  • All Good Takes Hiatus for 2014 Summer Festival Season – Promoters Promise to Return in 2015

    allgoodhiatus

All Good Music Festival announced yesterday that after seventeen years of the infamous festival, they are taking a hiatus in 2014. There seems to have been some issues with the fixed residency of the fest at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio – where the festival has been held since 2012.

The Official All Good Music Festival & Campout website had this to say –

After 17 consecutive years the All Good Music Festival is taking a year off in 2014 with solid plans to return in 2015 at an unspecified venue. Festival organizers Tim Walther and Junipa Contento are taking this time to develop and cultivate a long–term location for the return of All Good Festival by bringing it back home to the mid–atlantic region, where they have proudly presented live music events for the past 18 years. “We want all of our fans to know that we are extremely grateful for all of their support, dedication and the cherished experiences we’ve had on the mountaintop and elsewhere, and to rest easy knowing that the All Good Festival that we’ve all built together and loved for so long is in the works for even more amazing memories and a return in the summer of 2015. Meanwhile, we will continue to present live events in the Baltimore/Washington DC area.”

To get the latest All Good Festival information fans are encouraged to register for email updates at www.allgoodfestival.com. Fans of the event are also welcomed to sound off by sharing support, feedback, memories, photos and more at www.facebook.com/AllGoodMusicFestival.

  • Cabinet’s Susquehanna Breakdown Music Festival Announced

Cabinet_festivalCabinet, in conjunction with Live Nation, announced their 2nd annual music festival ever to play The Pavilion at Montage Mountain on Saturday, May 10th. Continuing in the “named after a Cabinet song” tradition, this year’s festival has been named SUSQUEHANNA BREAKDOWN MUSIC FESTIVAL. New to the festival this year will be the addition of more performing artists, a second stage, more craft and food vendors, family friendly camping (on the pavilion lawn!) and much, much more. Full lineup, charity partner and new festival addition details will roll out in the coming weeks and months. Stay tuned.

Fan Club Tickets go on sale Monday, Dec. 23 at 10am and will be available at Ticketmaster.com, The Pavilion Box Office (1000 Montage Mountain Road, Scranton, Pa), Ticketmaster Outlets or by-phone at 800-745-3000.

  • ‘The Hard Working Americans’ – A New Band Brought Together by Todd Snider

“I know we don’t look like poster children for anybody’s political campaign, but we’re all about taking patriotism back for the silly and the absurd, the broken and the bleeding, the subversives and the stoned. Patriotism shouldn’t belong to the rigid structures of the airport security line or the football field. My favorite patriot is Yankee Doodle, and that guy stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni. Long, strange trip, indeed.”

    Hardworking Americans

Singer Todd Snider has recently addressed fans in a letter regarding a new band he has formed – The Hard Working Americans are quite simply a ‘band of friends from all across America‘, says Snider. Snider goes on to say that he formed the band because he wanted to be in a band that wanted to be great, whatever that meant.

Todd Snider is known for his off the wall lyrics and show antics, with lyrics like – “They say 92 percent of everything you learned in school was just bullshit you’ll never need”, how can you not love his music. Snider plays festivals and mingles with members of the jam band scene and with these pool of talented friends, Snider has comprised a group of – the best songwriters from the Americana world and the best musicians from the jam band scene.

Joining together, Dave Schools of Widespread Panic, Neal Casal of the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Duane Trucks and Chad Staehly of Great American Taxi – Snider has formed the Hard Working Americans. Snider says,

“We aren’t a side project. When we’re together, this is our main thing. We mean to do what we’re doing. The other guys in the band told me I was in charge, so I ordered everyone to do exactly what they wanted. They wanted to play.”

Hard Working Americans self-titled debut, out January 21 via Melvin Records/Thirty Tigers – EPK: Hard Working Americans Clip. Upcoming Tour Dates: http://thehardworkingamericans.com/#Shows

  • Fund the Funk: Funktapuss Launches Kickstarter Campaign for New Album

If you’ve been keeping up with Upstate, you know about an incredible funk act from the Cape Cod area known as Funktapuss. The five-piece band has been slowly growing their fan base and making their name known through increased touring. After a late November stop in Buffalo, we tipped you off about how talented these guys really are. Bassist Brian Vanderbeek’s play is often times Wooten-esque and the other four are just as captivating. With the recent tour all wrapped up, the band is now set to record the material they’ve been compiling since their first release.

Announced last week, the funk five-piece launched a Kickstarter campaign, asking fans to help with the cost of recording the new album. This request isn’t coming without its fair share of return though, as the band will give away various prizes depending on your contribution. The prizes start at a free download of the new album and scale all the way up to having the opportunity to actually be on the album. There’s even a prize where the band will setup and play at your house (if you live close enough). This album can’t come soon enough as their inclusion of three new songs at their appearance in Buffalo showed substantial growth and an even deeper groove. Check out the Funktapuss Kickstarter page and help fund some new funk that I know will be well worth the investment.

  • No details on Joey Jordison Slipknot split

News of Joey Jordison’s departure as drummer from Slipknot was striking the Internet late last night, soon after the band released the following statement.

SlipknotNow, 24 hours after the announcement, fans of the heavy metal rockers out of Iowa, are still seeking answers as to why?

The band’s announcement left much to be desired for details. The 38-year-old drummer, and co-song writer, has been with the band since their inception in 1995.

In August 2010 Jordison was voted the best drummer of the past 25 years by readers of Rhythm Magazine. He was selected over a field of drummesr that included Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart, Phil Collins, and Dave Grohl. Jordison was humbled in his response.

“I’m at a loss for words,” he had said. “This is beyond unbelievable. Something like this reminds me every day why I continue to do this.”

The band had promised to release more details at a later time. But, for now, fans are left to speculate as to the reason behind the split; not to mention what kind of future remains in store for the band.

Slipknot last released an album with All Hope Is Gone in 2008. Their last tour was the 2012 Knotfest, a two-day event that launched out of Iowa and finished in Wisconsin. It was intended to be an annual event, but no such show took place this past year.

In addition to announcing Jordison’s departure, Slipknot stated plans to release new material sometime in 2014.

  • Get Lucky this Friday the 13th with The Kollectiv and Groovestick

    thekollectiv2

This Friday at 9pm don’t miss two of Upstate New York’s fresh and funky bands, The Kollectiv and GrooveStick, appearing at The Hollow in Albany. Groovestick has become a growing Capital District sensation with their heavy organ infused, progressive funk. The trio is a collaboration with Dan Gerken on guitar (Timbre Coup/Mirk), Chris Carballeira on organ/keys (Dirty Paris, Funk Evolution) and Frantz Celestin on drum kit (The Kollectiv, Dirty Paris).

This will be a special reunion show for The Kollectiv, since they have had band members living on the west coast and haven’t played together for months. The original lineup consists of keyboardist Eric Luba, guitarist Jaden Carlson, Frantz Celestin on drums (GrooveStick), Chris Duffy on bass (Dirty Paris), Lars Viola on turntables (M.A.E.), and guitarist Taylor Frederick (Technicolor Tone Factory). Deep into December, they are staying true to the old holiday saying, “There’s no place like home for the holidays” and eager to see long awaited fans and friends in Albany and at the Black Oak Tavern in Oneonta on Saturday.

Before their big weekend, was lucky to catch some free time with Taylor Frederick about their time apart, practice and the year ahead.

Susan Rice: It’s been quite some time since the Kollectiv performed in Upstate New York. What have you guys been working on since your time off?

Taylor Frederick: Well Duffy is finishing up college in Albany as of right now, Lars is down in NYC producing and working with his hip-hop projects at True Statement., Frantz has been hard at work with his new funk trio Groovestick, and Eric and myself moved out to Boulder, CO at the end of May, and dove into the music scene out here pretty quickly. He is now in The Jaden Carlson Band, and I am now playing with Technicolor Tone Factory. As for Eric and myself, I know JCB is planning on a two month national tour starting at the end of February or beginning of March, and TTF will also be on tour at that time heading west toward California, and also heading south into Texas around the same time. Tour dates are going to be released in early 2014.

SR: Do you find it difficult to keep in touch with band members living across the country? Do you log in practice time with each other?

TF: It’s a little difficult at times. You tend to get caught up in life, and sometimes that makes time fly by a bit faster than one would like. But we do keep in touch quite a bit. Since Eric and I are out here we have been running the old stuff and some new surprises for the run and the rest of the boys have been doing their own individual runs on the material.

SR: Do you guys feel like you will need like you need a lot of practice before the show? I would be nervous if I had to play with a band that I haven’t seen in month’s haha.

TF: Well the funny story is the band was founded on straight improv, even the songs. We just kind of get lucky that we all know them well enough that when we hear a tease of something, we all pick up on it and can go right in. It’s a pretty amazing bond to have with a group of musicians. It doesn’t happen often but when it does its magic. For the run however we have been learning a bunch of new material on our own, and whatever we decide on, the setlists will kind of determine what we can fit in between point A and point B.

SR: What is the band most excited for on your Holiday/reunion run in Upstate NY?

TF: We’re just pumped to be playing music together again. It’s always a good time when we get together. Our friends from all over the place always come out as well and we seem to make new ones at ever show. It’s slowly turning into just a giant family reunion.

SR: Does the Kollectiv have any plans for 2014 that fans can look forward to? New music? More East Coast shows?

TF: As far as 2014 you never know. There have been some old studio recordings that just may resurface, and maybe a couple festival appearances? We’ll have to wait and see. Right now just keep an eye out for JCB, TTF, Groovestick, M.A.E, Dirty Paris and our other respected projects!

  • Wooten Brothers Bring the Family to Albany and Buffalo for the Holidays

Musical families have been around in the business for quite some time with last names like Jackson, Dylan, and Marley indicating an extensive lineage of artists.  There have been few that have the collective talent the family of the Wooten Brothers possess.  While not as known as some of the aforementioned examples, Victor, Joseph, Roy, and Regi have already left a lasting mark in the industry and continue to widen their influence today.

    Wooten Brothers

This Sunday, December 15th and Monday, December 16th, The Wooten Brothers will be taking the stage at at The Egg in Albany and The Tralf Music Hall in Buffalo, respectively.  It has been several years since the foursome have toured and they should be firing on all cylinders with the Albany and Buffalo dates being two of the last three of this incredible tour.  It is rare that these guys get together, so this is a special one for not only the fans, but the four on stage as well. The show that awaits is a night of pure fusion as each have a huge array of influences that could be pulled from at any point. Roy, also known as Futureman, is the drummer with brother and bassist Victor in Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Roy plays what he calls a “drumitar” which looks similar to a guitar, but employs various drum sounds via an array of buttons. Those familiar with classic rock might also know of Joseph who is the keyboardist for the Steve Miller Band. Something must have been in the water because there was no shortage of talent to go around this family.

    vw_pub2_photo by steve parker

If still needing more of a push though, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll catch one of the world’s best bassist that night. Victor Wooten, yes from above, is one of the most recognized and talented bass players both currently and overall. Youngest of all of the brothers, Victor has won five Grammy’s with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones adding his smooth groove and virtuosic touch to a bluegrass/jazz fusion. Among other awards, Victor was also named the tenth greatest bassist of all time by Rolling Stone readers in 2011. The sounds he pulls out of his bass could go unexplained by a seasoned musician.

Albany and Buffalo were luckily selected as two of the 13 dates along the East Coast for this two-week family jaunt. Thanks to the brothers, Upstate gets an early gift this year.
