  • Guthrie Bell Productions and 102.7 EQX present “Howling on the Hudson” series this summer

    Guthrie Bell Productions and WEQX 102.7 just announced a new music series called “Howling on the Hudson” taking place this summer on the Dutch Apple Cruise Ship. The first round of bands features Eastbound Jesus, Conehead Buddha and Gubbulidis (Twiddle Duo). The series will feature six shows taking place on Tuesday nights. The Dutch Apple Cruise Ship is an ideal venue with three floors, both indoor and outdoor, offering a beautiful scenic view, a full bar and plenty of dance space. The ship boards at 6:30 PM in downtown Albany and departs promptly at 7, returning to dock at 10. Tickets are 22.00 in advance (Available May 1) and 25.00 at the door.

    The Capital District is infamous for the weekly music events such as Rockin on the River in Troy and Albany’s Alive at Five. Here’s hoping this becomes a yearly tradition.

  • Josh Groban to Visit Upstate NY

    Multi-platinum recording artist, Josh Groban has announced a North American Fall Tour and will hit NY multiple times. Groban will make stops in Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo and NYC supporting his new album Stages. The Stages Tour will visit specially selected theaters to give fans a more intimate concert setting versus those accustomed to seeing him perform in arenas.

    Groban will serenade fans at The Beacon Theatre in NYC on Sept. 29,  The Palace Theatre in Albany on Oct. 3, The Landmark Theatre in Syracuse on Oct. 6 and Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo on Oct. 7. Tickets are currently on sale at livenation.com and with every ticket purchase – fans will receive their choice of a physical or digital copy of Stages.

    josh groban NYStages is a collection of Groban’s renditions of some of the best musical theater songs of all time. It was produced by Humberto Gatica and Bernie Herms in both Los Angeles and London’s Abbey Road (with a 75-piece orchestra taboot). The album features songs from Les Miserables, The Wizard of Oz, Sweeny Todd, Phantom of the Opera and much more.

    Groban describes the album as “gorgeously arranged songs that have stood the test of time.” An exclusive edition of the album will be available at Target containing two extra tracks. Until the Stages Tour kicks off in September, Josh Groban will be making plenty of television appearances on Good Morning America on April 28, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Live! with Kelly and Michael on April 29, and Dancing With The Stars on May 5. He will also sing the National Anthem at the 2015 Kentucky Derby on May 2.

  • Get Covered: Aqueous Plays Cake Themed Set in Buffalo

    Aqueous is not a band that takes their craft lightly. Over their nine years of existence they have endlessly tried to stretch the boundaries – A Super Mario Brother’s themed set, a career path minded Will Smith set for Halloween with all four members in different era Fresh Prince attire, and of course the four week themed residency at Nietzsche’s in Buffalo – which included Willy Wonka, Love, Decades and a Mystery Artist theme that featured a night of Beatles music mixed with AQ’s arsenal of originals.

    This past Saturday at Buffalo’s Iron Works would be the latest on the themes from Aqueous – two sets, one original and one set featuring the music of alt-rock heroes Cake. The “Cake-Queous” set featured 12 first time played Cake songs interspersed and quite often interlaced with original music. The sold out crowd could not have been more fulfilled – with many vets expounding (in full Comic Store Guy accent) “Best Show Ever.”

    The good people at Buffalo.FM were on hand with camera’s all over the joint. Buffalo.fm (and wnymedia.net) are huge friends to the New York music scene, releasing tons of audio and video material free for fans and often streaming shows live. Today they released audio of Saturday’s Cake themed set.

  • OMMEGANG Brewery Announces Primus and Dinosaur Jr.

    Primus has announced their 2015 American Summer tour featuring Dinosaur Jr. with 18 dates. The tour kicks off with the All Good Festival in West Virginia on July 10th and will be traveling across country to end in Flagstaff, AZ. Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY will be hosting the dual performances on July 31 by Dan Smalls Presents. Ommegang has their own summer concert series with other guests such as The Pixies, The Avett Brothers, and Old Crow Medicine Show.

    Dinosaur Jr. is an alternative rock band from Massachusetts, formed in 1984 with original members J Mascis (guitar, vocals), Lou Barlow (bass, vocals), and Murph (drums). Through the year, the band has replaced a couple of members and recorded three major-label albums. In 2005, the original line-up reformed and released three more albums thereafter.

    The Primus and Dinosaur Jr. tour will also make stops in Wallingford, CT, the Stone Pony in Asbury, NJ, and Pier 97 in NYC. Tickets for July 31st in Cooperstown will be go on sale Friday and can be purchased at Dansmallpresents.com.

  • Blues-Funk Rockers Lucid Heads South on Upcoming Tour

    Lucid is packing up their gear and getting ready to hit the road for a couple of weeks in early May, with stops in Philadelphia PA, Washington D.C., Asheville, Raleigh and Wilmington, NC and more. The band has a new bus (R.I.P. Lucy), a new drummer by the name of Josh West, and tons of new material. Their fourth studio album, Dirt, is set to be available in May.

    “We’re just excited to get a little time on the road before the festival season starts,” said vocalist and percussionist Lowell Wurster. “Our summer is as packed as it’s ever been, with festivals all over the northeast… But as soon as the fall comes we’ll be back out there touring again.” Lucid’s anticipated fall tour will also probably be in conjunction with the release of their fifth studio album.

    Lucid’s Dirt will be available on Spotify, Last FM, iTunes, Amazon and all of your other favorite online distribution sites. You can catch them live in venues starting in Upstate New York at Rock N Roll Resort on May 1, right on down through North Carolina throughout the beginning of May. Dates announced thus far include:

    In 2007 in an effort to promote independent record stores, and the concept of the record – cd-etc. (you choose the medium) the inception of Record Store Day began.  Several years later  it has become a national holiday in the music business with full on celebrations nationwide.  Artists all over choose this day to release special albums, promotional products, and bring attention to this culture of the Record Store, for this Day in 2015.

  • Holly Bowling to Record Album of Phish Jam Transcriptions ‘Distillation of a Dream’

    Pianist Holly Bowling, known for her transcription and performance of Phish’s “Tahoe Tweezer” announced today the recording of an album of Phish originals, Distillation of a Dream.

    Distillation of a DreamMelding her classical piano chops with a dedicated love of the music of Phish, “Distillation of a Dream” originates from Bowling’s obsession with Phish’s rendition of “Tweezer” from their 7/31/13 Lake Tahoe show. Bowling transcribed this 37-minute improvisational masterpiece note-for-note and arranged it for solo piano. The process, both painstaking and fulfilling, inspired Bowling to transform other Phish songs and well-known live jams into solo piano interpretations as well.

    The dual experiences of studying classical piano since age five and attending close to 300 Phish shows have allowed Holly to unite elements from two divergent musical worlds and synthesize them into a creation all its own. Having transformed several notable Phish jams into solo piano works, Bowling has been fastidious in her commitment to note-for-note renderings of unique live performances of Phish’s music.

    When asked the goal of her recorded album, Bowling stated, “I think it would be really amazing if ‘Distillation of a Dream’ influenced people who listen to Phish to expand their musical tastes into some of the solo piano music out there…and on the other side, for people who listen to classical music and would never dream of going to a Phish show to hear the band’s music in a different setting and maybe fall in love with the incredible music and compositions that this band has created.”

    “Distillation of a Dream” includes two discs, the first highlighting Phish’s intricate songwriting, and the second a tribute to the spontaneous improvisation Phish creates during their live performances.  The second disc, consisting entirely of “jam transcriptions”, contains three piano reinterpretations of standout live performances, including the “Tahoe Tweezer.”  All tracks will be released as a double album on CD and the “Tahoe Tweezer” will also be released on 180 gram vinyl. A portion of the proceeds from sales of “Distillation of a Dream” will benefit The Mockingbird Foundation.

  • New LivePhish Release Celebrates The Spectrum in Toronto, December 12, 1992

    Phish has announced an archival release of 12/12/92 – The Spectrum in Toronto, Ontario. This 1000 capacity venue got quite a treat with a set chock full of Phishy goodness. Check out the announcement below for more details:

    On December 12, 1992, Phish crossed the border to play The Spectrum in Toronto – a dance club with a capacity of about 1,000.     In the year surrounding this show, they released four albums on Elektra and their “Hey-Hole” improvisation exercises were yielding increasingly transcendent excursions onstage. This was Phish’s only performance at The Spectrum, their second Canadian gig, and the 20th show on a 21-date tour.

    Set I featured Foam, Reba, Split Open And Melt, and All Things Reconsidered, which was deftly woven into both “Bouncing Around The Room” and “Run Like An Antelope”. Set II highlights included a “Maze” opener, “The Curtain” > “Tweezer”, and the Davy Crockett “You Enjoy Myself”. The Toronto “Tweezer” deserves special mention for its multiple themes – from full shred to soaring melodies and bent dissonance. The encore was a rare “Ride Captain Ride” in its only pairing with “Tweezer Reprise” until 2012.

    Bethel Woods Center for the Arts – located at the historic site of the 1969 Woodstock festival – has announced it’s summer 2015 music lineup. Boasting some of today’s hottest acts as well as some old school classics, there is plenty of music for all ages, all summer long.   • The Music Never Stopped GD50 Pre/Post shows announced

    An impressive group of musicians will play a group of pre- and post-party shows in Chicago billed as The Music Never Stopped to complement the Grateful Dead Fare the Well GD50 reunion run.

    The Music Never Stopped run kicks off Thursday, July 2, with shows at different venues by Thievery Corporation with special guests yet to be announced, Gene Ween with special guests Mariachi El Bronx, and a Rex Foundation benefit called High Steppin’ Into Town featuring Greensky Bluegrass, Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass and the Infamous Stringdusters.

    On Friday, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe will start at 10 p.m., and Edwarde Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros will perform at another venue from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.

    Saturday, the Fourth of July, Railroad Earth will start a show at 11 p.m., and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros will again play another venue with an 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. show.

    Sunday is the big culmination with the Fiyawrapper All Star Jam starting at 11 p.m. This group features Jennifer Hartswick of the Trey Anastasio Band as musical director and will include two other TAB musicians plus members of the Allman Brothers Band, Soulive/Lettuce, the Revivalists, Big Gigantic, Snarky Puppy and Break Science/Pretty Lights.
