  • Aoife O’Donovan Coming to Geneva Friday Night

As a part of the Smith Opera House’s Club Series, Dan Smalls Presents brings Aoife O’Donovan to Ravines Wine Cellars this Friday night. O’Donovan is touring behind her sophomore solo effort “In the Magic Hour” released early this year, of which the New York Times wrote: “Sweetness and sadness find a tenuous balance in [her] voice — and in the songs on her second album…evokes the reverberant chamber pop observations of Grizzly Bear…[and] the lush austerity of Alison Krauss.” This week she also released a live album, “Man in a Neon Coat: Live from Cambridge,” which was recorded on one night this April at The Sinclair.

Singer/songwriter Aoife O’Donovan is best known for her work in the Boston progressive folk band Crooked Still. She has also been featured with Yo Yo Ma’s The Goat Rodeo Sessions and has made multiple appearances on Prairie Home Companion. At the top of picturesque Seneca Lake, at a beautifully sloping vineyard, amongst award-winning wines, there might not be a better setting to hear O’Donovan‘s sweet as honey vocals and airy harmonies.

Pittsburgh’s Brooke Annibale will open the evening showcasing her own evocative and timeless song craft. The music will get going around 8pm. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Smith Opera House’s web site. Ravines Wine Cellars is located at 400 Barracks Road in Geneva.

  • Umphrey’s McGee to Release Mashup Album ‘Zonkey’

Jamrock veterans Umphrey’s McGee are set to release a new album, Zonkey, on November 11, thus bringing the band’s eight-year Halloween tradition of live mashups to the studio. The mashups cover tunes that span 40 years of music history and a plethora of genres, featuring spot-on renditions and fresh arrangements of classics by the Beastie Boys, Beck, Chicago, Eurythmics, Metallica, Michael Jackson, Talking Heads, Rage Against the Machine, The Weeknd, Ween, and many more.

    zonkey

Check out the spooky, elusive, crucial first track “National Loser Anthem” here.

Following in a longstanding tradition of fan-centric offerings, which includes UM Bowl, the Hall of Fame series, the Headphones & Snowcones experience, and Reel to Real, Zonkey promises to be yet another achievement in the Chicago-based sextet’s quest to bring relentless rock and peerless innovation to the jam scene. In what’s become an increasingly digital live music scene, the mashup concept not only draws on the fluid juxtapositions of the remix revolution, but also re-imagines the traditional blues medley, in that there are no samples used on the album. In the words of keyboardist Joel Cummins, “Zonkey clearly pays homage to some of our favorite artists & songs. While we’ve tried to reproduce the spirit of the original compositions & recordings, we’ve also tried to have some fun with the takes as we’ve often combined seemingly dissimilar musical elements to create a new vibe altogether.”

Fans who pre-order Zonkey on CD or digital download are eligible for a limited time to receive one of 200 signed CDs. CD pre-orders will also come with an mp3 of each track. Plus, Umphrey’s McGee has selected artists to create a limited edition pin for each song.

  • Teddy Midnight Releases Debut LP, Music Video for Lead Single

Teddy Midnight, an electro-dance-funk jamband hailing from Brooklyn, released a debut LP Wednesday titled Velvet Blue, now available on Soundcloud. The group also premiered a music video Tuesday for their lead single “Turkish Silva” on Youtube.

    TeddyMidnight5

The quartet includes Wiley Griffin (guitar), Sean McAuley (vocals/keys/percussion), Adam Magnan (drums/sampler), and Sean Silva (bass/synth).

Velvet Blue features eight tracks that encompass Teddy Midnight’s artful blend of electronic beats, mixed with jamband improvisation. Their sound has been compared to the likes of New Deal, STS9, Lotus and Dopapod.

The music video for “Turkish Silva” is a depiction of “the tribulations of sex, romance, and partying on the notoriously super-dramatic BK dating/Tinder scene,” according to a press release. “I wanted to capture a couple of concepts that I observed about the nature of life and love in our youth. One of them was the vulnerability we all experience in our relationships,” Wiley Griffin was quoted about the inspiration for the video. The video was produced by Sobokeh Exports and directed by Wiley Griffin and Kristina Rusch.

There will be a record release party on Oct. 1 to celebrate Velvet Blue, at BRYAC in Bridgeport, CT.

Teddy Midnight has shared stages with Kung Fu, Twiddle, Formula 5 and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and has played sold out shows at such NYC venues as Irving Plaza, Brooklyn Bowl, Grammercy Theatre, and Bowery Ballroom. On the horizon for the band are festivals such as Great North this weekend, and Luna Light Music Festival in October.

  • Kinky Boots – Don’t Miss this Must-See Musical

Central New York theater-goers are in for a spectacular treat. Kinky Boots is a wonderful Broadway experience with performances at the Stanley Theater in Utica on September 6-8, 2016. This upbeat and popular musical won the coveted Tony Award in 2013 for Best Musical.

kinky bootsKicking off this three day extravaganza, patrons who take in the first night of the event will help to raise money for the Q Center, a safe haven for the LGBTQ community, providing case management, after school hours, education awards, leadership and advocacy training.

Kinky Boots is an uplifting story inspired by true events written in a book by Tony winner Harvey Fierstein. It is a story that conveys a valuable message about friendship and acceptance. The main character is Charlie Price. His family run shoe factory is going bust and he comes up with an idea to make and sell thigh high red boots. Together with a drag queen named Lola, they conceive a plan to make these ladies’ shoes marketed for men that are referred to as “kinky boots.” In the process, these two men from very different backgrounds forge a strong friendship.

Tony and Grammy award winning pop star, Cyndi Lauper, wrote the show’s music, winning her best original score at the 2013 Tony Awards.  Lauper is most famous for the ’80’s hit “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and brings that same energetic style of music to this production. Many shows have the audience dancing in the aisles.

  • Chris Brown Taken Into Custody After Home Gun Incident, Posts Bail

Chris Brown just can’t help himself, as he finds himself in trouble again. NBC News reports that the Hip Hop and R&B singer was taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department after law enforcement showed up to Browns house with a warrant. An unidentified woman claimed that Brown had threatened her with a gun.

    Chris Brown

The early morning incident happened when the unidentified woman claimed that Brown had pointed a gun at her before she left his gated estate in Tarzana. Police received a phone call around 3:00 a.m., sending several patrol cars to Brown’s home early Tuesday.

Lt. Chris Ramirez told reporters that, “Mr. Brown is going to be transported where he will be arrested for ADW (Assault with a Deadly Weapon).” Police stated “Brown will be formally booked sometime Tuesday night, or early Wednesday morning.”

As of this afternoon, Lt. Ramirez stated that people were removed from the residence, and interviews would take place following a “protective sweep” of Brown’s home. Ramirez also told reporters that the investigation is still ongoing, and the search still being conducted and evidence collected. He would not comment on whether a gun or any other weapons were found on the premises due to the investigation still being on-going.

Sources also reported to NBC that witnesses say Brown, who has recently pleaded guilty to a felony assault for another crime, refused to come out of his home when officers arrived. Some witnesses on the scene were uncooperative.

Brown released a video on his official Instagram account. The profanity laced video has Brown saying that he is fed up with police showing up to his house. Brown stated “Every three months, y’all come up with something, bro. What is it? What’s going to be next?” he asked, adding, “At the same time, when I call police for stalker people … they don’t come until the next day.”

Brown’s most famous dust up with the law is when he assaulted his then girlfriend singer Rihanna, after a night out on the town in 2009.

According to the Associated Press, Brown was released late Tuesday after posting bail of $250,000.

  • Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin with the Guilty Ones to appear at Earlville Opera House

Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin are well known as founders of the prominent Los Angeles band the Blasters, which existed where blues, punk, country, and rockabilly found a way to intertwine and helped spark the resurgence of what has come to be known as roots rock or Americana music. In the late 1980’s, the brothers went their separate ways with solo acts and side projects, until rejoining forces for 2014’s Grammy nominated Common Ground, a tribute to Big Bill Broonzy. Dave Alvin’s driving guitar work, along with Phil Alvin’s powerful howling vocals, and backed by the Guilty Ones, make for an irresistible sound on last year’s release, Lost Time, also available from Yep Roc Records. That recording saw Dave and Phil continue to pay homage to their influences, and includes four songs written by Big Joe Turner, who they had met when still teenagers. Turner had been a friend and mentor to the Alvins until his passing in 1985.

As for the enduring appeal of the music they play and cover, Dave Alvin has said, “In some ways, this type of music doesn’t die. It goes through bleak periods or droughts, but I think there’s always going to be a type of kids like us, who are looking for something else. We may not be in the majority, but there will always be a sizable minority of oddballs that find purpose in old music, find meaning in the older music, and then take it wherever they’re going to take it from there.”

On Friday, September 2, the Earlville Opera House will present Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin with The Guilty Ones, along with special guest opening performer Sarah Borges, beginning at 8:00 p.m.

The Earlville Opera House is an intimate, historic building originally constructed in 1892. A limited number of tickets remain available for the show, and may be purchased through the Earlville Opera House.
