  • The Wooten Brothers Light Up The Egg

The Wooten Brothers are not your average family.  They have been playing music together for their entire lives and it shows in the way they perform on stage.  Victor, Joseph, Roy “Futureman,” and Regi play with each other with such ease that it seems like they could do it in their sleep.  On Sunday, December 15, they brought their latest tour to The Egg and played beautifully for their entire two hour performance.

The evening started with Joseph coming out alone, joking with the audience about his birthday being that night and bringing the rest of his brothers out for a Sly Stone medley of songs.  Once the medley ended the brothers began doing a slew of originals that let each member show how talented they were.  Whether it was Joseph on the piano leading R&B ballads, Victor taking the lead on his bass for funkier numbers, or Regi displaying his guitar mastery on the heavier rock songs, each brother proved why they are up on that stage every night.  Roy “Futureman” kept the brothers on point with his steady playing all night on the drums.  He played a regular drum set all night, which is unusual for him as he has an electronic percussion unit for drumming with him more often than not, but he even played that differently as his bass drum was horizontal so he could play it with his hand instead of his foot.

    DSC07934 (1) copy

The brothers told stories between their songs and joked with the audience.  During a James Brown medley, Joseph began to ask for hitting and quitting just like the godfather of soul used to.  His “hit is on 52” was very funny and appropriate as it was his 52nd birthday, and the crowd enjoyed every second of it.  The band even paid tribute to their fifth brother, Rudy, who died a few years ago, with the ballad “Make Me Like a Child.”  It was a touching moment that clearly showed how much these brothers care about one another. The Wooten Brothers are all virtuosos at their respective instruments and it is always a treat to see them play.  In the small confines of The Egg, it truly felt like a private performance for a few friends.  After the show was over, all of the brothers showed their appreciation to the audience by sticking around to sign things and talk with anyone who wanted to.  It was a great gesture by them and a perfect way to end the evening.

  • An Interview with Joe Russo, and Bringing JRAD to The Capitol Theatre

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead (JRAD) will be making their much anticipated return to live music at The Capitol Theatre on December 27. The group, consisting of Joe Russo (drums), Marco Benevento (keys), Scott Metzger (guitar), Dave Dreiwitz (bass), and Tommy Hamilton (guitar), played one show in January at The Brooklyn Bowl to rave reviews.

Many people cited how they sounded the closest to the old psychedelic version of The Grateful Dead than any other tribute act around these days.  That show can be downloaded here from Archive.org.  had a chance to talk with Joe about this show as well as what is on the docket for him next year:

    Joe Russo

Bryan Lasky: So this group debuted in January. To what degree was it logistics that led to nearly a year before the group played again?

Joe Russo: Hmm, not sure. We certainly didn’t go into our show in January ever thinking we would be doing this more than once. I think the incredible amount of fun we all had on stage, plus the tremendous feedback we got from the listeners, led us to the possibility of doing it again. We threw around some ideas about doing it again in late 2014, but after a couple casual conversations with Pete Shapiro about how fun it would be to play The Cap, (and) here we are. It’s just seemed to make sense. Furthur wasn’t playing on New Year’s Eve and we have the opportunity to play the greatest room in the area.  For me it’s a culmination of a few things that is really making this such a special way to end my 2013. I get to play the music that has changed my life, with my best friends, at my favorite venue, surrounded by all of our closest friends and family. I couldn’t be happier!

BL: What has been the best part about playing with Furthur the last couple of years?  Do you have favorite memories or shows?

JR: Furthur completely changed my life. I seriously can’t be more thankful for the opportunity that I’ve had over these years. Being given an opportunity to engage in such a legendary songbook with some of the guys who created it is just beyond words. The venues I’ve gotten to play, the crowds I’ve gotten to play for. The incredible musicians I’ve made contact with, in and outside of the Grateful Dead world. It has been humbling and inspiring.  Out of the hundreds of incredible memories made during Furthur, I’d have to say the first time we played Madison Square Garden takes the cake. That’s a dream fully realized and I will always hold that with me as one of the greatest moments of my life.

    Joe Russo
    JRAD photo by Andrew Blackstien

BL: What is it that you love about The Grateful Dead catalog?

JR: It’s timeless and wildly diverse. I feel like I’m always discovering something new with these songs. Either in their recorded forms or hearing a new take from an old live show. It can be so malleable or it can just be played straight up and down in all its original intention. I can’t think of any other collection of  ‘rock’ songs that can be given such a treatment.

BL:  How much practice is there for these JRAD shows?

JR: A good bit. We’re getting together a few times to work the tunes out. Most importantly, Scott Metzger, Marco Benevento, Dave Dreiwitz and Tom Hamilton are all fearless improvisors and play straight from the heart. I think what I realized last time we played, is that Almost Dead is really five friends creating music in the moment over a Grateful Dead roadmap.

BL: Any chance of the Almost Dead crew going out on a mini-tour anytime?

JR: Never say never, but nothing is planned or being planned. We are all so busy with our own careers, bands, families and schedules. It might be something fun to do eventually, but for now, I think we’re looking at this as a once a year kinda thing. I think we’re just looking to put on the best show we possibly can for ourselves and those in attendance on December 27th. We’re really excited! Gonna be one hell of a setlist, that’s for sure

BL: What recording and touring projects do you have lined up in 2014?

JR: So far, it looks like I’ll be doing a bunch of stuff with Phil Lesh, a nice bit of international playing with Shpongle Live Band (including our third ever show in the U.S. at Red Rocks in May), some Bustle In Your Hedgerow shows at our home, Brooklyn Bowl and hopefully some more touring and recording with Cass McCombs.  I’ve been spending a ton of time in my studio finishing things up for my own record that I hope to release by the end of 2014. Lots of logs in the fire as far as recordings go. I’ve signed on for a couple records in early 2014 as well as getting the ball rolling on bringing two of my favorite musicians together to join me in making an improvised trio record.

As Joe stated above, this is the only show for this band at the moment so don’t miss out in a couple of weeks.  Tickets are available now here.

  • John Medeski Treats The Massry Center to a Stunning Solo Performance

There are musicians that people see clearly pour their heart and soul into a performance. John Medeski did just that on December 7th at The Massry Center at The College of Saint Rose. His just over two hour set was mesmerizing and made you forget you were in a recital hall; it seemed far more like a small jazz club instead. Medeski solo could barely be contained in his playing, frequently standing up and tapping both his feet along with what he was playing. Seeing a musician have that much fun playing for an audience is intoxicating.

john medeski soloThe music itself is not your typical, run of the mill jazz either. Instead, his early training in the classics bleeds through as he moves through classically swung eights and transitions cleanly into a haunting straight melody. Ever the modernist, the sweetness of the melodies never lasted long; it usually fell into discordant breaks while he plucked from within the Steinway to add to his, and its, already stunning sound. The evening opened with ‘Where’s Sly?’ blended with ‘Otis’ and had plenty of improvisation for all. With those two songs alone, Medeski played for nearly 45 minutes straight with only a handful of breaks through the entire two hours.

It was an amazing, intimate evening with a skilled musician and performer. Those who were there received a real treat.

  • Mike Gordon Band Coming to the Northeast and Releasing a New Album Next Year

    2014tour-300x300

In very exciting news this week, Mike Gordon band will be releasing a new album, Overstep, on February 25 and supporting it with a tour that crosses the country.  The tour will start at the fabulous Westcott Theater in Syracuse, NY on February 28th and the next night at Webster Hall in New York City.  The tour will see Mike and his band go across the United States before coming back a month later to wrap up the tour at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA on April 5th and Higher Ground in Burlington, VT on April 6th.

The new album will be his first since Moss in 2010.  Mike shared songwriting duties with guitarist and longtime collaborator Scott Murawski (Max Creek) and handed over the producing reins for the first time in his solo career, enlisting Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Uncle Tupelo, Pixies). He also invited a few new players into the studio, including legendary drummer Matt Chamberlain (Jon Brion, Fiona Apple).  Mike will be joined on the road by his longtime band – Scott Murawski (guitar), Craig Myers (percussion), Tom Cleary (keyboards) and Todd Isler (drums). It was also announced that the band’s new repertoire will be augmented by hints of secret synesthetic mad scientist gadgetry on and around the stage.  This can only mean very exciting things to come from these shows.

Tickets are on sale now at Mike’s website, with public sales starting this weekend.

  • Billy Joel to Play Madison Square Garden Once a Month, Every Month

Rumors had been swirling ever since a press conference for a Billy Joel event at Madison Sqaure Garden was announced last week.  The speculation varied from playing a show once a month for just the year, to playing a different album for four announced shows.  The announcement ended up being that Billy Joel will play at the legendary venue as “the first-ever music franchise” and will play the building once a month for the foreseeable future. This is the first time a venue, anywhere in the country, has done something like this.

    131203_bj_msg509

The Piano Man was already scheduled to play the venue on January 27, February 3, March 21, and April 18 next year.  With this announcement, a birthday show is scheduled for May 9 when Billy turns 65, has been added.  The plan is to continue to play shows as long as their is demand for there to be more.   Billy also got his own logo for the venue to go alongside The Knicks, Rangers, and Liberty.  More shows will be announced in the future.  If you are a fan of The Entertainer, there is no reason to not go down to the Garden in the near future and catch one of these shows.

Billy was quoted at the press conference saying, “Performing at Madison Square Garden is a thrilling experience. I’ve played different venues all over the world, but there’s no place like coming home to The Garden. Since my first show in 1978, I’ve always looked forward to the energy of the crowd. I’m honored to be joining the Madison Square Garden family and look forward to taking the stage of the newly transformed Garden to create many more memorable nights.”  More information can be found at the new website for the partnership here.

Tickets for the May 9 show have a presale that started on December 4 at 10AM and goes until Friday and a general on sale on December 7 at 10AM.

  • The Rascals Brought Broadway to The Palace Theatre

The Rascals pulled into The Palace Theatre on Sunday, November 24th with their beautifully orchestrated Broadway concert to an ecstatic crowd to end their four night run of Upstate New York cities.  Playing 31 songs over a span of over two hours, the band showed why they were one of the most influential bands of the 1960s.DSC05558 (1) copy

“Once Upon A Dream” is not your usual concert.  Throughout the show, the history of the band is told on a gigantic video screen between songs by both the band and actors playing younger versions of the band.  To be able to see all of these hits and get the group’s history all at once is amazing.  Little Steven, best known as one of the guitarists in The E Street Band, helped bring the group back together for this show.  It had been his dream for years to see these four great musicians play together again.  He is also a history buff when it comes to music, so he made sure that the two were paired together, and it really could not have been better.

    DSC05650 (2) copy

The show was split into two sets with the first set getting more of the history of the band from song to song.  By the end of the set the band is getting into the big hits, playing “I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore” right into “Good Lovin’ ” to close out the show.  The audience showed their appreciation for Felix Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati, Dino Danelli, and Gene Cornish, giving the group a standing ovation at the conclusion of the set as well as at the beginning of the second one.DSC05681 (1) copy

The second set saw less video interruption and more musical performance.  A major highlight was “How Can I Be Sure” which let Eddie shine on lead vocals.  He looked to have been taken aback by the ovation from the crowd.  Each member had a chance to shine with Gene doing great guitar work all night, Dino pounding on the drums like a machine, and Felix sounding great vocally and laying down perfection on the keys.  They all seemed very excited to be in Albany as they got quite the ovation after their last song “People Got to Be Free (reprise).”  They thanked everyone, including those who help put the show on, and then sent the crowd home with “See” capping off a great evening.

The show was supposed to return to Broadway in a few weeks, but it has been cancelled.  The band is hoping to reschedule it sometime next year.  Once the dates are announced, you would be wise to make sure you get tickets as this show is not to be missed.  They may be getting up there in age, but the music is still vibrant and the band is in high spirits throughout the show.

Setlist: Set 1 – It’s Wonderful, I’ve Been Lonely Too Long, What is the Reason, You Better Run, Carry Me Back, Slow Down, Mickey’s Monkey>Turn On Your Lovelight>Mickey’s Monkey (Reprise), Come On Up, Baby Let’s Wait, Too Many Fish in the Sea, If You Knew, Hold On, I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore, Good Lovin’

Set 2 – Good Lovin’ (Reprise), Love is a Beautiful Thing, Groovin’, Do You Feel It, Away Away, It’s a Beautiful Morning, Sueno, Find Somebody, A Girl Like You, It’s Love, How Can I Be Sure, People Got to Be Free, Heaven, A Ray of Hope, People Got to Be Free (Reprise)

  • An Interview with Marco Benevento, Coming to Red Square in Albany on December 7th

Keyboardist Marco Benevento has been a creative force for quite some time.  From playing with Joe Russo in “The Duo” to playing with Mike Gordon, Trey Anastasio, and Russo in GRAB, and sitting in with many legends over the years, Marco is no stranger to impressing audiences with his signature sound.  Playing his Hammond B3 and Wurlitzer electric piano, he has made a name for himself as one of the best keyboardists around today.  This tour he is changing it up though and using a 63 key acoustic piano and a Synth to make endless loops that are sure to wow the crowd. His latest release Tigerface has been getting rave reviews throughout the year as he has been touring non-stop behind it.  I had a chance to Interview with Marco Benevento about the upcoming Albany show as well as other topics:

    phpib2A4hPM

Bryan Lasky: Looking back on the year as a whole,  it seems like you have played everywhere under the sun. Do you have a favorite moment from a festival or a show?

Marco Benevento: Pickathon was a great festival out in Oregon just outside of Portland.  There was a wide varitey of music. In the same weekend I saw Feist, Andrew Bird, some band that led a huge square dance and a great band that played some old 70’s soul music. And our band wound up in the new Pixies video because the film maker loved our set!

BL: What has it meant to your music to be able to play with Dave Dreiwitz and Andy Borger for a long time now?  Has it changed your writing process? Is it more collaborative?

MB: We really just have a band vibe now. The live show is unstoppable right now too.  I feel like we can throw curve balls left and right at each other and wind up with some nice surprises in our show.  I’ve been doing the all of the songwriting, but everyone chimes in with there own unique taste and approach to the songs.

BL: You also played with many other artists and groups, such as The M & M’s at Equifunk, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead (JRAD), Bustle in your Hedgerow a number of time celebrating the 10th anniversary of playing together, and various other projects.  How does working with all of these other musicians shape your current work?

MB: It’s just nice to have variety.  It’s also nice to dive into specific bands and learn a lot of their music.  Because of JRAD I now know about 20 or more Dead tunes and because of Bustle I know about 40 Zep tunes and with all of the Levon tributes I know about 40 Band tunes too!  It’s important to learn those timeless tunes and to find out what the formula is that makes it timeless!

BL:  Lately it seems you’ve been incorporating more lyrics into your songs.  What made you go into that direction?

MB:  Good question….I have no idea!  Although, I can say that it feels like a very natural progression for me. It started with syllable singing to some of the melodies that I wrote.  “This Is How It Goes” from TigerFace was a tune that really brought it out I think.  At first my wife, myself and some friends sang and recorded the melody to “This Is How It Goes,” then months later I thought I should have one person sing it and Kal (Traver, of Rubblebucket) came to mind because I’ve always loved the sound of her voice. After actually hearing my tune with a vocalist singing the melody instead of the piano playing the melody I feel like a new door opened.

BL: Have you, Andy, and Dave been recording as a band? Can we expect a release in the coming year?

MB: We are recording in March with an incredible engineer and musician named Richard Swift.  He’s now the keyboardist in The Shins and has recorded and collaborated with some incredible musicians that have been inspiring me lately such as Dan Auerbach and Foxygen.  Hopefully we’ll have a new record out in the Fall of 2014.

BL:  At Red Square in Albany this past June, you said you love the room and would like to do a month residency there at some point. Any news on that front?

MB: Yes!!! The news is that we’re going to do it!!!!!!!!  We’re going to take a vote at our gig (on Dec. 7th) and see which month wins!!!

BL:  Scott Metzger is opening for you with WOLF! on December 7. What can you tell the fans about them

MB: Incredibly tasteful!!!!!!!!!!  I love touring with those guys I feel like it’s a great musical pairing for the night.

This Saturday night is sure to be a great show.  Get there in time to see Scott Metzger with WOLF! and then be ready to dance early into the morning with Marco.  Tickets available now at Redsquare.

  • Pearl Jam Electrifies Buffalo With Career Spanning Performance

Pearl Jam has always been known as an amazing live act going back to when they first started 23 years ago.  On Saturday Oct 12, it was clear that nothing has changed, as they brought the same wild energy to the second night of the Pearl Jam 2013 tour to Buffalo, NY behind the great new album Lightning Bolt.

    Kelli_Marsh_Pearl_Jam-1022

Coming on at 8:20 without an opener, the band started with a great trio of songs. “Pendulum” off the new album, “Low Light” and “Sometimes.” It was the fourth song of the show, “Corduroy”, that really got the building shaking, something that would happen several times throughout the evening.  The band had a great light show that dazzled the crowd the entire night and the first time it was really put into use was during the title track to the new album Lightning Bolt.  The hard rocking tunes continued with “Mind Your Manners” and “Do The Evolution.”  This run of four songs were absolute barn- burners and the crowd ate up every second of it, singing loudly and throwing their hands up in the air.  Pearl Jam fans are some of the most vocal during a show and they showed up in Buffalo loud and clear.

    Kelli_Marsh_Pearl_Jam-1019FINAL

The band then got together to discuss the next song and it seemed for once that they were not following a specific setlist, which is very unusual.  The next highlight came during “Sirens”, a new ballad off off Lightning Bolt that shone just as bright in person as it does on the album.  “Comatose” kept the energy high and it seemed Eddie was pleased with how everything was going and proceeded to tell the crowd a story of how the next song “I Got Id” was thought up with Neil Young during the Mirror Ball sessions.  Eddie is a great storyteller and hearing how Neil asked him for a song and all he could muster up was “I got nothing man, I got shit,” to which Neil said “well there you go, song title Ed.” The set ended with two hard rocking numbers, “State of Love and Trust” and “Porch”, two of their oldest songs that were a perfect cap to an amazing set of music.  These two songs got the crowd so riled up that there were some crowd surfers being passed over everyone, something I’m sure the band has not seen since its earlier days.

    Kelli_Marsh_Pearl_Jam-1002

The first encore began with the band sitting down playing semi-acoustically.  When the band does this it is a treat for the fans, for they do it so flawlessly.  Pearl Jam has really embraced their acoustic side over the years and the three song mini-set was perfect.  After they finished “Future Days”, Eddie said “We are going to play to the small city now”, and the whole band went to the back of the stage and played “Elderly Woman Behind the Small Counter in a Small Town.”  This was a rarity for the back of the audience as they were able to see the whole band, playing right to them and not seeing the back of their heads, which they had done for most of the night up until that point.  The rest of the encore was straight rock and roll with “Rats”, “Got Some”, and an absolutely scorching “Rearviewmirror.”  During the song it looked as though Mike McCready was going to blow his guitar up he was playing so fast.

    Kelli_Marsh_Pearl_Jam-1045

Coming back for the second encore, the band dug into Vs. and Ten tracks “Go” and “Alive”, respectively.  Both are tremendous crowd pleasers and a great way to cap an amazing show.  The lights came on, but Eddie and the band weren’t ready to leave and they went into “Baba O’Riley.”  The Who cover was played with tons of energy and smiles could be seen throughout the building.  To end the night they chose the great song “Indifference.”  Even the tune is slower than most, it was a beautiful way to end a very high energy show.  Pearl Jam may be an older band these days, but their energy has not waned a bit.

    Kelli_Marsh_Pearl_Jam-1039

Setlist: Pendulum, Low Light, Sometimes, Corduroy, Lightning Bolt, Mind Your Manners, Do the Evolution, Immortality, My Father’s Son, Even Flow, Swallowed Whole, Sirens, Once, Comatose, I Got Id, Infallible, Present Tense, State of Love and Trust, Porch

Encore: Off He Goes, Yellow Moon, Future Days, Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town, Rats, Got Some, Rearviewmirror

Encore 2: Go, Alive, Baba O’Riley, Indifference
