    Cassadee Pope
    Cassadee Pope

Country newcomer, Cassadee Pope, will make two stops in New York state at the end of the summer.

The 24-year-old singer and songwriter was in the area earlier this spring as part of WGNA’s Secret Star Acoustic Jam at Proctor’s Theater in Schenectady.

Pope’s biggest claim to fame so far in her young career is that she won the third season of the singing competition show “The Voice,” as part of Blake Shelton’s team. She became the first woman to win the competition.

As part of last year’s Live and Loud tour with Rascal Flatts and The Band Perry, Cassadee’s fame started to really stand out while she opened for the tour with some amazing performances last summer.

Her debut solo album Frame By Frame, was released in the fall of 2013. Pope is also the vocalist for the pop punk band, Hey Monday, who are currently on hiatus.

Cassadee’s single “Wasting All These Tears,” is certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Pope has also won a CMT Music Award for Breakthrough Video of  the Year for “Wasting All These Tears.”

First stop in New York will be Thursday September 11 at the Irving Plaza in New York City. Show starts at 7pm. Tickets are $25. More information can be found online through Live Nation. Opening the show will be Joel Crouse.

WGNA will sponsor the show on Sunday September 14 at Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park. Doors open at 7pm and show starts at 8pm. Advanced tickets are $17.50 and $20 day of show. You can purchase tickets at all Ticketmaster locations, the club box office 371-0012 and Northern Lights Smoke Shop. Special Guest still TBA.

  • Port Chester Bids Farewell to Black 47 at Garcia’s

Garcia’s, with its bar stretching a decent portion of one side of the venue, was filled with a typical evening pub crowd relaxing and loosening up a bit. The stage was set for the entertainment of the night – a house band perhaps? Well, that’s what it felt like as the folks were hanging out until Irish rockers Black 47 took the stage there on July 31. Though, there was a special anticipation in the air as Black 47 winds down its career later this year while the music is still ripe and fresh, with just a few dozen more shows to go.

    Black47d

For having an incredible 25-year career with around 2,000 live shows, many albums, and international notoriety and respect in the genre, Black 47 maintained that pub band atmosphere throughout the evening. People who have followed the band for years know that they are nothing close to being sell-outs or ones to set themselves apart from the crowd, and those who might be seeing the band for the first time could quickly sense their authenticity and genuine nature. Singer/guitarist Larry Kirwin very enthusiastically helped set that tone as he openly encouraged bootlegging and photography of the show before they kicked the show off with “Green Suede Shoes”. Black 47 has strong ties with themes of Irish Republicanism, which resonated with the crowd – Kirwan told a brief story behind “Johnny Comes A’Courtin” with a mention of Oliver Cromwell, an English military leader who invaded Ireland in the 17th century. Some thumbs down and boos were seen and heard at this mention; a stab at the negative point in history and not the band. The political themes heard throughout the evening seemed to bring everyone together on a sort of common ground.

    Black47c

Known for their blend of rock, reggae, punk, and jazz  with traditional Irish sounds and folk themes, Black 47’s set was complete with a spectrum of song styles. It included both dance tunes and songs that rang out like anthems, such as “The Night The Showbands Died” where many raised their hands in the air along with the band. Closing the evening was a one-song encore. “This is how we do Dylan!,”Kirwan exclaimed as they performed a worthy cover of “Like A Rolling Stone”. The crowd was left chanting again for one more song, though for a weeknight things had to wrap up before it got too late. [embedyt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Rqt6NcoTfM[/embedyt]   [embedyt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1hi0_JuzeI[/embedyt] If you are debating whether or not to catch Black 47 one last time or have been meaning to catch them for the first time and haven’t yet, what are you waiting for? This is the last call, so be sure to check them out and give them a fond farewell at one (or more!) of their upcoming shows in the region: Hooley On The Hudson in Kingston August 31, The 2014 Irish Festival in Ballston Spa September 13, Hudson Valley Irish Festival in Peekskill September 20, and Connolly’s Pub and Restaurant in Manhattan September 27.  Their final show is November 15 at B.B. King Blues Club in NYC. Check out their full schedule here.

  • Municipal Waste and Madball Set to Play Bogie’s

Thrash metal outfit Municipal Waste and New York City veteran hardcore group Madball are playing Bogies in Albany tonight in attempt to make a decent draw to potentially save the business, or at least, keep the steady stream of heavy shows coming to the venue.

Upstate Black N Blue, owned by Mike Valente, released the following statement yesterday on their Facebook page.

“Here’s the deal. If you care about hardcore and metal, come out tomorrow night (Thursday) to Bogies for MADBALL AND MUNICIPAL WASTE. This is a big tour. It shouldn’t draw less than 400 people in any city. But if we get less than 200 people tomorrow it shows a steady downward trend in attendance and bogies will have to make a decision about whether we can continue to taking a beating and lose money trying to stay open and provide a home to countless bands and people for underground music. So if you want. Bogies to stay open and you like hardcore and metal you better be there on Thursday (Aug 7)”

Municipal Waste’s latest release The Fatal Feast was released back in 2012 and has been steadily touring in support of that album ever since. Madball’s latest release Hardcore Lives was released just last month.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are only $18 at the door. Honestly, this show should be insane. Metal and hardcore fans need to get off their couches for this show and not only support two phenomenal bands, but help save a venue that has done so much for heavy music in the Capital Region.

  • Randall’s Island gets Rocked from Phish and Phans

Phish and their dedicated followers are no strangers to New York City, seeing that they visit during the bitter cold New Year’s Eve runs each year. But the holidays came early for fans as they enjoyed the three-night run of beautiful weather, famous skyline and jam-packed Phish set lists on Randall’s Island, located between Harlem, Queens and the South Bronx. With a capacity of 35,000, Randall’s Island was a comfortable and familiar fit for fans that long for the Phish festival experience, but were happy to spread out on the lawn or rage by the stage.

There was a strict curfew each night of 11pm, causing the shows to actually start on time around 7, and with gates opening at 4, there were more than enough activities to keep fans entertained. Ben & Jerry’s handed out free Phish food ice cream and Hippieshop.com sold raffle tickets for a Fuego themed bicycle. One of the biggest attractions were the Official Phish Freezer and Water Wheel Foundation tents, offering vintage merchandise, Pollock posters, DVDs, and vinyls such as the new exclusive release of Picture of Nectar.

Thousands of phans travelled by ferry, car, subway, bus or walked the almost 2 mile hike over the East River to partake in the unique experience of Phish. The start of the three night run on Friday night brought a funky “Moma Dance” opener as the first “Ya Mar” of the season had the classic Page McConnell solo plus a stand out bass solo from Mike Gordon. The first set had possibly one of the best “Bathtub Gin” versions of the summer, clocking in at a solid 18 minutes. The Gin started in the traditional sense of phans singing along with the lyrics before the band dove into a fast paced melody of pure exploratory bliss.

The second set was a continuous flow of surprise and delight as they started with a dark and rare “Steam” with a slow build up that got pretty weird before the stand out “Down with Disease” that featured high energetic guitar riffs from Trey Anastasio. The soft and gentle melody morphed into a “Golden Age”, followed by a mellow “Limb by Limb”. The ever popular new hit “Fuego” made an appearance and set fire to the “David Bowie” that followed with triumph.

The show ended with a simple, yet groovy “Character Zero” as the first impressions of the night were grand, making everyone eager to return for two more nights of Phish. Randall’s Island has proved to be high on the list of venues and stand out jams for the summer tour this year.

    Friday July 11th Setlist

Set 1: The Moma Dance, Kill Devil Falls > Ya Mar, Bathtub Gin, 555 > Rift > Sample in a Jar > The Wedge, Waiting all Night, Stash

Set 2: Steam> Down with Disease [1] -> Golden Age > Limb by Limb > Fuego > David Bowie, Cavern Encore: Character Zero

    [1] Unfinished.

Notes: Trey teased the Munsters theme in Stash. DWD was unfinished.

  • Phish Phans Getting Randy for Randall’s Island in NYC July 11-13

Phish fans will once again flock to the greatest city in the world for a three night consecutive run on New York City’s Randall’s Island. The recreational oasis set in the middle of the concrete jungle will host the jam band carnival on July 11 – 13, with three-day and single day tickets still available here.

Randall’s has hosted major events before such as Lollapalooza, Vans Warped Tour and the Electric Zoo, but local residents are in for a treat as thousands of dedicated followers are currently en route to share in the groove. Those heading to the event should be aware that gates will open each day at 4pm and a show time of 7 pm with a strict curfew of 11pm. Since Randall’s is located in the East River, between East Harlem, the South Bronx and Astoria, Queens, one of the easiest ways to get to the venue is by Ferry. Passes are available in short supply with carpooling being strongly encouraged and only available with a parking on-site pass.

There are great rewards to those who arrive early for the first ever run of Phish shows at Randall’s. The forecast is set to be partly cloudy in the 80s all weekend making for a great excuse to check out The Freezer. The official Phish Archive merch store will feature original shirts, hard goods, and many more rare items such as classic Jim Pollock posters. Besides the hot merchandise, things will heat up with The Freezer hosting the JEMP Records Store and their exclusive release of the band’s third full-length studio album, A Picture Of Nectar on vinyl. The WaterWheel Foundation will have their own tent with a collection of autographed limited edition posters for phans to admire plus the Hippieshop.com will give fans a chance to win a “Fuego” themed bicycle.

  • Albany County DA Serves Pete Nice The ‘Gas Face’ Over Taxes

Apparently Peter Nash’s status as rap’s “Prime Minister Pete Nice” does not exempt him from paying New York state taxes.

The Albany Times Union reported that the Clifton Park resident and retired rapper pled guilty to misdemeanor criminal tax fraud in Albany County Court Tuesday, July 1.

Nash did not attempt to use his rap moniker to avoid taxes, but the Albany Count District Attorney’s Office said he must pay the Empire State $13,101 in back taxes, penalties and interest. He will also be on probation for three years, the district attorney’s office said. He will be sentenced on Aug. 26.

As Master of Ceremonies for the group 3rd Bass, Nash released three albums between 1989 and 1991, two of which went gold. “Pop Goes the Weasel!” a track directed towards Vanilla Ice’s unwelcome a popularity in rap circles, reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard rap charts. 20140702-065339-24819854.jpg

Nash subsequently quit the music business and devoted his time to baseball history and memorabilia.

According to several published sources, Nash owned a memorabilia shop in Cooperstown, and authored a book titled Legends of Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery.

His baseball endeavors also include attempts to secure property for an official grave site of Negro League players.

Nash was involved in litigation in 2009 with an auction house relating to the authenticity of baseball memorabilia he consigned for sale which resulted in him signing a court order admitting to having committed fraud.

Robert Van Winkle was not approached for comment.
