Steely Dan has announced their latest Beacon Theatre residency which will take place for eight nights. The shows start on Oct. 6 and ends on the 17.
These nights will include Steely Dan performing their whole 1977 album Aja and 1980 album Gaucho with a few select hits. There will also be two nights focusing on their greatest hits such as “Do it Again”, “Reelin In The Years”, “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number.” Fans will be able to help pick the set list on October 16.
An AMEX pre-sale runs May 28 – June 4 before tickets go on sale to the general public June 5. Multi-night ticket packages will be available.

After Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar’s sudden closure this past weekend, several local bands found themselves with a few weekends free. In an effort to assist artists keep their schedules in tact, Revolutions together with East Coast Music Productions decided to step up and pick up one of the bands to keep the music rolling. Located directly across the corridor on the third floor at Destiny USA, Revolutions is another large chain venue offering patrons The Red Brick Grille eatery, together with two bars, 24 lanes of bowling, an arcade, and a live music venue.

One of our recent ‘Artists To Watch’ national country music artist, Billy Lord, was one of the acts originally scheduled to perform at Toby Keith’s this coming week. Unfortunately the venue suddenly closed without notice to patrons, acts, or even staff. In true show biz fashion though the show will go on, just across the walkway this time.
The show is still May 23 and will begin at 8pm. The first 75 fans through the door will receive a signed copy of Billy’s newest CD, National Anthem — as well as a chance to win an acoustic guitar at the end of the evening. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time online or at the door the night of the event.
Post-punk romantics The Church released their 21st studio album album, Further/Deeper late last year and are bringing 35 years of recordings to North America on a co-headlining tour with art rock stalwarts The Psychedelic Furs. The Church recently premiered the first video from their newest album, Laurel Canyon , it’s thick and lush with layered acoustics, synths and harmonies, reminiscent of their huge hit, “Under The Milky Way” from 1988.

The Psychedelic Furs are practically a perfect match for the tour and will be joining The Church on many of the dates. They’re also touring the east coast in May by themselves. Richard Butler, along with his brother Tim, still maintain their uncanny ability to write songs pleasing to the ear, while questioning their subject. Surfacing in the wake of punk rock, their melodious and thoughtful material sometimes put them in the category of a synth band, but don’t be confused – even if you still love “Love My Way”, don’t forget “Pretty In Pink” – that was inspiration for the 1986 John Hughes film of the same name.

Hot off their brand new album Rivals, there is no rest for the wicked as Coal Chamber continue its next tour on US soil, and this time, industrial metallers Fear Factory will co-headline with them. Special guest on this tour will be Devil You Know (featuring Howard Jones former singer of Killswitch Engage) on select dates. On other select dates Jasta, the solo project of Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta (which he rarely brings on the road) will be given a slot to play. Saint Ridley and Madlife will be opening every date. The tour starts in Tucson, AZ on July 24 and ends in Santa Ana, CA on Aug. 22. The tour includes three stops in New York State including Aug. 8 at Rochester’s Water Street Music Hall, Aug. 11 at New York City’s Irving Plaza, and Aug. 12 at Poughkeepsie’s The Chance Theater. On those dates Jasta will be the select band appearing.
In other related news, bassist Tony Campos (Soulfly, Prong, Attika 7, Static-X, etc.) has joined Fear Factory and exited Soulfly earlier this month. Fear Factory’s full lineup has not been revealed.

Whether or not you have a ticket for one of the Grateful Dead’s Fare Thee Well shows at Soldier Field -Chicago will be the place to be 4th of July weekend. The windy city will host dozens of after shows and one very special art event. Part of the mix for the Dead Head invasion of Chicago is “PhanArt Presents: In All Good Company, Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Art.” The one-of-a-kind free art show will take place Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5 2015 from 12pm-6pm daily at the Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago, IL – only a mile from Soldier Field.
Exhibited art includes limited edition posters, clothing, pins, tye-dyes, books, photography and other unique Grateful Dead inspired art from a variety of vendors and artists. Musical performances from Chicago bands Jack Straw and Under the Willow will compliment the artists throughout the art exhibition.

Rusted Root will headline the season for Lake Placid’s free outdoor music series Songs at Mirror Lake.
The lineup this year celebrates the series’ 10th season by bringing back some of the best acts that have played over the last 10 years.
When Rusted Root last played the series in 2013, more than 1,000 people crowded into the tiny park on Lake Placid’s Main Street to dance to the ’90s alternative band with jam elements and world beats.
Other successful acts including Amy Helm, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Lukas Nelson & POTR will also be back.
The free shows run every Tuesday night from the end of June through the middle of August. The shows are played in Mid’s Park, a small park in the middle of the Adirondack village that edges on Mirror Lake. Attendees can dance in the park or paddle over in a boat (or on a dock) and catch the show from the water.

moe. will be the featured artist at an annual benefit for the Children’s Health Fund at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall.
The June 1 benefit features tickets that range from $1,250 to $100,000, but a limited number of $75 balcony tickets are available for moe.rons who want to attend. Concert goers will have to adhere to a business casual dress code.
The evening starts at 8 p.m. with an awards presentation, then moe. will play for a half-hour. A dessert and cocktail reception will follow.
The Children’s Health Fund provides health care to the nation’s most disadvantaged children with 51 mobile health clinics serving more than 80,000 kids throughout the U.S. Those who can’t attend can still help.
moe. also announced Tuesday that they’ll re-release a limited vinyl run of their first studio album “Fatboy,” in honor of the band’s 25th anniversary this year. The record will be on sale this weekend at Summer Camp, and it will be available in stores May 26. The run is limited to 3,000 copies, so get it while you can!
A fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Smell the Love features Albany’s finest and most quirky, interesting, and fragrant, musical talent. The Low Beat is the place to be on the evening of May 23 if you love rock and roll and hate cancer.
Give cancer the glove and rock out with The Maraca Incident, Jillian “Keezamonkee” Matundan and Friends who ride insane distances on their bikes to raise money to fight blood cancer, The Sidd Finch Project, and Message From Vega. Cover change is $10 and donations to kick cancer’s ass are encouraged. The final performance of the night will feature players for all bands.
For the first 25 entrants, purple flashing spike bracelets will be given out, with posters on sale for $5. Door prizes and silent auction will be available throughout the night.
Waking up to the news that our favorite country music venue in Syracuse, Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill, located in Destiny USA mall in Syracuse, packed up and moved out under a cloud of darkness was sad news for sure.

Covering the show Thursday night with Parmalee, I noticed nothing out of the ordinary, as the venue was packed to the gills to enjoy one of country music’s favorite groups. Wait staff was busily serving drinks and meals while patrons crowded the stage ready to party. Then again last night, country music star Chris Cagle was in town to perform to yet another packed bar. NYSMusic staff present covering the show were scooted out upon completion, raising red flags, while ladders littered the venue as signed guitars and memorabilia were beginning to be taken off the walls.

Opening in 2013, the national chain who is named after one of country music’s legends, welcomed several national acts each month while featuring local country music artists throughout the years. Rumors of financial difficulties here and nationwide swirled around the venue. However, after the business caught up on local taxes last year, patrons thought those issues were behind them.
Although it’s named after country music’s Toby Keith, other than his name the country music star has no interest in the chain. Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill was truly one we “loved” to work with, and it will be surely missed by all. We raise our red solo cups to a great run and bid farewell to one of our favorite venues.
UPDATE:
After a few days of letting the news sink in, I couldn’t help but feel that there was so much more to be said about the clandestine closing of Toby Keith’s over the weekend. NYSMusic.com worked closely with the corporate office over the course of the last year so I wanted to reach out to get their side of the story.
John Thomas, Vice President of Marketing for Boomtown Entertainment, parent company to Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill’s graciously spoke with me today regarding the closing. He explained that it was a financial decision surrounded by tense relations with Destiny USA. Assuring me that all questions about past due taxes had been taken care of, he was confident in stating that through litigation all questions will be answered and patrons will understand the decision more so at that time.
I asked him, why so secretive? Why not tell patrons and let them celebrate by raising a red solo cup at a farewell party? He stated that after eight years in the business, there really is never an easy way of doing this. I can see this point of view. If Toby’s announced, there would be backlash, if they didn’t announce, there would be backlash. Either way it’s a no win situation for all involved. John Thomas took this particular closing difficult as he had spent several years up in our area (Rochester) in radio programming, so this location was one he had a personal interest in seeing succeed. The market itself was very receptive, and the shows and crowds outstanding. In fact they had some amazing shows lined up for the remainder of the year for this location, so the closing of the location was not a decision they took lightly when making their decision.
John Thomas asked me to please relay this message to all that frequented the establishment. “It’s a sad day. We are upset that we’ve had to cease operations in Syracuse. We thank everyone in Upstate and Central NY, all of guests, patrons, staff, musicians, country music lovers, and our partner B104.7. It’s an unfortunately situation that we had to make that business decision, but we felt it was in our best interest, and we hope to announce something new in the near future.”
Leaving me wondering what that “something new in the near future” would be, I truly will miss the great times and good music I shared with my readers from Toby’s, and hold out hope that soon a new country music venue to will come to town that I once again can bring my readers all the latest and greatest from Nashville.
Blues legend B.B. King, who influenced generations of blues musicians with his signature guitar sound, has died at age 89. Having recently been hospitalized for diabeted-related dehydration, King took a break from the road in early April and passed away in his sleep in Las Vegas last night.
A member of the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, King performed most recently at The Palace Theatre in April 2014 and at The Massry Center for the Arts in April 2013. While his health was deteriorating and his stage performance less than crisp, King still drew crowds wherever he went, a living legend with fans across the globe.
