  • The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band Brings Epic Performance to Stowe

    Looking back to my 18 years of photographing concerts, mostly throughout New York State, I can count on two hands the number of shows that I mention when someone asks, “What was the best show you’ve photographed?”. In the past, I could easily say Midnight Oil, Pearl Jam, Springsteen even. On one particular Saturday night at the Rusty Nail, in Stowe, Vermont, I ventured out nearly three hours to witness what is simply put, a top three show, ever as American County Blues band, The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, out of Brown County, Indiana took the stage and flat out owned it from start to finish.

    The hard working three pieced band rumbled through a set list with catchy tunes like “Mama’s Fried Potatoes” and “Clap Your Hands”. Master picker, Peyton and the ever hypnotic “Breezy” Peyton, on the washboard enticed and entertained the half full venue as part of a Spring Shakedown night which in all honesty was dominated by Peyton after a dropout of another band earlier that month. Nonetheless, the storytelling and raw talent of the band stands easily stands out and from a photographer’s standpoint is pure heaven and a band that any music lover would be wise to catch live.

  • Phish Releases New LivePhish Show From Fall 1999

    Whimsical jam band heavyweights Phish have hand-picked and released a new live show “From the Archives,” dating back to their fall tour of 1999.

    This Sept. 14 performance at Boise State University is now (officially) one for the books with its massive energy and notable 27-minute rendition of “AC/DC Bag.” Dubbed as the “Boise Bag,” the song features Trey Anastasio on keys and John Fishman on vacuum for the better half of the jam that steered its way into a groovy “Gumbo,” containing teases of “Another One Bites the Dust.”

    Additional highlights from the evening include a “Loving Cup > What’s the Use?” and bluegrass pickings “Nellie Kane” and “Rocky Top” to cap off the first set. For the audience, it’s always a pleasure to see the quartet gather at center stage to intimately sing songs a cappella, like “Hello My Baby” in this instance.

    Phish kicked off their fall 1999 tour in Vancouver, followed by a two-night stand at The Gorge and a Sunday show in Portland. The tour then turned toward the Sawtooths for a Tuesday night show at Boise State University before continuing in California and beyond. The BSU Pavilion was opened in 1982 as the Boise State Broncos’ basketball arena with a concert capacity of about 13,000. Tickets for Phish cost $26.50 with a GA floor and reserved seating in the stands. This was the band’s second show at this venue (they had opened summer 1995 there) and their last show to-date in Idaho. Given the days off on both sides, the seven hour drive from Portland and the ten-plus hour drive to Shoreline for the next shows, many opted to skip this gig but those who took the trip were justly rewarded and those who didn’t will never forget it.”

    Boise’s Set I kicked off with Chalk Dust Torture and featured The Curtain > Waste, a dramatic sequence of Loving Cup > What’s The Use? and Wading In The Velvet Sea > Farmhouse, and a hot Taste. The mostly non-stop set II began with the first Peaches en Regalia in more than two years, followed by an AC/DC Bag for the ages. This Bag was a tour de force of multi-modal improvisation culminating in a psychedelic freakout so far Out that swirling vacuum ambiance was the only way to wrap it. The Boise Bag spilled over into a standout Gumbo with a slow funk Another One Bites The Dust jam that cemented Boise’s snooze-you-lose status. A frenetic Down With Disease > Frankenstein (with a nod to Pink Floyd) capped the set. The encore was Simple with a live fade-out that gave the band time to move downstage for an A cappella Hello My Baby to close out a magical night at BSU.”

  • Update: Catskill Chill Third Wave Announced

    Catskill Chill Festival has announced the third wave lineup. Joining the festival are Lettuce; some members of the band including Eric Bloom, Adam Deitch, Ryan Zoidis, Nigel Hall, Adam Smirnoff and Erick Coomes will also perform with Borahm Lee in “Bitches Bloom: A Tribute to Miles Davis.”

    Catskill Chill will feature a special performance by Reed Mathis & Electric Beethoven, which includes heavy hitting musicians Reed Mathis (Billy & the Kids, Tea Leaf Green), Jay Lane (Primus, Ratdog), Todd Stoops (RAQ), Cochrane McMillan (Tea Leaf Green) and Clay Welch. A 10-piece soul/funk band Funky Dawgz Brass Band completes this line-up.

    Catskill Chill Music Festival released the second phase of 2016’s lineup, featuring a packed bill of diverse artists like George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, Electron, Turkuaz, Cabinet, Formula 5 and Space Jesus. The seventh annual September event is throwing in a few new surprises, too, including a Thursday night pre-party.

    To kick off the first time at New Minglewood, Chill is hosting an onsite pre-party the night before the festival begins that will feature two sets of Twidde, along with music from Jimkata, Aqueous and Trakstar. And teaming up for collaborative tributes are Dopapod and Turkuaz as Dopakuaz Does Yacht Rock, and Pink Talking Phish and Kung Fu will cover the music of Prince and David Bowie, while Particle and the Werks will play as PartiWerks, plus a Chillfam Allstars Thriller Tribute.

    This afternoon, the Catskill Chill Music Festival released the initial lineup for its seventh-annual event happening Sept. 23 through 25. Artists scheduled to headline are Mike Gordon, Greensky Bluegrass and Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass.

    Other acts sharing this year’s festival bill include Break Science, Dopapod, Goldfish, Perpetual Groove, the Werks, Kung Fu, Deep Banana Blackout, Particle, Zach Deputy, Ryan Montbleau, Pink Talking Fish, Tauk, Hayley Jane and the Primates, Mister F and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. Tributes for Chill 2016 are an ’80s-themed show by the Heavy Pets, Elise Testone’s Zeppelin Tribute and Lespecial Primus Tribute.

    Past lineups have featured notable groups including Particle, moe., Yonder Mountain String Band, Lotus, the New Deal, Keller Williams, Lettuce, Umphrey’s McGee and Galactic.

    In February, festival organizers announced a venue change from the summer camp in Hancock to New Minglewood in Lakewood, Pennsylvania, but noted that the Chillfam can expect similar amenities including rental cabins, lakefront setting, free parking and camping, plus indoor movie theaters, yoga, art and wellness workshops and an outdoor main stage.

    The campground opens at 9 a.m. on Friday and will close at 1 p.m. on Monday. And as Neil Benjamin Jr. noted in his coverage of the Catskill Chills of summer’s past, “It’s an experience that cannot be recreated anywhere else.”

  • In Focus: The New Mastersounds and Moon Hooch, Higher Ground

    The New Mastersounds and Moon Hooch layed out their deep and funky grooves for the crowded Burlington scene, at Higher Ground Ballroom on April 22nd. TNMS consists of Simon Allen on drums, Eddie Roberts on guitar, Pete Shand on bass and Joe Tatton on keys.

    new mastersounds moon hoochMoon Hooch opened up the night, riling up the crowd with their wild stirring of energy-their presence far exceeding any opener I’ve ever seen. Wenzl McGowen played what seemed to be a non-stop flow of contrabass clarinet, as well as baritone saxophone-along with Mike Wilbur on tenor saxophone and clarinet-dueling at points, as they are known to do. James Muschler on drums, maintained a strong presence throughout the entire show, steadily anchoring the rhythm. At one point he made his way to the corner of the drum-kit stage, to sit and play a very special and beautiful set of bongos. Just when no one was expecting it, Wilbur began belting out lyrics that were enough to shake the ground-the sentiments were shedding light on the truth of current political and environmental issues.

    They took over the stage, by the end leaving the crowd wondering if they were the main act. These guys have been building momentum for some time now, and seem to be focusing their energy towards a conscious revolution through their music. Not only do they put on a show that will leave you wanting for more, but they also share their philosophical beliefs, as well as sustainable cooking advice (“Cooking in the Cave”, see their website). If you haven’t experienced Moon Hooch yet, they are one that you absolutely do not want to miss if you get the chance-it’s sure to be a unique and mind-opening experience.     Once Moon Hooch finished the transition of the atmosphere from their incredible performance, to the anticipation of The New Mastersounds taking the stage, was quite clear. The energy was so strong, I could feel it pulsating in the air.

    Starting off on a high note, these four kept the crowds energy rising with their sound, forming a wave of dancing fans from the beginning of the show until the close of the evening. They played with ease, collectively moving in and out from one soulful tune to the next. The vibe they created was effortlessly smooth, funky and rhythmic. Halfway through, Shand dropped a bass-line with a reggae feel to it, with Roberts following it to transform it into a funky flow, transitioning back and forth. It was at this point that Allen really started wailing on his drums, in turn pushing Tatton to speed it up-to then slow it back down to the rock-steady feel. Through this weaving of complex movement, it was obvious to see that these guys have a chemistry that reverberates through their entire composition as a group.

    You’ll find them playing shows all over the U.S. this year-from the south, to the west coast, and as far as Japan. They’ll be making a few stops in N.Y. towards the close of May and the early part of June, and popping up at well known festivals this coming summer such as Summer Camp Music Festival: Chillicothe, IL, Mountain Jam 2016: Hunter Mountain, NY, and Electric Forest: Rothbury, MI, just to name a few.

    The pairing of The New Mastersounds and Moon Hooch was genius-two incredible groups, bringing distinctly different, yet equally enticing and skillful performances to the table.

  • Tony Markellis Spring Schedule

    Bassist Tony Markellis keeps himself quite busy this spring when he is not touring with the Trey Anastasio Band. He is scheduled to play a number of shows throughout New York and nearby this spring.

He’ll join them at many shows throughout New York, starting this week. He also plays with a variety of other musicians in the area and can be seen throughout New York, primarily in the Capital Region.

    He joins Grateful Dead tribute band Dead Set on May 20 at the Westcott in Syracuse. He will also be at Summer Camp Music Festival with Floodwood. His full set of dates can be seen below.

  • Spiritual Rez Northeast Run Blankets New York State

    High energy ska and funk is headed towards New York this week with Spiritual Rez’s 2016 Northeast Tour. With live performances that elicit an incredibly powerful blend of reggae, rock, ska and jam, the group has been on a cross country tour amid the release of their upcoming album due out this summer

    The Northeast Tour brings the group to Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Erie, Brooklyn, New Haven, Boston, Portland, Burlington and Saratoga Springs over a two week period, providing ample opportunities for you to dance the night away and walk into work exhausted but smiling the next morning.

    The as of yet untitled album, slated for an early summer release, was recorded in Los Angeles at Jim Kaufman Productions under the direction of Kenny Carkeet (Awolnation) and Max Collins (Eve 6). One of the many collaborators that took part in the album is trombonist Billy Kottage of Reel Big Fish, who is featured on the track “Bad Girl.” More jaw dropping collaborations will be revealed around the album’s release.

  • Aqueous Pushes New Live Release ‘From the ArQives’

    If there’s anything the fervent fans of Buffalo’s Aqueous have had to complain about the past few years it’s the lack of released live material. This all changed recently with a slew of high quality recordings including last years fantastic “Wizard of Oz” themed, Dark Side of the Moon infused Halloween show, the recent Boulder, Colorado release, and a bunch of new recordings on archive.org.

    On the heels of this flurry of activity the band has put forth the latest multi-track live set – From the ArQives: 2015-04-11 King’s Rook Club, Erie PA. This two set monster of a show features some of the bands most intense jamming and “type II” level improvisation within a slew of their top notch original material and some debut covers.

    Set one kicks off with “Complex Pt. I” and focuses on a mix of material including bust-outs of old school Aqueous tracks “Marty” and “They’re Calling for You” which made their first set-list appearances in close to a year. Also included is a super jammed out cover of Steely Dan’s “Josie.” Aqueous has covered many Dan songs throughout the years (Including a November 2015 cover of “Peg” featuring a Joel Cummins sit-in). Guitarist Mike Gantzer spoke about the Dan’s influence:

    “I always dig pulling out the occasional Steely Dan tune; they’ve personally been a huge influence on my writing and playing style. and often times their tunes are great catalysts for improvisation.”

    Set two continues the jam fest with notable versions of orginal tunes “Underlyer,” “Eon Don,” an “Aldehyde” sandwich with the meat being a cover of The Police’s “Canary in a Coalmine,” and a rare full version of the epic fifteen minute Cycles track “Staring into the Sun.” The audio was recorded and mastered by the bands sound and light engineer Ben Wayt and is available on SoundCloud and archive.org.

  • The Disco Biscuits Sell Out Debut Run at the Capitol Theatre

    The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester is a venue that has earned itself a unique spot in the heart of American jam band culture. Being a regular stop for legends such as the Grateful Dead and Frank Zappa in the past, today the Cap continues its tradition of booking the cream of the progressive rock crop. The Disco Biscuits fit that role exquisitely, and it showed this weekend during their back to back maximum capacity shows on March 25th and 26th. With the New Deal opening on both nights, the bill would provide a trance-fusion treat that no fan of the band or the venue could deny.

    There was an anticipatory energy crackling through the Capitol as the New Deal started the evening smoothly. The unique blend of catchy and accessible electronic rock served as an excellent warm up as the crowd settled in; swelling to a size that would worry the fire marshal as the opening act concluded. Giving a salute to one of the many gods to grace the same stage, the Disco Biscuits kicked it off in style with Frank Zappa’s “Pygmy Twylyte.” Zappa can lubricate anyone’s mood, and the song clearly got it going perfectly as the crowd brimmed with positive energy. “Spraypaint” always being a pleaser, the set promised to be an uplifting one as bassist Marc Brownstein had everyone feeling mellow for the transition into “Rainbow Song”. Maintaining the upbeat theme immaculately, “Spectacle” was followed promptly by a thundering “Helicopters” introduction that had everyone singing along. The set concluded with keyboardist Aron Magner’s crushing organ outro for the set-closing end of “Spraypaint”.

    Guitarist Jon Gutwillig greeted us warmly to start the second set, with his fingers even hotter for the incendiary riffs of “Mindless Dribble”. A few people mentioned that the “Crystal Ball” that followed seemed to have a less lively jump than usual, and the set seemed to have changed course from the first. The Biscuits opted for their more contemporary sound when continuing with “Highwire”. Never before heard cover “She’s a Bad Mama Jama”, originally by funk forerunner Carl Carlton, continued to bring the show to a less engaging air. Intertwining back into “Dribble”, drummer Allen Acoin provided a thundering drum solo before the band broke into a haunting “Orch Theme”. The conclusion of “Highwire” would conclude the second set, with encore frequent “Frog Legs” leaving everyone with high hopes for the following evening.

    This wouldn’t just be one more Saturday night in Port Chester, however. Sold out yet again but feeling cooler and more breathable on the floor, the boys started the first set with a “Shem-Rah Boo” fake out which dubiously changed key into “Bernstein and Chasnoff”. The Disco Biscuits were clearly locked and loaded for the evening yet again, breaking out “Bombs” like they had something to prove. The inverted “Shelby Rose” filled us all with delight, and served as a perfect segue vessel into the true gem of the entire weekend, “And the Ladies Were the Rest of the Night”. Bringing it back to “Bernstein” before dismissing us to set break, where glowing faces abound chatted about the wholly satisfying experience we had all shared moments ago.

    They set the bar almost impossibly high with the first set that night of the 26th, and it seemed they would continue to exceed expectations with the beginning of “Hope” swooning us comfortably into the final set of the run. An inverted “Above the Waves” washed over the crowd as the band nailed the immensely technical composition. “Mr. Don” followed suit, leaving the impression that the closing set would be chalk full of Biscuits classics. This was not so, unfortunately, as they surprised us by playing LCD Soundsystem cover “Home.” The choice seemed lazy and out of place that late in the run; the consensus seemed to be that we all would’ve much rather heard a song written by the band themselves this close to the conclusion of their maiden voyage at the Capitol. Ending the fourth and final set of the run, the boys brought the “Helicopters” that was started during the first set of the previous evening in for a landing. The Disco Biscuits waved triumphantly as they returned for the encore “Caves of the East” adding a hip hop twist with a sample from A Tribe Called Quest’s “Check the Rhime” in salute to the late MC of the group, Phife Dawg, who passed earlier this week. Ending lightly with the last measures of “Mr. Don”, Brownstein ended the weekend by hinting that we should expect to see them again soon on the very same stage.

    All things considered, the Biscuits’ inaugural weekend at the legendary Capitol Theatre left the crowd flying high. Returning to our homes and hotels, with sleep came dreams of what may be just around the corner for the new alliance between the band and the theatre.

  • Bernie Sanders to Appear on Forthcoming Phish Studio Album

    With news this week that Phish has wrapped up recording of their latest studio album in Nashville, a source close to NYS Music has revealed a new piece of information regarding the album. A little birdie has provided unconfirmed, unsubstantiated rumors that can be declared plausible given the unfolding of information thus far.

    Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was seen leaving a Nashville rehearsal studio with drummer Jon Fishman twice in the few days of down time the candidate had between his East Troy, WI rally and Brooklyn, NY rally.

    The source close to NYS Music offers that the visits Sanders made to the rehearsal studio with Fishman were collaborative beyond politics. This suggests that the friendship cultivated between Sanders, Fishman, and the Phish community has led the Senator to contribute to the album on a creative level. It could be possible that Sanders offered backing vocals on a new song, much like his early work on Phish’s first album, Junta, where he provided harmony on the “washuffizidrivemetofirenze” portion of “You Enjoy Myself.”

    Sanders, when reached for comment, would not comment on the album, but suggested his campaign would “Keep it rollin” all the way through to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia in July.

    Earlier this year, Fishman had performed at a rally in Durham, NH and has previously spoken out o-phish-ally in support of the Vermont Senator. On the other hand, Sanders provided the claim that Phish has “made New England proud. They are one of the great bands, have been one of the great bands in this country.”

    Showing off his vocal chops, Sanders has previously recorded “This Land is Your Land” for an album released in 1987 and recently stood beside Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig to share in the verses of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.”

    Sanders would not be the first Democratic Presidential field to have had a notable hand in music. Among him are former 2016 candidate Martin O’Malley (guitar – the band O’Malley’s March), Woodrow Wilson (violin), Harry S. Truman (piano), Andrew Jackson (banjo), Barack Obama (lyrics), and Bill Clinton (tenor sax).
