  • Syracuse, Prepare for Total Heart and Soul Meltdown with Lake Street Dive

If you haven’t listened to Lake Street Dive’s cover of the Jackson 5 single, “I Want You Back,” then you should. After hearing it, if you aren’t swooning, crooning, or feeling the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, you might want to check your pulse; chances are you are dead. This single performance around a single mic on a Brighton, Massachusetts street corner brought nearly instant and well-deserved attention (now almost two million views) to this tremendously talented Boston-based group. They have since performed on the Colbert Report, The Late Show with David Letterman, the Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Town Hall (NYC). This rising star of a band brings its captivating soul/Motown/jazz/pop sound to Syracuse’s Westcott Theater on Thursday, June 26th at 8PM.

Lake Street Dive is a four-piece, formed by fellow students who met over a decade ago at the New England Conservatory in Boston. The band was hand-picked and named by trumpet/guitar player Mike Olson, who found inspiration in a neighborhood of seedy bars in his hometown of Minneapolis. All members of the band assist in writing songs, singing, and are phenomenal musicians in their own right, but the reality is, Lake Street Dive is fronted by a goddess. Rachel Price, a Nashville native, commands a silky, yet full and powerful, soul-rattling voice that will make you melt. Her vocal technique is impeccable, her dynamic works seamlessly with her backup vocals, and her look…well, just Google her, you’ll see what I mean.

Lake Street Dive’s tour follows the release of their sixth album, Bad Self Portraits, and is sure to draw a good crowd to the Westcott Theater on Thursday, June 26th. Come support the little dive bar band that is making waves worldwide, and keeping soul alive and relevant in modern music.

  • Kick Off Your Summer With Rusted Root, Big Leg Emma, and Soco Mojo in Oneonta

Summer is officially here, so why not get it started on the right foot with the rootsy world rock music of Rusted Root, who are making a trip out to Oneonta on Friday night, June 27! They will be performing at the historic Oneonta Theatre, which is the perfect venue for a band of Rusted Root’s caliber, as it will be sure to attract both the college crowd (for those students who are sticking around this summer) and fans who went to see the band when they first hit the scene back in the ‘90s. This show starts at 8PM, with doors opening at 7. Be sure to visit the bar in the lobby of the Oneonta Theatre before the show and between bands; a nice selection of local beers are always on tap.

Rusted Root, a band with its roots firmly set in their hometown of Pittsburgh, is a collaboration of members who have always been drawn to and experimented with every form of music, covering regions as far-reaching as India, the Middle East, and Africa. Going to one of their concerts is truly like going on a journey through all these exotic places, as they take you there with their music. Rusted Root’s most recent album The Movement (2012), as described by the band’s vocalist and percussionist Liz Berlin, is a real testament to their community of fans, as the album was created as a result of a funds contributed by fans. In addition to Berlin, the band’s current line-up includes Michael Glabicki on lead guitar/vocals, Patrick Norman on vocals/bass/guitar/percussion, Dirk Miller on guitar, and Preach Freedom on percussion. It will be interesting to hear tunes off their new album, but it is likely that they will also be performing some of their classics, such as “Send Me On My Way” and “Ecstasy”, which are always a blast to hear and experience live.

Rusted Root will be joined by two very special guests to open up their June 27 performance. First off, Soco Mojo, a true hometown band based out of right here in Oneonta, will be joined by another local legend, the spectacularly talented vocalist and guitarist John Scarpulla. A funky blues rock band, featuring the swirly reverberations of a Hammond and sharp jazzy sounds of a flute, Soco Mojo is sure to get everyone moving and psyched up for the rest of the evening.

The second band of the night will be none other than the runners up in ’s 2014 March Madness contest, Big Leg Emma! Based out of Jamestown in Western NY, Big Leg Emma have really come onto the jamband scene strong in the last couple of years, and if they keep up the good work, they are sure to continue growing and moving in the right direction. With a heavy base of real Americana music, throwing in some bluegrass, folk, and country for good measure, the jam component definitely comes out during their live performances, when their more dancy psychedelic side truly emerges.

If you live closer to the Albany area and can’t make it to Rusted Root’s show in Oneonta, they will be performing the following night, on June 28, at the Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park. Be sure to visit www.rustedroot.com for additional tour dates.

He went on, “This is such a good, loving family festival. It bloomed from my friends Taco and Elise’s wedding anniversary into this big party. Their love for music and art shines.”

Even better, the fun can be shared with your best four-legged friend as long as she or he is friendly and leashed. Chafin advises, “This is one festival you don’t want to miss!”

  • Buffalove is in the Air: The Festival Returns for its Second Year

    2014 Buffalove pin
    2014 Buffalove pin

This time last year, an ambitious Buffalo native was putting the final touches on the vision he had of throwing his own music festival. Of course, only local bands would be on the bill as this was intended from the get-go to be a celebration of the Buffalo music scene and its surrounding regions. The gamble paid off and the community responded in a big way, coming out in droves to share in the enthusiasm for Western New York music. The person I’m speaking of is Cody Conway and his ambitious goal, that likely seemed far-fetched to a lot of people, came to fruition and Buffalove Music Festival was established as one of the premier festivals in the area, calling Willow Creek Winery in Silver Creek, NY its home.

This year marks the second year of the festival and the underdog status is no more. Throughout the region, music fans were waiting for the announcement of who they would be seeing on this year’s bill. Fast forward to the present and the start of the festival’s second year is upon us. Things kickoff Thursday (tomorrow) with the Intrepid Travelers starting things off at 6pm. The full lineup is pretty deep this year too, with over 20 bands on the bill. If you bought the full weekend pass, you can look forward to seeing acts like Jimkata, Aqueous, Funktional Flow, Mister F, smackdab, Lazlo Hollyfeld, Slip Madigan, Broccoli Samurai, and many more.

Beyond all of the music, there are new features and personal touches added this year for the enjoyment of all of the festival-goers. Things such as fireworks, a 9-hole frisbee golf course, an Open-Mic Stage, kids activities, and a quiet zone for family camping are some of the great additions that are available this year, building upon the foundation of last year’s successes.

Given the pride that the people and the band’s of Buffalo take in the Queen City being their hometown, last year’s festival alone saw some pretty unique moments as band’s pulled out their best material and all the stops for their sets. Last year’s bust out of the Pink Floyd cover “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” by Aqueous was noted as one of our Best Jams from 2013. It’s exciting to think what we’ll be treated to this year with so many returning acts looking to step up their game and really wow the crowd.

There won’t be a better place to spend this weekend than at Buffalove. Here’s the full lineup of band’s you will see, all linked, so that you can keep up on your favorites by checking out their respective websites:

If you’ve been dragging your feet and still need a ticket, click here to order yours now. With over 20 bands, 3 stages, free camping and parking, and all of the other activities and things to do, the $50 price tag really doesn’t seem like much for all that you get. Additionally, if you’d like to see the festival poster or understand the schedule for the weekend, check out the pictures below which should give you an idea of what is on tap for Buffalove’s much-anticipated second year.

  • Art Garfunkel Performs Song and Prose at the Paramount Hudson Valley, Saturday June 14

GarfunkelArt Garfunkel, legendary folk singer known for his part in Simon and Garfunkel, has recently taken back to the stage after three years of recovery from vocal cord weakness with a number of performances in the greater Northeast. This Saturday, he brings his performance to the Paramount Hudson Valley one night after a nearby show at the White Plains Performing Arts Center in White Plains.

Diagnosed with vocal paresis in 2010, Garfunkel felt a tragic loss with his inability to sing. In the time he spent off stage he took to other forms of expression in writing and poetry. In early 2013 he felt the need to return to singing, as a singer does. He has overcome the tragedy (as he calls it) by learning how to sing differently, in a lower register.

Now over a year after his return to the stage, Garfunkel has built a performance based on his songs and writings. On his tour he is joined by guitarist Tab Laven performing songs from his years with Simon and Garfunkel, his solo work as well as covers from some of his favorite songwriters. Aside from song, Garfunkel will also share thoughts from his writings and poetry.

Be a part of “An intimate Evening with Art Garfunkel,” an acoustic performance with songs, anecdotes and prose at the historic Paramount Hudson Valley in Peekskill this Saturday.  Tickets for this performance are available here.

For a full listing of Art Garfunkel’s performances, visit his website here. He is scheduled for  five additional Northeast stops in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Queens before moving on to England for five performances in September.

  • Lucky Jukebox Brigade to Party on the Waterhole Patio

Lucky Jukebox Brigade Waterhole The Lucky Jukebox Brigade plans to visit the Waterhole on Thursday, June 12, as part of the legendary Saranac Lake venue’s Party on the Patio free Thursday evening outdoor concert series. The band, a seven-piece from Albany, recently had a successful showing at this year’s Albany Tulip Fest.

The band formed in October 2010 from what the band calls a “hopeful Craigslist ad.” Featuring a variety of horns, plus a bass, ukelele and two percussionists, the band, which bills itself as an indie cabaret band, has an old-school sound that invokes carnivals at times, and at others, ’50s swing, and is reminiscent of bands like Beirut, the Dresden Dolls, Gogol Bordello and Modest Mouse.

The Lucky Jukebox Brigade is now promoting its sophomore album, Familiar Fevers ahead of their Waterhole performance.

The Waterhole, at 48 Main St. in Saranac Lake, has a full slate of Thursday night bands set to play on its outdoor patio every Thursday night from 6 to 10 p.m. to get your summer weekends started. For more information about the summer season, find the Waterhole on Facebook or go to saranaclakewaterhole.com.
