  • Update: Eastbound Throwdown Returns with Driftwood

    The second annual Eastbound Throwdown returns to Irwin Farm in Salem, NY on September 8 and 9, with a number of New York acts, primarily based around Americana styles of music, including Driftwood and Upchuck Ramblers.

    The schedule for this year’s Eastbound Throwdown has been released. The two-day event will have acts on two stages, featuring a main stage set each night from host band, Eastbound Jesus.

    Pre-sale tickets are still available for $60. The price rises to $70 at the gate. Saturday only passes are available for $40. Camping is available on site with the purchase of a weekend pass. Those wishing to bring an RV or camper must purchase a separate RV pass for $25. All tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite.

    Festival organizers Eastbound Jesus headline the event with two sets. Eastbound Throwdown also features Driftwood, the Mallett Brothers Band, Black Mountain Symphony, Wreckloose, Swamp Candy, Green, The Old Main and Cobblestone.

    Tickets for the Eastbound Throwdown are on sale now for $60. Tickets include two days of music and camping.

  • Folkfaces Announce Extensive 2017 Summer Tour

    Buffalo’s Folkfaces are gearing up for 2017 and their biggest summer tour yet. The extensive tour focus primarily on New York, giving those in the state plenty of opportunities to check them out.

    Buffalo-based Americana quintet Folkfaces has had a busy 2017 and the year is only half over. They released their debut album How Long? back in April while also completing two spring tours. The band consists of Tyler Westcott (guitar, vocals), Dan Borodzik (slide guitar, vocals), Ellen Pieroni (saxophones), Patrick Jackson (upright bass) and Dan Schwach (drums, washboard).

    Folkfaces’ summer tour features over 30 dates throughout New York with stops in five other states and Toronto. The tour kicks off this Wednesday, June 21 at Al’s Wine & Whiskey in Syracuse and closes out at the Night Lights Music Festival in Sherman. The tour primarily brings the band throughout New York with a heavy focus on the western portion of the state for their hometown fans.

    In addition to their own shows, they’ll be sharing the stage with a handful of other bands. They play with Dustbowl Revival on June 28 at Babeville in Buffalo. They’ll join The Tenants on July 14 for a house show in Akron, Ohio on July 14. On July 22, they play the Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs with The North and South Dakotas. The Fredtown Stompers and the Buffalo Brass Machine join them on Aug. 2 at the Tralf in Buffalo. As part of the Buffalo Infringement Festival, they play alongside Swimmer, Minor Racket, Dark Matter Trio and The Funk Theory Extravaganza on Aug. 4 at Nietzsche’s in Buffalo. Nietzsche’s sees them again on Aug. 23 along with Minor Moon and Pine Fever.

    Folkfaces is one of NYS Music’s 87/90 up and coming featured artists.

  • Lord Electro Means Business

    Albany’s funktronica act, Lord Electro, will get down to business this summer as they continue their tour in support of their debut studio album, Business. The band will also release its first live album recorded at the legendary Nectar’s in Burlington, Vermont.

    Lord Electro continues its “Business” Tour in support of its debut album of the same name, which was released in March. The tour brings them around the state, starting on June 8 at the Disc Jam Festival in Stephentown, where CEG Presents named them one of the top five acts to see on the main stage.

    They make a few festival appearances over the summer. They hit up the Woodhenge Festival in Adams, where they are scheduled for two sets, on June 23. They play a late-night set on July 8 at Kenny’s Cosmic Campout in Barryville. They finish up their festival appearances on July 29 at the GEM Festival in Glens Falls. In addition to the festival appearances, they’re playing a number of shows in the Northeast, including the Monopole in Plattsburgh on June 24, Lukins in Utica on June 29 and Silvana in New York City on Aug. 5.

    Lord Electro will also release their first live album at the end of the week on June 2. Live at Nectar’s was recorded on May 10 at Burlington, Vermont’s legendary Nectar’s Lounge. The live album showcases the band’s improvisation. It will be available digitally on iTunes, Bandcamp, Spotify and Soundcloud.

  • Lockn’ Announces Special Guests and New Layout

    Lockn’ Festival recently announced several special guests making appearances and collaborations, including Bob Weir joining the Avett Brothers and Ann Wilson of Heart joining Gov’t Mule. The 2017 festival will also feature an improved layout, allowing for better sight lines and easier access to food and other amenities from the campsites.

    Attendees at this year’s Lockn’ Festival, now in its fifth year, will notice a change to the layout. The central venue now encompasses both the main stage and the Blue Ridge Bowl, allowing for improved sight lines and easier access to non-stop music throughout the weekend. The new layout allows for easier access to the food, drink, and merchandise vendors, as well as more efficient entrance and exit from the campgrounds.

    In addition to the layout changes, this year’s Lockn’ features an expanded Garcia’s Forest, which will include a full size replica of Terrapin Station. The iconic porch will feature nightly musical performances from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Midnight North and the Nicole Atkins Band. There will be additional morning performances, dubbed “Piano on the Porch,” by Melvin Seals, Holly Bowling, Danny Louis and others.

    The festival lineup includes several high profile collaborations and special guests. The headlining set is a performance by Phil Lesh and Bob Weir with the Terrapin Family Band joined by Nicki Bluhm. They will play the 1977 Grateful Dead album Terrapin Station in its entirety. Weir also joins the Avett Brothers, who make their Lockn’ debut this year. Ann Wilson of Heart teams up with Gov’t Mule. Moonalice will feature special guest Jorma Kaukonen.

    Lockn’ takes place Aug. 24 to 27 in Arrington, Virginia. Tickets for the festival are on sale now.

  • Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals to Host Non-Profits

    The legendary Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals will host a formal non-profits village for the first time since their foundings in the 1950s. Non-profit organizations from Rhode Island and the surrounding states will be part of the “Participation Row” social action village at both festivals.

    The Newport Folk Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival will make it easier for attendees to make a positive impact on the community through Participation Row. Organized by Headcount, Participation Row will feature several non-profit organizations focused on environmental protection, health and civic participation. Each organization will feature a specific action attendees can take to better the world around them and help the festivals make a positive impact on the community. Headcount is currently accepting applications for Participation Row.

    In addition to Participation Row, Headcount, who has had a presence at Newport Folk Festival for nearly a decade, will host a silent auction to benefit the participating organizations.

    The Newport Folk Festival takes place July 28 to 30 at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island. Performers include the Fleet Foxes, Wilco, John Prine, Regina Spektor, American Acoustic (Punch Brothers, I’m With Her and Julian Lage), the Drive-By Truckers and Alone & Together (Kevin Morby, Sam Cohen, Eric D. Johnson of the Fruit Bats, Joe Russo and Josh Kaufman). Tickets for the festival are sold out, but the organizers setup an official fan ticket exchange.

    The Newport Jazz Festival takes place Aug. 4 to 6 also at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island. The festival features headliners Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Snarky Puppy and The Roots. Other performers include Maceo Parker, the Branford Marsalis Quartet, Rhiannon Giddens, Hudson (Jack DeJohnette, Larry Grenadier, John Medeski and John Scofield), Philadelphia Experiment (Questlove, Christian McBride and Uri Caine), John Medeski on solo piano and D.J. Logic’s Project Logic. Tickets are available now for $170 for a three-day pass or $145 for a two-day Saturday and Sunday pass. Single-day tickets are also available for $65 for Friday and $79 for Saturday or Sunday. The Newport Jazz Festival offers a special student ticket for $20 each day for students ages 16 and older with a valid student ID.

  • Phish Celebrates 20 Years of WaterWheel

    This year marks the 20 year anniversary of the WaterWheel Foundation, the organization that oversees Phish’s charitable activities. To celebrate this milestone, two special pre-show celebrations are planned prior to two of the band’s Baker’s Dozen shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

    Two pre-show celebrations benefitting the WaterWheel Foundation will take place prior to the July 22 and Aug. 5 Phish shows during their Baker’s Dozen run of 13 shows at Madison Square Garden. The celebrations will benefit five different non-profit organizations. The proceeds from the July 22 event will go to four organizations, to be individually selected by each of the band’s four members. Proceeds from the Aug. 5 event will benefit the Mockingbird Foundation, supporting music education.

    Tickets to the event include access to a two-hour celebration with complimentary cocktails and a light dinner. Attendees will receive a WaterWheel event poster designed by Jim Pollock, a specialty chocolate bar created and donated by Asher’s Chocolates, access to a raffle and/or auction for Phish memorabilia from the Phish Archives, early access to the concert venue and access to a private lounge at set-break.

    Tickets for the celebrations are available now for $200. The 21 and over event is open only to ticket-holders for the concert on the evening of the pre-show celebration.

  • Phish Drops Union College Archival Release

    Phish added a new official archival release to their LivePhish collection this morning, with a show from May 17, 1992 at Union College in Schenectady is now available from LivePhish.com.

    On Sunday, May 17, 1992, Phish played a “secret” show, unannounced in the April/May Phish Update of that year. The show took place at Achilles Rink at Union College in Schenectady on keyboardist Page McConnell’s 29th birthday. The show, which had a ticket price of $5, was the second to last show on the 53 night spring tour that wrapped up in the band’s hometown of Burlington, Vermont.

    The night started off with a “no smoking” announcement prior to a first set highlights of “The Landlady” and “Llama” as the openers. “Stash” and “Chalkdust Torture” are also highlights from the set, and the “I Didn’t Know” features drummer Jon Fishman on trombone. The second set “Possum” is considered a recommended version of the song. It features a number of the band’s secret language cues, including the Simpsons and All Fall Down signals. It also contains a variety of teases, including “Rocky Mountain Way,” “L.A. Woman,” “China Grove,” “It’s Ice” and “Divided Sky.” The “Squirming Coil” features the audience singing “Happy Birthday to You” to Page, followed by teases of the song by Page. The versions of “Brother” and “Harry Hood” are considered must hear versions.

  • Brian Wilson Brings ‘Pet Sounds’ Tour to New York

    Brian Wilson has extended his Pet Sounds: The Final Performances tour. The new dates include stops in Rochester, New York City and Syracuse.Brian Wilson has been on an extensive tour performing the Beach Boys album Pet Sounds in its entirety. The tour, billed as “Pet Sounds: The Final Performances,” was recently extended to add a number of dates in Europe and North America. The tour makes three stops in New York. Rochester’s Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theatre gets a visit on Sept. 19. They make a stop on Sept. 23 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The final New York date is Oct. 1 in Syracuse at the Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theatre.

    The tour extension also includes several stop in the nearby Northeast. Wilson plays Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut on Sept. 21. They stop by Boston’s Orpheum Theatre on Sept. 22. Following their stop in New York City, they head to Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Sept. 25 to play the American Music Theatre. The next day, Sept. 26, they hit up the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey. They head back to Massachusetts on Sept. 29 to play New Bedford’s Zeiterion Theatre before returning to New Jersey on Sept. 30 for a show at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City.

    Rochester’s Party in the Park announced the 2017 lineup for the summer concert series. The lineup includes many big names in music, including Los Lobos, Living Colour, Tim Reynolds and Blues Traveler. The series also features a number of local acts on the Genesee Brewery Bowl Stage, including Personal Blend and Ocular Panther.

    Rochester’s Party in the Park summer concert series returns to celebrate 20 years. Zach Deputy, Los Lonely Boys and Pink Floyd tribute act the Machine are included in the 2017 lineup. A press conference is scheduled for Thursday to announce the full lineup.

    Party in the Park takes place weekly on Thursdays from June 15 through Aug. 10 at Rochester’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

    Tickets for the Party in the Park concerts are $5 each. Fans who plan to attend all nine shows can purchase a a Party Pack for $35 and will be able to enter via an express entry line.

  • Baked Potatoes Released Video for ‘Unity’

    Baked Potatoes released a music video for their song “Unity” off their debut album Loaded.baked potatoes loadedBaked Potatoes, a ska/punk band from Oneonta, recorded a video, the band’s first, for their song “Unity.” The video was released on April 20, the one year anniversary of their debut album Loaded.

    During the harsh upstate NY winter the Potatoes got together in The Warehouse, a DIY punk venue that was converted from the loading dock of an abandoned bakery.  A venue known for almost exclusively punk-rock and hardcore shows, The Warehouse turned out to be the perfect setting for “Unity.” The ska-punk horn filled anthem sings about positive mental attitude, questioning authority, and being stronger united than divided.
