  • Hearing Aide: AFR “Psychopath of Rightousness”

Aaron Smith, of the Rochester-based, metal core band AFR, turns the drums into a concussion instrument. Throwing their latest EP, Psychopath of Rightousness, into my stereo only reminds me of how my high school music teacher had it so wrong to call them otherwise. Psychopathofrighteousnesscover

AFR dropped the EP late last month, their second in two years. It consists of six, heavy tracks that promise to beat the hell out of your ears once you’re done. In fact, the band’s bassist Todd Church received my email shortly after I was done listening, simply stated: “Wow!”

AFR is a five-piece band, featuring two guitarists and a bassist, that had started out back in the spring of 2012. Naturally, there has been a few line-up changes. Church was brought into the fold last year, and Aaron replaces Brandon Lewis behind the drum kit. Despite the short amount of time, the group is already signed to a label (Dead Trash Mob Records/Buffalo), and they’ve garnered a healthy respect from local fans for their abundance of showmanship, with or without the support from the crowd.

Psychopath comes at the heels of last year’s release, A Hero to Villians, which in itself was a polished display of talent. Edwin Hernandez and Zack Sweedler continue to supply some tight guitar riffs, and Church lays down the bassline. Alan Rohr’s lyrical presentation again lends the band its metal core characteristics. But, what seems to separate this newest release from the last is its focus on the percussion. There is a subtle shift to the bass and percussion that gives Psychopath a slightly, but noticeably, harder sound than their last EP.

Each track starts off quickly, with the exception of “DeFeo”. Amityville Horror fans will recognize the name and correctly associate the song title with that of the tragic events which ultimately inspired the book and subsequent movies. This track starts off with audio from a news broadcast reporting the details of the murders, scantly accompanied by guitar and cymbal, before tearing through their power chords. Otherwise, the boys like to rip it up right at the start.  Perhaps the best example of this would be “Bring on the Destructor”.

Destructor is a favorite. It sets the tone for the rest of the EP.  The report from Smith’s drums is what resonates with me after putting the headset down. Those familiar with AFR’s repertoire won’t be disappointed. But, that hard edge was achieved through a subtle tweak in focus towards the percussion and bass from the new guys.

AFR valiantly represents the emerging music scene out of Rochester. It’s a scene that has the attention of people in and out of New York State. And, with that said, the fact that this band is only two years in the game, and already making a name for themselves, is a testament that speaks louder than their music. (If that’s even possible.)

You can purchase Psychopath of Rightousness from iTunes or through Reverbnation.

  • Hearing Aide: Judas Priest ‘Redeemer of Souls’

Judas Priest Redeemer of SoulsIt has been six years since the metal gods Judas Priest released the concept album Nostradamus. Since then, guitarist K.K. Downing retired from the band and Judas Priest embarked on their Epitaph World Tour for the past 2 years, thought to have been their last. Now with Redeemer of Souls, the seventeenth album from Judas Priest, new guitarist Richie Faulker is paired with lead guitarist Glenn Tipton, showcasing killer riffs and solos that combined with powerful vocals from Rob Halford. The album has lots of range from blazing metal tracks to some of the slower, gloomy atmospheric tracks.

“Dragonaut”, the opening track, is a fast and thrashy song that kicks off the album and sets the tone. The title track then kicks in with a more guitar solo-focused approach before “Halls of Vahalla” displays some of Halford’s top-notch sonic vocals.   The next four tracks take a slower yet crunchy direction. Fans of “Diamonds and Rust” will really like this part of the album. The album kicks into high gear once again with “Metalizer”.

One really great stand out track is “Secrets of the Dead”; It’s easily one of the catchiest guitar riffs of 2014. The last two tracks, “Battle Cry” and “Beginning of the End”, end the album very appropriately.

Overall, Redeemer of Souls is a fantastic release from Judas Priest. It’s much better than Nostradamus, but comparable to Angel of Retribution. This album is a message to the fans saying there’s still a lot left in the tank. Be sure to catch Judas Priest with Steel Panther this fall as they will be kicking off their tour in Rochester on October 1 and stopping in Brooklyn eight days later on October 9.

Key track: Secrets of the Dead

  • Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus to Raise Washington Avenue Armory

Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus The Washington Avenue Armory announced this morning legendary heavy metal group Slayer, will headline a show on November 25th that will include Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus.

“We are way f—ing excited about hitting the road again with Suicidal and Exodus,” said Slayer frontman Tom Araya. “F—ing intense. See you in the fall.”

Each of the three bands has had a hand in establishing the popularity of heavy metal music from the start of the 1980s.  Slayer went as far as winning two Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance in 2007 (“Eyes of the Insane”) and 2008 (“Final Six”).  This tour comes a year after the loss of original member, guitarist Jeff Hanneman.

In 2010, Hanneman contracted necrotizing fasciitis and his only performance after that was two songs during an encore at one of Slayer’s Big 4 performances in April 2011.

A few weeks ago Rob Dukes parted ways with Exodus, former vocalist Steve ‘Zetro’ Souza plans to return to fill the role.

The US tour launches November 12th from Oakland, CA.

Tickets for Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus can be purchased through all Ticketmaster locations, through the Armory’s box office, or charge-by-phone at 800-745-3000.

  • Photo Gallery: Ghost B.C and King Dude at Best Buy Theater NYC

New York welcomed back the Swedish rockers known as Ghost B.C on May 14. This time accompanied by very dark folks King Dude, they delivered a powerful performance to a packed Best Buy Theater.  With a nice touch of neo-folk, the lesser known King Dude opened the ceremony with a beautiful set of Luciferian music. The mystery that surrounds Ghost, their enigmatic, mysterious personnel known as The Nameless Ghouls, and their leader Papa Emeritus II will forever draw in a mass of faithful followers that gather around to celebrate a black mass of 70’s style rock. The electricity and emotion were in the air as their devotees chanted along all night with passion and faith to some of their biggest hits.

Setlist: Infestissumam, Per Aspera ad Inferi, Ritual, Prime Mover, Jigolo Har Megiddo, Con Clavi Con Dio, Elizabeth, Body and Blood, Death Knell, Here Comes the Sun, Depth of Satan’s Eyes, Stand by Him, Genesis, Year Zero, If You Have Ghosts, Ghuleh/Zombie Queen, Monstrance Clock

  • Rock On the Range 2014: Day Three

On day three of Rock on the Range, rangers traded in their ponchos for T-shirts and bikinis. Already a step ahead of the first two days before it had even begun, a karaoke version of “Sweet Caroline” had everyone singing at the top of their lungs. The music faded out, replaced by the heavy guitar intro to “Pleasure and Pain”. Rather than waste time with small talk, they made the most of the short set, packing in as many songs as possible.

An opening slot on the main stage didn’t seem to do Trivium justice. Following the recent departure of drummer Nick Augusto, the band was still on point, getting everyone moving on their latest single “Strife” and setting the bar high for the bands that followed, with a contagious energy on closing song “In Waves”. Australia’s Twelve Foot Ninja brought the Jäger Stage a quirky and refreshing fusion of rock and reggae before it was time to return to the main stage for Adelitas Way. Lineup changes and some time off the road served the band well. Frontman Rick DeJesus never stood still, promising to join whichever side of the stadium gave him the most energy. The closing notes of “Invincible” came, and DeJesus made good on his promise, crowd surfing from the front of the pit to the back, and then back again. Asking Alexandria’s lead singer Danny Worsnop is working his way up again in new project We Are Harlot, featuring members of Silvertide and Sebastian Bach. The new group were obviously no stranger to big crowds, delivering an impressive and fast paced set. Wolfmother seemed to be an unusual choice with this years metal heavy lineup. Donning short shorts, guitarist and singer Andrew Stockdale hit every note without hesitation throughout a set that seemed to flow together like one long guitar solo.

Mastodon hit the main stage next, fueling the crowd with melodic metal. Each song had it’s own character with each member of the band singing a song or two to keep things fresh. Over at the Ernie Ball Stage, Of Mice and Men were playing to perhaps the most insane crowd of the weekend. A circle pit that looked more like a running track moved nonstop amidst an insane sea of bodies flying through the air.Impeccable skill from guitarist Mark Tremonti combined with the powerful vocals of Myles Kennedy made for an unforgettable set from Alter Bridge. The new single “Addicted to Pain” marked the first sighting of Spider-Man crowd surfing his way to the front, and the classically inspired guitar played against heavy riffs throughout the too short set.

The general consensus at past years of Rock on the Range appeared to be that Five Finger Death Punch brought a performance far bigger than their opening set times. This year the band was second to last on the main stage, and security had doubled in size in preparation. A traffic jam of crowd surfers rolled above the crowd the instant “Under and Over It” began. Each and every member did their part to entertain  and interact with the crowd as they sped through a hit filled set list. Guitarist Jason Hook sat down with an acoustic guitar midway through the set, accompanying singer Ivan Moody on “Remember Everything”. The lighter ballad was the calm before the storm, which picked back up for the duration of the set.

Just a few short minutes after 9 pm, the lights on the Main Stage dimmed for the last time as headliner Kid Rock slowly made his way out onto the stage. Before he walked out, a clip of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin”” was played from the speakers and cut off appropriately during “born and raised in south Detroit” leaving the audience to scream the lyrics from the top of their lungs and officially introduce Kid Rock. He spoke a small prayer from behind the stage getting the crowd riled up in anticipation and finally emerged onto the stage accompanied by sparklers going off in the background. Kid Rock took into account that it was a rock show so he kept the energy high by jumping up and down across the stage and doing cool little mic tosses during “You Never Met a Motherf***er Quite Like Me.” Other songs included in the setlist were “American Badass,” “Cocky,” and of course, “All Summer Long.”

  • June Storms in With a Blaze of Metal Glory

In a one-two punch that even the most fanatic of moshers couldn’t ignore, the beginning of June 2014 brought new singles of Metal Glory from two of some of the most esteemed bands among headbangers.

Yesterday, Sweden’s Opeth, known for mixing absolutely brutal riffs and growling vocals with progressive psychedelia akin to King Crimson, released their newest single “Cusp of Eternity” from their upcoming 11th studio release, Pale Communion. Like their last album, Watershed, the death metal vocals remain absent as the band continues to head towards the path of progressive rock. However, unlike that last album, this single at least indicates a more focused effort, with a nice flow and a decidedly “evil” feel to it. Check the animated video out on Vimeo here.

    Mastodon - Rockstar Mayhem Festival

Today, Upstate NY’s Mastodon released the second track from the forthcoming Once More ‘Round The Sun. If any band on earth has captured the fire Metallica left behind with 1990’s The Black Album, the Atlanta foursome is it. The newest track “Chimes at Midnight” seems to find a home somewhere in between the bare bones metal of the last release “The Hunter” and the blinding changes and underlying spooky vocals of Mastodon’s early days.
