  • moe.’s Rob Derhak Cancer Free

    Rob Derhak, bassist and vocalist from moe., announced on Facebook through both his personal page and the band’s page that he is officially cancer free. He was originally diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer in July.

    It has been about two weeks since moe. announced their return with two shows at Port Chester’s Capitol Theatre on Feb. 2 and 3. On Wednesday, Derhak announced that, following a visit with his doctor, he was given a clean bill of health and declared cancer free. The cancer diagnosis in July had the band on an indefinite hiatus that began back in August.

    Derhak’s statement:

    Hi Friends,
    I have some good news to post today. After being scanned, poked, and prodded my Dr.’s have given me a green light. Did I kick cancers ass? No, it beat me up pretty good. But I just didn’t have the sense to go down, and eventually the cancer grew tired and hit the mat. So essentially, I rope-a-doped the dam thing. Although I’ll need to continue the Dr.’s visits for the next 5 years, they’ve given me a clean bill of health and declared me cancer free, with only a minimal chance that it will return. So thank you to everyone that was pulling for me, the support I received was instrumental in helping me get through this. I am truly looking forward to seeing everyone when I hit the stage again this February, with moe.

    In addition to the shows at the Capitol Theatre, moe. will return to host their Summer Camp Music Festival along with Umphrey’s McGee over Memorial Day weekend and they will be playing a show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on July 12.

  • Whose Hat Is This? First Ever East Coast Tour

    Tedeschi Trucks Band side project Whose Hat Is This? is set to make its first tour down the east coast. The six night tour brings them from New York City down to the Atlanta metropolitan area.

    Whose Hat Is This? is made up of Tedeschi Trucks Band members Tim Lefebvre on bass, Kebbi Williams on saxophone and JJ Johnson and Tyler “Falcon” Greenwell on drums. Their shows combine elements of jazz, funk and electronica into completely improvised sets. Their self-titled debut album was released in April.

    The tour kicks off on Dec. 4 at New York City’s Rockwood Music Hall and continues for six consecutive nights down the coast until they close it out on Dec. 9 at Gate City Brewery in Roswell, Georgia. This tour sees the band coming off two sold out shows at New York City’s 55 Bar in October. The only other Northeast show is Dec. 5 at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia.

    The tour was booked with assistance from Craft for Causes who partner the craft brewing community with live music ventures for charitable experiences.

  • Nietzsche’s FolkFest 2017 Lineup includes Folkfaces, Jonathan Richman

    Nietzsche’s dropped the lineup for the 2017 edition of their FolkFest, which takes place next week at the famed Buffalo club. The second annual FolkFest features headliner Jonathan Richman and NYS Music 87/90 act Folkfaces.

    After a successful inaugural year, Nietzsche’s brings back their FolkFest for 2017. The fest kicks off on Wednesday, Nov. 8 and runs through Saturday, Nov. 11. Jonathan Richman, known for his work with the Modern Lovers, headlines the festival on Nov. 11 at 8 p.m.

    Tyler Westcott and Dr. Jazz kick off the festivities on Wednesday at 6 p.m. with some old time swing and gypsy jazz. The headliner on Wednesday is the Oddjob Ensemble from Santa Rosa, California at 10 p.m. Following them is 18 Wheels and a Crowbar.

    Thursday night features the Heenan Brothers followed by local act the Observers. The Dishonest Fiddlers, of Northeast Pennsylvania headline the night at 10:30 p.m. Rockabilly Steve and RB3 close out the night at midnight.

    The fest starts to heat up on Friday with Seth Faergolzia’s Multibird from Rochester headlining the night at 11:30 p.m. The music kicks off with Cooper and Gin at 10 p.m. followed by Utica’s the Old Main at 10:30 pm. Ryan Sutherland and Dave Brown cap off the night at 1 a.m.

    Follow the festival headliner show with Jonathan Richman, there is a second late night show with second tier headliners the Crooked North at 10 p.m. The late show also features NYS Music 87/90 act Folkfaces at 11:30 p.m. followed by Pine Fever at 12:30 a.m. The festival concludes at 1:30 a.m. with Chris James and Mama G.

    Admission for Wednesday and Thursday nights is $5. Friday and Saturday’s late night run $10 with Saturday’s headliner set costing $15 to get in. All shows are 21 and over, though minors will be admitted when accompanied by an adult.

  • Grateful Dead Musical Opens This Month

    An off-Broadway Grateful Dead musical based around the lyrics of Robert Hunter and the music of Jerry Garcia opens later this month.

    “Red Roses, Green Gold” opens at New York City’s Minetta Lane Theater in Greenwich Village on Oct. 29. The musical features music and lyrics by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia with additional music provided by founding members of the Grateful Dead Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bob Weir. Keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, who played with the “core four” founding members for the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead and currently plays with Weir, Hart and Bill Kreutzmann in Dead & Company, will provide musical supervision and arrangements for the musical.

    “Red Roses, Green Gold” is the third musical written by Michael Norman Mann that takes inspiration from the music of the Grateful Dead. The musical is directed and choreographed by Rachel Klein, director of “The Anthem” and “Around the World in 80 Days.”

    From the website: “This new musical set in 1920s Cumberland tells the fantastical and comical tale of Jackson Jones and his family of swindlers as they gamble their way to love and riches.”

    Tickets for “Red Roses, Green Gold” are on sale now. Previews begin Oct. 11.

  • Trey Anastasio Band Fall Tour with Halloween Show

    Trey Anastasio will bring his solo band on a six-night fall tour in Las Vegas and California in late October where the tour includes a Halloween show at the Wiltern in Los Angeles.

    Trey Anastasio continues to keep his solo band busy. With four shows already scheduled in mid-September in Northern New England and New Brunswick, he recently announced a string of shows out west in October and November. The tour kicks off with two nights at the Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas on Oct. 27 and 28. It continues on Halloween at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, only the fourth time the Trey Anastasio Band has played the holiday, the last time being two years ago. He hits up the Observatory OC in Santa Ana, California the next night on Nov. 1. After a night off to travel north, he finishes up his tour with two nights at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California on Nov. 3 and 4.

    In addition to those dates, he also has a pair of orchestral dates in late September in Nashville and Atlanta.

    Tickets for the fall tour are currently available through a realtime pre-sale, which ends Wednesday, Aug. 23. They go on sale to the general public on Friday, Aug. 25.

  • Bruce Springsteen Makes His Broadway Debut

    Bruce Springsteen will make his Broadway debut in his “Springsteen on Broadway” run of shows in New York City. The marathon run of shows takes place throughout October and November.

    Bruce Springsteen will play a total of 39 shows as part of his “Springsteen on Broadway” run of shows at New York City’s 960 seat Walter Kerr Theatre. The intimate shows will combine stories and music from his career, which began with 1973’s Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ. Springsteen is quoted on the “Springsteen on Broadway” website:

    “I wanted to do some shows that were as personal and as intimate as possible. I chose Broadway for this project because it has the beautiful old theaters which seemed like the right setting for what I have in mind. In fact, with one or two exceptions, the 960 seats of the Walter Kerr Theatre is probably the smallest venue I’ve played in the last 40 years. My show is just me, the guitar, the piano and the words and music. Some of the show is spoken, some of it is sung. It loosely follows the arc of my life and my work. All of it together is in pursuit of my constant goal to provide an entertaining evening and to communicate something of value.” 

    While “The Boss” has kept busy over the course of his career, last year was a big year for him with The River Tour 2016 being named the top global tour according to both Billboard and Pollstar, the release of his memoir Born to Run and its companion album Chapter and Verse in September and being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November.

    Previews for “Springsteen on Broadway” begin on Oct. 3. The official opening is Oct. 12. The shows take place Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. with a final performance on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 3 p.m. to make up for taking Thanksgiving Day off. The show is expected to last approximately two hours.

    Tickets for “Springsteen on Broadway” are being sold through Ticketmaster’s VerifiedFan program and go on sale at 10 a.m. on Aug. 30. Fans wishing to attend the shows must register with Ticketmaster by 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27. Verified fans will be confirmed on Tuesday, Aug. 29 and will receive a special code by text message on Wednesday, Aug. 30 prior to the 10 a.m. on sale time.

  • McLovins 2017 Fall Tour Stops in NYC, Rochester, Hannibal

    The McLovins dropped some initial tour dates for fall 2017, including three stops in New York this month including a stop at New York City’s Mercury Lounge for a Phish Baker’s Dozen after party.

    Hailing from Hartford, Connecticut, the McLovins have been making waves since their start in 2009 playing alongside big names in music like the Gin Blossoms, Buddy Guy and George Porter, Jr. They’re currently working on two EPs as a followup to their 2015 self-titled album McLovins, which should be released this fall.

    The McLovins fall tour starts tomorrow for a Phish Baker’s Dozen after party at the Mercury Lounge in New York City. The tour takes them up and down the eastern seaboard with several dates in Georgia and Alabama, closing out at Milkboy in Philadelphia on Nov. 22. In addition to tomorrow’s show, they play two other shows in New York. They hit up the Photo City Improv in Rochester on Aug. 17 and play the Big “G” Jam in Hannibal on Aug. 19. They also make a stop in nearby Erie, Pennsylvania on Aug. 12 at the Kings Rook Club.

  • Huichica East Festival Features Real Estate, Charles Bradley, Cass McCombs

    The 2017 Huichica East Festival brings headliners Real Estate and Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires to the Hudson Valley next month for a two-day music, food and wine festival.

    Huichica East takes place Aug. 25 and 26 at Chaseholm Farms in Pine Plains. The small “boutique” festival brings Sonoma County wine from Gundlach Bundschu Winery and farm-to-table food, much of it sourced directly from Chaseholm Farms, together with a strong music program. With attendance capped at 700 tickets, the festival will be an intimate experience for all attendees.

    Headlining the music on Friday, Aug. 25 is Real Estate, performing along with Doug Tuttle, Marissa Nadler, Surf Curse, Currituck Co., John Andrews and the Yawns and Ruth Garbus. Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires headline Saturday, Aug. 26. Also performing are the Cass McCombs Band, the Mattson 2, Mail the Horse, Meg Baird, Driftwood Soldier, ARD, MV & EE and the Cut Worms.

    Huichica East tickets are $90 for the two days. Camping passes are available for $30 for up to eight people. The family-friendly event encourages attendees to bring their children with free admission for those under 16.

  • Free Concerts Wednesdays in Sharon Springs for Summer 2017

    Folks looking for something to do in the middle of the week can head to Sharon Springs for their free summer 2017 concert series. The music takes place at the pavilion in Chalybeate Spring Park on Main Street.

    The series continues next Wednesday, July 19 with Steal Your Peach, a tribute to the Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead. The music runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Wednesday through Aug. 16. The “concert” on Aug. 2 is a karaoke contest with a $100 cash prize for the winner.

  • Mike Gordon Announces ‘OGOGO’ and Fall Tour with Stop in Syracuse

    Mike Gordon is putting the final touches on his newest studio album, OGOGO, set to be released in September. He will head out on a fall tour with the current lineup of his solo band. The 17 night tour kicks off on Sept. 22 in Athens, Georgia and includes a stop at Syracuse’s Westcott Theater.

    mike gordon ogogo tourPhish bassist, Mike Gordon, has been keeping busy with the new lineup of his solo band. His fifth studio album, OGOGO, will be released on Sept. 15. The first track, “Steps,” is available for streaming now and can be heard in the video below.

    Gordon will also take his current solo band out on a 17 night tour that kicks off on Friday, Sept. 22 at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia. The tour makes a stop on Friday, Sept. 29 at the Westcott Theater in Syracuse. The only other stop in the Northeast is at New Haven, Connecticut’s College Street Music Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 27. The tour closes out with a two-night stand at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13 and 14. Gordon’s band includes Scott Murawski on guitar, Robert Walter on keyboards, John Kimock on drums, and Craig Myers on percussion.

    Tickets for the tour are available now via a real-time pre-sale, which ends Thursday, July 13 at 5 p.m ET. The general on sale date for the tour is this Friday, July 14 at 10 a.m. ET.
