  • Fishbone Reunited at the Fairfield Theater Company

    It was an interesting night for all of those that attended the Fairfield Theater Company on March 23. Most guests were obvious die hard fans of the eclectic group. People of all different ages were dressed for the occasion, bobbed their heads to every song, mouthed out lyrics and moshed their way through the center of the floor. But those who were unaware of the strange nature of Fishbone, seemed to be unpleasantly surprised by the brash and outrageous group.  Eight band members mobbed the stage, which was just a few too many for the venue to hold – there always seemed to be a competition between instruments and voices. It didn’t seem to bother those who were familiar with the music because they were recognizable inflections, but there were times when it was hard to make out the melody being sung from horn section, which made up a third of the band.

    The group is known for their diverse musical styles and tones. They range from funky and technical ska, to bold and brash thrash. But different venues work well for different bands and genres. For example, seeing Metallica at the Blue Note wouldn’t be very fitting, nor would putting John Coltrane at Red Rocks. This is all an outsider’s point of view as well.  Again, those die hard fans were having the time of their lives. But there were many out of place patrons (ones lacking leather clothing and chains) that left early or lost interest halfway through. Fishbone was undoubtedly very talented and professional and the venue has hosted some incredible shows that were perfect for it’s size,  but they  just didn’t have the space to let Fishbone loose. There were too many sounds and tones to be shoved through their PA system, which ranged from a theremin, to a fret-less acoustic bass guitar. It felt unintelligible at times, which was only true during the heavy parts.

    It wasn’t all indeterminable noise. As stated before, Fishbone is well known for there buck-wild performance and expansive genre selection. They played a well-balanced setlist, oscillating from ska, to punk, hard rock and back over again, so it wasn’t a constant barrage of sound the entire night. Ska and reggae styled songs like “Unyielded Conditioning”  were very well done. Each instrument could be heard clearly and it was enjoyable for everyone. But songs similar to “In The Cube” a ten minute hard rock/metal track about sitting on the toilet, were musically all over the place and contained too many tone variations for the sound system to handle, especially during the heavier parts.

    Again, no one was at fault here. The Fairfield Theater Company is a fantastic venue with a huge stage, open area, and Fishbone and Rebuilder, the opening act, did their jobs and did them well. Rebuilder is a punk/ rock band out of Boston Massachusetts and gave 100 percent. Their sound was a little familiar, pulling out all the stops listeners would expect from a punk band. But it was reassuring to see that genre of music still thriving.  Fishbone gave it their absolute all as well because this is the first time all of the original members have shared a stage for sometime. But somethings aren’t meant to go together. Like pineapple on pizza – great for some people, but just not a good mix for others. And when a band is trying to make a come back like they were, they need to appeal to as many people as possible, and a more intimate venue in central Fairfield was not the place to gain a larger audience.

    This may seem like the interpretation of an older, less tolerant soul. But rest assured, loud and brash music is still fantastic to see live, but only in the proper setting. Fishbone is a group known specifically for their wild performances, but just be sure to see them in the right venue to give listener’s ears some space to enjoy the music instead of leaving them ringing.

  • Taking Back Sunday to Tour with Every Time I Die

    Taking Back Sunday announced a summer tour with Every Time I Die that will be book ended by dates in New York, opening in New York City and closing out in Utica and Buffalo.

    taking back sundayLong Island’s Taking Back Sunday will head out on tour this summer with Buffalo metalcore act Every Time I Die. The 28 night tour takes them across the country and back, kicking off at New York City’s Webster Hall on July 14 and closing out on Aug. 19 with a hometown show for Every Time I Die at the Waiting Room Summer Stage in Buffalo. They make one other New York stop on Aug. 18 at the Saranac Brewery in Utica. The only other Northeast dates are July 16 at the House of Blues in Boston and Aug. 16 at Stage AE in Pittsburgh.

    Joining Taking Back Sunday and Every Time I Die are New Jersey’s Modern Chemistry for the first half of the tour and South Carolina’s All Get Out for the second half. Every Time I Die will be absent from the shows on July 20 and 22 in Orlando and Jacksonville, Florida, respectively.

    Prior to the start of the tour with Every Time I Die, Taking Back Sunday will perform at the Great South Bay Music Festival in Patchogue. New Found Glory, 311 and Saves the Day also play the festival.

    As part of the summer tour, the band is offering VIP passes that give fans early entrance into the shows, a VIP laminate and lanyard, an embossed journal and bookmark and access to an acoustic set. The VIP tickets are on sale now through the band’s website. General tickets for the summer tour go on sale Friday, March 24 at 10 a.m.

  • Phish Announces Additional Summer Tour Dates

    Phish has added 8 additional shows to their 2017 Summer Tour in the cities of Chicago, Dayton, Pittsburgh, and Commerce City, CO. In between, Phish has 13 shows lined up for a Baker’s Dozen at Madison Square Garden over the course of July 21 through August 6.

    The shows in Chicago will be held at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island July 14–16. The band then heads east to the historic Nutter Center in Dayton, OH on July 18 and then to Pittsburgh, PA to perform at the Petersen Events Center on July 19.

    After taking a break for a few weeks in August, Phish closes out the summer as they have since 2011 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO, September 1-3.

  • Hearing Aide: Foxtrot & The Get Down ‘Roots Too Deep’

    Philadelphia rockers Foxtrot & The Get Down have had their share of success between touring and playing hometown shows in the city. The February 24 release of their full length album Roots Too Deep finds the band creating a more focused sound with nostalgic lyrics and high energy blues/rock songs. Lead singer and songwriter Colin Budny has a voice that was clearly meant to be paired with pristine rock guitar tones. Erica Ruiz provides the background vocals, fitting perfectly between Budny’s voice and the band’s driving rock melodies.

    The first track “Postal” is a great intro to the album, but the second track is where the good stuff begins. “Roll Down The Road” is the anthem song, tugging at your urge to sing it loud and proud. Ruiz and Budny have the perfect duet of voices that can instantly make listeners smile. Blues rock bands often fall back on familiar habits, but Foxtrot & The Get Down have developed their own style without totally losing that thing that makes a good band great. “Roll Down The Road” is peppered with catchy lyrics and is a fantastic representation of what the band is striving to show their audience.

    “Letter To Myself” slows it down a bit, opening with a guitar riff very reminiscent of Led Zeppelin. The song features Ruiz singing lead, with a voice that is the perfect mix of sultry and strong. The lyrics are a perfect reminder of what not to do, providing a fantastic build up to a guitar solo that bursts open the song at the seams.

    Track seven “Ramblin’ Back To You” switches up the genre a bit, with more of a lighter, Americana feel. If you’re at all a fan of The Eagles, then this is the song that will bring you back to your roots. There really is something for everyone on the album, including rock ballads, love, loss and a yearning for something more. Budny and Ruiz’s harmonies have the ability to really tie certain songs together, providing the perfect backdrop for the rest of the band to shine.

    Foxtrot & The Get Down currently share their time between the City of Brotherly Love and Nashville, where they were recently signed to indie record label American Echo records in 2015. There aren’t currently any tour dates listed, but keep an eye on their Facebook page and website for upcoming shows.

  • Primus and Clutch Announce Summer Tour

    Primus has announced a slate of dates for July and August.  The band takes to the road with special guest Clutch starting July 17 in Charlotte.primus clutch

    Claypool and company have only announced one stop in New York State, July 21 at the Dome in Henrietta, just outside of Rochester. The two-month long tour includes a variety of stops across the country including eastern dates. in Raleigh, Detroit, Lancaster, Boston, Portland (Maine), Burlington, Asbury Park, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The July 27 show in Burlington is a part of the Lake Champlain Festival, which also includes Twiddle’s Tumble Down Festival.

    The tour heads to the midwest and west coast in August with dates in  Milwaukee, Mankato, Cedar Rapids, Kansas City, Dallas, Tempe, Las Vegas, Bonner, Troutdale, Eugene, Seattle and Stateline before closing the tour at the Greek in Berkeley on the 18th.

    According to Clutch’s website, both bands will be performing full sets with no openers or supporting acts.

    Tickets for these newly announced shows go on sale this Friday, March 24 at 10 a.m. local time. A pre-sale begins Tuesday, March 21 at 12 p.m. ET via Primus’s website.

  • South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors Amaze the Quick Center

    It was an absolute honor and pleasure to see this iconic group of musicians Ladysmith Black Mambazo play such a humble venue as the Quick Center in Fairfield, CT. They were not only baffling to listen to, they were visually astounding. Dressed in brightly colored shirts, dark pants and white shoes, they danced around in unison and improvisationally in the most entertaining way. They were well rehearsed, full of energy and had a  great sense of humor. 

    Those not familiar with the group might recognize them from the highly respected Paul Simon album, Graceland, among a plethora of other widely recognized artists. More info on the band can be found in an interview with NYS Music and one of the founding members, Albert Mazibuko. Listeners can appreciate the beauty of the music for themselves by finding their copious amount of music available for download on their website, iTunes and Spotify.

    The group consisted of mostly  replacement members and only two members that were with the original group. Taking the place of founding member Joseph Shabalala, were his two sons, Thamsanqa Shabalala and Sibongiseni Shabalala, who were a perfect fit for the group as it moved into it’s sixth decade. Other members included close and extended family, all of whom did an immaculate job.

    Unfortunately, Ladysmith already made their rounds through New York and Connecticut, but they are always touring and will undoubtedly run through the tri-state area again soon.

    Their music wasn’t really the most fascinating part of the show, though. Although it was more than impressive, their presence and personalities made it the extravagant performance that it was. At first, it was almost uncanny how close they sounded to their studio recordings. But what was more astounding was they didn’t need to listen to the key of the song they were going to sing. They just dove right into it and all nine of them were all in sync and on the same key. It goes to show how well rehearsed and passionate they are about about their music as well as what it represents. Some amount of improvisation was used in terms of their singing and dances. The rest of the group would vamp over the chorus while members would take turns stepping forward to center stage and show off some moves. They would perform both native dances as well as some modern and comical moves coming from the younger members.

    They mostly performed songs from their most recent album, Walking In the Footsteps of Our Fathers which they described as a celebration of the group’s past present and future. They said it is a way for the future group to honor the paved path made by their predecessors. They featured many of their own popular recordings like “Awu Wemadoda, “King of Kings” and “Long Walk to Freedom”  as well as some of their most popular songs like “Homeless, and the intro to “Diamonds In the Soles of Her Shoes,” both of which were written alongside Paul Simon. Preceding the songs, members would tell a quick story or explanation behind the creative process and meaning of the songs. These stories clearly gave the audience a better understanding of the songs as well as the visuals performed by all members. The show was stimulating to almost all of the sense and is definitely something everyone should experience in their lifetime.

  • The Radio Dept. Performs at Brighton Music Hall

    The Radio Dept. kicked things off in Boston on Tuesday, March 7, playing to a packed crowd at Brighton Music Hall. The indie dream-pop group from Sweden consists of Johan Duncanson who started making music with Martin Larsson in the late 90s and scored some impressive reviews from NME upon their first album release, Lesser Matters in 2003. For this tour they were backing their newest 2016 album, Running Out of Love, which is their fourth studio album and is a great representation of how The Radio Dept. is able to consistently bust out music within the realms of their niche style they began to perfect back in the early 2000s.

    Swedish Guns” is a clear favorite off their newest record and in the live format the group was able to put on a show with the song in a manner complete with necessary energy yet with the laid back, shoe-gaze nature of The Radio Dept. Actually what makes The Radio Dept. so enticing as a live band and a band on record is their ability to incorporate from so many genres. This is where the keyboards shine as an entirely vital aspect of their somewhat playful sound. Another favorite off their new album has to be “Committed To The Cause,” which has a groove similar to something Thievery Corporation might come out with, matched with a 90s style bass line along the likes of “Cannonball,” by The Breeders. What really makes the song come together is the synth line halfway through – a definite crowd favorite of the night. The chemistry between Duncanson and Larsson is clear on stage as two friends who have been playing together for quite some time are consistently feeding off each other to push and maintain their musical bounds. Sometimes reeling in comparisons to the likes of Pet Shop Boys, The Radio Dept. is a perfect modern, indie, more down tempo version of the 80s legends.

    With a duo opener straight from Brooklyn, GERMANS eased the early birds into the night with vocals and bass performing on top of song samples. Their hit song “Cruel” has everything a modern Brooklyn indie band reminiscent of the 80s could ask for.

  • Hearing Aide: Barika ‘When The Time Comes’

    When is it time to take a step back and reflect? At what point amidst the violence, protest, argument, and confusion perpetuated by the media is it ok for twenty-first century human beings to come to halt from information absorption? Barika, a psychedelic West African influenced band from Burlington, Vermont, aims to satisfy those questions with their album, When the Time Comes.

    Immediately from the beginning of the project, time seems to slow and the reflection begins. Each song in the album is different from the next which at first listen seems disjointed, only connected by the reoccurring horn lines, however when listened to more than once, it is easy to see what Barika is trying to accomplish within this forty-three minute album. Instead of a chronological storyline, as many albums try to convey, When the Time Comes has the aim to come at listeners from all angles with instrumental tracks mixed in with R&B flavored ones and even songs completely comprised of African drumming. There are also strong messages within the album.

    In “Find My Way”, instances of police brutality are highlighted by using examples of Eric Garner’s words “I can’t breathe” said over and over. In addition, Craig Myers, the leader of the band cites Ferguson Missouri and the fatal shooting of native Michael Brown. As the track in the center of the album, Barika chooses to focus on issues that are the most important. This symbolizes the need for society to reflect while at the same time remaining conscious enough to keep a grasp on the harsh and unjust realities that are plaguing society.

    In When the Time Comes, Barika transforms the traditional model of an album by keeping each track different from the one before and after but still tying them all together in the end. It is not music that can be casually listened to but needs to be thoroughly digested to understand what the motives behind it are.   • Catskill Chill Takes Hiatus in 2017

    Catskill Chill festival lovers received a disappointing announcement that the fest is going on hiatus for 2017. Fans have been waiting for an announcement on 2017’s Catskill Chill Festival since the stage lights extinguished on 2016’s festival Sept. 25. Hoping for a lineup and date announcement for 2017, fans received the opposite news instead. Festival lovers can only hope the festival returns in 2018.

    After seven years, Catskill Chill will take a hiatus in 2017. In a post to fans on social media, the Chillfam team reflected on how the festival brought people together and the one of a kind atmosphere that the festival created. The Chillfam team also thanked everyone from fans, vendors, bands/artist, volunteers, venues, promoters and media, who have supported the festival since its inception in September 2010.

    One thing the festival promoters did not state in the post was why the festival would not take place, just stating that they needed to take a step back and that they will be be announcing Chillfam parties throughout the northeast real soon.

    Many jamband favorites have played the festival throughout the years including Mike Gordon, George Clinton & Parliamant/Funkadelic, Greensky Bluegrass, Lettuce, moe., Twiddle, Dopapod, Kung Fu, Nth Power, Papadosio, and Pink Talking Fish to name a few.

  • Buffalo’s Humble Braggers to Tour in Support of Debut Album

    Synth-pop trio Humble Braggers are heading out on a run of shows across the state. The tour coincides with the release of their debut full-length album, I Know Better, I’m No Better. It all starts with a hometown show at Nietzsche’s in Buffalo on March 10. From there, they travel across the state and circle back to Fredonia on March 22.  Tickets are on sale now.
