  • Hearing Aide: Root Shock ‘Root Shock’

    It’s been a long time coming for Syracuse roots soul reggae group Root Shock to finally lay down some tracks in the studio to produce the record fans have been lustfully longing for. Their self titled debut is an authentic embodiment of the magnetizing performances that have continued to draw in larger crowds wherever they go. The Root Shock fam is: Jessica Brown (vocals/percussion), Bill Eppel (bass), Nick Kaczmar (keyboards/electronics) Dan Valvassori (guitar), Phil Grajko (guitar/vocals), Fafa Fain (drums/vocals) and Jason Randall (percussion/theremin).

    root shock march madnessRoot Shock has also attracted a diverse fan base because their identity cannot be pigeonholed into the reggae genre. Their varied blend of soul and funk guided by the potency of Jessica Brown’s weighty vocals sets them apart from the droves of white boy reggae groups offering little variation from one another.

    Feeding off the hype from a radio spotlight on 105.9 The Rebel with Dave Frisina, and artist profiles in two separate Syracuse publications in the same week, Root Shock gained plenty of momentum going into their December 17 album release party at Funk ‘n Waffles Downtown. Now, with the album officially out, the band is standing tall and branching out to share the fruits of countless long hours spent in the studio. Curious about the new album, I posed a few questions to shed some light on the inner workings of the thirteen-song compilation.

    Ally Dean: Jason “Jocko” Randall who produced your record at More Sound Recording Studio in Syracuse is now performing percussion with Root Shock during live performances. Is he a long-term fixture? When Root Shock branches out into more extensive touring will Jocko be part of your entourage or is he more of an added spice for local ‘Cuse shows?

    Phil Grajko: Jocko has not only been a huge asset to the band as a producer/sound engineer, he’s also become a close friend and collaborator, both on and off the stage. Having him come on board as a percussionist felt totally natural and easy. His involvement with the band is totally voluntary, and while he’s definitely busy running a successful recording studio, he’s expressed that he loves playing with us and will continue to make himself available as often as possible. He’s already signed on to play several out-of-town gigs with us, so we certainly welcome his presence and count him as a member.

    AD: To follow that up, is it ever weird having your record producer performing with you? Obviously the members of Root Shock have been playing together for several years and know how they want the band to sound but Jocko also has an incredible ear for how he thinks music should sound. Is it ever a contentious issue?

    PG: I think an important point to make is that the band has managed to stay in a pretty steady state of evolution. We’ve had lineup changes from the beginning, and an addition or subtraction of a member is always going to affect the overall feel. Root Shock functions very democratically, so when someone voices an opinion, it’s always heard and respected, often implemented. Having Jocko on board has forced a lot of us to sharpen our attentiveness to some of the finer details of the production/songwriting process. It’s been great having his input, but ultimately decisions are made collectively. There have certainly been some differences of opinion, but the mutual respect we all share for one another has cultivated a really easy environment for those differences to be reconciled.

    AD: The opening of both “Freedom” and “Babylon Tree” contain this echoey chorus that is stylistically reminiscent of classic Jamaican reggae group The Congos. Is it an intentional nod to them?

    PG: “Freedom” and “Babylon Tree” are what I’d call the ‘heavy roots’ tunes on the record. Several of the members (including Jocko) have a deep appreciation for some of the ‘dubbier’, delay/reverb laden roots reggae sounds that came out of Jamaica in the 70’s, and The Congos rank high on our list of the greats from that era. So yes, you could say we’ve drawn some influence from that world.

    AD: Jess, your vocals throughout this album contain the same gut wrenching force you deliver in live performances but in a slightly more controlled manner. Was it difficult for you to translate what you do on stage with what makes sense for a recorded project?

    Jessica Brown: Honestly it was a little challenging. As a mostly live performer who feeds off of the crowds energy and emotions, I had to really channel my own emotions into the songs. Which I do live as well, but this time with my voice under a microscope. It’s a very different experience being in the studio than being on stage in front of a crowd of people. I usually don’t think too much about what I do for a live performance, which is part of the beauty of the experience. There’s a lot of improvisation. For the album, I definitely thought more about note choices and what words and feelings I wanted to emphasize. I really enjoyed the process, even though it was a little scary. But I’m excited to get back into the studio since I feel more confident and experienced this time around!

    AD: Making a record can be an exciting and inspirational endeavor but also a laborious undertaking that tests the limits and patience of band members. Now that the album is finished, do you feel stronger as a band moving forward?

    PG: It was all of those things! We feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to create this album. We all love each other as people. We believe in each other as musicians and songwriters. We had faith in Jocko and More Sound Studio to create a truly memorable product that was also honest and representative of our real-life sound. In the months leading up to recording, we often referred to our rehearsals as ‘boot camp’ sessions. We trained hard and saw a lot of progress during this period. The whole process before, during and after making the album turned us into better individual musicians and a better band overall. There’s no doubt that we’re a stronger unit. There’s a confidence and a steadiness that wasn’t nearly as pronounced as it is now. And it’s making its way into our newer material in a big way, so we’re excited!

    Review:

    The songs are peppered with Brown’s reflections on her life experiences playing on religious motifs, standing up for what’s right, love, loss, honoring both the natural world and the gift of life itself. While some songs seek to provoke the listener to heighten their mental awareness, others serve as curative tools for self healing through deeply personal, intimate lyrics. The words are delivered through an interfusion of springy beats and heavier instrumental grooves delivering musical diversity that outcompetes a majority of existing reggae.

    The album opens boldly with an onslaught of playful hand percussion, a stomping bass line and a delightfully whimsical whirl of organ in “Come Alive.” This song is a call urging listeners to free their minds from captivity and to open their eyes to the reality around them. It’s a danceable memorandum relevant to the turbulent political and social chaos that pervades human existence. Brown’s impressive vocal range is on full display, particularly towards the end. She hits the notes with crisp clarity as she’s nearly screaming the words “come alive” like there’s a demon holding a knife to her throat.

    “Sunlight” lightens the mood with a breezy, feelgood melody imploring the listener to look within and create the life they want for themselves with the help of a little honest soul searching. The lyrics offer an uplifting four-minute therapy session as Brown cheerfully chirps:

    “If you’re soul doesn’t feel right inside,
    break down those walls that you’re hiding behind
    Happiness comes with the sunlight of a brand new day”

    The brisk opening bass line, uninterrupted tick of tambourine and pulsating organ on “Freedom” forms an underlying urgency before entrancing choral repetition of the word “freedom” opens the sound by creating an expansive distance. This elusive quality complements lyrics speaking to the compelling drive to discover that sense of purpose which can often evade us. “Babylon Tree” is the only song with Grajko on lead vocals and offers that dubbier old school reggae tone. Again the lyrics draw attention to a need for social consciousness:

    “Can’t you see your system is a vampire
    Insatiable wildfire that’s poisoning the air we breathe?
    Here we stand on the brink of evolution
    Yet your minds are on your power grabs of greed
    Don’t need your cursed cash to find some soil and plant some seeds
    But I’ll die on my feet before I live upon my knees”

    “Sage” detours from the overall uptempo rhythm felt through most of the album in exchange for a more delicate, sensual blues tone. It takes its sweet time building tension with a hauntingly melancholy solo from Grajko which sets the stage for Brown to build off it with more of her jaw dropping vocal strength. “Boss Battle” follows as a quick and dirty jam, the only song with no vocals. It’s rather repetitive, not terribly exciting, but makes for a good transition song during live performances.

    Having lost her mother to cancer at age 20, Brown pays tribute to a lost but not forgotten role model in tender love ballad “Sweet Reunion.” Anyone who has dealt with passing loved ones can easily relate to this affectionate homage. The tone is triumphant even in the face of tragic loss, a coming-to terms-reckoning that leaves the listener feeling at peace.

    “Cup” is a lighthearted celebration of love with a buoyant feel, followed poignantly by “Games,” a heavier song, representative of someone who has been dragged through the dirt by a relationship gone wrong. Accompanied by Syracuse trombonist Melissa Gardiner, the horn addition adds great depth to this tune.

    The album culminates with an elevating, uptempo song called “Love Spirit,” with lyrics giving thanks for the strength born from a life of independence. Right at the end of the album, we also get a one-verse taste of Fain’s smooth and soothing, low octave vocals. We leave this thirteen-song journey having danced and cried to a range of relatable experiences. Though many will tempt to emulate Brown as they shamelessly sing along, Root Shock is not responsible for any vocal chords damaged in the process. Root Shock’s self titled debut album will be available wherever music is sold, and will be released on streaming sites within the next few weeks.

  • Bumpin Uglies Jam out at Nietzsche’s

    Buffalo’s Nietzsche’s got a healthy dose of reggae on December 3, thanks to the smell of weed in the air and a band from Annapolis, Maryland called Bumpin Uglies, with Buffalo their latest stop on a tour promoting their new album, Keep It Together.”

    Bumpin Uglies, made up of Brandon Hardesty on lead vocals and guitar, Dave Wolf on bass and backing vocals, and TJ Haslett on drums, have quite the resume for a modern reggae band. Since forming in 2008, the Uglies have recorded 3 LP’s, 2 EP’s, a live album, and constant touring in the form of eight national tours and many more regional tours, including performances at Warped Tour and California Roots. On their tours, they’ve stopped in Buffalo seven times.

    The tone of the show was set even before the band took the stage. During one of the opening acts, a Buffalo reggae band named Reggie Childs got the crowd grooving thanks to the help of the main band’s fan group, the Uglies Nation, whose members danced near the stage and kept a drumbeat going on wooden boxes by the merchandise stand. This continued well into the main show, which briefly had beach balls pulled down from the space’s chandelier.

    It’s hard to call the Uglies style traditional reggae. It’s more a combination of that, plus some occasional fast ska tempos, dub vocal and guitar effects, and some good ol’ alt-rock. A good example is one of their new songs, “Place Your Bets.” The verses and chorus come off as your usual reggae with a bit of dub thrown in, but the instrumental breaks play off like a 311 song. Add a few reverb-laden guitar solos and you’ll have a good idea what these guys sound like.

    Given there were a sizable amount of Uglies fans present, the band had great crowd interaction. Hardesty would ask for shots, get a reaction out of saying he saved his drinking just for tonight, and share stories regarding songs like “Bad Decisions” and “Officer O’Hurley.” A fair amount of the show was spent on their new album, with songs like “Load in Load Out” and “Sorry I’m Not Sorry” getting a fair share of audience participation. The odd thing about the set was that on their albums, a horn section will occasionally be present, adding more reggae cred to their songs. There was no horn section present for the show, which didn’t take away that much, but could’ve added a bit more.

    Still, it was a fun evening for those in attendance, even for those who appear to have been at several of the band’s shows already. We’ll definitely be hearing from these guys again soon if the topic of modern American reggae music ever comes up, and how it can effortlessly co-opt other styles into it’s own.

  • THE PORTAL Opens at the Minetta Lane Theatre

    Off-Broadway “modern Shamanic journey,” THE PORTAL, opened this weekend to a spiritually minded audience at The Minetta Lane Theatre. Before stepping foot inside the half-filled preview, I was informed that this groundbreaking concept incorporated elements of a live concert, choreographed dance performance, and movie all in one. THE PORTAL soundtrack is now available and I feel that the show flows even better by pre-listening to the mythological themes presented in the lyrics and compositions by Tierro Lee and Luke Comer with Charles Newman and David Sisko.

    Frontman Billy Lewis Jr., most recently credited on Fox’s “Glee,” appears on stage and sonically narrates the dreamlike adventure of Dante, through inspirational and symbolic landscapes, Alex Grey-influenced imagery and psychedelic desserts that I assume were once visited by Jim Morrison.  The audience is introduced to the voyage with songs like “Eclipse” and “Greeting,” sung by Lewis as the film, starring Dante (Christopher Soren Kelly), is projected on the large screen behind him. The eclectic mix of tribal and electronic beats, modern dance music and monstrous rock riffs are brought to life by percussionist Gilly Gonzalez and guitarist Paul Casanova who also appear on and off stage from scene to scene.

    Dante’s inner-demons appear to be haunting him in the film as actors portraying the same characters can be found roaming the theatre floor to terrorize and intrigue the audience.Fans of electronic giants like EOTO, The Disco Biscuits, and Beats Antique will appreciate the deep and transformational grooves during songs like “Trance,” “Synth” and “Space Weaver” while Jessica Aronoff and Nicole Spencer interpretively dance their way on and off the stage in between songs and themes. While there is not much live acting of any kind, there is a ritualistic Burning Man-influenced dance routine in nearly every song bringing the art forms together in a very unique fashion.

    The only way to truly understand THE PORTAL is to expect the unexpected and dive right in. Creative Director, Luke Comer, has developed a new way to present a rock opera story off-Broadway. As an audience member, each person can relate to many of the human experiences presented on screen and on stage while still enjoying live music, dance and film. Tickets can be purchased for Wednesday-Friday performances at 8PM and for Saturday performances at 5PM and 9PM.

  • Long Island’s Bête Noire Offers a Ska Twist on Christmas

    Desmond Dekker, Dandy Livingston, The Clash, The Specials. These artists aren’t typically associated with Christmas. Long Island‘s Bête Noire is out to change that perception with the release of its new Christmas single, “A Message to Rudolph.”

    bete noireThe song is heavily influenced by The Specials’ 2 tone remake of Dandy Livingstone’s reggae classic “Rudy, A Message to You,” recalling the infamous rude boy reindeer’s tale of one foggy Christmas Eve in a campy video.

    Bête Noire is a music collective based in Long Island. Members of the collective appearing in the video play with the bands Oogee Wawa, Aqua Cherry, Radio 4 and Hot and Ugly.

  • Nitro Fest, featuring Beats Antique, Ignites Longmont, CO

    In retrospect, I am a bit surprised there was no carnival barker in candy cane-striped pants with a handlebar mustache shouting, “Step Right Up, Ladies and Gentlemen!” There was the obvious, the circus tent. And the carnie stilt walkers, acrobats and aerialists. But it wasn’t a circus. It was a beer festival. Or was it?

    Last week, local Colorado brewers, Left Hand Brewing Company, sponsored their annual Nitro Beer festival on the lawn of an open park in Longmont. There were long lines of people holding shot glasses of nitrogen infused craft beers from several craft brewers around the country. But that is where the resemblance to typical beer fests ended. Left Hand instead threw a vaudevillesque party in which every participant was in formal masquerade/steampunk attire. There were fire performers, jugglers, hoopers, and acrobats hanging from fabric attached to the high tent ceiling. And there was Beats Antique.  Their unique blend of Old World gypsy electronica, along with the dizzying visuals from fire and acrobat performances by Lunar Fire and Fractal Tribe, transformed a beer promotional event into a bewitching evening of stylish costumes, art and music.

    Beats Antique closed out the evening on an intimately-sized stage while celebrating the birthday of their percussionist, Tommy Cappel.

    Punctuated with a belly dancing stage show and throbbing gypsy beats, the stage shuddered with gale-force energy from inspired performers and rabid fans, jumping and clawing at the stage. Needless to say, I didn’t spend much time in beer lines for refills. The circus was in town, and I sure didn’t want to miss any of the razzle and dazzle. The Nitro Fest last week was the greatest show on earth of beer festivals.

  • Jam for Tots Benefit Shows Kick off November 25 in Tannersville

    Jam for Tots returns to the Capital Region of New York for the 10th year in a row, with a series of performances that bring the live music community together in supporting children in need this holiday season.

    jam for totsHosted by Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip, the event started as a way to help make less fortunate children happy and doing so through music for a positive cause. Working with The Marines Corps, who run Toys for Tots, the events grew from one in 2007 to nine in 2013, while keeping a focus on the Northeast as an area of need.

    “Our goal for 2016 is to make as many children happy on Christmas Day and make sure that every person that comes to Jam for Tots leaves happy and glad that they took the time to come,” said Weiler. “We go to great lengths every year to make sure people have a blast at Jam for Tots with raffles, giveaways, great bands and all around good vibes. When a town and a good promoter get behind these events, there is really nothing that can stop them from being successful. This year all four shows are in places that love Jam for Tots and are all about it so they are all gonna rock.”

    The four Jam for Tots events kick off on Friday, November 25 in Tannersville at The Spinning Room. Bring a toy for a child as your cover charge for the shows.

  • Cross Country Interview with the One and Only Zach Deputy

    Talents in the music world like Zach Deputy are a rare breed. The multi-instrumentalist singer and songwriter is from Savannah, Georgia ( I thought he told ya?) He is currently  on tour to support his newest album Wash It In The Water. With his upcoming show November 29 at Buffalo Iron Works he recently took the time to talk with me about tour life, our great state of New York and much more.

    Tim Merrill: Where in the world is Zach Deputy today on this fifth day of November?

    Zach Deputy: That’s today I’m assuming (haha)? I just crossed the California border into Arizona. We are in Tempe, AZ right now. I’ve got a show in Tempe tonight at the Marquee Theater

    TM: You’ve got a show later this month in Buffalo. The show is five days after Thanksgiving. How do you plan on spending your Thanksgiving?

    ZD: What am I doing for Thanksgiving? Probably hanging out with the Worm. A bunch of Wormtown Family. I’ve spent Thanksgiving there two or three times over the past few years.

    TM: You’re no stranger to playing in Buffalo. Is there anything you like to do when you pass through town?

    ZD: I’m always down to play disc golf. I love the wings at the Anchor Bar. Some people claim they’re the best. Some people don’t. But yea, that place is awesome. Those wings are legit!

    TM: When you’re  on tour traveling through the rest of the great state of New York how do you like to spend your time off stage?

    ZD: I love Keuka Lake. Swimming in that lake is awesome! I’ve been sick before and jumped in and felt instantly better. I love New York. Lake George, tons of places upstate. Except for the winters. I’m a Southern boy

    TM: You’re latest album Wash It In The Water was released a few months ago. What song(s) are you having fun playing on tour off the album?

    ZD: I’ve been playing a few different versions of “Put It In The Boogie.” Maybe four different versions but they are always different.  I’ve had a lot of fun opening up the jam on that song, especially the solo.

    TM: At what age did you pick up your first instrument?

    ZD: I’ve always told people that I played my voice first. Before my recollection it was there. But I picked up the guitar at 13. Got one for my 13th birthday.

    TM: Whats in store for Zach Deputy in 2017?

    ZD: I’m always trying to work on my craft. I’m always trying to give back the love that was so freely given to me. Just trying to make this thing bigger and better. You know, onward and upward. Wherever that takes me!

  • Hearing Aide: The Nth Power “To Be Free – Live”

    low-res-to-be-freeThe Nth Power’s latest release To Be Free – Live is exuberantly funky, bursting with spirituality, and clearly on a mission to inspire! After touring to promote their 2015 release Abundance, The Nth Power obliged their fans by creating this nine-track live recording during two nights of performances in Boston, Massachusetts and one night in the band’s hometown of Brooklyn, New York.

    This feel-good 10-track album captures something that you can’t get from a studio recording – the authentic energy that can only come from bearing your soul before a live audience hanging on every note. Anchored in the jazz and funk of New Orleans, The Nth Power’s heady gospel tones and inspirational messages create a well-grounded album which promotes understanding through music. This, my friends, is what love sounds like.

    “Gil said the revolution won’t be televised. These days I start to see it with my own eyes. The media has got you fused with a state of fear. Got you believing all the hate and lies that you feel. I used to believe everything that they tell me was true. But since 9/11 I know I stay lied to. Go smash your TV. You can choose to be free. Stand up and be your own page in history.”

    The lyrics to the song “Truth,”, are a nod to Gil Scott-Heron’s political statement “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” With it’s polished yet quirky world-music feel, “Truth” is the track you’d be most likely to hear on your local college radio station. With powerful and poignant lyrics, the song is a call for action, and proof that music is just as powerful of a weapon in this day and age as it was in the 1970’s.

    “Right Now,” featuring a funky Motown vibe, is a reminder to live in the moment, and “celebrate what you’ve been given. This life is so worth living right now.”

    The genre-melding song “Could It Be” mixes a Doobie-Brothers-esque feel –  specifically a throwback to the 1973 hit “Drift Away” – with smooth and sultry vocals, ending in a round of “Stir It Up with You,” conjuring up a bit of Bob Marley’s spirit.

    “Take My Soul” is one of the highlights of the album with the scream of the organ ushering us into roadhouse-style guitar licks and smokey vocals.

    Each member of the quartet brings varied musical backgrounds. Nikki Glaspie toured as Beyonce’s drummer for five years before joining up with Dumpstaphunk. Bassist Nate Edgar plays with the likes of Groovechild and John Brown’s Body. Singer and Guitarist Nick Cassarino came from the Jennifer Hartswick Band and toured with Big Daddy Kane. The newest member, Courtney J’Mell Smith, toured with Braimah and was musical director of a church in St. Louis, which comes through in the strong gospel tones on “To Be Free.”

    Since 2013, the Nth Power has performed at renowned festivals including Electric Forest, Bear Creek, Catskill Chill, North Coast Music Festival, and in just the last six months, the group has performed more than 50 shows in 21 states, along with making their second international appearance.   • NYS Music Hops the Pond for a Traditional Celtic Experience

    There is nothing like experiencing music in its original form and in its original setting first hand.  Whether it’s Johnny Cash or Patsy Cline at the Ryman Theater, Peter Gabriele at The Roxy, the Beatles at Shea Stadium or Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park, seeing and feeling it live in the moment far exceeds anything you can possibly hear through a recording.

    A fan of Celtic music, it has been a lifelong dream for this music photojournalist to be able to take the trek to Ireland one day and experience the music scene first hand. After all, the traditional Celtic sound is a cornerstone to my beloved bluegrass and country music which I tend to gravitate towards back here in the states.  When the opportunity came to travel together with my good friends and musicians, The Elders and The Moxie Strings, as they took their annual trip with family and friends, I jumped at the chance.  Working together with these bands for years now, it was the perfect introduction to Ireland.

    For those who may not be familiar with them, The Elders are a Celtic rock band based out of Kansas City, MO who constantly set the bar higher with the quality of music on each album they write and produce. The Moxies, who hail from Michigan, blend an edgy sound to your traditional strings and percussion, growing a new generation of musicians and Celtic music lovers.  These two bands meld together perfectly and offer a rock and bluegrass edge to the regular traditional Celtic sound.  Amassing fans all over America, it’s never difficult for them to fill a few buses to take the journey annually. So off I went.

    Hopping the pond, we made our way across the country, stopping to play in the cities of Sligo, Galway, Cork, Arklow and Dublin. At the first stop in Sligo, the bands took to the stage at 5th on Teeling, a small local pub that usually began hopping later in the evening.  They had no issues filling the venue quickly with the fans from America and those locals that made their way in from the streets as the music filtered out,  luring them inside. After a riveting set from both bands, the bar was set high to achieve a more electric set as they continued on their tour.

    As we began to make our way south, next on the map was the bustling city of Galway where the bands were scheduled to perform at the amazing Quays the following night, located in the heart of the city. As we arrived in Galway, we set out to explore the area and happened into a small pub called the  Tig Cóilí which was only a few doors down from The Quays.  Best known for it’s Traditional Irish Session, musicians and patrons often crowd this pub to partake in ongoing music sessions.  Finding a spot in the front window amongst the other musicians, they join in and play whatever tune is being played at that moment. As quietly as they arrive, they depart when they need to go while not disrupting the sound in the least.  This introduction to a true Irish session was refreshing and special as that is what music is all about – the blending of talents and sounds to make the tune.  Although this was only my first session, it would be a foreshadowing of what I was to experience as the trip unfolded.

    As the sunrise came up, our troops dispersed on adventures to many a site within the area, however, they later came back together to The Quays that evening for what was a memorable night of music.  This venue, one of many in and amongst the pedestrian walkway, adjacent to Eyre Square (aka John F. Kennedy Memorial Park), offered passers by a unique experience inside.  Whether it was the sights and touches of the venue, the smells and tastes of delicious food and beverages being served or sounds coming from this venue, The Quays offered patrons something to tantalize each of their senses.

    This, hands down, was the coolest venue the bands had an opportunity to play in my opinion.  The stage, set on three alternating tiers, offered a backdrop of old organ pipes and stained glass that had one time been in a French church.  Filled to the brim with American tour mates and college students that seemed to overtake the area on this evening, The Elders and Moxies were once again able to top the performances of the previous gig. Whether it was the Moxie’s rendition of Ah Ha’s “Take On Me” or The Elders singing my favorites,  “Galway Girl” and then closing with “Message In A Bottle”, they definitely left their mark on this city.

    As we set on to the next stop on our journey, the city of Cork, it seemed almost impossible to live up to the prior shows as they began their set at Cyprus Avenue.  Another cool city with a bustling night life, it was a shame that this venue rushed us in and out as they had a tech show immediately following our sets. Being rushed and poorly lit to boot, this venue was not one of my favorites but of course, in true Elders/Moxie fashion, they put on a show that made those awaiting outside wish they had arrived earlier to enjoy their set as well. It didn’t go unnoticed that while we Americans were there craving everything Celtic, they were there craving everything American. Karmic as it was, it was also here that we welcomed our new friend, a student from Buffalo studying abroad, as she started her first night working at the venue. Go n-éirí an t-ádh leat! Amber.

    The following day we embarked to Arklow, hometown of Ian Byrne, lead singer of The Elders, which is located in the eastern part of the country and within the county of Wicklow. These two days in Arklow were my most favorite for several reasons.  First, the area was absolutely beautiful.  It was as though the Adirondacks of NY and all the best of Ireland merged to become this beautiful lush region with rolling green hills, mountains, waterways and oceanfront.  It truly felt like home to me and the welcome we were given was heartwarming and most meaningful.  Secondly, surrounded by family and friends who welcomed us as though they had known us for years, we all gathered that first evening to the Harbour Bar in Arklow to a small room above the pub where we were met by some amazing local musicians.

    At an extremely long table, we were joined by young and old who would treat us to a true Irish session.  To begin the evening, three of the five musicians that are known as Small Town Crisis (Sean Fox,  Jack Hanlon & Cat Leibowitz) began their acoustic set with amazing performances of original work. They were extremely talented and joined in a few more times throughout the night before exiting to go home and get ready for school the following day.  Meeting  Denis Nolan, the 2015 All Ireland Fleadh Ceoil Champion, was truly a treat as well as he serenaded us with his award winning harmonica playing.  John Stafford joined in with moving vocals and, my favorite, the banjo on several numbers while Aoibhinn Redmond added her melodic touches to tunes throughout the night.  Gabriel Brady, who I believe just released an album, gave a whimsical spin on folky tunes throughout the night leaving us all in stitches while Denis New brought out the bagpipes and filled the room with traditional Celtic tunes.

    Yvonne Kenny, who orchestrated this amazing evening for us, sang and played the bodhran while Chris Steele played some classical violin, moving us almost to tears!  Playing traditional Celtic tunes throughout the night, each performer added yet another highlight to a trip that I couldn’t imagine ever to get better.  To say that the voices of both Naoimh Penston and Denise Brennan (who is known as one of the leads in the Women of Ireland Tour & Riverdance) were angelic is an understatement.  Their beautiful harmonies captivated us all night long.

    Playing and singing, Naoimh also joined in with Ian and longtime friend Fran Harper as they played and sang Men of Erin, a song we all knew and love so much.  Invited to play and sing were we Americans as we vied for the coveted title of the year. Elliott Phillips played and sang while Tim Braun and Isaac and Keenan Reilly joined in with guitar/percussion on a few tunes. Defending her title from last year, Caity Reilly once again set the bar high with a very moving song, while David Sizer swiped the title with his rendition of “Allelujah”.  I really thought it was a tie myself; both pieces were amazing and yet so different. And of course, The Elders and Moxies joined in with bluegrass tunes, traditional Celtic tunes and shared some new music yet to be recorded.  All in all, it was fun, it was spontaneous, it was more than I ever imagined and truly was my favorite part of the whole trip. Thank you, Arklow for such a great evening.

    As this night long session went well into the wee hours, it was only a few hours later that the bands would be hitting the airwaves to the local radio station while The Moxies would be joining Chris Steele and her students at St. Mary’s College to practice for a very special performance that evening.  The next gig would be right there at the Arklow Bay Hotel, and all proceeds from this show would be donated towards Nolan House, Rathdrum and Arklow Music and Arts campaign to secure the provision of a Music and Arts center in Arklow.

    As the banquet room began filling up, it was apparent how truly loved the bands and the causes were to the town. And, although I’m sure a bit apprehensive, the orchestra from St. Mary’s College nailed their performances and the night was a smashing success as Arklow celebrated with the Americans. It was the cherry on top as Denis New once again joined the bands on the bagpipes in full attire.

    As the tour headed out and left the hometown and headed north, it would be on the top of the hill in Glencullen at Johnnie Foxes where the final show would occur. I could think of no better place either than this whimsical pub for the final setting as a wonderful, fun filled two weeks of music in Ireland came to a close.  With delicious food, Guiness, and the most whimsical decor ever, it just seemed fitting to end on such a high note, literally.

    As the buses made their way up the steep hill, overlooking Dublin at night with its twinkling lights, it was probably a good thing we couldn’t see the drop off on the side of the road.  We arrived, were seated and fed, and somehow found a square of real estate to dance along with the bands.  The party was complete,  the music a hit, and with family and friends from all over the world, this hop across the pond definitely left an impression on this journalist, leaving her longing for more very soon.

  • Nietzche’s Treats Buffalo to First ‘Folkfest’ Across Five Days Next Week

    This Fall, Nietzche’s debuts their first ever “Folkfest,” a 5-day festival featuring 48 musical acts from Wednesday, Nov. 9 through Sunday, Nov. 13.

    Folkfest is a follow up to a successful Jazz-Fest this past spring, and a new direction for Allentown and Nietzche’s that aims to bring together a wide range of musicians, including local faces and nationally touring acts.

    Wednesday

    Music will kick off on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. with Tyler Westcott and his trio performing gypsy jazz and old-time swing. The headliner on Wednesday, Folkfaces, will take the stage at 11:00 p.m. Folkfaces, a local Buffalo band, is known for their energetic, whiskey-drinking Americana music, fused with beautiful ballads. Music will go until 1:00 a.m., alternating sets between the main stage in the back, and the front barroom. Other acts on Wednesday include Sam Marabella & band, The Brothers Blue and Nickel City String Band.

    Thursday

    Thursday is a Singer-Songwriter Showcase, with 15 performances over the course of the night! Each set will be 20 minutes long, with music kicking off at 8:00 p.m. and going until 1:00 a.m. The showcase will feature new artists and well-known local faces to the Buffalo music scene, including Bobby Angel, Joe Bellanti, Jungle Steve, Jack Topht, and Jeff Goldstein.

    Friday

    Friday will feature both local artist and touring acts, and will begin with a happy hour led by The Neville Francis Band. The Shelf Life String Band will kick the night off at 10:00 p.m. in the front barroom. Rear View Ramblers, the first headliner of the night, will then take the main stage at 10:30 p.m.

    Rear View Ramblers draw inspiration for their sound directly from Buffalo, playing music that reflects “struggling days being young and broke, to playing music in Allentown and the Elmwood Village, to finding true love in a dive bar on the most random occasions.”

    The Observers takes the stage at 11:30 p.m. in the front barroom, taking you on a journey of the human experience through music. The next headliner, nationally touring act, DiTrani Brothers, begins at 12:30 a.m. on the main stage.

    DiTrani Brothers, Bobby and Walker, originally hail from North Bend, Washington, but began traveling coast to coast with their songs in 2013. Since then, the duo has evolved into a full band, complete with Dana Hubanks on washtub bass, and Eddie Gaudet on drums. Together, the band plays originals inspired by ragtime, Roma swing, and the traditions of these genres. After DiTrani Brothers, Friday’s music wraps up with a final performance in the front barroom at 1:30am from TCBand.

    Saturday

    Saturday’s festivities with the first headlining act of the evening, The Steam Donkeys, performing at 8:30 p.m. on the main stage. With a long and well documented history as one of Buffalo’s longest standing country rock/folk outfits, The Steam Donkeys have seen their fair share, with multiple national tours, album releases, and lineup changes since its formation in 1991.

    Local acts Catskill Mountain Boys and Rob Falgiano continue the party, before headliner Tough Old Bird hits the front barroom at 10:30 p.m. Formed in Fillmore, NY by songwriting brothers Matthew and Nathan Corrigan, Tough Old Bird provides a blend of authentic folk and blues that create a vision of the rural landscape it comes from. The group features a mix of electric guitar, accordion, harmonica, and acoustics that provide a sound that is at once both ancient and modern.

    Seth Faergolzia’s 23 Psaegz follows Tough Old Bird with a set at 11:30 p.m. on the main stage. Touted as the 2010 successor to Seth Faergolzia’s 13-year project, Dufus, 23 Psaegz carries on the warm, weird legacy of Dufus by “stretching the boundaries of musical experience with unmatched craze and care”. Although the group was originally formed to perform Seth’s puppet-rock-opera “23 Psaegz”, it carried on to eventually become a collaborative backing ensemble for Faergolzia’s web of musical endeavors.

    After a performance in the front barroom by Twenty Thousand Strongmen, final headliner of the evening, PA Line, will wrap up Saturday night on the main stage at 1:00 a.m. PA Line exhibits an original performance with musical styles ranging from Mumford and Sons, to Simon and Garfunkel. Each performance aims to get the feet dancing and create intimate emotional connections between artists and fan.

    Sunday

    After such a headliner-packed Saturday night, Sunday’s music starts in the early afternoon, with Michael Faltyn kicking off on the main stage at 2:00 p.m. Performers alternate between the front barroom and main stage until the festival concludes with the weekend’s final performance by Ann Phillippone at 6:00 p.m.

    Singer-songwriters Kathryn Koch and Sam Sugarman will provide support for the headliner for the evening, Tiny Rhymes, who will perform at 5 p.m. on the main stage. Tiny Rhymes is a folk group that draws more inspiration from the classical, chamber, and indie worlds than the country of bluegrass realm of folk. On Tiny Rhymes’ song-writing abilities, Artvoice writes, “Some people like to write songs while others tell stories. Vocalist/guitarist Sharon Mok tells her audience a story. Her voice floats beautifully above the acoustic sounds of her ‘chamber-folk’ band only to be matched with the soothing sounds of cello and violin.” The group features members all classically trained, but remaining instinctive in their composition and arranging choices.
