  • Big Shrimp to Debut at LonCon at Wonderland Forest

On September 20, Wonderland Forest in Lafayette, NY, will be home to LonCon, a two-day music festival featuring numerous rocking jam bands. This year, LonCon will also see the debut of newly formed Big Shrimp, ready to stun crowds with new faces.

    big shrimp

Formerly known as Baked Shrimp, the group has decided to take on a new name, and of course, a new style. Hailing from Long Island and originally forming in 2017, Baked Shrimp took on the world as a trio, made up of Jared Cowen (Guitar/Vocals), Scott Reill (Bass/Vocals), and Jager Soss (Drums/Vocals). Their funk style brought them to festivals and shows all over the United States and Canada, and even provided supporting acts for artists like the Disco Biscuits, Pink Talking Fish, Aqueous, Dopapod, and more.

In 2021, Baked Shrimp formed LonCon, a two-day music festival featuring hundreds of artists over the course of three years. Up until recently, they performed as Baked Shrimp, but are now ready to change it up and announce their new and improved act.

Now known as Big Shrimp, the band has taken on not just a new name, but a new sound and even a new member. Joining the Big Shrimp crew is Matt Takesh, their brand new keyboard player.

“I am so amped up to have Matt Takesh with us behind a batch of keyboards, including a real B3!” says guitarist and vocalist Jared Cowen. “He and Max Perrotti have been a pure joy to bring into our world of music, and we can’t wait to see what this lineup looks and sounds like on the stage.”

This year, LonCon has moved to a new location, Wonderland Forest in Lafayette. Surrounded by beautiful scenery and dozens of hiking trails, attendees can choose to camp as close or as far from the festival as they’d like, and take in amazing hiking trails, scenic overlooks, waterfalls, and more.

The full lineup of LonCon is to be released soon, with performances from Mihali, Big Shrimp x2, Aliens Among Us (ft. Ben Atkind (ElephantProof/formerly Goose), Ryan Dempsey (Twiddle), Sam Lucid (Dogs in a Pile), Jared Sage Cowen (Big Shrimp), Gantzer, Sophistafunk, Annie in the Water, and more already announced.

“Having his and our friends and family be with us for what we continue to want to be an annual event, is so special, and inspires us to continue to want to grow our community,” says Cowen. The highly anticipated debut album for Big Shrimp is set to release in the Spring of 2025, following an incredible festival.

  • Papadosio Brings Summer Sequence to Wonderland Forest

Papadosio brought their Summer Sequence Festival to Wonderland Forest on June 21 and 22 in Lafayette, New York. Summer Sequence has been around in different variations since 2017. This summer they decided to give the new venue in the Finger Lakes a try, moving the festival from their home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina.

Wonderland Forest, still in it’s nascent phase, was a great low-key location for a music festival, as it was intimate and hassle free. Everything was centrally located with two campgrounds on either side of the venue, and besides a trek up the hill for the late-night stage, you were never a far walk from anything. The main stage, nestled in the forest was intimate, and the trees offered a great spot for people to set up their hammocks and set up their own home bases away from their camp site. I did not venture into the other campground area, so I’m not sure if they had any other food options out that way, but the main stage did have a small menu for food. They cooked it made-to-order and they had a pretty damn good wood-fired pizza as an option. If you are camping there for a festival in the future it would probably be smart to not depend on those options for the whole weekend though. The Finger Lakes offers a ton of opportunities to take in some nature in the afternoon, both onsite and offsite, exiting and entering the venue was a breeze.

Papadosio are a mix of Prog Rock, Livetronica, Jazz and Jamband, and their eclectic style reflected on the wide-ranging line-up. Along with Psy-Dub producer Ott, both acts were scheduled to play longer sets each night. After some afternoon Yoga, the music started both days around noon. The afternoons started off laid back, with sparse crowds but as the days went on, the crowd thickened out and were really ready to go by 7 or so.

As it was a new venue, there were still a few kinks to the weekend. As reported, a neighbor in the area is not exactly excited about the venue, and the late-night stage on Friday was shut down early at 2 AM (it was supposed to go until 5). Because of the legal issues with the sound, the late-night for Saturday was entirely canceled. The late-night stage itself was a hike up the mountain, but the venue had shuttles to remedy this and escorted people back down into the late of the night. To no fault of anyone, Ott’s Saturday’s set was cut short after only 45 minutes, as a lighting storm appeared in the area. Everyone went back to take shelter at their camp sites, some left but most stayed in the hopes that Papadosio would still be able to properly close out their festival. During the break the storm turned into a torrential downpour, but as quickly as it started, it stopped. Right before their scheduled set at 10, you could hear some sounds from the stage, and the lights turned back on. Someone from venue drove around in an ATV and let people know that Papadosio would be coming on soon.

Papadosio was able to play their final set, you could tell that everyone was enjoying getting a win at the end. Wonderland Forest was a great spot for their Summer Sequence Festival, the weekend was a success with only a few hiccups. Hopefully the venue is able to work out some of the issues and they will be able to come back next summer. Papadosio still has several dates planned throughout the summer, including the Secret Dreams Music & Arts Festival in Ohio and AVL Fest in North Carolina. Wonderland Forest will be bringing back the Disco Biscuits over the 4th of July weekend for their second Biscoland music festival.

  • Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB at Wonderland Forest: Debuts, Phish Classics and More

Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB pulled their tour into Wonderland Forest in Lafayette on Friday, May 17 and delivered a rousing night of debut songs, Phish favorites and rarities.

Trey treated an appreciative audience to a mix of electric and acoustic music that delivered both high energy and subtle thrills. The setlist was a testament to the band’s versatility and musical prowess, spanning both familiar classics and experimental improvisations. From the infectious groove of “Gotta Jibboo” to the introspective “Water in the Sky,” each song pulled the crowd in and sent them on satisfied.

Wonderland Forest is a newer venue in the Syracuse area and a great place to see a show.  It’s ten miles south of the city near Lafayette, sitting on 400 acres of forests and fields.  When you initially enter the venue you walk down a gravel path through trees until entering a pristine clearing with a lovely pond.  Vendors are clustered around the water, with a small stage for an opening act to use in the back.  Walking further into a forest lit by brightly colored lights once the sun sets, you come to a beautiful amphitheater nestled in a grove.

As dusk descended upon this verdant expanse, eager concertgoers gathered under the canopies, their whispers mingling with the rustle of leaves, anticipating a night of transcendental music.  They weren’t disappointed. Trey took the stage a little after 8 pm, opening with a driving, pulsating “Sand,” followed by some nice soloing on “Back on the Train.”  He continued with “Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan” and then “Steam” before pulling out the acoustic guitar for “Heavy Things.”  The crowd was then treated to the debut of a never before played song called “It’s Happening Again,” followed by the first performance of “Windora Bug” in three years.

Set Two featured a few songs off of Phish’s upcoming album Evolve like “Oblivion” and “Pillow Jets” as well as Phish classics like “Ghost” and “Blaze On,” and Trey Anastasio originals.  After finishing, the band took the stage for a two-song encore, with Trey pulling out the acoustic guitar for “Water in the Sky” and then finishing with an electric “Prince Caspian.”

As the final notes of the encore faded, the crowd walked away happy – many no doubt on their way to catch the next stop in the tour. It was a high-energy night of music, only marred by a little rain, and a satisfying experience. Trey and Classic TAB’s playing was imbued with a sense of purpose and passion that resonated with every note. They are bringing their A-game on this tour and it is not to be missed.

Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB – Wonderland Forest, Lafayette, NY – Saturday, May 18, 2024

  • moe. Announces “Best.Summer.Ever” 2024 Tour with Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country

moe. has announced a 12-date “Best.Summer.Ever” Tour at stages across the country, and joined by Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, a tour that guarantees a blend of classic jams, improvisational brilliance, and a vibrant celebration of live music.

Tour stops include shows at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in NYC, a two-night run at Wonderland Forest in Lafayette and a show at Outer Harbor in Buffalo. All but Buffalo feature two sets of moe. and one set of Daniel Donato.

moe summer tour 2024 daniel donato best summer ever

The “Best.Summer.Ever” Tour will kick off with a bang on the Fourth of July at the Stone Pony Summerstage in Asbury Park, NJ. This show, as well as performances on July 5th in Westport, CT, and July 6th in Jay, VT, will also feature Neighbor.

Continuing their commitment to mental health awareness and support within the music community, moe. is proud to announce that $1 from each ticket sold will be donated to Backline and Sweet Relief’s Music’s Mental Health Fund. This vital program offers grants to subsidize mental health and wellness services for touring musicians, crew members, and their families, underscoring the band’s dedication to the well-being of their extended musical family.

Since the addition of Nate Wilson on keys and return of Chuck Garvey on guitar, the band has been reintroducing rarities and classic rock covers back into setlists. Recent shows have featured the first-time performance of Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California,” while in San Francisco, the return of the original “Paper Dragon,” Pink Floyd cover “Interstellar Overdrive,” “CalifornIA,” and “Take the Skinheads Bowling.”

moe. is currently gearing up for their “Ski Tour” in March, kicking off with a notable four-night run at Park City’s Egyptian Theatre, followed by stops at favorite Colorado haunts, particularly meaningful as it marks moe.’s first return to many of these venues since the early 2020 “ski tour” was abruptly halted due to the pandemic’s onset.

Daniel Donato’s own musical frequency was tuned at a young age while growing up in Nashville. After a high school history teacher gave him a pile of Grateful Dead bootleg recordings when he was 18, the stage was set for what would eventually become Donato’s vision, Cosmic Country. Since then, the guitar virtuoso, singer, songwriter and bandleader has released two acclaimed albums, the latest being 2023’s celebrated Reflector and has been tearing it up on the road playing over 200 shows per year. Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country has played to sold-out crowds from coast to coast and garnered a passionate and rapidly expanding fanbase.

  • One Of The Many Faces Behind Wonderland Forest: Shelby Martin

Wonderland Forest is more than just a forest: it has hiking trails, campgrounds, a wedding venue, and more recently, an outdoor music venue with various bands, food vendors, and other activities from across the United States.

Wonderland Forest exists because of a big team that focuses on the business side of managing grounds such as Wonderland Forest, as well as a focus on the environmentalism needed to run such a place ethically. One of these hard-workers is 2023 SUNY ESF graduate student, Shelby Martin.

    Wonderland’s Facebook

Shelby Martin describes the atmosphere of Wonderland to be peaceful. In fact, their motto is “A Forest Peaceful Adventures.” All these peaceful adventures – from camping, hiking, all the way to concerts and tattoo trucks – are what makes this venue unlike any other in Upstate New York.

Another aspect of Wonderland that makes it stand out is that most attendees treat the concerts more like a festival, and dress up in costume for their events. “For TumbleDown and Biscoland there were a lot more extravagant outfits. From my experience, people love to go all-out and feel like themselves, when they can’t be themselves in the real world,” Martin explains.

Martin also encourages everyone to listen to music outdoors – one aspect of Wonderland that many venues can’t offer. “I love listening to music in any venue whatsoever … but there’s just something different about listening to music outside, sitting on the grass, dancing with your friends.”

As a Science and Forestry major, Shelby Martin paid close attention to a lot of the sustainability that goes into running a venue. She is happy with the outcome of the forest and how it has transformed into what it is today– a repurposing of a place that was already set up for human use, with the intention to enjoy the outdoors. She’s a big advocate for integrating humans into nature– so much of our time is spent indoors staring at screens, so any excuse to get outside is a good one. Martin says that she and her team worked to make sure that trails were safe for humans while taking special precautions to preserve the natural wildlife that already lived in the forest.

While environmentalism being integrated into music is a somewhat new idea, Martin and her team are doing their best to keep sustainability in mind as they move forward with the venue. Wonderland already has stonewater mitigation, which is used to guide water where to go, in order to lessen negative effects of hard rains on the already compact soil. Even with this and other sustainability measures, she already has plans in the works to make her venue more sustainable, such as composting, and adding detailed descriptions of what can and cannot be recycled. She also hopes to incorporate an educational aspect of the forest with signs to identify types of flora and fauna that make Wonderland unique.

Shelby Martin is part of a team of six to seven people, which branches out to an even larger team that makes the wheels turn. But she makes it clear that Wonderland is so much more than her and her coworkers: “But really, Wonderland relies on our locals and our fans that come see the music…” She emphasizes that while Wonderland is a beautiful adventure – the people that visit are what really makes it shine, as well as all the work she and her coworkers put in to make Wonderland what it is.

During the fall semester, Shelby Martin was taking nine class credits and six research credits– one must wonder how a full-time student can balance both academics and a job such as this one. Over the summer of 2023, she worked 60-80-hour work weeks, since that’s the best time to get “knit-picky” problems taken care of. Though she no longer works that same schedule – she cut her work to about 20 hours per week – she admits that it’s certainly difficult to be a student and balance that work with her job. Luckily, her team is very understanding of what it means to be a student, and the key to her balance was simply communication. “I told the whole team that [I had midterms that week] and everyone took something off of my plate for things that needed to be done around Wonderland…to make my plate a little lighter.”

    Wonderland’s Facebook

When asked about vendors – they come from across the country with various food truck niches and other activities – Martin says that vendors actually contact Wonderland directly. In fact, there’s been so many that want to be involved, they’ve unfortunately had to refuse some due to the amount of applications. They particularly look for “a commitment to music as well as a commitment to their business.” They’ve had local vendors, but also vendors all the way from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and even Vermont.

Wonderland is so much more than a music venue. “We’re a campground, we’re an event center, we are a wedding venue. We are a multi-faceted space with 500 acres to work with and lots of trees and great space to do whatever, and be yourself.”
