pretty Girl,” “Guitar Man,” “More Girls Like You,” “Something About a Truck” and “The Bull.” He also did songs from the Room to Spare acoustic EP including “Love You to the Moon” and “Plead the Fifth.”

    The Room to Spare Acoustic Tour continues this week in Durham, NC and runs through December.

    Moore’s new single “She’s Mine” can be heard here and will be featured on his upcoming fourth studio album. Details for the album’s release haven’t been announced but are due to be revealed in the coming weeks on kipmoore.net.

  • Tommy Stinson Lines Up NY Mini-Tour for December

    Tommy Stinson is currently on a run of solo shows throughout Spain, leading up to a Montreal appearance at a 40th-anniversary celebration of The Clash’s seminal London Calling album called Montreal Calling on Dec. 6. Following that show, which also features Alejandro Escovedo, Jesse Malin, and the Asexuals, Stinson will embark on a brief tour of unique venues across New York.

    Stinson, perhaps best known as the snotty young bassist for the should-have-been-more-famous ne’er-do-wells known as The Replacements and as Duff McKagan’s replacement in Guns N’ Roses for 16 years, is currently working on several other projects, including a new solo album, the follow-up to his band Bash & Pop‘s 2017 album Anything Could Happen and an album with his other project Cowboys in the Campfire.

    While returning to his home in Hudson, he will run through a series of “living room” shows across New York, beginning in somebody’s actual living room in Hamburg, just outside of Buffalo on Dec. 10. Stinson then winds his way east, visiting the famous Bop Shop Records in Rochester on Dec. 11 and Wildflowers Armory, a unique art space in Armory Square in Syracuse on Dec. 12, and finishing up at Barry Family Cellars in the Finger Lakes town of Burdett. on Dec. 13. Tickets for all but the Hamburg show are available through Eventbrite and range from $25 for a general admission ticket to $100 for a limited “Drinks With Tommy” ticket.
