  • NYC Brazilian/American Alt-Rock Band, Added Color Release New EP ‘Mr. Industry’

    Brooklyn-based Brazilian/American rock band Added Color have released a their second EP Mr. Industry, featuring a unique blend of funk-infused alternative rock. The five-track release pulls on their Brazilian roots with pulsating energy and blend together a myriad of sounds, genres and inspiration into the album.

    Based in Brooklyn, Dan (drums/vocals) and Kiko Freiberg (guitar/vocals), are brothers hailing from São Paulo, Brazil, and joined forces with Tim Haggerty and Danny Dahan, for a fusion of backgrounds to form the band’s unique chemistry. Embracing and celebrating their widespread connections, the band has toured across the U.S. and toured internationally in Canada, Morocco and Brazil.

    Mr. Industry comes as a reflection and personification of the current state of the music and arts industry. “The character (Mr. Industry) represents the corporate mentality that has taken over the industry in a time where it is going through a crisis,” said Added Color. “Mr. Industry cares only about putting artists in a creative box and marketing them. Basically, if you sound like everyone else, it’s easier to associate you to other acts and sell you. The idea behind the EP connects with our overall message, which is about being yourself at all times no matter what. Mr. Industry is the force that we are fighting against as we live for honest and original music.”  Mr. Industry was recorded at state of the art Silver Cord Studios in Brooklyn, NY by Jamie Uertz (Blind Melon) and Grammy nominated Johann Meyer (Gojira/Roadrunner Records).

    The video for “‘Same Place’ documents their 2017 Spring Tour of Morocco, during which they played seven shows in seven different cities. The video’s trippy feel matches the theme of the song, which is about a dream in a dystopia where people conform to social norms and obligations as they get older.

    Added Color will return to Morocco later this month, for a week-long string of dates, followed by a series of U.S. tour dates kicking off in late May. Stay tuned for the animated music video for “Panic Attack” coming soon.

  • The Black Dahlia Murder Kicks Off Tour

    Detroit’s melodic death metal band, The Black Dahlia Murder, have hit the road recently, and are set to visit over 40 cities across North America on their tour.

    The tour will take place in two parts, first seeing support from Homewrecker for the first twelve dates, starting in Minnesota and ending June 1 at Ground Zero in Traverse, MI. After a small break, the band will then head out with Whitechapel, Fleshgod, Apocalypse, Aversions Crown, and Shadow of Intent starting on June 8 in Chicago.

    The second portion of the tour will make two stops in New York, first on June 13, at Funk N’ Waffles in Rochester, and June 15, at Stage 48 in NYC.

    Formed in 2001, The Black Dahlia Murder has released eight studio albums, including 2017’s Nighbringers. The band’s last seven releases have charted on the Billboard 200, with the last five reaching inside the top 50 on the Billboard 200 chart.

  • The Space at Westbury to host May 24 forum “State of the Long Island Music Scene” Or “Are Tribute Bands Taking All the Gigs?”

    On May 24 at 7:30pm, The Space at Westbury will host a discussion forum with 15 panelists from across Long Island to discuss a pressing topic in the music scene across the Island – are tribute bands taking all the gigs?

    This topic could be discussed anywhere across the state, let alone the country, and has hit a chord in Long Island, where tribute bands and cover bands are keeping original music out of the clubs. Articles such as this from Newsday in April shine a light on the prevalence of tribute acts over local, original bands.

    The effort to put the Long Island music scene under a microscope is no small endeavor, and Great South Bay Music Festival promoter Jim Faith has organized this one night discussion to get to the heart of the problem. Panelists include working original artists & tribute bands, artists that play in both original and tribute acts, venue owners, media representatives, and Jim Faith serving as host of the evening.

    Included on the panel are Glenn Gamboa (Newsday), Michael Delguidice (Michael Delguidice Band), Ian Kenny (King Neptune, NGHBRS), Joe Rock (Radio celebrity/DJ), Katie Pearlman (The Joni Project/Katie Pearlman Band), Michael ‘Eppy’ Epstein (Owner: My Father’s Place), Dan Welch (Owner: 89 North, Suffolk Recording Studio) and many more.

    The night kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with a goal of lively dialogue on the state of the scene, the realities that all artists and venues face, and how collectively, we can make it better.   • New York, The Silk City: Governors Ball 2018

    Premier northeast music festival The Governors Ball returns to Randall’s Island in New York City in just a few weeks, taking place from Friday, June 1 through Sunday, June 3, 2018. GA weekend and single day tickets for each day are still available, but maybe not for long as various ticket packages, such as Sunday and Saturday GA tickets, are very close to being sold out. In just seven years running, Governors Ball has made a fast ascension to becoming one of New York City’s most anticipated annual music events, featuring a more savory lineup of artists with each passing summer. NYS Music will be there to bring you coverage of the 2018 festival.

    The biggest news surrounds the festival’s heavy headliners. Rock virtuoso Jack White will be making a return to the event, having not played there since 2014. Last time White graced the Gov Ball stage, they matched his set with a same time performance from Skrillex. This year the tossup is with James Blake, the pianist, producer and soul singer who’s won the hearts of everybody, from Beyonce to Rick Rubin. If you haven’t heard, Blake just released a collaboration with Andre3000. Get on it.

    Saturday night, in turn, will be capped off by a real rock gem. As a celebration of the ten-year anniversary of their second studio release, The 59 Sound, The Gaslight Anthem will be performing the record in its entirety. Full performances of albums are a live music treat that fans should experience if the opportunity presents itself.

    Then there’s the act we’re all probably buzzing about, Silk City. Diplo, reigning favorite of the electronic dance music world, and Mark Ronson, the producer that can do no wrong, have teamed up to make a new collaborative disco album. Governors Ball is your chance to see the duo make their first ever live performance. Travis Scott, who has collaborated with Diplo’s project Major Lazer and also shared the stage with Ronson at last year’s Gov Ball, will be dropping his set immediately after Silk City—so this is keying up to be a weekend for Governor’s fans to remember.

    But if there’s anyone that’s truly taking over the festival spotlight, it’s Eminem. Boston Calling, Bonnaroo, Firefly, and of course Gov Ball — the famed rapper is headlining them all. The last occurring slot time on Sunday night is reserved solely for him, so you can bet pretty much all eyes at the Ball will be on Slim.

    As in past years, Gov Ball will be showcasing some of the most buzz-worthy, up-and-coming bands currently making noise across the indie, pop, rock and hip hop circuits. Across each of these mainstream genres, artists can go from fresh on the scene to topping the charts in no time. And on the way there, many of them seem to pass through Randall’s Island with dynamite festival sets. At this year’s Gov Ball, artists rocking this category are the likes of alt rockers Wolf Alice, country sensation Margo Price, breakout singer Billie Ellish and more. Special mention here: Belly. If you want to talk about a comeback, the Rhode Island-based alt punk band reunited in 2016 and, this month, just released their first album in twenty years, Dove, and it rocks.

    That doesn’t even cover all of the musical goodness flooding Randall’s Island in three weeks. Hip hop supergroup N.E.R.D and NYC’s own Yeah Yeah Yeah’s are two other highly anticipated sets, given that they both have made huge reunions in the past year, while most others might be excited for the recently announced special set by Shawn Mendes.

    The party will keep going for some after-hours concerts as part of The Governors Ball After Dark. Comprised mostly of the acts performing at the festival, this series of shows kicks off Thursday, May 30 and goes through the weekend at venues throughout the boroughs.     Aside from the music, Gov Ball is once again featuring close to 60 NYC-area food vendors with plenty of delicious tastes for everybody, including gluten-free and vegan options. More “deats” on the eats can be found here.

  • Night Lights Music Festival 2018 Full Lineup Announced

    This year’s Night Lights Music Festival will feature music on three stages on the weekend of August 23-26, 2018. For the eighth year in a row, The Heron in the town of Sherman will be transformed into a spectacle of lights and sounds. The lineup includes the music of Lotus, Motet, Aqueous and more. Several tribute sets are also scheduled: Wild Adriatic (Led Zeppelin), Space Junk (Disco Biscuits) and Psychedelic Jukebox (paying homage to the history of psychedelic rock).

    Among the other acts are Wild Adriatic, Intrepid Travelers, Root Shock, lespecial, Folkfaces, and Danielle Ponder & the Tomorrow People. In addition to music, festival-goers will be able to enjoy camping, yoga, hiking, swimming and other outdoor activities. Local food and beverages and arts & crafts vendors will be on site. Early bird tickets are on sale now through the festival website.

  • AJ Lambert, Frank Sinatra’s granddaughter, releases cover of Spoon’s “I Summon You,” will headline Rough Trade NYC

    AJ Lambert, granddaughter of Frank Sinatra and daughter of Nancy Sinatra, has released “I Summon You” from her forthcoming album, Careful You, out later this year. The record features unique interpretations of songs by artists including TV on the Radio, John Cale, Spoon (“I Summon You”) as well as deep cuts from her grandfather’s extensive catalog including “Sleep Warm” and “I’ll Be Seeing You.” She’ll perform selections from Careful You at an exclusive album preview show at Rough Trade NYC on May 25.

    Britt Daniel of Spoon, regarding Lambert’s cover remarked, “If you’re gonna cover someone else’s song, you’d better be prepared to add something to it that wasn’t there before, and it’s equally important to find a way to bring your own personality to the performance. Otherwise what’s the point — in today’s world, the original version is always readily accessible via the chips embedded into the backs of our skulls. Fortunately, AJ’s managed to do both with her reworking of “I Summon You.” It’s a trip to hear my song done this way. Thanks, AJ.”

    Careful You was recorded with a full band and produced by Daniel Schlett (The War on Drugs, Amen Dunes) and Boshra AlSaadi (TEEN, Janka Nabay) and is due out later this year and will be followed by a tour in support of the album.

    AJ is currently performing complete Sinatra albums live, such as In The Wee Small Hours, with John Boswell on piano. AJ also hosts “Third Generation” on Sirius XM’s “Siriusly Sinatra” channel.

  • Americana Music Award Nominees Announced

    On May 15 in Nashville, The Americana Music Association announced the nominees for its 17th annual Honors & Awards. The winners of each category will be announced during the Americana Honors & Awards show on September 12, 2018 at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. The celebrated program is the hallmark event of AMERICANAFEST: The Americana Music Festival & Conference, which runs from September 11-16, 2018

  • Gov’t Mule Announces Summer Dates

    Gov’t Mule has announced their 2018 summer tour, hitting Wantagh and Lewiston, New York. The Warren Haynes led rock band finished up their spring tour at the New Orleans Jazz Festival.

    The band is coming off their 10th studio album and highest selling debut, 2017’s Revolution Come… Revolution Go. The album is one of the band’s most politically driven pieces to date.

    Mule will also make it’s way over to Europe where they will be headlining the “Gov’t Mule Dark Side of the Mule & Avett Brothers shows.” The bands will play a string of three shows throughout Europe where Gov’t Mule will perform Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon along with the Avett Brothers.

  • Phish Fall Tour to kick off in Albany at Times Union Center

    The last time Phish came to Albany, they dropped a legendary “Seven Below” -> “Ghost,” one of the defining jams of the 3.0 era. Today, Phish has announced a 14-date Fall Tour kicking off October 16 with two nights in Albany, NY at the Times Union Center, and concluding with a four-night Halloween Run, beginning on October 31, at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The tour also includes three-night stands in Chicago, IL, Hampton, VA and two nights in Nashville, TN.

  • The Rochester Residency Rambles on with Kurt Johnson in May

    Are you hip to the Rochester Residency yet? If not, you should be. And May would be as good a time as any to start. Each month, a different local musician owns the stage at Three Heads Brewing every Thursday. Artists are free to use the nights however they wish. May belongs to Kurt Johnson, guitarist from the bands Maybird and Moho Collective among others.

    He got his residency month off to a fun and rollicking start this past Thursday by hosting a Midnight Ramble, at the more sane hour of 8pm, but in the spirit of the southern jam sessions of yore. The evening included a large portion of the other Rochester Residency hosts from previous months and from the months yet to come. January’s Fran Broderick lead the band on Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers Guns and Money,” February’s Charlie Lindner joined in on keys for about half the set, July’s Eli Flynn brought the house down with a show-closing rendition of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come,” August’s James Searl lead a searing rendition of David Bowie’s “Man Who Sold the World,” September’s Matt Ramerman snuck in drum duties for the encore of “I Shall Be Released,” November’s Wil McKenna held down the low end for most of the night, and December’s Brian McDonald lit up the room with a fun playing of Jackson Browne’s “Doctor My Eyes.” The night played out like a great review of the first four months and an even better preview of the next 8.

    In addition to fellow residents, Johnson had many more friends join in on the fun. Moho Collective’s Ryan Barclay manned the drums for the whole night. Eric Carlin, from the Flood, joined on guitar and vocals for much of the night. Kris Schramm, Willy O’Reilly, Ben Rossi, Alan Murphy and Brian Blatt all got in on the action as well. But it was still Johnson’s night. And so it will be Johnson’s month. And because he chose May for it’s 5 Thursdays, and because he had to unexpectedly miss the first Thursday, he’s extending his Residency into the first week of June.
