  • CNY Gets Early Christmas Gift – Trace Adkins’ ‘The King’s Gift’ Tour

    IMG_6315-2

Central New York was recently honored to kick off their holiday season with a very special guest, Trace Adkins, who is currently touring and promoting his new Christmas album ,The King’s Gift. The Stanley Center for the Performing Arts was honored to be on the list of venues he is visiting during this tour.

Trace, best known as an award winning country performer and the winner of the All Star Celebrity Apprentice, surprised fan club members and special guests with a special pre-performance and question and answer session.  With his wit and down to earth mannerisms, he answered questions, shared stories of his family and spoke of his projects and past events as though he was just like ordinary folk.  However, once the show began, it was apparent just how much of a superstar this man was and how respected and loved he is by his fellow bandmates and audiences all over the world.

The setting for the show looked as though it was straight out of a  Currier and Ives Christmas card. Trace entered bearing gifts and throughout the night shared not only his musical renditions of popular Christmas tunes, but also the history behind each tune.  The Celtic flavor of the night added a special uniqueness to the music appreciated by the audience, and his rendition of “We Three Ships” with the Celtic intro by Andrea Zohn was one of the most impressive renditions of the tune ever sung.  Traveling with some of the most talented musicians, audiences are also being treated to an introduction of up and coming musician Lily Costner whose angelic voice together with Trace’s bass blends so beautifully on numbers such as “Silent Night”.

With a night filled with music, humor, and nostalgia, Central New York thanked Trace Adkins and for making a stop at The Stanley and kicking off the Christmas season.

  • A Look at One Last Shot

As the frontman to Syracuse’s One Last Shot, the 23-year-old takes to those notebooks to find the words that will accompany the band’s music.  Together, it’s a matrimony between the ethereal world of his craft, and the driving force of the music.

As a wordsmith, Jeremy Miller is a slave to every epiphany. At home, he has notebooks, napkins and spare scraps of paper, for each time he has been visited by his muse.

“I have notebooks stacked with pages, and pages of lyrics and poems and random thoughts I quickly write down,” said Miller.

“My notebook has turned into my cell phone notepad,” said Miller, “but if I have paper around and don’t think about my cell phone I’ll write down ideas quick.  (Laughs.)  If I don’t do that I could forget the idea as soon as I think of it.”

One Last Shot carries the label of “local band”, one that calls Syracuse home as the band struggles to branch out farther.  They’ve played Buffalo and Rochester.  As one would expect, they aspire to do more.

One Last Shot, out of Rochester, NY, includes Rikki Kemz, David Royal, Angelo Zinkovitch, Adam VVlassis and Jeremy Miller. (Photo credit: One Last Shot)

Calling them a local band would be misleading.  They avoid the mistake of relating their sound to Metallica – is that before And Justice for All or after the Black Album when they went grunge?  Nah.

“Our influence (musically) is based off of a lot of music,” said Miller. “We’re very musically diverse people.”

This October, the band released Bastards of the Plague.  It’s a 12-song LP that clocks in a little over a half-an-hour.  No bombastic tracks on this one, as the longest track noses around the four-minute range.  The band’s musical diversity is most apparent as their sound transitions from metal to almost punk as one goes chronologically through the CD.

“I was listening to a lot of Elvis, Smashing Pumpkins, Danzig and Every Time I Die,” said Miller. “[But}the band as a whole really is influenced by the post-hardcore of the early 2000’s. It’s when we really felt the scene was amazing.

“Usually I close my eyes when listening to the guitars and drums and think of a story going on to the music. If it was a soundtrack to a movie, what would be going on in the scene? Then I see if I already have something I wrote forever ago that works… but usually I write new lyrics to the songs.”

The soundtrack to Bastards of the Plague includes many action sequences.  “Hell’s Empty” is one of a few battle anthems that pits the protagonist against the forces of Hell itself.

This is the moment to choose your sides

    Everyone’s got to pick

If not you’re just born to die

    They’re coming

    We’re running

But I refuse to feel the fire burn inside the Devil’s eyes

    Hell’s empty

    They walk among us tonight!

“Bring Out the Dead” is another such anthem, one that showcases some of the precision of Rikki Kemz rapid drum play.  He brings the cadence to a feverish pace that accompanies the theme of the song nicely.

The metal aspect of this LP ends with “A Lizard in Brenda.”  (Now, hardcore metal fans should not be concerned about this perceived shift in genres.  It’s subtle, if there at all.)  Matt Good of From First to Last contributes an eerily angelic voice to an otherwise graphic song describing vengeance in the most violent of ways.  Good’s addition provides depth and complexity that makes this track standout.  William Control (Aiden) also makes a noteworthy contribution on “Bury A Legend”, not only providing his pipes but his wordsmith talents as well.

Brenda is followed by “Neon Gods” paying homage to the barroom brawlers of the world, and continues to impress from there.  Each of the remaining songs possess introductions that are reminiscent of The Offspring’s Smash.  The first few seconds of guitars , played by David Royal, Angelo Zinkovitch and Adam Vlassis (bass), play along with Kemz in a similar fashion to the legendary California punk rockers.

Steve Sopchak, who has produced and mixed for larger acts like, The Venetia Fair, Ice Nine Kills, The Ataris, and Such Gold, adds a professional touch that does not allow the vocals or any one instrument overpower the rest.  Should you have the opportunity to see One Last Shot, take that opportunity.  A CD purchase would also not be regrettable. Bastards of the Plague is a well-polished showcase of a local band that is deserving of more attention.

  • Get Lucky this Friday the 13th with The Kollectiv and Groovestick

    thekollectiv2

This Friday at 9pm don’t miss two of Upstate New York’s fresh and funky bands, The Kollectiv and GrooveStick, appearing at The Hollow in Albany. Groovestick has become a growing Capital District sensation with their heavy organ infused, progressive funk. The trio is a collaboration with Dan Gerken on guitar (Timbre Coup/Mirk), Chris Carballeira on organ/keys (Dirty Paris, Funk Evolution) and Frantz Celestin on drum kit (The Kollectiv, Dirty Paris).

This will be a special reunion show for The Kollectiv, since they have had band members living on the west coast and haven’t played together for months. The original lineup consists of keyboardist Eric Luba, guitarist Jaden Carlson, Frantz Celestin on drums (GrooveStick), Chris Duffy on bass (Dirty Paris), Lars Viola on turntables (M.A.E.), and guitarist Taylor Frederick (Technicolor Tone Factory). Deep into December, they are staying true to the old holiday saying, “There’s no place like home for the holidays” and eager to see long awaited fans and friends in Albany and at the Black Oak Tavern in Oneonta on Saturday.

Before their big weekend, was lucky to catch some free time with Taylor Frederick about their time apart, practice and the year ahead.

Susan Rice: It’s been quite some time since the Kollectiv performed in Upstate New York. What have you guys been working on since your time off?

Taylor Frederick: Well Duffy is finishing up college in Albany as of right now, Lars is down in NYC producing and working with his hip-hop projects at True Statement., Frantz has been hard at work with his new funk trio Groovestick, and Eric and myself moved out to Boulder, CO at the end of May, and dove into the music scene out here pretty quickly. He is now in The Jaden Carlson Band, and I am now playing with Technicolor Tone Factory. As for Eric and myself, I know JCB is planning on a two month national tour starting at the end of February or beginning of March, and TTF will also be on tour at that time heading west toward California, and also heading south into Texas around the same time. Tour dates are going to be released in early 2014.

SR: Do you find it difficult to keep in touch with band members living across the country? Do you log in practice time with each other?

TF: It’s a little difficult at times. You tend to get caught up in life, and sometimes that makes time fly by a bit faster than one would like. But we do keep in touch quite a bit. Since Eric and I are out here we have been running the old stuff and some new surprises for the run and the rest of the boys have been doing their own individual runs on the material.

SR: Do you guys feel like you will need like you need a lot of practice before the show? I would be nervous if I had to play with a band that I haven’t seen in month’s haha.

TF: Well the funny story is the band was founded on straight improv, even the songs. We just kind of get lucky that we all know them well enough that when we hear a tease of something, we all pick up on it and can go right in. It’s a pretty amazing bond to have with a group of musicians. It doesn’t happen often but when it does its magic. For the run however we have been learning a bunch of new material on our own, and whatever we decide on, the setlists will kind of determine what we can fit in between point A and point B.

SR: What is the band most excited for on your Holiday/reunion run in Upstate NY?

TF: We’re just pumped to be playing music together again. It’s always a good time when we get together. Our friends from all over the place always come out as well and we seem to make new ones at ever show. It’s slowly turning into just a giant family reunion.

SR: Does the Kollectiv have any plans for 2014 that fans can look forward to? New music? More East Coast shows?

TF: As far as 2014 you never know. There have been some old studio recordings that just may resurface, and maybe a couple festival appearances? We’ll have to wait and see. Right now just keep an eye out for JCB, TTF, Groovestick, M.A.E, Dirty Paris and our other respected projects!

  • Mike Gordon Band Coming to the Northeast and Releasing a New Album Next Year

    2014tour-300x300

In very exciting news this week, Mike Gordon band will be releasing a new album, Overstep, on February 25 and supporting it with a tour that crosses the country.  The tour will start at the fabulous Westcott Theater in Syracuse, NY on February 28th and the next night at Webster Hall in New York City.  The tour will see Mike and his band go across the United States before coming back a month later to wrap up the tour at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA on April 5th and Higher Ground in Burlington, VT on April 6th.

The new album will be his first since Moss in 2010.  Mike shared songwriting duties with guitarist and longtime collaborator Scott Murawski (Max Creek) and handed over the producing reins for the first time in his solo career, enlisting Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Uncle Tupelo, Pixies). He also invited a few new players into the studio, including legendary drummer Matt Chamberlain (Jon Brion, Fiona Apple).  Mike will be joined on the road by his longtime band – Scott Murawski (guitar), Craig Myers (percussion), Tom Cleary (keyboards) and Todd Isler (drums). It was also announced that the band’s new repertoire will be augmented by hints of secret synesthetic mad scientist gadgetry on and around the stage.  This can only mean very exciting things to come from these shows.

Tickets are on sale now at Mike’s website, with public sales starting this weekend.

  • Watertown is blown away by Halestorm

The Grammy award-winning band, Halestorm, came to Watertown, N.Y. this past Saturday (November 30th) and rocked the thousands in attendance at Jefferson Community College.

Opening for Halestorm was local legends, Lake Effect Mud, promoting their album, Eyes Open Wide. They wasted no time in showing us why this small town band belongs on stage with big names like Halestorm.

Lead vocalist, Jason Johnson, commanded attention from his audience with a powerful voice. He kept the energy alive and engaged the whole room. The fans loved him. Johnson’s vocals, combined with the incredible talent of Bryant Pignone, Kyle Pignone, and Jessie Hall, made Lake Effect Mud an unstoppable force. Personally, I can not wait to see what is next for them.

Halestorm followed in the wake of Lake Effect Mud’s energy. I had previously heard nothing but wonderful things about Halestorm in concert, but even then I had no idea for what I was in store.

The rockers from Pennsylvania opened the show with a few high energy songs like “Mz Hyde.” Immediately we can see what a powerhouse Lzzy Hale is. Between her vocals and incredible energy she is captivating. Joe Hottinger and Josh Smith compliment Lzzy very well with amazing talent and energy. Then we have Arejay Hale on the drums. I have found in many bands the drummer just fades into the background, not really seen, but not Hale. He is as much a part of the show as Lzzy is up front and center. You can see he really enjoys what he is doing, and we enjoy watching him do it. They continue the show with hits like “Dirty Work” and “Familiar Taste of Poison.” Then the guys exit the stage leaving Lzzy alone on the keyboards. She begins to play “Break In”, her voice is beautiful and haunting. Lzzy ends the song and we move onto Arejay’s drum solo.

For five minutes you can’t look away as he plays his drums with a variety of tools – sticks, large sticks, and then just his hands; he doesn’t just play the drums, he puts on a show! If you don’t enjoy watching this man perform you are not paying attention. The band returned to the stage and closed the show with their hit “I Get Off.”

Watertown experienced a night of music we wont soon forget. If you are a metal fan, or even just love live music, these are the bands to see. What an incredible night.
