  • Syracuse Will Ring in 2014 With Jimkata and The Manhattan Project At The Westcott Theatre

Syracuse jamizens are in for a treat this New Years Eve as two of New York’s hottest up and coming acts converge upon the Westcott Theatre for a night of excessive face melting. Kicking things off is Rochester’s electro-versatile duo of The Manhattan Project. Drummer Shawn Drogan and keys master Charles Lindner have had a huge year playing in excess of 60 shows of their electronica inspired mastery. Unlike typical EDM acts, these two strive to mix things up with well ordered combinations of their unique and jammed out originals and done-their-way covers.085-DSC_1489

Bringing in the New Year in style will be Ithaca’s hottest act, Jimkata. The four-piece shares their own electronica inspired influences, but bring plenty of multiple genre side journeys in their itinerary that have electrified audiences from coast to coast. The band has been touring heavily this fall in support of their fan funded critically acclaimed newest release, Die Digital. Jimkata also just dropped their first live album, 10 More Songs which is available on iTunes.

Doors open promptly at 8PM for the $20, show which includes the obligatory complimentary champagne toast at midnight. Tickets can be purchased online here. Finish 2014 in style as this one promises to be an experience to remember. The Westcott Theater is located at 524 Westcott St, Syracuse, NY 13210.

  • Dopapod To Part Ways With Original Drummer Neal “Fro” Evans

A few months back, Brooklyn’s hottest jam commodity Dopapod announced that drummer Neal “Fro” Evans would be taking a little hiatus from touring. Yesterday the band announced that the hiatus would be permanent and that sit in drummer Scotty Zwang would become a permanent member of the ‘pod. Fro left fans with a parting letter, here it is:FRO

    “Dear Dopapod Friends and Family,

Many of you know that I took a break from the band two months ago. I left to make sure that I had a happy head on my shoulders. Music is my fire and when I realized that it was getting a little dim, I had to step out and rekindle the flame. I was able to do this on my time off, but when I returned to the band, I found the door to be closed. After 4+ years of growing with this family, living in a van, laying down the beats, putting on amazing shows by playing music that I am very proud of, and most of all meeting/performing for countless amazing humans (and aliens), I am going to move on to something else.

I wish the best for the band, for it would be most disappointing if this decision resulted in its decline in any way. It’s been an incredible ride and I’m so grateful to have been a part of it. The experiences I’ve had and the people I’ve met have been dreams come true. The amazing journey that has been Dopapod would be impossible without all of you, so continue to support them because they are some of the most incredible musicians I’ve ever played with. Also, please follow me and my music into the future and let’s keep doing this thing! Many of you know about my other musical endeavors: Elephant Wrecking Ball (Featuring Scott Flynn of Pretty Lights, on tour soon, see below), MOM AND DAD (featuring Chuck Jones of Dopapod), and Cashed Fools. Check them out! I live and breathe music and I will continue to make music with others who do the same. I love you all and can’t wait to see you again from behind the drums and anywhere else.

With the most sincere love for all of you. Thank you.

    Neal”

    Bonus:
Here is a link to the last show that I played with Dopapod, from Fall Down Fest in CT. It is one of my favorite performances of the band, and I couldn’t be more stoked to have ended on such a high note. I also know that it was a favorite of its taper, MKDEVO.

  • Has Statewide Music Found a New Festival Home at Carey Lake? – Phallfest in Review

Statewide Music has become well known in Upstate, NY for well run, family friendly, and talent loaded music festivals throughout the years. However the past few sites have been hampered by poor maintenance, were way off the beaten path and couldn’t handle a little weather like any good mother nature hardened festival denizen. Enter Carey Lake and the debut of Phall Fest. Gone are the muddy ruts, the precarious hills to navigate, and the millions of mosquitoes circling overhead. This site is amazingly convenient; located just off of Route 441 in Macedon NY, has ample flat space for both car camping and woods camping, plenty of room for centrally located vending, and a restaurant and bar at the front of the property for those that like to fest high brow.

    DSC_0249

The lineup was primarily made up of Rochester based bands with a handful from the Syracuse and Buffalo areas. Vending was available and convenient and the porta-potties never got to that ‘OMG level’ many festivals can attain. Beyond the two days of top-notch musical entertainment, there was also some excellent pyro-spinning and eating from the Solare Flare troupe. Musicians wandered freely pow-wowing with fans and sitting in with fellow music makers. Both stages were professionally built and beautifully decorated, the main one wrapped in an autumn motif; the woods under a canopy of tarps and Christmas lights. A new home indeed.

If you missed the fun, don’t fret as Carey Lake will be a busy place next year, with the second annual Spring Revival (May 9-11th) and third Fiddler’s Picnic (July 11-13th) already scheduled.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Aqueous Announces Winter Tour and Nietzsche’s Residency

Buffalo’s groove rock champions Aqueous announced their winter dates today as the tour will kick off with two Upstate shows in Rochester (Dub Land Underground) and Buffalo (Nietzsche’s) before heading west for the band’s first headlining event in Chicago. New Years will be celebrated at Erie, PA’s  top music venue the crooked i and, according to the buzz on the street, will be an affair you won’t want to miss. Upstate gets a few more visits in January on the 3rd in Syracuse (The Lost Horizon) and the 24th at Balloons in Ellicottville.

    wintertour

February features the bands first ever residency at their home base venue Nietzsche’s. Every Wednesday Aqueous will perform with a special top tier guest band which will, no doubt, have plenty of surprises given this is one of the bands favorite places to play.

For the full tour list and info on openers, starting times and ticket prices, check the bands tour page.

  • Something to TAUQ About – Tauk and Aqueous Join Forces in Ithaca

New York City’s Tauk and Buffalo’s Aqueous (TAUQ?) have a problem. The bands had teamed up for the second time of their seven appearances together this fall only to discover, that not one, but BOTH band’s vans are under duress. Luckily, after some quick warranty work, the Tauk-mobile was back in action, and in true musical brotherhood form, they escorted the Aqueous boys on time to Ithaca for their dual show at Lot 10 on October 25th.

    DSC_2051

The venue is new to the Ithaca scene and sits conveniently off the downtown Commons area on South Cayuga Street. Composed of a lower lounge area that features DJs and couches and an upper area with a bar and stage, it’s certainly a welcome addition to a city that has struggled to find a central place for musical gathering since the 2012 closing of Castaways.

Tauk kicked things off around 10:30 with their self described brand of rock fusion. Sounding like a prog-ified MMW with shades of Zappa and King Crimson thrown in, the bands buzz is well deserved. Virtual soundscapes abound between shifting rock-based tension and smooth jazzy ambiance throughout the set. The mostly instrumental songs enveloped the amassing crowd of Gorge-us Ithacans who appreciatively hollered for more. And more they were given in the form of a top notch outro cover of, in this reporters opinion anyway, the BEST Beatles song ever, “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”.

DSC_2083Buffalo’s groove rock powerhouse Aqueous was up next, taking the stage shortly after midnight to a relatively packed house given the cold Southern Tier evening. Having hit the area heavily over the past few years, the band has gathered a local fan base who danced their asses off for seemingly every note of the set. Amongst the set of excellent original material the band still found time for a quick jam on P Diddy’s “Bad Boy’s For Life” with Tauk’s drummer Isaac Teel happily offering up some vocal offerings. After a quick and delicious encore of Radiohead’s “Just”, both bands disappeared into the cool Finger Lakes night.

Fear not if you missed this excellent band duo, as Upstate NY has two more chances to see Tauk and Aqueous team up. This Friday, Rochester gets the love at The DubLand Underground. (18+ 7$ 10pm). Saturday they are off to the legendary Nietzsche’s in Buffalo. (21+ 7$ 9:30PM)

Check out Tauk’s newest single “Sunshine Harry” here.
