  • Deadmau5 to Release, ‘5 Years of Mau5’

    Since 2008, Deadmau5, aka Joel Zimmerman, has made quite the mark on the music scene as well as the public eye. Known for his giant mouse head, progressive electronic dance music and frequent tendency to openly speak his mind – Zimmerman’s rise to the top has been impressive and entertaining, to say the least. Setting himself far apart from your average “DJ” Mau5 considers himself more of an entertainer, often throwing together amazing and mind-blowing mixes and tracks on stage with cutting edge, advanced computer technology.

    Zimmerman believes that the term “DJ” is played out and no longer truly encompasses what some of these individuals do on stage.  He has headlined major events world-wide such as Itunes Music Festival, Lollapalooza, Budweiser’s Made in America, Virgin Mobile Free Fest and many more.  In Summer 2012, Deadmau5 became the first Electronic “DJ” to be given the honor of front page of the Rolling Stone.

    Deadmau5 has announced that this winter, just in time for the holiday season, he will be releasing a double album set with all of his older material from his first two albums, as well as new remixes and songs and other artists on Zimmerman’s “Mau5Trap.”

    Deadmau5 will be playing his next major festival at the Hard Day of the Dead Festival in Southern California on November 1.   • Jack White Announces show at World’s Famous Arena, MSG

    Jack White has announced a headline concert on January 30 at Madison Square Garden. This will be the first time White has played the venue since 2007 with his band The White Stripes. Jack White is touring behind is latest release Lazaretto, which came out earlier this year to rave reviews from around the country. Throughout this past summer he has headlined many festivals, including Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, and Osheaga, as well as his own shows around the world.

    White has also announced that this past summer’s show from Bonnaroo will be released in a deluxe package from Third Man Records as the latest in from their “Vault Package” series. Included is the entire performance, that stretched an extra 45 minutes past its scheduled end, on a 3 LP vinyl set, a DVD of the performance, a poster, 4 pictures, and a custom television usb stick. The performance was streamed live as hit happened and right away was hailed as one of the greatest performances in Bonnaroo history. White always has a knack for giving it all to an audience that gives it right back to him. If an audience isn’t to his liking though he has cut the show short on occasions, including a show at Radio City Music Hall in 2012 after about an hour.

    At every show this summer he has not only covered his solo catalog, but also tackled songs from his other bands The White Stripes, The Dead Weather, and The Raconteurs. His backing band is tremendous and they go into each show without a set list so the show can be produced on the fly. Although White has admitted that certain songs will be performed at each show, he has said there is no plan on stage. Be prepared to be wowed by White and his band this January. Tickets will be going on a pre-sale tomorrow at 10AM for Vault members, followed by a another pre-sale Thursday at 10AM for venue and Chase and Amex cardholders. Finally the public on-sale will be Friday October 10 at noon.

  • Bassnectar Returns To Rochester with Son of Kick and Kill Paris for ‘Noise VS Beauty Tour’

    Attention Upstate Bassheads: this is the show. Legendary DJ Lorin Ashton AKA Bassnectar will again take over Rochester this Friday, October 3, as part of his “NVSB 2014 Tour” performing alongside notable acts Son of Kick, hailing from London and Kill Paris of Los Angeles. Known for his ultra dense sound, aggressive drops and super-technical beats, Bassnectar puts on a show like no other, with tastefully psychedelic projection visuals and a host of lights. Bassnectar’s most recent album, Noise VS Beauty, was released late June and features some of Ashton’s most intelligent compositions yet, staying  true to its name by carefully marrying filth with elegance.

    Supporting act, Son of Kick, has achieved respect in the dubstep world in his own right, mainly in Europe so far, with a balanced, somewhat hip-hop influenced sound. Kill Paris will also throw down a funk-driven set, sure to feature big bass and atmospheric textures. All three acts bring different styles to the table with two distinct binding factors: dancing, and BASS.

    Doors are at 6PM and Son of Kick should open the show around 7PM. Due to Main Street Armory’s curfew, the evening will likely be wrapped up by midnight. And remember: this will be a hot one with lots of energy, moving bodies and flashing lights; be sure to eat a solid meal and hydrate properly throughout the show.

  • Nas Kicking off Illmatic Tour With Back to Back New York Shows

    Nas has been at the top of the rap world since he debuted 20 years ago and will be celebrating the anniversary with the Illmatic tour for his landmark first LP Illmatic. The Illmatic tour has a little extra punch to it due to the fact that not only will Nas be playing the album front to back, but he will also be showing his brand new documentary “Nas: Time is Illmatic.” The film follows the trajectory of the album from when it was being recorded all the way up to today. The influence that the album had on the rap genre is undeniable, and to be able to see it right before hearing the man play the legendary album is a once-in-a-lifetime event.

    Nas, including Illmatic, has released eight platinum and multi-platinum albums throughout his career and has played all over the world. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Nas eventually moved to Queens with his family at a young age and soon became interested in hip hop and the growing community surrounding it. Illmatic was a fan favorite from the moment it was released, earning high praise from the hip hop community. Not only did he rap about problems in everyday life, but he also rapped about the hope for a better one. These two shows are the only ones anywhere in New York.

    This film, which premiers at the Tribeca Film Festival on Oct. 1, means a lot to him. Nas has said, “I want to thank Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and the Tribeca Film family for all of the love & support they’ve given Time Is Illmatic. It is an honor to be in partnership with them, and I feel there is a cultural kinship bonded by the city of New York.” The film unfortunately won’t be shown on the tour’s opening night at Main Street Armory in Rochester on Oct. 2, but it will be shown the following evening, Oct. 3, at Albany’s Palace Theatre. Tickets are still available for both nights, $40 for Rochester and up to $70 for Albany, so don’t sleep on your chance to see these special shows from easily one of the best rappers out there today.

  • Andy Suzuki and The Method to tour with Marc Broussard

    Folk and Blues band Andy Suzuki & The Method will be hitting the road with Marc Broussard for a three-week tour. “Marc Broussard has been an idol of mine for years, so traveling with him in his tour bus is going to be a dream comes true. We are gonna have a mobile slumber party on the highway” Suzuki said, on his website. The first half of  the tour will only feature Suzuki playing a solo set and the full band will play starting on Oct. 8 at the Highline Ballroom in NYC. Tour kicks off in Columbia, S.C. and ends in Chester, N.Y.

  • Cat Stevens Announces First U.S Tour Since 1976

    197553-a2ce9Update 9/25: Yusuf has cancelled his show in NYC at The Beacon Theatre to protest New York’s scalping laws, per CBS. A statement from Yusuf reads:

    Unfortunately I will not be performing in NYC this time around but I am looking forward to playing for fans in Philadelphia on December 4 and hope to return to NYC at a future date. My fans will understand and I thank them for informing me about the extortionate tickets prices already being listed on some websites. I have been a longtime supporter of paperless tickets to my shows worldwide and avoiding scalpers. Unfortunately NY has a state law that requires all tickets sold for shows in NYC to be paper, enabling them to be bought and sold at inflated prices. I’m sorry about not being able to now play in NYC but hope to find an opportunity that aligns with my support of this issue in the near future, God willing. Looks like the Peace Train is going to arrive at New York a little bit later than expected. – Yusuf

    Yusuf will be playing in Boston on December 7th at the Wang Theatre.

    “Peace Train” singer and newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, Yusuf Islam, better known as Cat Stevens, announced a six-city concert tour in North America this December. This will be his first set of tour dates since 1976.

    Islam will be releasing a blues album called Tell ‘Em I’m Gone, on Oct. 27 produced by Rick Rubin. The last album that Islam released as Cat Stevens was his 1978 album, Back To Earth.

    The “Peace Train..Late Again” tour starting on Dec. 1 in Toronto then continues through to Boston, New York, Chicago, San Francisco and ends in Los Angeles. Tickets for the New York show go on sale September 24 at 10 am.

  • EDM Stars Skrillex & Diplo to Perform at Madison Square Garden on NYE

    Phish has played for the last four years at Madison Square Garden in New York City for a New Year’s Eve show. But this year, EDM legends Skrillex and Diplo will be taking the stage this time around, both doing their own sets.

  • Black Label Society, Hatebreed and Butcher Babies Announce Tour, Includes Syracuse Stop

    This past Tuesday Sept. 16, E One Records announced a winter tour featuring Black Label Society, Hatebreed, and Butcher Babies. Including a stop in Syracuse, N.Y. Saturday, Jan. 10 at the F Shed At The Regional Market.

    Black Label Society is currently touring in support of their latest album Catacombs of the Black Vatican. This tour will mark the first time since 2006 that the band has played in Syracuse. Hatebreed, unleashed their latest album The Divinity of Purpose last year and came to Syracuse in February of 2013. Butcher Babies, who toured with Black Label Society earlier this spring, will be releasing a covers EP entitled Uncovered, on Sept. 30.

  • Johnny Marr Bringing ‘Playland’ to Upstate New York and Beyond

    Johnny Marr, known best for being a founding member of The Smiths, is about to release his second solo album Playland on Oct. 6 and is supporting the release with a nationwide tour.

    Most notable for Upstate New York is the Tuesday Nov. 18 show at Upstate Concert Hall. Tickets are going to go on sale on Saturday Sept. 13 at 10AM and are only going to run you $20. This show is part of WEQX‘s 30th anniversary celebrations being the voice of independent music in the Capitol Region.

    The only other Johnny Marr in New York shows will take place on November 12th at The Gramercy Theatre in New York City and Nov.15 at The Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Other shows in the area include Nov. 14 at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ and Nov. 16 at The Paradise in Boston, MA. Tickets for these shows will be going on sale Friday Sept. 12. Johnny is a tremendous guitarist and song-writer and all of these venues are a great way to see a talent such as his in such intimate venues. The first single from the album, “Easy Money” can be seen below.
