  • The Architecture of Sound, Part 1

The venues we see music are more than just a place to congregate to experience concerts and performances. The work that goes into architecture – the designing, creating and building these venues is a lengthy process that spans years, well before patrons take their seats or find dance space to enjoy the sound. Architects, engineers and consultants contribute to the development of the overall sound, acoustics and open space that factor into the finished product – a music venue with, in more and more instances, incredible acoustics and sound.

To shed some light on the architecture side of designing music venues, spoke with Matthew Geiss, AIA, NCARB, Principal and an Adjunct Professor at The Catholic University of America’s School of Architecture and Planning. A graduate of the School of Architecture at Syracuse University, Geiss spoke with Pete Mason to discuss the ‘how’ of music venues and acoustics as the latter grows in importance throughout the design and construction process.

Pete Mason: When the design process for a music venue begins, what factors are brought into play initially for the rest of the design to build around?

Matthew Geiss: It depends on the type of venue and primarily whether or not it will be new construction or a renovation of an existing space. Many large music venues need to be multifaceted (can be used for multiple types of events). Typically, the larger the number of functions a building is designed to accommodate, the less it can actually perform for each individual function. In other words, if a building is designed to accommodate live bands, theatre, orchestral performances, etc…- due to the different requirements for each function – choices need to be made to maximize the benefit of each without creating a negative impact to any of the other functions.

If it is new construction, the primary factors are the site – how large will the building be, how will people enter and exit, what other buildings surround the building site, etc… – and the function – how will the building be used, how often will it be used, how many people are to be accommodated, etc…

    Kennedy Center, Washington D.C.

PM: How are acoustics and the flow of music built into the design in a way that does not affect the overall structure of the building? How can acoustics be worked into a building without making the overall structure unappealing, or worse, unsafe?

MG: With most performance spaces, acoustical design is something which is inserted into the building to capitalize on the performance. In most cases (such as the Alice Tully Hall renovation at Lincoln Center by Diller Scofidio and Renfro) the acoustical elements of the interior are slid into the shell or structure of the space like a sleeve. Structural requirements will generally interfere with acoustical requirements of the space so the two are generally separated. Typically the building will have a structure, with a skin on the outside (enclosure) and a skin on the inside (the acoustical, aesthetic or finished space). Of course, these are generalizations. Many Gothic and Romanesque churches, domed spaces (such as the baptistery in Pisa) have incredible acoustical properties where the structure, enclosure and finished space are one and the same.

PM: How long does the process for designing, drafting and building a music venue take, in years?

MG: This is a difficult one to generalize as it will have a huge range depending on the building type, finishes, site conditions, etc… A small interior retrofit or renovation may happen within the span of a year or two (from initial design to completion of construction), where a large performance space will likely take in excess of 5 years from initial design to the completion of the structure.

PM: When it comes to the process of designing a music venue, what would surprise music fans the most?

MG: I would say that the most surprising element might be the large number of people involved in the design and the collaborative process which is required. When I was working at STUDIOS Architecture here in Washington, DC, we designed the performance studio at XM Radio Headquarters here in town. We had a team of over 20 people (acoustical consultants, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, structural engineers, and architects) working on the design of only two rooms.

PM: Considering the great many music venues in America – what are some of the best venues for sound and acoustics, that you have come across in your experience?

MG: The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, NY; 9:30 Club, Washington, DC.

  • Pink Talking Fish Spin Dark Side of the Moon on its Head

I could sit here and type a review of Pink Talking Fish who took Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon this past Saturday, October 18 at The Cutting Room in New York City and played it straight through while weaving Phish songs and Talking Heads song into the mix. I could tell about the smart pairings of “Life During Wartime” followed by “Time” and  “The Great Gig in the Divided Sky”, where the “Great Gig” was sandwiched inside “The Divided Sky”. Or I could express how flawlessly the show sounded, far from rehearsed but fully in sync throughout the night, playing to an enthusiastic the crowd that danced harder with each segue in and out of selections from three historic bands.

  • Who is 50? Who is coming to NY?

    WHO50
    Photo via thewho.com

Legendary classic rock and hall of fame act The Who will be celebrating 50 years of music with an extensive 2 leg tour through most of 2015. Windmilling guitarist Pete Townsend apparently has big plans for the tour: “Trying to stay young. Not wearing socks. Growing a great big woodcutter’s beard. Might even wear a check shirt on stage and get a tattoo of a Union Jack. Always a fashion victim. But under no illusions. We are what we are, and extremely good at it, but we’re lucky to be alive and still touring.”

Will this be the last hurrah for the pinball wizards? According to Roger Daltry “This is the beginning of the long goodbye.” While that certainly leaves the true retirement date way up in the air, it’s probably advisable to get to one of these shows before the end is nigh. New Yorkers will have four chances to do so with dates in Uniondale (May 20) Brooklyn (May 26) Forest Hills (May 30) and a fall date at party central – Madison Square Garden (Oct 27). Tickets for leg one shows go on sale to the general public Oct 17th. Pre-sales are available via the bands fan club Oct 11, if you’re not currently a member you can sign up here.

  • Gov’t Mule Announces New Years Eve run and Vault Releases

Gov’t Mule will spend their New Years run in New York City at The Beacon Theater on Dec. 30 and 31 and swing down to Philadelphia for two more shows on Jan. 2 and 3 at The Tower Theater. On New Year’s Eve, Mule will be joined by Myles Kennedy for a potential night of AC/DC covers, given the artwork below and Kennedy’s vocal potential.

On Jan. 2, Cabinet and Ron Holloway will join Mule, and sax legend Bill Evans will join the band on Jan. 3. Tickets are on sale for the Beacon shows Friday, Oct. 10 at 12 noon, while Tower Theater tickets are on sale Friday, Oct. 17.

In addition to their four-night New Year’s run, Mule will also be releasing four vault releases:

Stoned Side of the Mule: Volume 1 releases exclusively on vinyl on Black Friday, Nov. 28 and features seven Rolling Stone covers from Halloween 2009 at The Tower Theater.

Dark Side of the Mule, will release on Dec. 9, including 90 minutes of live Pink Floyd covers. Recorded on Halloween 2008 at The Orpheum in Boston, this release will be available as an album, an album/DVD package or double vinyl.

Dub Side of the Mule, to be released in early 2015, will feature reggae songs with reggae legend Toots Hibbert of Toots & The Maytals from Mule’s New Year’s Eve 2006 show at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.  This release will be available as an album, an album/DVD package or double vinyl and features special guests Gregg Allman & Friends and John Popper.

SCO-MULE, a long-awaited release that celebrates John Scofield’s teaming with Gov’t Mule as the band enters their 20th year. Details from the press release spell out the great potential for this live release:

In late September of 1999, John Scofield teamed with Gov’t Mule, then featuring original bass player the late Allen Woody, along with keyboardist Dr. Dan Matrazzo, in Georgia for two legendary shows of mind-bending live prowess. Both shows were recorded and included the Mule’s first-ever all-instrumental sets. The band had begun preparing the music for eventual release while working on their third studio album Life Before Insanity. However, less than a year later, their beloved bassist Allen Woody passed away, setting the Mule on a different path. The idea of releasing SCO- MULE came up over the years, but the timing was never as right as it is now – helping to mark Gov’t Mule’s 20th Anniversary. While Scofield and the Mule did reunite briefly for a set at Warren Haynes’ 25th Annual Christmas Jam in December 2013, fans have been clamoring for the return of the project ever since those lauded 1999 shows, and for more than a decade the Mule have been eager to share the music from these shows through an LP. Now for the first time, fans can experience the SCO-MULE magic first-hand in album form, newly mixed and mastered. The 3-hour all-instrumental album is a jazz romp laced with rock riffs and will be available as a 2-CD set as well as a double vinyl.

  • Jack White Announces show at World’s Famous Arena, MSG

Jack White has announced a headline concert on January 30 at Madison Square Garden. This will be the first time White has played the venue since 2007 with his band The White Stripes. Jack White is touring behind is latest release Lazaretto, which came out earlier this year to rave reviews from around the country. Throughout this past summer he has headlined many festivals, including Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, and Osheaga, as well as his own shows around the world.

White has also announced that this past summer’s show from Bonnaroo will be released in a deluxe package from Third Man Records as the latest in from their “Vault Package” series. Included is the entire performance, that stretched an extra 45 minutes past its scheduled end, on a 3 LP vinyl set, a DVD of the performance, a poster, 4 pictures, and a custom television usb stick. The performance was streamed live as hit happened and right away was hailed as one of the greatest performances in Bonnaroo history. White always has a knack for giving it all to an audience that gives it right back to him. If an audience isn’t to his liking though he has cut the show short on occasions, including a show at Radio City Music Hall in 2012 after about an hour.

At every show this summer he has not only covered his solo catalog, but also tackled songs from his other bands The White Stripes, The Dead Weather, and The Raconteurs. His backing band is tremendous and they go into each show without a set list so the show can be produced on the fly. Although White has admitted that certain songs will be performed at each show, he has said there is no plan on stage. Be prepared to be wowed by White and his band this January. Tickets will be going on a pre-sale tomorrow at 10AM for Vault members, followed by a another pre-sale Thursday at 10AM for venue and Chase and Amex cardholders. Finally the public on-sale will be Friday October 10 at noon.

  • The End Men get the tour send off they need from The Low Beat in Albany

For a thursday night in Albany, New York, there sure was a good amount of rock and roll to be had. On Central Avenue in particular, where four small bands from New York state converged to bring a huge night of music. The End Men, from Brooklyn, kicked off their tour at their second home in Albany, before hitting the road for two solid weeks up and down the east coast.

The Low Beat has been bringing quality shows since it opened in February of this year. In the wake of Valentines closing, a staple venue in the Albany music scene, The Low Beat has filled that void, with the same ‘No Pepper’ adorning the stage and great beers and grub from the bar. (Check out our article on the iconic club closing it’s doors.)

     Jim Gilbert-Henry's Rifle-03

Henry’s Rifle kicked off the night, with his one man talent barrage. John Pipino normally goes at it alone, with his trusty banjo and tambourine/stompbox suitcase combo bringing down and dirty roots rock to the stage. He was in good form, telling the crowd he was digging into some songs he normally doesn’t like to play, but was enjoying them anyway. A master at creating a singular atmosphere when he plays, it’s no wonder his new album (which will be released on Halloween of this year) is called “Barroom Weather”. With his huge, crooning voice sailing over the crowd, and his fast paced banjo strumming and later guitar picking, the show was given a proper send up from an act that needs to be experienced to be believed. Look for news on his CD release soon.

     Jim Gilbert-Charmboy-02

Next up was Charmboy, also from Albany. Both Henry’s Rifle and Charmboy are part of the ever growing Built4BBQ musician collective in Albany, which also includes The End Men as well. The traditional three piece of guitar, bass and drums is anything but, delivering high energy old school rock and roll in large helpings. They started their set with a massive psychedelic build up, which was kind of surprising considering the immediate rock set that followed. Easy parallels can be made to Elvis Costello and Television, but these guys bring some new vigor to that tried and true sound. Great sound from the board helped the crowd pick out the nuances like precision shuffle beat drums over screaming guitars, and a three part vocal attack. No nonsense rock and roll, as showcased by their originals and a great cover of “Heaven and Hell” by The Who.

    Jim Gilbert-The End Men-05

The End Men played the third spot on the bill, and the bar was almost packed full at this point. When these guys come to town, the crowds continually get bigger and bigger, and soon we might not be seeing this band in the smaller clubs in the area. The awesome power of the sound this band produces is even more incredible when you realize they are, inherently, a two piece band. Matt Hendershot holds down a gritty blues rock guitar with searing, gravel dream vocals, while Livia Ranalli plays the meanest drums and percussion you have ever seen. Filling out the lineup for this tour is Matt Elia on tenor saxaphone, which brings an added warmth to the gritty rock and roll coming from the stage. At first listen, visions of Tom Waits, Jack White or Mark Lanegan might fill your mind, but The End Men deliver all that and more with their incredible vaudevillian, psycho circus rock and roll. Matt is engaging as frontman to this rag tag outfit, and definitely seems at home in front of a microphone. The vocal melodies between Matt and Liv resonate to your very depths, and draw you closer to the stage to sop up every last bit of musical juice they provide. This is what bands on the cusp of breaking into the big time look and feel like, so next time they come to this area, or an area near you, do not miss the chance to witness their raucous good time. They ended their set with a song called “The Wolves”, having epic trade offs between guitar and sax with the percussion keeping everything nailed to the floor.

     Jim Gilbert-Sun Voyager-01

Last of the night was Sun Voyager from NYC, and they put the perfect capstone on an already incredible rock show. Psychedelic with a hint of crazy riff rock, it was a little like watching the british invasion all over again. If you happened to walk into The Low Beat not knowing what you were in for, Sun Voyager would have convinced you that you were witnessing something prolific. Hints of The Black Angels and The 13th Floor Elevators permeate their sound, and their big sound washes over you with reckless abandon, showing the versatile sound that this club can handle. Another three piece band that blows you away with their talent and musicianship.

A final note: Touring is a tough business, and that statement hit harder than most for The End Men that night. Their tour vehicle lost it’s transmission two blocks from The Low Beat, right before the show. But because of Albany’s incredible music scene that boasts a true sense of comradery, this little band from Brooklyn was in good hands. The bartender got a mechanic on the phone immediately, friends and bandmates helped push their vehicle to the club. Our own Jim Gilbert offered up his van so that they could continue on their tour. Music isn’t just about the sounds that you create, it’s about the friendships and connections you make as well. No better place to experience that first hand then supporting your local music scene, and becoming part of that awesome collective yourself.
